Man shoots Oklahoma officer before being killed by police, authorities say

OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) — A man shot an Oklahoma City police officer on Tuesday and then barricaded himself inside a home on the city’s northwest side before being shot and killed by police, authorities said.

The wounded officer was doing well after surgery, said Capt. Valerie Littlejohn. He was shot as police were responding to a report of a man with a gun, she said.

Police surrounded the home, closed nearby streets and urged people to avoid the area while the man barricaded himself inside with several other people and continued to shoot at officers, Littlejohn said.

She said members of the department’s hostage negotiation team urged the man to surrender peacefully to authorities.

“During one of the incidents when he was shooting at officers, an officer was able to discharge his firearm, striking the suspect,” Littlejohn said. “The suspect was determined to be deceased here at the scene.”

Two women and three children inside the home with the suspect managed to get out safely, she said.
