Tom VanCamp Named Director of Competition

 

“Tom brings a wealth of racing and race officiating experience to the Trans Am Series, and we’re delighted to have him on our management team,” said Trans Am Race Company President John Clagett.  “I like the fact that Tom brings a racer’s perspective to the equation, which is vital to how we will go about building the Trans Am Series back.”

 

A native of East Lansing, Michigan, VanCamp will be responsible for all competition aspects of the Trans Am Series, as well as overseeing race and logistical operations.  He will serve as the liaison to SCCA Pro Racing, promoters and track personnel relating to series operations.

 

“I'm very excited to join the Trans Am family and to help build a great series,” said VanCamp. “I look forward to working with everyone involved to make this year, and the future, a huge success.” 

 

VanCamp comes to the Trans Am having served as Director of Competition for the SCCA Pro Racing-sanctioned Mazda MX-5 Cup Championship last season.  He also served in a field staff capacity for the Pirelli World Challenge Series, and one of his unique tasks was to assist the Chief Steward with video analysis of on-track incidents.

 

VanCamp was a driving instructor at the Ron Fellows School of High Performance Driving at the Spring Mountain Motorsports Ranch in Pahrump, Nevada until recently.  He was an accomplished driver, having won nine divisional championships, en route to six medals at the SCCA National Runoffs.  He won two National Championships in different classes (Showroom Stock C, 1986; Spec Racer, 1995) and won the prestigious Mark Donohue Award in 1995.

 

VanCamp replaces Randy Hembrey, who recently accepted the position of Director of Competition for the USAC sanctioned TORC Off-Road Series, effective Feb. 1. 

 

“Randy conveyed to me that it was truly a personal dilemma in weighing the new opportunity,” said Clagett. “We wish Randy nothing but the best in his new career pursuits and thank him for his hard work he put into nurturing the Trans Am Series these past few seasons.”
