As automation in the field of automated driving (AD) progresses, ensuring the safety and functionality of AD functions (ADFs) becomes crucial. Virtual scenario-based testing has emerged as a prevalent method for evaluating these systems, allowing for a wider range of testing environments and reproducibility of results. This approach involves AD-equipped test vehicles operating within predefined scenarios to achieve specific driving objectives. To comprehensively assess the impact of road network properties on the performance of an ADF, varying parameters such as intersection angle, curvature and lane width is essential. However, covering all potential scenarios is impractical, necessitating the identification of feasible parameter ranges and automated generation of corresponding road networks for simulation. Automating the workflow of road network generation, parameter variation, simulation, and evaluation leads to a comprehensive understanding of an ADF's behavior in diverse road network conditions. This paper aims to investigate the influence of road network parameters on the performance of a prototypical ADF through virtual scenario-based testing, ultimately advocating the importance of road topology in assuring safety and reliability of ADFs.

Long troughs observed in the $z > 5.5$ Ly$α$ and Ly$β$ forests are thought to be caused by the last remaining neutral patches during the end phases of reionization -- termed neutral islands. If this is true, then the longest troughs mark locations where we are most likely to observe the reionizing intergalactic medium (IGM). A key feature of the neutral islands is that they are bounded by ionization fronts (I-fronts) which emit Lyman series lines. In this paper, we explore the possibility of directly imaging the outline of neutral islands with a narrowband survey targeting Ly$α$. In a companion paper, we quantified the intensity of I-front Ly$α$ emissions during reionization and its dependence on the spectrum of incident ionizing radiation and I-front speed. Here we apply those results to reionization simulations to model the emissions from neutral islands. We find that neutral islands would appear as diffuse structures that are tens of comoving Mpc across, with surface brightnesses in the range $\approx 1 - 5\times 10^{-21}$ erg s$^{-1}$ cm$^{-2}$ arcsec$^{-2}$. The islands are brighter if the spectrum of ionizing radiation driving the I-fronts is harder, and/or if the I-fronts are moving faster. We develop mock observations for current and futuristic observatories and find that, while extremely challenging, detecting neutral islands is potentially within reach of an ambitious observing program with wide-field narrowband imaging. Our results demonstrate the potentially high impact of low-surface brightness observations for studying reionization.

During reionization, intergalactic ionization fronts (I-fronts) are sources of Ly$α$ line radiation produced by collisional excitation of hydrogen atoms within the fronts. In principle, detecting this emission could provide direct evidence for a reionizing intergalactic medium (IGM). In this paper, we use a suite of high-resolution one-dimensional radiative transfer simulations run on cosmological density fields to quantify the parameter space of I-front Ly$α$ emission. We find that the Ly$α$ production efficiency -- the ratio of emitted Ly$α$ flux to incident ionizing flux driving the front -- depends mainly on the I-front speed and the spectral index of the ionizing radiation. IGM density fluctuations on scales smaller than the typical I-front width produce scatter in the efficiency, but they do not significantly boost its mean value. The Ly$α$ flux emitted by an I-front is largest if 3 conditions are met simultaneously: (1) the incident ionizing flux is large; (2) the incident spectrum is hard, consisting of more energetic photons; (3) the I-front is traveling through a cosmological over-density, which causes it to propagate more slowly. We present a convenient parameterization of the efficiency in terms of I-front speed and incident spectral index. We make these results publicly available as an interpolation table and we provide a simple fitting function for a representative ionizing background spectrum. Our results can be applied as a sub-grid model for I-front Ly$α$ emissions in reionization simulations with spatial and/or temporal resolutions too coarse to resolve I-front structure. In a companion paper, we use our results to explore the possibility of directly imaging Ly$α$ emission around neutral islands during the last phases of reionization.

Recent quasar absorption line observations suggest that reionization may end as late as $z \approx 5.3$. As a means to search for large neutral hydrogen islands at $z<6$, we revisit long dark gaps in the Ly$β$ forest in VLT/X-Shooter and Keck/ESI quasar spectra. We stack the Ly$α$ forest corresponding to both edges of these Ly$β$ dark gaps and identify a damping wing-like extended absorption profile. The average redshift of the stacked forest is $z=5.8$. By comparing these observations with reionization simulations, we infer that such a damping wing-like feature can be naturally explained if these gaps are at least partially created by neutral islands. Conversely, simulated dark gaps lacking neutral hydrogen struggle to replicate the observed damping wing features. Furthermore, this damping wing-like profile implies that the volume-averaged neutral hydrogen fraction must be $\langle x_{\rm HI} \rangle \geq 6.1 \pm 3.9\%$ at $z = 5.8$. Our results offer robust evidence that reionization extends below $z=6$.

Multiple observations now suggest that the hydrogen reionization may have ended well below redshift six. While there has previously been no conclusive proof of extended neutral islands in the $z < 6$ intergalactic medium, it is possible that such islands give rise to the giant Ly$α$ absorption troughs seen in the spectra of high-redshift quasars. Here we present evidence that the deepest and longest-known Ly$α$ trough at $z < 6$, towards ULAS J0148+0600 (J0148), is associated with damping wing absorption. The evidence comes from a window of strong Ly$α$ transmission at the edge of the J0148 proximity zone. We show that the relatively smooth profile of this transmission window is highly unlikely to arise from resonant absorption alone, but is consistent with the presence of a damping wing. We further argue that the damping wing is unlikely to arise from a compact source due to the lack of associated metal lines, and is more likely to arise from an extended neutral island associated with the giant Ly$α$ trough. We investigate the physical conditions that may give rise to the strong transmission window, and speculate that it may signal an usually deep void, nearby ionizing sources, and/or the recent passage of an ionization front.

The attenuation of Ly$α$ photons by neutral hydrogen in the intergalactic medium (IGM) at $z\gtrsim5$ continues to be a powerful probe for studying the epoch of reionisation. Given a framework to estimate the intrinsic (true) Ly$α$ emission of high-$z$ sources, one can infer the ionisation state of the IGM during reionisation. In this work, we use the enlarged XQR-30 sample of 42 high-resolution and high-SNR QSO spectra between $5.8\lesssim\,z\lesssim\,6.6$ obtained with VLT/X-Shooter to place constraints on the IGM neutral fraction. This is achieved using our existing Bayesian QSO reconstruction framework which accounts for uncertainties such as the: (i) posterior distribution of predicted intrinsic Ly$α$ emission profiles (obtained via covariance matrix reconstruction of the Ly$α$ and N V emission lines from unattenuated high-ionisation emission line profiles; C IV, Si IV + O IV] and C III]) and (ii) distribution of ionised regions within the IGM using synthetic damping wing profiles drawn from a $1.6^3$ Gpc$^3$ reionisation simulation. Following careful quality control, we used 23 of the 42 available QSOs to obtain constraints/limits on the IGM neutral fraction during the tail-end of reionisation. Our median and 68th percentile constraints on the IGM neutral fraction are: $0.20\substack{+0.14\\-0.12}$ and $0.29\substack{+0.14\\-0.13}$ at $z = 6.15$~and 6.35. Further, we also report 68th percentile upper-limits of $\bar{x}_{\mathrm{H\,{\scriptscriptstyle I}}} < 0.21$, 0.20, 0.21 and 0.18 at $z = 5.8, 5.95, 6.05$~and 6.55. These results imply reionisation is still ongoing at $5.8\lesssim\,z\lesssim\,6.55$, consistent with previous results from XQR-30 (dark fraction and Ly$α$ forest) along with other observational probes considered in the literature.

This study explores the metal enrichment signatures attributed to the first generation of stars (PopIII) in the Universe, focusing on the E-XQR-30 sample. We aim to identify traces of Pop III metal enrichment by analyzing neutral gas in the interstellar medium of primordial galaxies and their satellite clumps, detected in absorption. To chase the chemical signature of PopIII stars, we studied metal absorption systems in the E-XQR-30 sample, selected through the detection of the OI absorption line at 1302A. The OI line is a reliable tracer of HI and allowed us to overcome the challenges posed by the Lyman-$α$ forest's increasing saturation at redshifts above $\sim5$ to identify Damped Lyman-$α$ systems (DLA). We detected and analyzed 29 OI systems at $z\geq5.4$, differentiating between proximate DLAs (PDLA) and intervening DLAs. Voigt function fits were applied to obtain ionic column densities, and relative chemical abundances were determined for 28 systems. These were then compared with the predictions of theoretical models. Our findings expand the study of OI systems at $z\geq5.4$ fourfold. No systematic differences were observed in the average chemical abundances between PDLAs and intervening DLAs. The chemical abundances in our sample align with literature systems at $z>4.5$, suggesting a similar enrichment pattern for this class of absorption systems. A comparison between these DLA-analogues at $4.5<z<6.5$ with a sample of very metal-poor DLAs at $2<z<4.5$ shows in general similar average values for the relative abundances, with the exception of [C/O], [Si/Fe] and [Si/O] which are significantly larger for the high-$z$ sample. Furthermore, the dispersion of the measurements significantly increases in the high-redshift bin. This increase is predicted by the theoretical models and indicates a potential retention of PopIII signatures in the probed gas. (Abridged)

Secret key generation (SKG) between authenticated devices is a pivotal task for secure communications. Diffie-Hellman (DH) is de-facto standard but not post-quantum secure. In this paper, we shall invent and analyze a new security primitive that is specifically designed for WPAN. For WPAN, wireless channel-based SKG has been proposed but was not widely deployed due to its critical dependence on the channel's entropy which is uncontrollable. We formulate a different approach: We still exploit channel properties but mainly hinge on the reciprocity of the wireless channel and not on the channel's entropy. The radio advantage comes from the use of full duplex communication. We show that in this situation both legitimate parties can agree on a common secret key even without ever probing the channel at all. At the core is a new bisparse blind deconvolution scheme for which we prove correctness and information-theoretic, i.e. perfect, security. We show that, ultimately, a secret key can be extracted and give a lower bound for the number of secret key bits which is then verified by experiments.

This work presents the comoving line densities ($dn/dX$) of low ionisation absorbers, namely, Mg II (2796Å), C II (1334Å) and O I (1302Å) across $2 <z < 6$ using the E-XQR-30 metal absorber catalog prepared from 42 XSHOOTER quasar spectra at $5.8 < z < 6.6$. Here, we analyse 280 Mg II ($1.9 < z < 6.4$), 22 C II ($5.2 < z < 6.4$) and 10 O I ($5.3 < z < 6.4$) intervening absorbers, thereby building up on previous studies with improved sensitivity of 50% completeness at an equivalent width of $W > 0.03$Å. For the first time, we present the comoving line densities of 131 weak ($W < 0.3$Å) intervening Mg II absorbers at $1.9 < z < 6.4$ which exhibit constant evolution with redshift similar to medium ($0.3 < W < 1.0$Å) absorbers. However, the cosmic mass density of Mg II - dominated by strong Mg II systems - traces the evolution of global star formation history from redshift 1.9 to 5.5. E-XQR-30 also increases the absorption path length by a factor of 50% for C II and O I whose line densities show a rising trend towards $z > 5$, in agreement with previous works. In the context of a decline in metal enrichment of the Universe at $z > 5$, the overall evolution in the incidence rates of absorption systems can be explained by a weak - possibly soft fluctuating - UV background. Our results, thereby, provide evidence for a late reionization continuing to occur in metal-enriched and therefore, biased regions in the Universe.

Unveiling the chemical fingerprints of the first (Pop III) stars is crucial for indirectly studying their properties and probing their massive nature. In particular, very massive Pop III stars explode as energetic Pair-Instability Supernovae (PISNe), allowing their chemical products to escape in the diffuse medium around galaxies, opening the possibility to observe their fingerprints in distant gas clouds. Recently, three z > 6.3 absorbers with abundances consistent with an enrichment from PISNe have been observed with JWST. In this Letter, we present novel chemical diagnostics to uncover environments mainly imprinted by PISNe. Furthermore, we revise the JWST low-resolution measurements by analyzing the publicly available high-resolution X-Shooter spectra for two of these systems. Our results reconcile the chemical abundances of these absorbers with those from literature, which are found to be consistent with an enrichment dominated (> 50% metals) by normal Pop II SNe. We show the power of our novel diagnostics in isolating environments uniquely enriched by PISNe from those mainly polluted by other Pop III and Pop II SNe. When the subsequent enrichment from Pop II SNe is included, however, we find that the abundances of PISN-dominated environments partially overlap with those predominantly enriched by other Pop III and Pop II SNe. We dub these areas confusion regions. Yet, the odd-even abundance ratios [Mg,Si/Al] are extremely effective in pinpointing PISN- dominated environments and allowed us to uncover, for the first time, an absorber consistent with a combined enrichment by a PISN and another Pop III SN for all the six measured elements.

The variations in Ly$α$ forest opacity observed at $z>5.3$ between lines of sight to different background quasars are too strong to be caused by fluctuations in the density field alone. The leading hypothesis for the cause of this excess variance is a late, ongoing reionization process at redshifts below six. Another model proposes strong ionizing background fluctuations coupled to a short, spatially varying mean free path of ionizing photons, without explicitly invoking incomplete reionization. With recent observations suggesting a short mean free path at $z\sim6$, and a dramatic improvement in $z>5$ Ly$α$ forest data quality, we revisit this latter possibility. Here we apply the likelihood-free inference technique of approximate Bayesian computation to jointly constrain the hydrogen photoionization rate $Γ_{\rm HI}$ and the mean free path of ionizing photons $λ_{\rm mfp}$ from the effective optical depth distributions at $z=5.0$-$6.1$ from XQR-30. We find that the observations are well-described by fluctuating mean free path models with average mean free paths that are consistent with the steep trend implied by independent measurements at $z\sim5$-$6$, with a concomitant rapid evolution of the photoionization rate.

Recent measurements of the ionizing photon mean free path (MFP) based on composite quasar spectra may point to reionization ending at $z<6$. These measurements are challenging because they rely on assumptions about the proximity zones of the quasars. For example, some quasars might have been close to neutral patches where reionization was still ongoing ("neutral islands"), and it is unclear how they would affect the measurements. We address this question with mock MFP measurements from radiative transfer simulations. We find that, even in the presence of neutral islands, our mock MFP measurements agree to within $30~\%$ with the true spatially averaged MFP in our simulations, which includes opacity from both the ionized medium and the islands. The inferred MFP is sensitive at the $<~50\%$ level to assumptions about quasar environments and lifetimes for realistic models. We demonstrate that future analyses with improved data may require explicitly modeling the effects of neutral islands on the composite spectra, and we outline a method for doing this. Lastly, we quantify the effects of neutral islands on Lyman-series transmission, which has been modeled with optically thin simulations in previous MFP analyses. Neutral islands can suppress transmission at $λ_{\rm rest}<912$ Angstroms significantly, up to a factor of 2 for $z_{\rm qso}=6$ in a plausible reionization scenario, owing to absorption by many closely spaced lines as quasar light redshifts into resonance. However, the suppression is almost entirely degenerate with the spectrum normalization and thus does not significantly bias the inferred MFP.

Understanding the orbits of spinning bodies in curved spacetime is important for modeling binary black hole systems with small mass ratios. At zeroth order in mass ratio, the smaller body moves on a geodesic. Post-geodesic effects are needed to model the system accurately. One very important post-geodesic effect is the gravitational self-force, which describes the small body's interaction with its own contribution to a binary's spacetime. Another post-geodesic effect, the spin-curvature force, is due to the smaller body's spin coupling to spacetime curvature. In this paper, we combine the leading orbit-averaged backreaction of point-particle gravitational-wave emission with the spin-curvature force to construct the worldline and gravitational waveform for a spinning body spiraling into a Kerr black hole. We use an osculating geodesic integrator, which treats the worldline as evolution through a sequence of geodesic orbits, as well as near-identity transformations, which eliminate dependence on orbital phases, allowing for fast computation of inspirals. The resulting inspirals and waveforms include all critical dynamical effects which govern such systems (orbit and precession frequencies, inspiral, strong-field gravitational-wave amplitudes), and as such form an effective first model for the inspiral of spinning bodies into Kerr black holes. We emphasize that our present calculation is not self consistent, since we neglect effects which enter at the same order as effects we include. However, our analysis demonstrates that the impact of spin-curvature forces can be incorporated into EMRI waveform tools with relative ease. The calculation is sufficiently modular that it should not be difficult to include neglected post-geodesic effects as efficient tools for computing them become available. (Abridged)

The launch of ${\it JWST}$ opens a new window for studying the connection between metal-line absorbers and galaxies at the end of the Epoch of Reionization (EoR). Previous studies have detected absorber-galaxy pairs in limited quantities through ground-based observations. To enhance our understanding of the relationship between absorbers and their host galaxies at $z>5$, we utilized the NIRCam Wide Field Slitless Spectroscopy (WFSS) to search for absorber-associated galaxies by detecting their rest-frame optical emission lines (e.g., [OIII] + H$β$). We report the discovery of a MgII-associated galaxy at $z=5.428$ using data from the ${\it JWST}$ ASPIRE program. The MgII absorber is detected on the spectrum of quasar J0305--3150 with a rest-frame equivalent width of 0.74$\mathring{A}$. The associated galaxy has an [OIII] luminosity of $10^{42.5}\ {\rm erg\ s^{-1}}$ with an impact parameter of 24.9 proper kiloparsecs (pkpc). The joint ${\it HST}$-${\it JWST}$ spectral energy distribution (SED) implies a stellar mass and star-formation rate of ${\rm M_* \approx 10^{8.8}}$ ${\rm M_{\odot}}$, ${\rm SFR}\approx 10\ {\rm M_{\odot}\ yr^{-1}}$. Its [OIII] equivalent width and stellar mass are typical of [OIII] emitters at this redshift. Furthermore, connecting the outflow starting time to the SED-derived stellar age, the outflow velocity of this galaxy is $\sim300\ {\rm km\ s^{-1}}$, consistent with theoretical expectations. We identified six additional [OIII] emitters with impact parameters of up to $\sim300$ pkpc at similar redshifts ($|dv|<1000\ {\rm km\ s^{-1}}$). The observed number is consistent with that in cosmological simulations. This pilot study suggests that systematically investigating the absorber-galaxy connection within the ASPIRE program will provide insights into the metal-enrichment history in the early universe.

Urban Air Mobility (UAM) is a new air transportation system for passengers and cargo in urban environments, enabled by new technologies and integrated into multimodal transportation systems. The vision of UAM comprises the mass use in urban and suburban environments, complementing existing transportation systems and contributing to the decarbonization of the transport sector. Initial attempts to create a market for urban air transportation in the last century failed due to lack of profitability and community acceptance. Technological advances in numerous fields over the past few decades have led to a renewed interest in urban air transportation. UAM is expected to benefit users and to also have a positive impact on the economy by creating new markets and employment opportunities for manufacturing and operation of UAM vehicles and the construction of related ground infrastructure. However, there are also concerns about noise, safety and security, privacy and environmental impacts. Therefore, the UAM system needs to be designed carefully to become safe, affordable, accessible, environmentally friendly, economically viable and thus sustainable. This paper provides an overview of selected key research topics related to UAM and how the German Aerospace Center (DLR) contributed to this research in the project "HorizonUAM - Urban Air Mobility Research at the German Aerospace Center (DLR)". Selected research results that support the realization of the UAM vision are briefly presented.

For the realization of the future urban air mobility, reliable information exchange based on robust and efficient communication between all airspace participants will be one of the key factors to ensure safe operations. Especially in dense urban scenarios, the direct and fast information exchange between drones based on Drone-to-Drone communications is a promising technology for enabling reliable collision avoidance systems. However, to mitigate collisions and to increase overall reliability, unmanned aircraft still lack a redundant, higher-level safety net to coordinate and monitor traffic, as is common in today's civil aviation. In addition, direct and fast information exchange based on ad hoc communication is needed to cope with the very short reaction times required to avoid collisions and to cope with the the high traffic densities. Therefore, we are developing a \ac{d2d} communication and surveillance system, called DroneCAST, which is specifically tailored to the requirements of a future urban airspace and will be part of a multi-link approach. In this work we discuss challenges and expected safety-critical applications that will have to rely on communications for \ac{uam} and present our communication concept and necessary steps towards DroneCAST. As a first step towards an implementation, we equipped two drones with hardware prototypes of the experimental communication system and performed several flights around the model city to evaluate the performance of the hardware and to demonstrate different applications that will rely on robust and efficient communications.

This study introduces novel constraints on the free-streaming of thermal relic warm dark matter (WDM) from Lyman-$α$ forest flux power spectra. Our analysis utilises a high-resolution, high-redshift sample of quasar spectra observed using the HIRES and UVES spectrographs ($z=4.2-5.0$). We employ a Bayesian inference framework and a simulation-based likelihood that encompasses various parameters including the free-streaming of dark matter, cosmological parameters, the thermal history of the intergalactic medium, and inhomogeneous reionization, to establish lower limits on the mass of a thermal relic WDM particle of $5.7\;\mathrm{keV}$ (at 95\% C.L.). This result surpasses previous limits from the Lyman-$α$ forest through reduction of the measured uncertainties due to a larger statistical sample and by measuring clustering to smaller scales ($k_{\rm max}=0.2\;\mathrm{km^{-1}\,s}$). The approximately two-fold improvement due to the expanded statistical sample suggests that the effectiveness of Lyman-$α$ forest constraints on WDM models at high redshifts are limited by the availability of high-quality quasar spectra. Restricting the analysis to comparable scales and thermal history priors as in prior studies ($k_{\rm max}<0.1\;\mathrm{km^{-1}\,s}$) lowers the bound on the WDM mass to $4.1\;\mathrm{keV}$. As the precision of the measurements increases, it becomes crucial to examine the instrumental and modelling systematics. On the modelling front, we argue that the impact of the thermal history uncertainty on the WDM particle mass constraint has diminished due to improved independent observations. At the smallest scales, the primary source of modeling systematic arises from the structure in the peculiar velocity of the intergalactic medium and inhomogeneous reionization.

One of the fundamental goals of particle physics is to gain microscopic understanding of the strong interaction. Electromagnetic form factors quantify the structure of hadrons in terms of charge and magnetization distributions. While the nucleon structure has been investigated extensively, data on hyperons is still scarce. It has recently been demonstrated that electron-positron annihilations into hyperon-antihyperon pairs provide a powerful tools to investigate their inner structure. We present a novel method useful for hyperon-antihyperon pairs of different types which exploits the cross section enhancement due to the vacuum polarization effect at the $J/ψ$ resonance. Using the 10 billion $J/ψ$ events collected with the BESIII detector, this allows a thorough determination of the hyperon structure . The result is essentially a precise snapshot of a $\barΛΣ^0$~($Λ\barΣ^0$) pair in the making, encoded in the form factor ratio and the phase. Their values are measured to be $R = 0.860\pm0.029({\rm stat.})\pm0.010({\rm syst.})$, $ΔΦ_1=(1.011\pm0.094({\rm stat.})\pm0.010({\rm syst.}))~\rm rad$ for $\barΛΣ^0$ and $ΔΦ_2=(2.128\pm0.094({\rm stat.})\pm0.010({\rm syst.}))~\rm rad$ for $Λ\barΣ^0$, respectively. Furthermore, charge-parity (CP) breaking is investigated for the first time in this reaction and found to be consistent with CP symmetry.

Recently, the Lyman-$α$ (Ly$α$) forest flux auto-correlation function has been shown to be sensitive to the mean free path of hydrogen-ionizing photons, $λ_{\text{mfp}}$, for simulations at $z \geq 5.4$. Measuring $λ_{\text{mfp}}$ at these redshifts will give vital information on the ending of reionization. Here we present the first observational measurements of the Ly$α$ forest flux auto-correlation functions in ten redshift bins from $5.1 \leq z \leq 6.0$. We use a sample of 35 quasar sightlines at $z > 5.7$ from the extended XQR-30 data set, this data has signal-to-noise ratios of $> 20$ per spectral pixel. We carefully account for systematic errors in continuum reconstruction, instrumentation, and contamination by damped Ly$α$ systems. With these measurements, we introduce software tools to generate auto-correlation function measurements from any simulation. For an initial comparison, we show our auto-correlation measurements with simulation models for recently measured $λ_{\text{mfp}}$ values and find good agreements. Further work in modeling and understanding the covariance matrices of the data is necessary to get robust measurements of $λ_{\text{mfp}}$ from this data.

Observed scatter in the Lyman-alpha opacity of quasar sightlines at $z<6$ has motivated measurements of the correlation between Ly$α$ opacity and galaxy density, as models that predict this scatter make strong and sometimes opposite predictions for how they should be related. Our previous work associated two highly opaque Ly$α$ troughs at $z\sim5.7$ with a deficit of Lyman-$α$ emitting galaxies (LAEs). In this work, we survey two of the most highly transmissive lines of sight at this redshift, towards the $z=6.02$ quasar SDSS J1306+0356 and the $z=6.17$ quasar PSO J359-06. We find that both fields are underdense in LAEs within 10 $h^{-1}$ Mpc of the quasar sightline, somewhat less extensive than underdensities associated with Ly$α$ troughs. We combine our observations with three additional fields from the literature, and find that while fields with extreme opacities are generally underdense, moderate opacities span a wider density range. The results at high opacities are consistent with models that invoke UV background fluctuations and/or late reionization to explain the observed scatter in IGM Ly$α$ opacities. There is tension at low opacities, however, as the models tend to associate lower IGM Ly$α$ opacities with higher densities. Although the number of fields surveyed is still small, the low-opacity results may support a scenario in which the ionizing background in low-density regions increases more rapidly than some models suggest after becoming ionized. Elevated gas temperatures from recent reionization may also be making these regions more transparent.

Our sample includes data from the XQR-30 VLT large program, as well as new Keck/ESI observations of QSOs near $z \sim 5.5$, for which we also acquire new [C II] 158$μ$m redshifts with ALMA. By measuring the Lyman continuum transmission profile in stacked QSO spectra, we find $λ_{\rm mfp} = 9.33_{-1.80}^{+2.06}$, $5.40_{-1.40}^{+1.47}$, $3.31_{-1.34}^{+2.74}$, and $0.81_{-0.48}^{+0.73}$ pMpc at $z=5.08$, 5.31, 5.65, and 5.93, respectively. Our results demonstrate that $λ_{\rm mfp}$ increases steadily and rapidly with time over $5<z<6$. Notably, we find that $λ_{\rm mfp}$ deviates significantly from predictions based on a fully ionized and relaxed IGM as late as $z=5.3$. By comparing our results to model predictions and indirect $λ_{\rm mfp}$ constraints based on IGM Ly$α$ opacity, we find that the $λ_{\rm mfp}$ evolution is consistent with scenarios wherein the IGM is still undergoing reionization and/or retains large fluctuations in the ionizing UV background well below redshift six.

Automated driving functions (ADFs) have become increasingly popular in recent years. However, their safety must be assured. Thus, the verification and validation of these functions is still an important open issue in research and development. To achieve this efficiently, scenario-based testing has been established as a valuable methodology among researchers, industry, as well as authorities. Simulations are a powerful way to test those scenarios reproducibly. In this paper, we propose a method to automatically test a set of scenarios in many variations. In contrast to related approaches, those variations are not applied to traffic participants around the ADF, but to the road network to show that parameters regarding the road topology also influence the performance of such an ADF. We present a continuous tool chain to set up scenarios, variate them, run simulations and finally, evaluate the performance with a set of key performance indicators (KPIs).

Artificial Intelligence (AI) has made impressive progress in recent years and represents a key technology that has a crucial impact on the economy and society. However, it is clear that AI and business models based on it can only reach their full potential if AI applications are developed according to high quality standards and are effectively protected against new AI risks. For instance, AI bears the risk of unfair treatment of individuals when processing personal data e.g., to support credit lending or staff recruitment decisions. The emergence of these new risks is closely linked to the fact that the behavior of AI applications, particularly those based on Machine Learning (ML), is essentially learned from large volumes of data and is not predetermined by fixed programmed rules.
Thus, the issue of the trustworthiness of AI applications is crucial and is the subject of numerous major publications by stakeholders in politics, business and society. In addition, there is mutual agreement that the requirements for trustworthy AI, which are often described in an abstract way, must now be made clear and tangible. One challenge to overcome here relates to the fact that the specific quality criteria for an AI application depend heavily on the application context and possible measures to fulfill them in turn depend heavily on the AI technology used. Lastly, practical assessment procedures are needed to evaluate whether specific AI applications have been developed according to adequate quality standards. This AI assessment catalog addresses exactly this point and is intended for two target groups: Firstly, it provides developers with a guideline for systematically making their AI applications trustworthy. Secondly, it guides assessors and auditors on how to examine AI applications for trustworthiness in a structured way.

Increasing anthropomorphic robot behavioral design could affect trust and cooperation positively. However, studies have shown contradicting results and suggest a task-dependent relationship between robots that display emotions and trust. Therefore, this study analyzes the effect of robots that display human-like emotions on trust, cooperation, and participants' emotions. In the between-group study, participants play the coin entrustment game with an emotional and a non-emotional robot. The results show that the robot that displays emotions induces more anxiety than the neutral robot. Accordingly, the participants trust the emotional robot less and are less likely to cooperate. Furthermore, the perceived intelligence of a robot increases trust, while a desire to outcompete the robot can reduce trust and cooperation. Thus, the design of robots expressing emotions should be task dependent to avoid adverse effects that reduce trust and cooperation.

In particular, we derive bolometric luminosities from the rest-frame 3000 A, luminosities using a bolometric correction from the literature, and the black hole masses by modelling the spectral regions around the CIV 1549A and the MgII 2798A emission lines, with scaling relations calibrated in the local universe. We find that the black hole masses derived from both emission lines are in the same range, and the scatter of the measurements agrees with expectations from the scaling relations. The MgII-derived masses are between ~(0.8-12) x 10^9 Msun, and the derived Eddington ratios are within ~0.13-1.73, with a mean (median) of 0.84 (0.72). By comparing the total sample of quasars at z>5.8, from this work and from the literature, to a bolometric luminosity distribution-matched sample at z~1.5, we find that quasars at high redshift host slightly less massive black holes which accrete slightly more rapidly than at lower-z, with a difference in the mean Eddington ratios of the two samples of ~0.27, in agreement with recent literature work.

Accurately identifying white matter tracts in medical images is essential for various applications, including surgery planning and tract-specific analysis. Supervised machine learning models have reached state-of-the-art solving this task automatically. However, these models are primarily trained on healthy subjects and struggle with strong anatomical aberrations, e.g. caused by brain tumors. This limitation makes them unsuitable for tasks such as preoperative planning, wherefore time-consuming and challenging manual delineation of the target tract is typically employed. We propose semi-automatic entropy-based active learning for quick and intuitive segmentation of white matter tracts from whole-brain tractography consisting of millions of streamlines. The method is evaluated on 21 openly available healthy subjects from the Human Connectome Project and an internal dataset of ten neurosurgical cases. With only a few annotations, the proposed approach enables segmenting tracts on tumor cases comparable to healthy subjects (dice=0.71), while the performance of automatic methods, like TractSeg dropped substantially (dice=0.34) in comparison to healthy subjects. The method is implemented as a prototype named atTRACTive in the freely available software MITK Diffusion. Manual experiments on tumor data showed higher efficiency due to lower segmentation times compared to traditional ROI-based segmentation.

We provide one of the most comprehensive metallicity studies at z $\sim$ 4 by analyzing the UV/optical HST photometry, and rest-frame VLT-FORS2 ultraviolet and VLT-XSHOOTER optical spectra of J0332-3557, a gravitationally lensed galaxy magnified by a factor of 20. With a 5$σ$ detection of the auroral O III]1666 line, we are able to derive a direct gas metallicity estimate for our target. We find Z_gas = 12 + log(O/H) = 8.26 $\pm$ 0.06, which is compatible with an increasing of both the gas fraction and the outflow metal loading factor from z $\sim$ 0 to z $\sim$ 4. J0332-3557 is the most metal-rich individual galaxy at z $\sim$ 4 for which the C/O ratio has been measured. We derive a low log(C/O) = - 1.02 $\pm$ 0.2, which suggests that J0332-3557 is in the early stages of ISM carbon enrichment driven mostly by massive stars. The low C/O abundance also indicates that J0332-3557 is characterized by a low star formation efficiency, higher yields of oxygen, and longer burst duration. We find that EW(C III])1906,9 is as low as $\sim$ 3 Å. The main drivers of the low EW(C III])1906,9 are the higher gas metallicity and the low C/O abundance. J0332-3557 is characterized by one diffuse and two more compact regions $\sim$ 1 kpc in size. We find that the carbon emission mostly originates in the compact knots. Our study on J0332-3557 serves as an anchor for studies investigating the evolution of metallicity and C/O abundance across different redshifts.

The study of spinning bodies moving in curved spacetime has relevance to binary black hole systems with large mass ratios, as well as being of formal interest. At zeroth order in a binary's mass ratio, the smaller body moves on a geodesic of the larger body's spacetime. Post-geodesic corrections describing forces driving the small body's worldline away from geodesics must be incorporated to model the system accurately. An important post-geodesic effect is the gravitational self-force, which describes the small body's interaction with its own spacetime curvature. This effect includes the backreaction due to gravitational-wave emission that leads to the inspiral of the small body into the black hole. When a spinning body orbits a black hole, its spin couples to spacetime curvature. This introduces another post-geodesic correction known as the spin-curvature force. An osculating geodesic integrator that includes both the backreaction due to gravitational waves and spin-curvature forces can be used to generate a spinning-body inspiral. In this paper, we use an osculating geodesic integrator to combine the leading backreaction of gravitational waves with the spin-curvature force. Our analysis only includes the leading orbit-averaged dissipative backreaction, and examines the spin-curvature force to leading order in the small body's spin. This is sufficient to build generic inspirals of spinning bodies, and serves as a foundation for further work examining how to include secondary spin in large-mass-ratio waveform models.

Supervised masking approaches in the time-frequency domain aim to employ deep neural networks to estimate a multiplicative mask to extract clean speech. This leads to a single estimate for each input without any guarantees or measures of reliability. In this paper, we study the benefits of modeling uncertainty in clean speech estimation. Prediction uncertainty is typically categorized into aleatoric uncertainty and epistemic uncertainty. The former refers to inherent randomness in data, while the latter describes uncertainty in the model parameters. In this work, we propose a framework to jointly model aleatoric and epistemic uncertainties in neural network-based speech enhancement. The proposed approach captures aleatoric uncertainty by estimating the statistical moments of the speech posterior distribution and explicitly incorporates the uncertainty estimate to further improve clean speech estimation. For epistemic uncertainty, we investigate two Bayesian deep learning approaches: Monte Carlo dropout and Deep ensembles to quantify the uncertainty of the neural network parameters. Our analyses show that the proposed framework promotes capturing practical and reliable uncertainty, while combining different sources of uncertainties yields more reliable predictive uncertainty estimates. Furthermore, we demonstrate the benefits of modeling uncertainty on speech enhancement performance by evaluating the framework on different datasets, exhibiting notable improvement over comparable models that fail to account for uncertainty.

We report on the design and the construction of a sounding rocket payload capable of performing atom interferometry with Bose-Einstein condensates of $^{41}$K and $^{87}$Rb. The apparatus is designed to be launched in two consecutive missions with a VSB-30 sounding rocket and is qualified to withstand the expected vibrational loads of 1.8 g root-mean-square in a frequency range between 20 - 2000 Hz and the expected static loads during ascent and re-entry of 25 g. We present a modular design of the scientific payload comprising a physics package, a laser system, an electronics system and a battery module. A dedicated on-board software provides a largely automated process of predefined experiments. To operate the payload safely in laboratory and flight mode, a thermal control system and ground support equipment has been implemented and will be presented. The payload presented here represents a cornerstone for future applications of matter wave interferometry with ultracold atoms on satellites.

The final phase of the reionization process can be probed by rest-frame UV absorption spectra of quasars at z>6, shedding light on the properties of the diffuse intergalactic medium within the first Gyr of the Universe. The ESO Large Programme "XQR-30: the ultimate XSHOOTER legacy survey of quasars at z~5.8-6.6" dedicated ~250 hours of observations at the VLT to create a homogeneous and high-quality sample of spectra of 30 luminous quasars at z~6, covering the rest wavelength range from the Lyman limit to beyond the MgII emission. Twelve quasar spectra of similar quality from the XSHOOTER archive were added to form the enlarged XQR-30 sample, corresponding to a total of ~350 hours of on-source exposure time. The median effective resolving power of the 42 spectra is R~11400 and 9800 in the VIS and NIR arm, respectively. The signal-to-noise ratio per 10 km/s pixel ranges from ~11 to 114 at $λ\simeq 1285$ Årest frame, with a median value of ~29. We describe the observations, data reduction and analysis of the spectra, together with some first results based on the E-XQR-30 sample. New photometry in the H and K bands are provided for the XQR-30 quasars, together with composite spectra whose characteristics reflect the large absolute magnitudes of the sample. The composite and the reduced spectra are released to the community through a public repository, and will enable a range of studies addressing outstanding questions regarding the first Gyr of the Universe.

The first stars were born from chemically pristine gas. They were likely massive, and thus they rapidly exploded as supernovae, enriching the surrounding gas with the first heavy elements. In the Local Group, the chemical signatures of the first stellar population were identified among low-mass, long-lived, very metal-poor ([Fe/H]<-2) stars, characterized by high abundances of carbon over iron ([C/Fe]>+0.7): the so-called carbon-enhanced metal-poor stars. Conversely, a similar carbon excess caused by first-star pollution was not found in dense neutral gas traced by absorption systems at different cosmic time. Here we present the detection of 14 very metal-poor, optically thick absorbers at redshift z~3-4. Among these, 3 are carbon-enhanced and reveal an overabundance with respect to Fe of all the analyzed chemical elements (O, Mg, Al, and Si). Their relative abundances show a distribution with respect to [Fe/H] that is in very good agreement with those observed in nearby very metal-poor stars. All the tests we performed support the idea that these C-rich absorbers preserve the chemical yields of the first stars. Our new findings suggest that the first-star signatures can survive in optically thick but relatively diffuse absorbers, which are not sufficiently dense to sustain star formation and hence are not dominated by the chemical products of normal stars.

Proximity zones of high-redshift quasars are unique probes of their central supermassive black holes as well as the intergalactic medium in the last stages of reionization. We present 22 new measurements of proximity zones of quasars with redshifts between 5.8 and 6.6, using the enlarged XQR-30 sample of high-resolution, high-SNR quasar spectra. The quasars in our sample have UV magnitudes of $M_{1450}\sim -27$ and black hole masses of $10^9$$\unicode{x2013}$$10^{10}$ M$_\odot$. Our inferred proximity zone sizes are 2$\unicode{x2013}$7 physical Mpc, with a typical uncertainty of less than 0.5 physical Mpc, which, for the first time, also includes uncertainty in the quasar continuum. We find that the correlation between proximity zone sizes and the quasar redshift, luminosity, or black hole mass, indicates a large diversity of quasar lifetimes. Two of our proximity zone sizes are exceptionally small. The spectrum of one of these quasars, with $z=6.02$, displays, unusually for this redshift, damping wing absorption without any detectable metal lines, which could potentially originate from the IGM. The other quasar has a high-ionization absorber $\sim$0.5 pMpc from the edge of the proximity zone. This work increases the number of proximity zone measurements available in the last stages of cosmic reionization to 87. This data will lead to better constraints on quasar lifetimes and obscuration fractions at high redshift, which in turn will help probe the seed mass and formation redshift of supermassive black holes.

We measure the mean free path ($λ_{\rm mfp,HI}$), photo-ionization rate ($\langle Γ_{\rm HI} \rangle$) and neutral fraction ($\langle f_{\rm HI} \rangle$) of hydrogen in 12 redshift bins at $4.85<z<6.05$ from a large sample of moderate resolution XShooter and ESI QSO absorption spectra. The fluctuations in ionizing radiation field are modeled by post-processing simulations from the Sherwood suite using our new code "EXtended reionization based on the Code for Ionization and Temperature Evolution" (EX-CITE). EX-CITE uses efficient Octree summation for computing intergalactic medium attenuation and can generate large number of high resolution $Γ_{\rm HI}$ fluctuation models. Our simulation with EX-CITE shows remarkable agreement with simulations performed with the radiative transfer code Aton and can recover the simulated parameters within $1σ$ uncertainty. We measure the three parameters by forward-modeling the Ly$α$ forest and comparing the effective optical depth ($τ_{\rm eff, HI}$) distribution in simulations and observations. The final uncertainties in our measured parameters account for the uncertainties due to thermal parameters, modeling parameters, observational systematics and cosmic variance. Our best fit parameters show significant evolution with redshift such that $λ_{\rm mfp,HI}$ and $\langle f_{\rm HI} \rangle$ decreases and increases by a factor $\sim 6$ and $\sim 10^{4}$, respectively from $z \sim 5$ to $z \sim 6$. By comparing our $λ_{\rm mfp,HI}$, $\langle Γ_{\rm HI} \rangle$ and $\langle f_{\rm HI} \rangle$ evolution with that in state-of-the-art Aton radiative transfer simulations and the Thesan and CoDa-III simulations, we find that our best fit parameter evolution is consistent with a model in which reionization completes by $z \sim 5.2$.

Intervening CIV absorbers are key tracers of metal-enriched gas in galaxy halos over cosmic time. Previous studies suggest that the CIV cosmic mass density ($Ω_{\rm CIV}$) decreases slowly over 1.5 $\lesssim z\lesssim$ 5 before declining rapidly at $z\gtrsim$ 5, but the cause of this downturn is poorly understood. We characterize the $Ω_{\rm CIV}$ evolution over 4.3 $\lesssim z\lesssim$ 6.3 using 260 absorbers found in 42 XSHOOTER spectra of $z\sim$ 6 quasars, of which 30 come from the ESO Large Program XQR-30. The large sample enables us to robustly constrain the rate and timing of the downturn. We find that $Ω_{\rm CIV}$ decreases by a factor of 4.8 $\pm$ 2.0 over the ~300 Myr interval between $z\sim$ 4.7 and $z\sim$ 5.8. The slope of the column density (log N) distribution function does not change, suggesting that CIV absorption is suppressed approximately uniformly across 13.2 $\leq$ log N/cm$^{-2}$ < 15.0. Assuming that the carbon content of galaxy halos evolves as the integral of the cosmic star formation rate density (with some delay due to stellar lifetimes and outflow travel times), we show that chemical evolution alone could plausibly explain the fast decline in $Ω_{\rm CIV}$ over 4.3 $\lesssim z\lesssim$ 6.3. However, the CIV/CII ratio decreases at the highest redshifts, so the accelerated decline in $Ω_{\rm CIV}$ at $z\gtrsim$ 5 may be more naturally explained by rapid changes in the gas ionization state driven by evolution of the UV background towards the end of hydrogen reionization.

Core collapse supernovae are thought to be one of the main sources in the galaxy of elements heavier than iron. Understanding the origin of the elements is thus tightly linked to our understanding of the explosion mechanism of supernovae and supernova nucleosynthesis. X-ray and gamma-ray observations of young supernova remnants, combined with improved theoretical modeling, have resulted in enormous improvements in our knowledge of these events. The isotope ${}^{44}$Ti is one of the most sensitive probes of the innermost regions of the core collapse engine, and its spatial and velocity distribution are key observables. Hard X-ray imaging spectroscopy with the Nuclear Spectroscopic Telescope Array (NuSTAR) has provided new insights into the structure of the supernova remnant Cassiopeia A (Cas A), establishing the convective nature of the supernova engine. However, many questions about the details of this engine remain. We present here the concept for a balloon-borne follow-up mission called ASCENT (A SuperConducting ENergetic x-ray Telescope). ASCENT uses transition edge sensor gamma-ray microcalorimeter detectors with a demonstrated 55 eV Full Width Half Maximum (FWHM) energy resolution at 97 keV. This 8--16-fold improvement in energy resolution over NuSTAR will allow high resolution imaging and spectroscopy of the ${}^{44}$Ti emission. This will allow a detailed reconstruction of gamma-ray line redshifts, widths, and shapes, allowing us to address questions such as: What is the source of the neutron star "kicks"? What is the dominant production pathway for ${}^{44}$Ti? Is the engine of Cas A unique?

In this measurement the charged pions from $K_S^0$ meson decays are excluded. We report on the 1,000-element transition-edge sensor (TES) x-ray spectrometer implementation of the TOMographic Circuit Analysis Tool (TOMCAT). TOMCAT combines a high spatial resolution scanning electron microscope (SEM) with a highly efficient and pixelated TES spectrometer to reconstruct three-dimensional maps of nanoscale integrated circuits (ICs). A 240-pixel prototype spectrometer was recently used to reconstruct ICs at the 130 nm technology node, but to increase imaging speed to more practical levels, the detector efficiency needs to be improved. For this reason, we are building a spectrometer that will eventually contain 3,000 TES microcalorimeters read out with microwave superconducting quantum interference device (SQUID) multiplexing, and we currently have commissioned a 1,000 TES subarray. This still represents a significant improvement from the 240-pixel system and allows us to begin characterizing the full spectrometer performance. Of the 992 maximimum available readout channels, we have yielded 818 devices, representing the largest number of TES x-ray microcalorimeters simultaneously read out to date. These microcalorimeters have been optimized for pulse speed rather than purely energy resolution, and we measure a FWHM energy resolution of 14 eV at the 8.0 keV Cu K$α$ line.

The $e^+e^-\toωX(3872)$ Born cross section and the corresponding upper limit at 90\% confidence level at each energy point are reported.
