In recent years, twisted bilayer systems such as bilayer graphene have attracted a great deal of attention as the twist angle introduces a degree of freedom which can be used to non-trivially modify system properties. This idea has been picked up in the cold atom community, first with a theoretical proposal to simulate twisted bilayers in state-dependent optical lattices, and, more recently, with an experimental realization of twisted bilayers with bosonic atoms in two different spin states. In this manuscript, we theoretically investigate dipolar bosons in a twisted bilayer geometry. The interplay between dipolar interaction and the twist between the layers results in the emergence of quantum states not observed in the absence of twist. We study how system properties vary as we change the twist angle at fixed distance between the layers and fixed dipolar interaction. We find that at a twist angle $θ=0.1^{\circ}$, the observed quantum phases are consistent with those seen in the absence of twist angle, i.e. paired superfluid, paired supersolid, and paired solid phases. However, a slight increase in the twist angle to $θ=0.2^{\circ}$ disrupts these paired phases in favor of a phase separation between checkerboard solid and superfluid regions. Notably, at a twist angle of $θ=5.21^{\circ}$, the local occupation number follows the moiré pattern of the underlying moiré bilayers so that a periodic structure of insulating islands is formed. These insulating islands are surrounded by a superfluid.

Investigating finite temperature effects on quantum phases is key to their experimental realization. Finite temperature, and the interplay between quantum and thermal fluctuations can undermine properties and/or key features of quantum systems but they can also bring upon interesting phenomena. In this paper, we present a comprehensive investigation of the finite temperature phase diagram of two-dimensional lattice dipolar bosons coupled to a high-finesse optical cavity. Interestingly, we observe that checkerboard density-density correlations are enhanced at finite temperature. Indeed, we found that finite temperature drives a superfluid ground state into a normal state which will then develop checkerboard order at higher temperatures. We show that this effect is solely due to the cavity-mediated interactions. We also confirm that the supersolid checkerboard phase survives for a wide range of filling factors up to temperature scale of the order of half hopping amplitude, while the checkerboard diagonal order can survive up to temperatures of a few hopping amplitudes.

Here, we study quantum phases of dipolar bosons trapped in optical lattices and coupled to a high-finesse cavity where both dipolar interaction and cavity-mediated interaction coexist. We perform quantum Monte Carlo simulations, and find that the checkerboard solid is enhanced and the checkerboard supersolid phase can exist in a wide range of densities (e.g. $ 0.27\lesssim n\lesssim0.73 $). Our unbiased numerical results suggest that both solid and supersolid phases can be achieved experimentally with magnetic atoms coupled to a cavity.

By means of quantum Monte Carlo simulations we study phase diagrams of dipolar bosons in a square optical lattice. The dipoles in the system are parallel to each other and their orientation can be fixed in any direction of the three-dimensional space. Starting from experimentally tunable parameters like scattering length and dipolar interaction strength, we derive the parameters entering the effective Hamiltonian. Depending on the direction of the dipoles, various types of supersolids (e.g. checkerboard, stripe) and solids (checkerboard, stripe, diagonal stripe, and an incompressible phase) can be stabilized. Remarkably, we find a cluster supersolid characterized by the formation of horizontal clusters of particles. These clusters order along a direction at an angle with the horizontal. Moreover, we find what we call a grain-boundary superfluid. In this phase, regions with solid order are separated by extended defects -- grain boundaries -- which support superfluidity. We also investigate the robustness of the stripe supersolid against thermal fluctuations. Finally, we comment on the experimental realization of the phases found.

We present ground state phase diagrams of the above system at different tilt angles. We find that, as the dipolar interaction increases, the superfluid phase at half filling factor is destroyed in favor of either a checkerboard or stripe solid phase for tilt angle $θ\lesssim 35.3^{\circ}$ or $θ\gtrsim 35.3^{\circ}$ respectively. More interesting physics happens at tilt angles $θ\gtrsim 58^{\circ}$, where we find that, as the dipolar interaction strength increases, solid phases first appear at filling factor lower than $0.5$. Moreover, unlike what observed at lower tilt angles, we find that, at half filling, a stripe supersolid intervenes between the superfluid and stripe solid phase.

Indeed, features in the permutation cycles statistics can be used to uniquely identify certain insulating phases, and are consistent with local resonances of occupation numbers in the ground-state expansion of the phase. We also confirm that suitable quantities derived from the probability distribution of the length of permutation cycles can be used to detect superfluid to insulator phase transitions.

We map the spin model to a hard-core Bose-Hubbard model and perform large-scale Monte Carlo simulations by the Worm algorithm. In absence of disorder, we find that, for large enough interaction, three phases are stabilized: a superfluid phase, a checkerboard solid phase, only present at density n = 0.5, and a checkerboard supersolid phase which can be reached by doping the CB phase away from half-filling. In the presence of off-diagonal disorder and at fixed density n=0.5, we find that, unlike what observed in the case of short-range hopping, localization never occurs even for site dilution larger than the percolation threshold, and off-diagonal order, though strongly suppressed, persists for arbitrarily large values of site-dilution.

Ultracold gases offer an unprecedented opportunity to engineer disorder and interactions in a controlled manner. In an effort to understand the interplay between disorder, dipolar interaction and quantum degeneracy, we study two-dimensional hard-core dipolar lattice bosons in the presence of on-site bound disorder. Our results are based on large-scale path-integral quantum Monte Carlo simulations by the Worm algorithm. We study the ground state phase diagram at fixed half-integer filling factor for which the clean system is either a superfluid at lower dipolar interaction strength or a checkerboard solid at larger dipolar interaction strength. We find that, even for weak dipolar interaction, superfluidity is destroyed in favor of a Bose glass at relatively low disorder strength. Interestingly, in the presence of disorder, superfluidity persists for values of dipolar interaction strength for which the clean system is a checkerboard solid. At fixed disorder strength, as the dipolar interaction is increased, superfluidity is destroyed in favor of a Bose glass. As the interaction is further increased, the system eventually develops extended checkerboard patterns in the density distribution. Due to the presence of disorder, though, grain boundaries and defects, responsible for a finite residual compressibility, are present in the density distribution. Finally, we study the robustness of the superfluid phase against thermal fluctuations.

In this paper, we consider dipolar bosons trapped in a stack of one-dimensional optical lattice layers, previously studied in [1]. Building on our prior results, we provide a description of the quantum phases stabilized in this system which include composite superfluids, solids, and supercounterfluids, most of which are found to be threshold- less with respect to the dipolar interaction strength. We also demonstrate the effect of enhanced sensitivity to rotations of a SQUID-type device made of two composite superfluids trapped in a ring-shaped optical lattice layer with weak links.

In the present work we discuss inter-species entanglement in Bose-Bose mixtures trapped in optical lattices. This work is motivated by the observation that, in the presence of a second component, the Mott-insulator lobe shifts {\em{differently}} on the hole- and particle-side with respect to the Mott lobe of the single species system (Phys. Rev. A 82, 021601, Laser Phys. 21, 1443). We use perturbation theory, formulated in a Hilbert space decomposed by means of lattice symmetries, in order to show that the nonuniform shift of the Mott lobe is a consequence of an inter-species entanglement which differs in the lowest excited states to remove and add a particle. Our results indicate that inter-species entanglement in mixtures can provide a new perspective in understanding quantum phase transitions. To validate our approach, we compare our results from perturbation theory with quantum Monte Carlo simulations.

The recent advances in creating nearly degenerate quantum dipolar gases in optical lattices are opening the doors for the exploration of equilibrium physics of quantum systems with anisotropic and long-range dipolar interactions. In this paper we study the zero- and finite-temperature phase diagrams of a system of hard-core dipolar bosons at half-filling, trapped in a two-dimensional optical lattice. The dipoles are aligned parallel to one another and tilted out of the optical lattice plane by means of an external electric field. At zero-temperature, the system is a superfluid at all tilt angles $θ$ provided that the strength of dipolar interaction is below a critical value $V_c(θ)$. Upon increasing the interaction strength while keeping $θ$ fixed, the superfluid phase is destabilized in favor of a checkerboard or a stripe solid depending on the tilt angle. We explore the nature of the phase transition between the two solid phases and find evidence of a micro-emulsion phase, following the Spivak-Kivelson scenario, separating these two solid phases. Additionally, we study the stability of these quantum phases against thermal fluctuations and find that the stripe solid is the most robust, making it the best candidate for experimental observation.

The mixture is trapped in a square lattice at half-filling conditions. Various quantum phases are stabilized depending on the interplay between intra- and inter-species interactions. We show that the phase diagram features a demixed superfluid phase and demixed Mott-Insulator phase when the inter-species interaction becomes greater than the intra-species repulsion, and a double-superfluid phase or a supercounterflow otherwise. We report on results of Quantum Monte Carlo simulations for bosons in a two dimensional quasi-periodic optical lattice. We study the ground state phase diagram at unity filling and confirm the existence of three phases: superfluid, Mott insulator, and Bose glass. At lower interaction strength, we find that sizable disorder strength is needed in order to destroy superfluidity in favor of the Bose glass. On the other hand, at large enough interaction superfluidity is completely destroyed in favor of the Mott insulator (at lower disorder strength) or the Bose glass (at larger disorder strength). At intermediate interactions, the system undergoes an insulator to superfluid transition upon increasing the disorder, while a further increase of disorder strength drives the superfluid to Bose glass phase transition. While we are not able to discern between the Mott insulator and the Bose glass at intermediate interactions, we study the transition between these two phases at larger interaction strength and, unlike what reported in arXiv:1110.3213v3 for random disorder, find no evidence of a Mott-glass-like behavior.

We study the degeneracy of the ground-state energy $E$ of the two-component Bose-Hubbard model and of the perturbative correction $E_1$. We show that the degeneracy properties of $E$ and $E_1$ are closely related to the connectivity properties of the lattice. We determine general conditions under which $E$ is nondegenerate. This analysis is then extended to investigate the degeneracy of $E_1$. In this case, in addition to the lattice structure, the degeneracy also depends on the number of particles present in the system. After identifying the cases in which $E_1$ is degenerate and observing that the standard (degenerate) perturbation theory is not applicable, we develop a method to determine the zeroth-order correction to the ground state by exploiting the symmetry properties of the lattice. This method is used to implement the perturbative approach to the two-component Bose-Hubbard model in the case of degenerate $E_1$ and is expected to be a valid tool to perturbatively study the asymmetric character of the Mott-insulator to superfluid transition between the particle and hole side.

The three-body term is tuned by coupling the triply occupied states to a trapped universal trimer. We find that, for sufficiently attractive three-body interaction the n = 2 Mott lobe disappears and the system displays first order phase transitions separating the n = 1 from the n = 3 lobes, and the n = 1 and n = 3 Mott insulator from the superfluid. We have also analyzed the effect of finite temperature and found that transitions are still of first order at temperatures T\simJ where J is the hopping matrix element.

Starting from hopping parameters and interaction strengths which stabilize the Ising antiferromagnetic phase in the homogeneous case and at half integer filling factor, we study how the presence of the harmonic confinement challenge the realization of such phase. We consider realistic trapping frequencies and number of particles, and establish under which conditions, i.e. total number of particles and population imbalance, the antiferromagnetic phase can be observed in the trap.

This tutorial is a theoretical work, in which we study the physics of ultra-cold dipolar bosonic gases in optical lattices. Such gases consist of bosonic atoms or molecules that interact via dipolar forces, and that are cooled below the quantum degeneracy temperature, typically in the nK range. When such a degenerate quantum gas is loaded into an optical lattice produced by standing waves of laser light, new kinds of physical phenomena occur. These systems realize then extended Hubbard-type models, and can be brought to a strongly correlated regime. The physical properties of such gases, dominated by the long-range, anisotropic dipole-dipole interactions, are discussed using the mean-field approximations, and exact Quantum Monte Carlo techniques (the Worm algorithm).

Quantum Monte Carlo simulations of a single chain (formed by a single molecule on each layer) reveal its quantum roughening transition. The case of finite in-layer density of molecules is studied within the framework of the J-current model approximation, and it is found that N-independent molecular superfluid phase can undergo a quantum phase transition to a rough chain superfluid. A theorem is proven that no superfluidity of chains with length shorter than N is possible. The scheme for detecting chain formation is proposed.

The mixture is confined on a two-dimensional square lattice and, at low enough temperatures, can be described by the two-component Bose-Hubbard model. The latter displays a extremely rich phase diagram including solid, superfluid, supersolid phases. Here we mainly focus on the checkerboard molecular solid, stabilized by the long range dipolar interaction, and study how the presence of atoms affects its robustness both at zero and finite temperature. We find that, due to atom-molecule interaction, solid phases can be stabilized at both, (much) lower strengths of dipolar interaction and higher temperatures, than when no atoms are present. As a byproduct, atoms also order in a solid phase with same melting temperatures as for molecules. Finally, we find that for large enough interaction between atoms and molecules a paired supersolid phase can be stabilized.

We perform a numeric study (Worm algorithm Monte Carlo simulations) of ultracold two-component bosons in two-dimensional optical lattices. We study how the Mott insulator to superfluid transition is affected by the presence of a second superfluid bosonic species. We find that, at fixed interspecies interaction, the upper and lower boundaries of the Mott lobe are differently modified. The lower boundary is strongly renormalized even for relatively low filling factor of the second component and moderate (interspecies) interaction. The upper boundary, instead, is affected only for large enough filling of the second component. Whereas boundaries are renormalized we find evidence of polaron-like excitations. Our results are of interest for current experimental setups.

We perform a numeric study (worm algorithm Monte Carlo simulations) of ultracold two-component bosons in two- and three-dimensional optical lattices. At strong enough interactions and low enough temperatures the system features magnetic ordering. We compute critical temperatures and entropies for the disappearance of the Ising antiferromagnetic and the xy-ferromagnetic order and find that the largest possible entropies per particle are ~0.5kB. We also estimate (optimistically) the experimental hold times required to reach equilibrium magnetic states to be on a scale of seconds. Low critical entropies and long hold times render the experimental observations of magnetic phases challenging and call for increased control over heating sources.

Aiming for simplicity of explicit equations and at the same time controllable accuracy of the theory we present results for all thermodynamic quantities and correlation functions for the weakly interacting Bose gas at short-to-intermediate distances obtained within an improved version of Beliaev's diagrammatic technique. With a small symmetry breaking term Beliaev's diagrammatic technique becomes regular in the infrared limit. Up to higher-order terms (for which we present order-of-magnitude estimates), the partition function and entropy of the system formally correspond to those of a non-interacting bosonic (pseudo-)Hamiltonian with a temperature dependent Bogoliubov-type dispersion relation. Away from the fluctuation region, this approach provides the most accurate--in fact, the best possible within the Bogoliubov-type pseudo-Hamiltonian framework--description of the system with controlled accuracy. It produces accurate answers for the off-diagonal correlation functions up to distances where the behaviour of correlators is controlled by generic hydrodynamic relations, and thus can be accurately extrapolated to arbitrarily large scales. In the fluctuation region, the non-perturbative contributions are given by universal (for all weakly interacting U(1) systems) constants and scaling functions, which can be obtained separately--by simulating classical U(1) models--and then used to extend the description of the weakly interacting Bose gas to the fluctuation region. The theory works in all spatial dimensions and we explicitly check its validity against first-principle Monte Carlo simulations for various thermodynamic properties and the single-particle density matrix.

We discuss the quantum phases of hard-core bosons on a two-dimensional square lattice interacting via repulsive dipole-dipole interactions, as realizable with polar molecules trapped in optical lattices. In the limit of small tunneling, we find evidence for a devil's staircase, where solid phases appear at all rational fillings of the underlying lattice. For finite tunneling, we establish the existence of extended regions of parameters where the groundstate is a supersolid, obtained by doping the solids either with particles or vacancies. Here the solid-superfluid quantum melting transition consists of two consecutive second-order transitions, with a supersolid as the intermediate phase. The effects of finite temperature and confining potentials relevant to experiments are discussed.

We reveal a generic mechanism of generating sign-alternating inter-site interactions mediated by strongly correlated lattice bosons. The ground state phase diagram of the two-component hard-core Bose-Hubbard model on a square lattice at half-integer filling factor for each component, obtained by worm algorithm Monte Carlo simulations, is strongly modified by these interactions and features the solid+superfluid phase for strong anisotropy between the hopping amplitudes. The new phase is a direct consequence of the effective nearest-neighbor repulsion between "heavy" atoms mediated by the "light" superfluid component. Due to their sign-alternating character, mediated interactions lead to a rich variety of yet to be discovered quantum phases. quantum phases.

Such three-body interactions can be derived from a microscopic theory for polar molecules trapped in an optical lattice. We provide benchmark calculations, based on exact quantum Monte Carlo simulations, for the emulator to be tested against. We report results for the ground state phase diagram of the two-dimensional Bose-Hubbard model at unity filling factor. We precisely trace out the critical behavior of the system and resolve the region of small insulating gaps, Δ<< J. The critical point is found to be (J/U)_c=0.05974(3), in perfect agreement with the high-order strong-coupling expansion method of Ref. 1. In addition, we present data for the effective mass of particle and hole excitations inside the insulating phase and obtain the critical temperature for the superfluid-normal transition at unity filling factor.

We have performed quantum Monte Carlo simulations to investigate the superfluid behavior of one- and two-dimensional interfaces separating checkerboard solid domains. The system is described by the hard-core Bose-Hubbard Hamiltonian with nearest-neighbor interaction. In accordance with Ref.1, we find that (i) the interface remains superfluid in a wide range of interaction strength before it undergoes a superfluid-insulator transition; (ii) in one dimension, the transition is of the Kosterlitz-Thouless type and is accompanied by the roughening transition, driven by proliferation of charge 1/2 quasiparticles; (iii) in two dimensions, the transition belongs to the 3D U(1) universality class and the interface remains smooth. Similar phenomena are expected for domain walls in quantum antiferromagnets.

We report results of quantum Monte Carlo simulations of the Bose-Hubbard model in three dimensions. Critical parameters for the superfluid-to-Mott-insulator transition are determined with significantly higher accuracy than it has been done in the past. In particular, the position of the critical point at filling factor n=1 is found to be at (U/t)_c = 29.34(2), and the insulating gap Delta is measured with accuracy of a few percent of the hopping amplitude t. We obtain the effective mass of particle and hole excitations in the insulating state--with explicit demonstration of the emerging particle-hole symmetry and relativistic dispersion law at the transition tip--along with the sound velocity in the strongly correlated superfluid phase. These parameters are the necessary ingredients to perform analytic estimates of the low temperature (T << Delta) thermodynamics in macroscopic samples. We present accurate thermodynamic curves, including these for specific heat and entropy, for typical insulating (U/t=40) and superfluid (t/U=0.0385) phases. Our data can serve as a basis for accurate experimental thermometry, and a guide for appropriate initial conditions if one attempts to use interacting bosons in quantum information processing.

We study on-site occupation number fluctuations in a system of interacting bosons in an optical lattice. The ground-state distribution is obtained analytically in the limiting cases of strong and weak interaction, and by means of exact Monte Carlo simulations in the strongly correlated regime. As the interaction is increased, the distribution evolves from Poissonian in the non-interacting gas to a sharply peaked distribution in the Mott-insulator (MI) regime. In the special case of large occupation numbers, we demonstrate analytically and check numerically that there exists a wide interval of interaction strength, in which the on-site number fluctuations remain Gaussian and are gradually squeezed until they are of order unity near the superfluid (SF)-MI transition. Recently, the on-site number statistics were studied experimentally in a wide range of lattice potential depths [Phys. Rev. Lett. \textbf{96}, 090401 (2006)]. In our simulations, we are able to directly reproduce experimental conditions using temperature as the only free parameter. Pronounced temperature dependence suggests that measurements of on-site atom number fluctuations can be employed as a reliable method of thermometry in both SF and MI regimes.
