Abstract:
A physically-based method to derive well-posed instances of the two-fluid transport equations for two-phase flow, from the Hamilton principle, is presented. The state of the two-fluid flow is represented by the superficial velocity and the drift-flux, instead of the average velocities of each fluid. A physically-based method to derive well-posed instances of the two-fluid transport equations for two-phase flow, from the Hamilton principle, is presented. The state of the two-fluid flow is represented by the superficial velocity and the drift-flux, instead of the average velocities of each fluid. This generates the conservation equations of the two principal motion modes naturally: the global center-of-mass flow and the relative velocity between fluids. Well-posed equations can be obtained by modelling the storage of kinetic energy in fluctuations structures induced by the interaction between fluids, like wakes and vortexes. In this way, the equations can be regularized without losing in the process the instabilities responsible for flow-patterns formation and transition. A specific case of vertical air-water flow is analyzed showing the capability of the present model to predict the formation of the slug flow regime as trains of non-linear waves.

Behavior-related research areas such as motion prediction/planning, representation/imitation learning, behavior modeling/generation, and algorithm testing, require support from high-quality motion datasets containing interactive driving scenarios with different driving cultures. In this paper, we present an INTERnational, Adversarial and Cooperative moTION dataset (INTERACTION dataset) in interactive driving scenarios with semantic maps. Five features of the dataset are highlighted. 1) The interactive driving scenarios are diverse, including urban/highway/ramp merging and lane changes, roundabouts with yield/stop signs, signalized intersections, intersections with one/two/all-way stops, etc. 2) Motion data from different countries and different continents are collected so that driving preferences and styles in different cultures are naturally included. 3) The driving behavior is highly interactive and complex with adversarial and cooperative motions of various traffic participants. Highly complex behavior such as negotiations, aggressive/irrational decisions and traffic rule violations are densely contained in the dataset, while regular behavior can also be found from cautious car-following, stop, left/right/U-turn to rational lane-change and cycling and pedestrian crossing, etc. 4) The levels of criticality span wide, from regular safe operations to dangerous, near-collision maneuvers. Real collision, although relatively slight, is also included. 5) Maps with complete semantic information are provided with physical layers, reference lines, lanelet connections and traffic rules. The data is recorded from drones and traffic cameras. Statistics of the dataset in terms of number of entities and interaction density are also provided, along with some utilization examples in a variety of behavior-related research areas. The dataset can be downloaded via https://interaction-dataset.com.

We perform a non-linear analysis of a fluid-fluid wavy-stratified flow using a simplified two-fluid model, i.e., the fixed-flux model (FFM) which is an adaptation of shallow water theory for the two-layer problem. Linear analysis using the perturbation method illustrates the short-wave physics leading to the Kelvin-Helmholtz instability (KHI). The interface dynamics are chaotic and analysis beyond the onset of instability is required to understand the non-linear evolution of waves. The two-equation FFM solver based on a higher-order spatio-temporal finite difference discretization scheme is used in the current simulations. The solution methodology is verified and the results are compared with the measurements from a laboratory-scale experiment. The Finite-Time Lyapunov Exponent (FTLE) based on simulations is comparable and slightly higher than the Autocorrelation function (ACF) decay rate, consistent with findings from previous studies. Furthermore, the FTLE is observed to be a strong function of the angle of inclination, while the root mean square (RMS) of the interface height exhibits a square-root dependence. It is demonstrated that this simple 1-D FFM captures the essential chaotic features of the interfacial behavior.

A plasma focus device capable of operating at 0.2 pulses per second during several minutes is used as a source of hard x-rays and fast neutrons. An experimental demonstration of the use of the neutrons emissions for radiation probing of hydrogenated substances is presented, showing a particular application in detecting water concentrations differences in the proximity of the device by elastic scattering. Moreover, the device produces ultrashort hard x-rays pulses useful for introspective images of small objects, static or in fast motion, suitable for the identification of internal submillimetric defects. Clear images of metallic objects shielded by several millimeters iron walls are shown.
