Observation of $Λ_c^+ \to Λa_0(980)^+$ and Evidence for $Σ(1380)^+$ in $Λ_c^+ \to Λπ^+ η$

Abstract: Based on $6.1~\mathrm{fb}^{-1}$ of $e^+e^-$ annihilation data collected at center-of-mass energies from 4.600~GeV to 4.843~GeV with the BESIII detector at the BEPCII collider, a partial wave analysis of $Λ_c^+\toΛπ^+η$ is performed, and branching fractions and decay asymmetry parameters of intermediate processes are determined. The process $Λ_c^+\toΛa_0(980)^+$ is observed for the first time, and… ▽ More Based on $6.1~\mathrm{fb}^{-1}$ of $e^+e^-$ annihilation data collected at center-of-mass energies from 4.600~GeV to 4.843~GeV with the BESIII detector at the BEPCII collider, a partial wave analysis of $Λ_c^+\toΛπ^+η$ is performed, and branching fractions and decay asymmetry parameters of intermediate processes are determined. The process $Λ_c^+\toΛa_0(980)^+$ is observed for the first time, and evidence for the pentaquark candidate $Σ(1380)^+$ decaying into $Λπ^+$ is found with statistical significance larger than $3σ$. The branching fraction product $\mathcal{B}(Λ_{c}^{+} \to Λa_0(980)^+) \; \mathcal{B}( a_0(980)^+ \to π^{+}η)$ is determined to be $(1.05 \pm 0.16_{\mathrm{stat}} \pm 0.05_{\mathrm{syst}} \pm 0.07_{\mathrm{ext}})\%$, which is larger than theoretical calculations by $1 - 2$ orders of magnitude. Here the third (external) systematic is from $\mathcal{B}(Λ_{c}^{+} \to Λπ^+ η)$. Finally, we precisely obtain the absolute branching fraction $\mathcal{B}(Λ_{c}^{+} \to Λπ^+ η) = (1.94 \pm 0.07_{\mathrm{stat}} \pm 0.11_{\mathrm{syst}})\%$. △ Less

Learning secondary tool affordances of human partners using iCub robot's egocentric data

Abstract: Objects, in particular tools, provide several action possibilities to the agents that can act on them, which are generally associated with the term of affordances. A tool is typically designed for a specific purpose, such as driving a nail in the case of a hammer, which we call as the primary affordance. A tool can also be used beyond its primary purpose, in which case we can associate this auxili… ▽ More Objects, in particular tools, provide several action possibilities to the agents that can act on them, which are generally associated with the term of affordances. A tool is typically designed for a specific purpose, such as driving a nail in the case of a hammer, which we call as the primary affordance. A tool can also be used beyond its primary purpose, in which case we can associate this auxiliary use with the term secondary affordance. Previous work on affordance perception and learning has been mostly focused on primary affordances. Here, we address the less explored problem of learning the secondary tool affordances of human partners. To do this, we use the iCub robot to observe human partners with three cameras while they perform actions on twenty objects using four different tools. In our experiments, human partners utilize tools to perform actions that do not correspond to their primary affordances. For example, the iCub robot observes a human partner using a ruler for pushing, pulling, and moving objects instead of measuring their lengths. In this setting, we constructed a dataset by taking images of objects before and after each action is executed. We then model learning secondary affordances by training three neural networks (ResNet-18, ResNet-50, and ResNet-101) each on three tasks, using raw images showing the `initial' and `final' position of objects as input: (1) predicting the tool used to move an object, (2) predicting the tool used with an additional categorical input that encoded the action performed, and (3) joint prediction of both tool used and action performed. Our results indicate that deep learning architectures enable the iCub robot to predict secondary tool affordances, thereby paving the road for human-robot collaborative object manipulation involving complex affordances. △ Less

Imitation of human motion achieves natural head movements for humanoid robots in an active-speaker detection task

They can transmit important cues (e.g., joint attention, speaker detection) that cannot be achieved with verbal interaction alone. This advantage also holds for human-robot interaction. Even though modeling human motions through generative AI models has become an active research area within robotics in recent years, the use of these methods for producing head movements in human-robot interaction remains underexplored. In this work, we employed a generative AI pipeline to produce human-like head movements for a Nao humanoid robot. In addition, we tested the system on a real-time active-speaker tracking task in a group conversation setting. Overall, the results show that the Nao robot successfully imitates human head movements in a natural manner while actively tracking the speakers during the conversation. Data-Juicer Sandbox: A Comprehensive Suite for Multimodal Data-Model Co-development

In response, we pre… ▽ More The emergence of large-scale multi-modal generative models has drastically advanced artificial intelligence, introducing unprecedented levels of performance and functionality. However, optimizing these models remains challenging due to historically isolated paths of model-centric and data-centric developments, leading to suboptimal outcomes and inefficient resource utilization. In response, we present a novel sandbox suite tailored for integrated data-model co-development. This sandbox provides a comprehensive experimental platform, enabling rapid iteration and insight-driven refinement of both data and models. Our proposed "Probe-Analyze-Refine" workflow, validated through applications on state-of-the-art LLaVA-like and DiT based models, yields significant performance boosts, such as topping the VBench leaderboard. We also uncover fruitful insights gleaned from exhaustive benchmarks, shedding light on the critical interplay between data quality, diversity, and model behavior. Abstract: Based on $10.64~\mathrm{fb}^{-1}$ of $e^+e^-$ collision data taken at center-of-mass energies between 4.237 and 4.699 GeV with the BESIII detector, we study the leptonic $D^+_s$ decays using the $e^+e^-\to D^{*+}_{s} D^{*-}_{s}$ process. The branching fractions of $D_s^+\to\ell^+ν_{\ell}\,(\ell=μ,τ)$ are measured to be $\mathcal{B}(D_s^+\toμ^+ν_μ)=(0.547\pm0.026_{\rm stat}\pm0.016_{\rm syst})\%$ a… ▽ More Based on $10.64~\mathrm{fb}^{-1}$ of $e^+e^-$ collision data taken at center-of-mass energies between 4.237 and 4.699 GeV with the BESIII detector, we study the leptonic $D^+_s$ decays using the $e^+e^-\to D^{*+}_{s} D^{*-}_{s}$ process. The product of the decay constant and Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa matrix element $|V_{cs}|$ is determined to be $f_{D_s^+}|V_{cs}|=(246.5\pm5.9_{\rm stat}\pm3.6_{\rm syst}\pm0.5_{\rm input})_{μν}~\mathrm{MeV}$ and $f_{D_s^+}|V_{cs}|=(252.7\pm3.6_{\rm stat}\pm4.5_{\rm syst}\pm0.6_{\rm input}))_{τν}~\mathrm{MeV}$, respectively. Taking the value of $|V_{cs}|$ from a global fit in the Standard Model, we obtain ${f_{D^+_s}}=(252.8\pm6.0_{\rm stat}\pm3.7_{\rm syst}\pm0.6_{\rm input})_{μν}$ MeV and ${f_{D^+_s}}=(259.2\pm3.6_{\rm stat}\pm4.5_{\rm syst}\pm0.6_{\rm input})_{τν}$ MeV, respectively. Conversely, taking the value for $f_{D_s^+}$ from the latest lattice quantum chromodynamics calculation, we obtain $|V_{cs}| =(0.986\pm0.023_{\rm stat}\pm0.014_{\rm syst}\pm0.003_{\rm input})_{μν}$ and $|V_{cs}| = (1.011\pm0.014_{\rm stat}\pm0.018_{\rm syst}\pm0.003_{\rm input})_{τν}$, respectively. △ Less

$β$-DPO: Direct Preference Optimization with Dynamic $β$

However, the performance of DPO is sensitive to the fine-tuning of its trade-off parameter $β$, as well as to the quality of the preference data. However, the performance of DPO is sensitive to the fine-tuning of its trade-off parameter $β$, as well as to the quality of the preference data. We analyze the impact of $β$ and data quality on DPO, uncovering that optimal $β$ values vary with the informativeness of pairwise data. Addressing the limitations of static $β$ values, we introduce a novel framework that dynamically calibrates $β$ at the batch level, informed by data quality considerations. Additionally, our method incorporates $β$-guided data filtering to safeguard against the influence of outliers. Through empirical evaluation, we demonstrate that our dynamic $β$ adjustment technique significantly improves DPO's performance across a range of models and datasets, offering a more robust and adaptable training paradigm for aligning LLMs with human feedback. Based on the powerful LLMs, multi-modal LLMs (MLLMs) extend the modality from text to a broader spectrum of domains, attracting widespread attention due to the broader range of application scenarios. As LLMs and MLLMs rely on vast amounts of model parameters and data to achieve emergent capabilities, the importance of data is receiving increasingly widespread attention and recognition. Tracing and analyzing recent data-oriented works for MLLMs, we find that the development of models and data is not two separate paths but rather interconnected. On the one hand, vaster and higher-quality data contribute to better performance of MLLMs, on the other hand, MLLMs can facilitate the development of data. The co-development of multi-modal data and MLLMs requires a clear view of 1) at which development stage of MLLMs can specific data-centric approaches be employed to enhance which capabilities, and 2) by utilizing which capabilities and acting as which roles can models contribute to multi-modal data. To promote the data-model co-development for MLLM community, we systematically review existing works related to MLLMs from the data-model co-development perspective. Towards Robust Alignment of Language Models: Distributionally Robustifying Direct Preference Optimization

We categorize noise into pointwise noise, which includes low-quality data points, and pairwise noise, which encompasses erroneous data pair associations that affect preference rankings. Utilizing Distributionally Robus… ▽ More This study addresses the challenge of noise in training datasets for Direct Preference Optimization (DPO), a method for aligning Large Language Models (LLMs) with human preferences. We categorize noise into pointwise noise, which includes low-quality data points, and pairwise noise, which encompasses erroneous data pair associations that affect preference rankings. Utilizing Distributionally Robust Optimization (DRO), we enhance DPO's resilience to these types of noise. Our theoretical insights reveal that DPO inherently embeds DRO principles, conferring robustness to pointwise noise, with the regularization coefficient $β$ playing a critical role in its noise resistance. Extending this framework, we introduce Distributionally Robustifying DPO (Dr. DPO), which integrates pairwise robustness by optimizing against worst-case pairwise scenarios. The novel hyperparameter $β'$ in Dr. DPO allows for fine-tuned control over data pair reliability, providing a strategic balance between exploration and exploitation in noisy training environments. Empirical evaluations demonstrate that Dr. DPO substantially improves the quality of generated text and response accuracy in preference datasets, showcasing enhanced performance in both noisy and noise-free settings. Study of the decay and production properties of $D_{s1}(2536)$ and $D_{s2}^*(2573)$

Abstract: The $e^+e^-\rightarrow D_s^+D_{s1}(2536)^-$ and $e^+e^-\rightarrow D_s^+D^*_{s2}(2573)^-$ processes are studied using data samples collected with the BESIII detector at center-of-mass energies from 4.530 to 4.946~GeV. The absolute branching fractions of $D_{s1}(2536)^- \rightarrow \bar{D}^{*0}K^-$ and $D_{s2}^*(2573)^- \rightarrow \bar{D}^0K^-$ are measured for the first time to be… ▽ More The $e^+e^-\rightarrow D_s^+D_{s1}(2536)^-$ and $e^+e^-\rightarrow D_s^+D^*_{s2}(2573)^-$ processes are studied using data samples collected with the BESIII detector at center-of-mass energies from 4.530 to 4.946~GeV. The absolute branching fractions of $D_{s1}(2536)^- \rightarrow \bar{D}^{*0}K^-$ and $D_{s2}^*(2573)^- \rightarrow \bar{D}^0K^-$ are measured for the first time to be $(35.9\pm 4.8\pm 3.5)\%$ and $(37.4\pm 3.1\pm 4.6)\%$, respectively. The measurements are in tension with predictions based on the assumption that the $D_{s1}(2536)$ and $D_{s2}^*(2573)$ are dominated by a bare $c\bar{s}$ component. The $e^+e^-\rightarrow D_s^+D_{s1}(2536)^-$ and $e^+e^-\rightarrow D_s^+D^*_{s2}(2573)^-$ cross sections are measured, and a resonant structure at around 4.6~GeV with a width of 50~MeV is observed for the first time with a statistical significance of $15σ$ in the $e^+e^-\rightarrow D_s^+D^*_{s2}(2573)^-$ process. It could be the $Y(4626)$ found by the Belle collaboration in the $D_s^+D_{s1}(2536)^{-}$ final state, since they have similar masses and widths. There is also evidence for a structure at around 4.75~GeV in both processes. △ Less

The branching fractions of the two decays $J/ψ\to p \bar{p} η(η\to γγ)$ and $J/ψ\to p \bar{p} η(η\to π^+ π^- π^0)$ are measured individually to be $\mathcal{B}(J/ψ\to p \bar{p} η(η\to γγ)) = (1.480 \pm 0.001 \pm 0.024)\times\,10^{-3}$ and $\mathcal{B}(J/ψ\to p \bar{p} η(η\to π^+ π^- π^0)) = (1.557 \pm 0.003 \pm 0.038)\times\,10^{-3}$, where the first uncertainties are statistical and the second systematic. Both results are compatible within their uncorrelated systematic uncertainties. The combined result is $\mathcal{B}(J/ψ\to p \bar{p} η)=(1.495 \pm 0.001 \pm 0.023)\times\,10^{-3}$ where the first uncertainty is the combined statistical uncertainty and the second one the combined systematic uncertainty of both analyses, incorporating correlations between them. In addition, the $p \bar{p}$ threshold region is investigated for a potential threshold enhancement, and no evidence for one is observed. △ Less

Improved measurement of the semileptonic decay $D^+_{s}\to K^0 e^+ν_e$

Abstract: Analyzing $e^+e^-$ collision data corresponding to an integrated luminosity of $7.33~\mathrm{fb}^{-1}$ collected at center-of-mass energies between 4.128 and 4.226~GeV with the BESIII detector, we measure the branching fraction of the semileptonic decay $D^+_{s}\to K^0 e^+ν_e$ to be $(2.98\pm0.23\pm0.12)\times10^{-3}$. The $D_s^+\to K^0$ hadronic form factor is determined from the differential decay rate of $D^+_s\to K^0 e^+ν_e$ to be $f^{K^0}_+(0)=0.636\pm0.049\pm0.013$. For both measurements, the first uncertainty is statistical and the second systematic. The branching fraction and form factor measurements are factors of 1.6 and 1.7 more precise than the previous world averages, respectively. △ Less

VertiMRF: Differentially Private Vertical Federated Data Synthesis

However, without a theoretical privacy guarantee, a synthetic dataset would still leak some sensitive information. Differential privacy is thus widely adopted to safeguard data synthesis by strictly limiting the released information. This technique is advantageous yet presents sign… ▽ More Data synthesis is a promising solution to share data for various downstream analytic tasks without exposing raw data. However, without a theoretical privacy guarantee, a synthetic dataset would still leak some sensitive information. Differential privacy is thus widely adopted to safeguard data synthesis by strictly limiting the released information. This technique is advantageous yet presents significant challenges in the vertical federated setting, where data attributes are distributed among different data parties. The main challenge lies in maintaining privacy while efficiently and precisely reconstructing the correlation among cross-party attributes. In this paper, we propose a novel algorithm called VertiMRF, designed explicitly for generating synthetic data in the vertical setting and providing differential privacy protection for all information shared from data parties. We introduce techniques based on the Flajolet-Martin sketch (or frequency oracle) for encoding local data satisfying differential privacy and estimating cross-party marginals. We provide theoretical privacy and utility proof for encoding in this multi-attribute data. Collecting the locally generated private Markov Random Field (MRF) and the sketches, a central server can reconstruct a global MRF, maintaining the most useful information. Additionally, we introduce two techniques tailored for datasets with large attribute domain sizes, namely dimension reduction and consistency enforcement. These two techniques allow flexible and inconsistent binning strategies of local private MRF and the data sketching module, which can preserve information to the greatest extent. We conduct extensive experiments on four real-world datasets to evaluate the effectiveness of VertiMRF. FedBiOT: LLM Local Fine-tuning in Federated Learning without Full Model

However, many domain-specific data are privately distributed across multiple owners. Thus, this dilemma raises the interest in how to perform LLM fine-tuning in federated learning (FL). However, confronted with limited computation and communication capacities, FL clients struggle to fine-tune an LLM effectively. To this end, we introduce FedBiOT, a resource-efficient LLM fine-tuning approach to FL. Specifically, our method involves the server generating a compressed LLM and aligning its performance with the full model. Subsequently, the clients fine-tune a lightweight yet important part of the compressed model, referred to as an adapter. Notice that as the server has no access to the private data owned by the clients, the data used for alignment by the server has a different distribution from the one used for fine-tuning by clients. We formulate the problem into a bi-level optimization problem to minimize the negative effect of data discrepancy and derive the updating rules for the server and clients. We conduct extensive experiments on LLaMA-2, empirically showing that the adapter has exceptional performance when reintegrated into the global LLM. The results also indicate that the proposed FedBiOT significantly reduces resource consumption compared to existing benchmarks, all while achieving comparable performance levels. △ Less

A direct digital synthesizer and an analog electronic circuit are integrated to generate an intermediate frequency (IF) linearly frequency-modulated (LFM) signal with a tunable center frequency from 2.5 to 9.5 GHz and an instantaneous bandwidth of 1 GHz.… ▽ More In this work, a microwave photonic prototype for concurrent radar detection and spectrum sensing is proposed, designed, built, and investigated. A direct digital synthesizer and an analog electronic circuit are integrated to generate an intermediate frequency (IF) linearly frequency-modulated (LFM) signal with a tunable center frequency from 2.5 to 9.5 GHz and an instantaneous bandwidth of 1 GHz. The IF LFM signal is converted to the optical domain via an intensity modulator and then filtered by a fiber Bragg grating (FBG) to generate only two 2nd-order optical LFM sidebands. In radar detection, the two optical LFM sidebands beat with each other to generate a frequency-and-bandwidth-quadrupled LFM signal, which is used for ranging, radial velocity measurement, and imaging. By changing the center frequency of the IF LFM signal, the radar function can be operated within 8 to 40 GHz. In spectrum sensing, one 2nd-order optical LFM sideband is selected by another FBG, which then works in conjunction with the stimulated Brillouin scattering gain spectrum to map the frequency of the signal under test to time with an instantaneous measurement bandwidth of 2 GHz. By using a frequency shift module to adjust the pump frequency, the frequency measurement range can be adjusted from 0 to 40 GHz. The prototype is comprehensively studied and tested, which is capable of achieving a range resolution of 3.75 cm, a range error of less than $\pm$ 2 cm, a radial velocity error within $\pm$ 1 cm/s, delivering clear imaging of multiple small targets, and maintaining a frequency measurement error of less than $\pm$ 7 MHz and a frequency resolution of better than 20 MHz. △ Less

The branching fraction of the decay $η_{c}(1S) \to 2(π^{+}π^{-})η$, which is found to have a strong dependence on the interference pattern between $η_c(1S)$ and non-$η_c(1S)$ processes, is measur… ▽ More Based on $2.7 \times 10^9~ψ(3686)$ decays collected with the BESIII detector, the radiative decay $ψ(3686)\to\gamma2(π^{+}π^{-})η$ is investigated to measure properties of S- and P-wave charmonium states. The branching fraction of the decay $η_{c}(1S) \to 2(π^{+}π^{-})η$, which is found to have a strong dependence on the interference pattern between $η_c(1S)$ and non-$η_c(1S)$ processes, is measured in both destructive and constructive interference scenarios for the first time. The mass and width of the $η_{c}(1S)$ are measured to be $M=(2984.14 \pm 0.13 \pm 0.38)$ MeV/$c^{2}$ and $Γ=(28.82 \pm 0.11 \pm 0.82)$ MeV, respectively. Clear signals for the decays of the $χ_{cJ}(J=0,1,2)$ and the $η_{c}(2S)$ to $2(π^{+}π^{-})η$ are also observed for the first time, and the corresponding branching fractions are measured. The ratio of the branching fractions between the $η_{c}(2S)$ and $η_{c}(1S)$ decays is significantly lower than the theoretical prediction, which might suggest different dynamics in their decays. △ Less

This shift, evident in organizations like Uber and Meta, introduces operational challenges including massive, read-heavy I/O traffic with potential throttling, as well as skewed and fragmented data access patterns. Addressing these challenges, this paper introduces the Alluxio local (edge) cache, a highly effective architectural optimization tailored for such environments. This embeddable cache, optimized for petabyte-scale data analytics, leverages local SSD resources to alleviate network I/O and API call pressures, significantly improving data transfer efficiency. Integrated with OLAP systems like Presto and storage services like HDFS, the Alluxio local cache has demonstrated its effectiveness in handling large-scale, enterprise-grade workloads over three years of deployment at Uber and Meta. The $h_c \to π^+ π^- π^0$ decay is observed with a significance of 9.6$σ$ after taking into account systematic uncertainties. Evidences for… ▽ More Based on $(2712.4\pm 14.3)\times10^{6}$ $ψ(3686)$ events, we investigate four hadronic decay modes of the $P$-wave charmonium spin-singlet state $h_c(^1P_1) \to h^+ h^- π^0/η$ ($h=π$ or $K$) via the process $ψ(3686) \to π^{0}h_c$ at BESIII. The $h_c \to π^+ π^- π^0$ decay is observed with a significance of 9.6$σ$ after taking into account systematic uncertainties. Evidences for $h_c \to K^+ K^- π^0$ and $h_c \to K^+ K^- η$ are found with significances of $3.5σ$ and $3.3σ$, respectively, after considering the systematic uncertainties. The branching fractions of these decays are measured to be $\mathcal{B}(h_c \to π^+ π^- π^0)=(1.36\pm0.16\pm0.14)\times10^{-3}$, $\mathcal{B}(h_c \to K^+ K^- π^0)=(3.26\pm0.84\pm0.36)\times10^{-4}$, and $\mathcal{B}(h_c \to K^+ K^- η)=(3.13\pm1.08\pm0.38)\times10^{-4}$, where the first uncertainties are statistical and the second are systematic. The branching fractions are ${\mathcal B}(D_s^+\to ηe^+ν_e)=(2.35\pm0.11_{\rm stat}\pm 0.10_{\rm syst})\%,$ ${\mathcal B}(D_s^+\to η^\prime e^+ν_e)=(0.82\pm0.09_{\rm stat}\pm 0.04_{\rm syst})\%,$ ${\mathcal B}(D_s^+\to φe^+ν_e)=(2.21\pm0.16_{\rm stat}\pm 0.11_{\rm syst})\%,$ ${\mathcal B}(D_s^+\to f_0(980) e^+ν_e,f_0(980)\toπ^+π^-)=(0.15\pm0.02_{\rm stat}\pm 0.01_{\rm syst})\%,$ ${\mathcal B}(D_s^+\to K^0 e^+ν_e)=(0.24\pm0.04_{\rm stat}\pm 0.01_{\rm syst})\%,$ and ${\mathcal B}(D_s^+\to K^{*0} e^+ν_e)=(0.19\pm0.03_{\rm stat}\pm 0.01_{\rm syst})\%.$ These results are consistent with those measured via the $e^+e^-\to D_s^{*\pm}D_s^{\mp}$ process by BESIII and CLEO. The hadronic transition form factors $D^+_s\to ηe^+ν_e$, $D^+_s\to η^\prime e^+ν_e$, and $D^+_s\to K^0 e^+ν_e$ at four-momentum transfer squared $q^2$ = 0 are determined to be $f^η_+(0) = 0.482 \pm 0.011_{\rm stat} \pm 0.009_{\rm syst}\pm0.004_{\rm input},$ $f^{η^{\prime}}_+(0) = 0.562 \pm 0.031_{\rm stat} \pm 0.014_{\rm syst}\pm0.003_{\rm input},$ and $f^{K^0}_+(0) = 0.624 \pm 0.052_{\rm stat} \pm 0.013_{\rm syst}\pm0.002_{\rm input}.$ △ Less

PRICE: A Pretrained Model for Cross-Database Cardinality Estimation

PRICE takes low-level but transferable features… ▽ More Cardinality estimation (CardEst) is essential for optimizing query execution plans. Recent ML-based CardEst methods achieve high accuracy but face deployment challenges due to high preparation costs and lack of transferability across databases. In this paper, we propose PRICE, a PRetrained multI-table CardEst model, which addresses these limitations. PRICE takes low-level but transferable features w.r.t. data distributions and query information and elegantly applies self-attention models to learn meta-knowledge to compute cardinality in any database. It is generally applicable to any unseen new database to attain high estimation accuracy, while its preparation cost is as little as the basic one-dimensional histogram-based CardEst methods. Moreover, PRICE can be finetuned to further enhance its performance on any specific database. We pretrained PRICE using 30 diverse datasets, completing the process in about 5 hours with a resulting model size of only about 40MB. Evaluations show that PRICE consistently outperforms existing methods, achieving the highest estimation accuracy on several unseen databases and generating faster execution plans with lower overhead. After finetuning with a small volume of databasespecific queries, PRICE could even find plans very close to the optimal ones. Meanwhile, PRICE is generally applicable to different settings such as data updates, data scaling, and query workload shifts. Data Mixing Made Efficient: A Bivariate Scaling Law for Language Model Pretraining

Specifically, we propose a unified scaling law, termed $\textbf{BiMix}$, which accurately models the bivariate scaling behaviors of both data quantity and mixing proportions. We conduct systematic experiments and provide empirical evidence for the predictive power and fundamental principles of $\textbf{BiMix}$. Notably, our findings reveal that entropy-driven training-free data mixtures can achieve comparable or even better performance than more resource-intensive methods. Reinforcement learning from human feedback (RLHF) employs a costly reward model to provide feedback for on-policy sampling responses. Recently, offline methods that directly fit responses with binary preferences in the dataset have emerged as alternatives. However, existing methods do not explicitly model preference strength information, which is crucial for distinguishing different response pairs. To overcome this limitation, we propose Online Self-Preferring (OSP) language models to learn from self-generated response pairs and self-judged preference strengths. For each prompt and corresponding self-generated responses, we introduce a ranked pairing method to construct multiple response pairs with preference strength information. We then propose the soft-preference cross-entropy loss to leverage such information. Empirically, we demonstrate that leveraging preference strength is crucial for avoiding overfitting and enhancing alignment performance. OSP achieves state-of-the-art alignment performance across various metrics in two widely used human preference datasets. OSP is parameter-efficient and more robust than the dominant online method, RLHF when limited offline data are available and generalizing to out-of-domain tasks. The measurements are consistent with the previous results with improved precision by a factor of 2. The results are valuable for gaining a deeper understanding of $η-η^\prime$ mixing, and its manifestation within quantum chromodynamics. No significant signal is found for the decay $h_c\rightarrowγπ^{0}$, and an upper limit is placed on its branching fraction of $\mathscr{B}(h_c\rightarrowγπ^{0})<5.0\times10^{-5}$, at the 90\% confidence level. △ Less

UniDM: A Unified Framework for Data Manipulation with Large Language Models

They exhibit bright benefits in terms of performance but still requir… ▽ More Designing effective data manipulation methods is a long standing problem in data lakes. Traditional methods, which rely on rules or machine learning models, require extensive human efforts on training data collection and tuning models. Recent methods apply Large Language Models (LLMs) to resolve multiple data manipulation tasks. They exhibit bright benefits in terms of performance but still require customized designs to fit each specific task. This is very costly and can not catch up with the requirements of big data lake platforms. In this paper, inspired by the cross-task generality of LLMs on NLP tasks, we pave the first step to design an automatic and general solution to tackle with data manipulation tasks. We propose UniDM, a unified framework which establishes a new paradigm to process data manipulation tasks using LLMs. UniDM formalizes a number of data manipulation tasks in a unified form and abstracts three main general steps to solve each task. We develop an automatic context retrieval to allow the LLMs to retrieve data from data lakes, potentially containing evidence and factual information. For each step, we design effective prompts to guide LLMs to produce high quality results. By our comprehensive evaluation on a variety of benchmarks, our UniDM exhibits great generality and state-of-the-art performance on a wide variety of data manipulation tasks. △ Less

Abstract: The process $e^{+}e^{-}\to p\bar{p}π^{0}$ is studied at 20 center-of-mass energies ranging from 2.1000 to 3.0800 GeV using 636.8 pb$^{-1}$ of data collected with the BESIII detector operating at the BEPCII collider. When to Trust LLMs: Aligning Confidence with Response Quality

This limitation highlights the importance of discerning when to trust LLMs, especially in safety-critical domains. This limitation highlights the importance of discerning when to trust LLMs, especially in safety-critical domains. Existing methods often express reliability by confidence level, however, their effectiveness is limited by the lack of objective guidance. To address this, we propose CONfidence-Quality-ORDer-preserving alignment approach (CONQORD), which leverages reinforcement learning guided by a tailored dual-component reward function. This function integrates quality reward and order-preserving alignment reward functions. Specifically, the order-preserving reward incentivizes the model to verbalize greater confidence for responses of higher quality to align the order of confidence and quality. Experiments demonstrate that CONQORD significantly improves the alignment performance between confidence and response accuracy, without causing over-cautious. Furthermore, the aligned confidence provided by CONQORD informs when to trust LLMs, and acts as a determinant for initiating the retrieval process of external knowledge. With the $e^+e^-\toωX(3872)$ process, the branching fraction ratio $R\equiv\frac{\mathcal{B}(X(3872)\toγJ/ψ)}{\mathcal{B}(X(3872)\toπ^+π^- J/ψ)}$ is measured to be… ▽ More Using data samples with an integrated luminosity of $4.5~\text{fb}^{-1}$ collected by the BESIII detector at center-of-mass energies ranging from 4.66 to 4.95 GeV, we study the processes of $e^+e^-\toωX(3872)$ and $e^+e^-\toγX(3872)$. With the $e^+e^-\toωX(3872)$ process, the branching fraction ratio $R\equiv\frac{\mathcal{B}(X(3872)\toγJ/ψ)}{\mathcal{B}(X(3872)\toπ^+π^- J/ψ)}$ is measured to be $0.38\pm0.20_\text{stat.}\pm0.01_\text{syst.}$ ($R< 0.83$ at 90\% confidence level). In addition, we measure the ratio of the average cross section of $e^+e^-\toωX(3872)$ to $e^+e^-\toωχ_{c1}(ωχ_{c2})$ to be $σ_{ωX(3872)}/σ_{ωχ_{c1}}~(σ_{ωX(3872)}/σ_{ωχ_{c2}})=5.2\pm1.0_\text{stat.}\pm1.9_\text{syst.}~ (5.5\pm1.1_\text{stat.}\pm2.4_\text{syst.})$. Finally, we search for the process of $e^+e^-\toγX(3872)$, and no obvious signal is observed. The upper limit on the ratio of the average cross section of $e^+e^-\toγX(3872)$ to $e^+e^-\toωX(3872)$ is set as $σ_{γX(3872)}/σ_{ωX(3872)}<0.23$ at 90\% confidence level. △ Less

Demystify Adult Learning: A Social Network and Large Language Model Assisted Approach

It however is challenging, and adult learners face unique challenges such as balancing education with other life responsibilities. Collecting feedback from adult learners is effective in understanding their concerns and improving learning experiences, and social networks provide a rich source of real-time sentiment data from adult learners. Machine learning technologies especially large language models (LLMs) perform well in automating sentiment analysis. However, none of such models is specialized for adult learning with accurate sentiment understanding. In this paper, we present A-Learn, which enhances adult learning sentiment analysis by customizing existing general-purpose LLMs with domain-specific datasets for adult learning. We collect adult learners' comments from social networks and label the sentiment of each comment with an existing LLM to form labelled datasets tailored for adult learning. The datasets are used to customize A-Learn from several base LLMs. We conducted experimental studies and the results reveal A-Learn's competitive sentiment analysis performance, achieving up to 91.3% accuracy with 20% improvement over the base LLM. A-Learn is also employed for word cloud analysis to identify key concerns of adult learners. The research outcome of this study highlights the importance of applying machine learning with educational expertise for teaching improvement and educational innovations that benefit adult learning and adult learners. △ Less

Relevant or Random: Can LLMs Truly Perform Analogical Reasoning?

One key finding in psychology is that compared with irrelevant past experiences, recalling relevant ones can help humans better handle new tasks. Coincidentally, the NLP community has also recently found that self-generating relevant examples in the context can help large language models (LLMs) better solve a given problem than hand-crafted prompts. However, it is yet not clear whether relevance is the key factor eliciting such capability, i.e., can LLMs benefit more from self-generated relevant examples than irrelevant ones? In this work, we systematically explore whether LLMs can truly perform analogical reasoning on a diverse set of reasoning tasks. With extensive experiments and analysis, we show that self-generated random examples can surprisingly achieve comparable or even better performance, e.g., 4% performance boost on GSM8K with random biological examples. We find that the accuracy of self-generated examples is the key factor and subsequently design two improved methods with significantly reduced inference costs. Overall, we aim to advance a deeper understanding of LLM analogical reasoning and hope this work stimulates further research in the design of self-generated contexts. △ Less

VFMM3D: Releasing the Potential of Image by Vision Foundation Model for Monocular 3D Object Detection

Nevertheless, directly predicting the coordinates of objects in 3D space from monocular images poses challenges. Therefore, an effective solution involves transforming monocular images into LiDAR-like representations and employing a LiDAR-based 3D object detector to predict the 3D coordinates of objects. The key step in this method is accurately converting the monocular image into a reliable point cloud form. In this paper, we present VFMM3D, an innovative approach that leverages the capabilities of Vision Foundation Models (VFMs) to accurately transform single-view images into LiDAR point cloud representations. VFMM3D utilizes the Segment Anything Model (SAM) and Depth Anything Model (DAM) to generate high-quality pseudo-LiDAR data enriched with rich foreground information. Specifically, the Depth Anything Model (DAM) is employed to generate dense depth maps. Subsequently, the Segment Anything Model (SAM) is utilized to differentiate foreground and background regions by predicting instance masks. These predicted instance masks and depth maps are then combined and projected into 3D space to generate pseudo-LiDAR points. Finally, any object detectors based on point clouds can be utilized to predict the 3D coordinates of objects. Comprehensive experiments are conducted on the challenging 3D object detection dataset KITTI. Our VFMM3D establishes a new state-of-the-art performance. Abstract: We report the first amplitude analysis of the decays $D^{0} \to π^{+} π^{-} η$ and $D^{+} \rightarrow π^{+}π^{0}η$ using a data sample taken with the BESIII detector at the center-of-mass energy of 3.773 GeV, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 7.9 ${\rm fb}^{-1}$. The contribution from the process $D^{0(+)} \to a_{0}(980)^{+} π^{-(0)}$ is significantly larger than the… ▽ More We report the first amplitude analysis of the decays $D^{0} \to π^{+} π^{-} η$ and $D^{+} \rightarrow π^{+}π^{0}η$ using a data sample taken with the BESIII detector at the center-of-mass energy of 3.773 GeV, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 7.9 ${\rm fb}^{-1}$. The contribution from the process $D^{0(+)} \to a_{0}(980)^{+} π^{-(0)}$ is significantly larger than the $D^{0(+)} \to a_{0}(980)^{-(0)} π^{+}$ contribution. The ratios $\mathcal{B}(D^{0} \rightarrow a_{0}(980)^{+}π^{-})/\mathcal{B}(D^{0} \rightarrow a_{0}(980)^{-}π^{+})$ and $\mathcal{B}(D^{+} \rightarrow a_{0}(980)^{+}π^{0})/\mathcal{B}(D^{+} \rightarrow a_{0}(980)^{0}π^{+})$ are measured to be $7.5^{+2.5}_{-0.8\,\mathrm{stat.}}\pm1.7_{\mathrm{syst.}}$ and $2.6\pm0.6_{\mathrm{stat.}}\pm0.3_{\mathrm{syst.}}$, respectively. The measured $D^{0}$ ratio disagrees with the theoretical predictions by orders of magnitudes, thus implying a substantial contribution from final-state interactions. △ Less

By requiring the $e^{+}e^{-}$ invariant mass to be consistent with a $φ(1020)$, $0.98<M(e^{+}e^{-})<1.04$ ~GeV/$c^2$, the decay… ▽ More Using 7.33~fb$^{-1}$ of $e^{+}e^{-}$ collision data collected by the BESIII detector at center-of-mass energies in the range of $\sqrt{s}=4.128 - 4.226$~GeV, we search for the rare decays $D_{s}^+\to h^+(h^{0})e^{+}e^{-}$, where $h$ represents a kaon or pion. By requiring the $e^{+}e^{-}$ invariant mass to be consistent with a $φ(1020)$, $0.98<M(e^{+}e^{-})<1.04$ ~GeV/$c^2$, the decay $D_s^+\toπ^+φ,φ\to e^{+}e^{-}$ is observed with a statistical significance of 7.8$σ$, and evidence for the decay $D_s^+\toρ^+φ,φ\to e^{+}e^{-}$ is found for the first time with a statistical significance of 4.4$σ$. The decay branching fractions are measured to be $\mathcal{B}(D_s^+\toπ^+φ, φ\to e^{+}e^{-} )=(1.17^{+0.23}_{-0.21}\pm0.03)\times 10^{-5}$, and $\mathcal{B}(D_s^+\toρ^+φ, φ\to e^{+}e^{-} )=(2.44^{+0.67}_{-0.62}\pm 0.16)\times 10^{-5}$, where the first uncertainties are statistical and the second systematic. No significant signal for the three four-body decays of $D_{s}^{+}\to π^{+}π^{0}e^{+}e^{-},\ D_{s}^{+}\to K^{+}π^{0}e^{+}e^{-}$, and $D_{s}^{+}\to K_{S}^{0}π^{+}e^{+}e^{-}$ is observed. For $D_{s}^{+}\to π^{+}π^{0}e^{+}e^{-}$, the $φ$ mass region is vetoed to minimize the long-distance effects. The 90$\%$ confidence level upper limits set on the branching fractions of these decays are in the range of $(7.0-8.1)\times 10^{-5}$. △ Less

Search for di-photon decays of an axion-like particle in radiative J/ψdecays

Abstract: Based on $(2.712\pm0.014)\times10^9$ $ψ(3686)$ events collected by the BESIII collaboration, evidence of the hadronic decay $h_c\to K_S^0K^+π^-+c.c.$ is found with a significance of $4.3σ$ in the $ψ(3686)\toπ^0 h_c$ process. A Rationale-centric Counterfactual Data Augmentation Method for Cross-Document Event Coreference Resolution

We formalize the decision-making process of the baseline ECR system using… ▽ More Based on Pre-trained Language Models (PLMs), event coreference resolution (ECR) systems have demonstrated outstanding performance in clustering coreferential events across documents. However, the existing system exhibits an excessive reliance on the `triggers lexical matching' spurious pattern in the input mention pair text. We formalize the decision-making process of the baseline ECR system using a Structural Causal Model (SCM), aiming to identify spurious and causal associations (i.e., rationales) within the ECR task. Leveraging the debiasing capability of counterfactual data augmentation, we develop a rationale-centric counterfactual data augmentation method with LLM-in-the-loop. This method is specialized for pairwise input in the ECR system, where we conduct direct interventions on triggers and context to mitigate the spurious association while emphasizing the causation. Our approach achieves state-of-the-art performance on three popular cross-document ECR benchmarks and demonstrates robustness in out-of-domain scenarios. △ Less
