The spatio-temporal evolution of the energetic particles in the transport time scale in tokamak plasmas is a key issue of the plasmas confinement, especially in burning plasmas. In order to include sources and sinks and collisional slowing down processes, a new solver, ATEP-3D was implemented to simulate the evolution of the EP distribution in the three-dimensional constants of motion (CoM) space. The Fokker-Planck collision operator represented in the CoM space is derived and numerically calculated. The collision coefficients are averaged over the unperturbed orbits to capture the fundamental properties of EPs. ATEP-3D is fully embedded in ITER IMAS framework and combined with the LIGKA/HAGIS codes. The finite volume method and the implicit Crank-Nicholson scheme are adopted due to their optimal numerical properties for transport time scale studies. ATEP-3D allows the analysis of the particle and power balance with the source and sink during the transport process to evaluate the EP confinement properties.

ASDEX Upgrade has developed multiple massive gas injection (MGI) scenarios to investigate runaway electron (RE) dynamics. During the current quench of the MGI induced disruptions, Alfvénic activity is observed in the 300-800 kHz range. With the help of a mode tracing algorithm based on Fourier spectrograms, mode behaviour was classified for 180 discharges. The modes have been identified as global Alfvén eigenmodes using linear gyrokinetic MHD simulations. Changes in the Alfvén continuum during the quench are proposed as explanation for the strong frequency sweep observed. A systematic statistical analysis shows no significant connection of the mode characteristics to the dynamics of the subsequent runaway electron beams. In our studies, the appearance and amplitude of the modes does not seem to affect the potential subsequent runaway beam. Beyond the scope of the 180 investigated dedicated RE experiments, the Alfvénic activity is also observed in natural disruptions with no RE beam forming.

In this work, we use the global electromagnetic and electrostatic gyro kinetic approaches to investigate the effects of zonal flows forced-driven by Alfvén modes due to their excitation by energetic particles (EPs), on the dynamics of ITG (Ion temperature gradient) instabilities. The equilibrium of the 92416 JET tokamak shot is considered. The linear and nonlinear Alfvén modes dynamics, as well as the zonal flow dynamics, are investigated and their respective radial structures and saturation levels are reported. ITG dynamics in the presence of the zonal flows excited by these Alfvén modes are also investigated. We find that, the zonal flows forced-driven by Alfvén modes can significantly impact the ITG dynamics. A zonal flow amplitude scan reveals the existence of an inverse relation between the zonal flow amplitude and the ITG growth rate. These results show that, forced-driven zonal flows can be an important indirect part of turbulence mitigation due to the injection of energetic particles.

Nonlinear simulations of Alfvén modes (AM) driven by energetic particles (EP) in the presence of turbulence are performed with the gyrokinetic particle-in-cell code ORB5. The AMs carry a heat flux, and consequently they nonlinearly modify the plasma temperature profiles. The isolated effect of this modification on the dynamics of turbulence is studied, by means of electrostatic simulations. We find that turbulence is reduced when the profiles relaxed by the AM are used, with respect to the simulation where the unperturbed profiles are used. This is an example of indirect interaction of EPs and turbulence. First, an analytic magnetic equilibrium with circular concentric flux surfaces is considered as a simplified example for this study. Then, an application to an experimentally relevant case of ASDEX Upgrade is discussed.

The confinement of energetic particles (EPs) generated by fusion reactions and external heating methods is crucial for the performance of future fusion devices. However, EP transport can occur due to their interaction with electromagnetic perturbations, affecting heating efficiency and overall performance. Robust reduced models are needed to analyze stability and transport, but their development requires effort. This paper presents an automated IMAS-based workflow for analyzing the time-dependent stability of EP-driven modes, focusing on the linear properties of Toroidal Alfven Eigenmodes (TAEs) in general Tokamak geometry. The workflow utilizes efficient computational methods and reduced models to deliver fast and reproducible results. A demonstration of the workflow's effectiveness was performed, identifying key linear properties of TAEs in various projected ITER scenarios. This approach represents a critical step towards developing tools for analyzing EP transport and optimizing the performance of future fusion reactors.

For magnetic confinement fusion in tokamak plasmas, some of the limitations to the particle and energy confinement times are caused by turbulence and collisions between particles in toroidal geometry, which determine the "anomalous" and the neoclassical transport, respectively. In this work, we focus on the implementation of neoclassical physics in the gyrokinetic code TRIMEG, which is a TRIangular MEsh-based Gyrokinetic code that can handle both the closed and open field line geometries of a divertor tokamak. We report on the implementation of a simplified Lorentz collision operator in TRIMEG. Since the code uses an unstructured mesh, a procedure for calculating the flux surface averages of particle and energy fluxes and the bootstrap current is derived without relying on the poloidal coordinate, which is useful also for other simulations in unstructured meshes. With the newly implemented collision operator, we study electron transport and bootstrap current generation for various simplified and realistic geometries. In comparison to neoclassical theory, good agreement is obtained for the large aspect ratio case regarding the particle and energy fluxes as well as the bootstrap current. However, some discrepancies are observed at moderate aspect ratio and for a case with the realistic geometry of the ASDEX Upgrade tokamak. These deviations can be explained by different treatments and approximations in theory and simulation. In this paper, we demonstrate the capability to calculate the electron transport and bootstrap current generation in TRIMEG, which will allow for the self-consistent inclusion of neoclassical effects in gyrokinetic simulations in the future.

In the event of a tokamak disruption in a D-T plasma, fusion-born alpha particles take several milliseconds longer to thermalise than the background. As the damping rates drop drastically following the several orders of magnitudes drop of temperature, Toroidal Alfven Eigenmodes (TAEs) can be driven by alpha particles in the collapsing plasma before the onset of the current quench. We employ kinetic simulations of the alpha particle distribution and show that the TAEs can reach sufficiently strong saturation amplitudes to cause significant core runaway electron transport in unmitigated ITER disruptions. As the eigenmodes do not extend to the plasma edge, this effect leads to an increase of the runaway electron plateau current. Mitigation via massive material injection however changes the Alfven frequency and can lead to mode suppression. A combination of the TAE-caused core runaway electron transport with other perturbation sources could lead to a drop of runaway current in unmitigated disruptions.

Phys. 440 (2021) 110384] has been upgraded using cubic spline finite elements and full $f$ and $δf$ schemes. The EP-driven TAE has been simulated for the ITPA-TAE case featured by a small electron skin depth $\sim 1.18\times10^{-3}\;{\rm m}$, which is a challenging parameter regime of electromagnetic simulations, especially for the full $f$ model. The simulation results using the $δf$ scheme are in good agreement with previous work. Excellent performance of the mixed variable/pullback scheme has been observed for both full $f$ and $δf$ schemes. Simulations with mixed full $f$ EPs and $δf$ electrons and thermal ions demonstrate the good features of this novel scheme in mitigating the noise level. The full $f$ scheme is a natural choice for EP physics studies which allows a large variation of EP profiles and distributions in velocity space, providing a powerful tool for kinetic studies using realistic experimental distributions related to intermittent and transient plasma activities.

Global electromagnetic gyrokinetic simulations are performed with the Particle-in-Cell code ORB5 for an ITER Pre-Fusion-Power-Operation (PFPO) plasma scenario, with half-field (2.65 T) and half-current (7.5 MA). We report on a 'multi-scale' analysis of the discharge, considering eigenmodes and instabilies across three scale-lengths. Although the scenario will nominally have neutral beam heating with particles injected with 1 MeV, Alfvén eigenmodes are investigated in the absence of such source, and Reversed Shear (RSAE), Toroidal (TAE) and Elliptical (EAE) Alfvén eigenmodes are found with weak damping for moderately low toroidal mode numbers ($10 \leq n \leq 35$). At higher toroidal mode numbers ($40 \leq n \leq 70$), unstable Alfvénic modes have been observed close to rational surfaces and are labelled as Beta-induced Alfvén eigenmodes (BAE)/Alfvénic Ion Temperature Gradient (AITG) modes, since their frequency is associated with the BAE gap and they are driven by the bulk plasma on the Alfvénic continuum. These modes are unstable in the absence of energetic particles, and adding a species of energetic particles (with an isotropic 1 MeV slowing down distribution) has negligible impact on their growth rate. At higher toroidal mode numbers ($150 \lessapprox n < 220$), low frequency microscale instabilities are observed.

The energetic particles are modelled both via the newly implemented isotropic slowing-down and with Maxwellian distribution functions. The comparison of the numerical results shows that modelling the energetic particles with the equivalent Maxwellian rather than with the slowing-down, does not affect the frequency of the driven Alfvén mode, while its growth rate appears to be underestimated with a quantitative difference as large as almost 30 %. Additionally the choice of the isotropic slowing-down allows a better description of the nonlinear modification of the dominant Alfvén mode frequency, while an equivalent Maxwellian underestimates it. A good comparison with the experimental spectrogram is found.

We set up a mapping procedure able to translate the evolution of the radial profile of fast ions, interacting with Toroidal Alfvén Eigenmodes, into the dynamics of an equivalent one dimensional bump-on-tail system. We apply this mapping technique to reproduce ITER relevant simulations, which clearly outlined deviations from the diffusive quasi-linear (QL) model. Our analysis demonstrates the capability of the one-dimensional beam-plasma dynamics to predict the relevant features of the non-linear hybrid LIGKA/HAGIS simulations. In particular, we clearly identify how the deviation from the QL evolutive profiles is due to the presence of avalanche processes. A detailed analysis regarding the reduced dimensionality is also addressed, by means of phase-space slicing based on constants of motion. In the conclusions, we outline the main criticalities and outcomes of the procedure, which must be satisfactorily addressed to make quantitative prediction on the observed outgoing fluxes in a Tokamak device.

Energetic particles produced by neutral beams are observed to excite energetic-particle-driven geodesic acoustic modes (EGAMs) in tokamaks. We study the effects of anisotropy of distribution function of the energetic particles on the excitation of such instabilities with ORB5, a gyrokinetic particle-in-cell code. Numerical results are shown for linear electrostatic simulations with ORB5. The growth rate is found to be sensitively dependent on the phase-space shape of the distribution function. The behavior of the instability is qualitatively compared to the theoretical analysis of dispersion relations. Realistic neutral beam energetic particle anisotropic distributions are obtained from the heating solver RABBIT and are introduced into ORB5 as input distribution function. Results show a dependence of the growth rate on the injection angle. A qualitative comparison to experimental measurements is presented and few disagreements between them are found, being the growth rate in the simulations much lower than that from experiments. An explanation for the difference is advanced.

Experimental diagnostics, analysis tools and simulations represent particle distributions in various forms and coordinates. Algorithms to manage these data are needed on platforms like the ITER Integrated Modelling & Analysis Suite (IMAS), performing tasks such as archiving, modeling, conversion and visualization. A method that accomplishes some of the required tasks for distributions of charged particles with arbitrarily large magnetic drifts in axisymmetric tokamak geometry is described here. Given a magnetic configuration, we first construct a database of guiding center orbits, which serves as a basis for representing particle distributions. The orbit database contains the geometric information needed to perform conversions between arbitrary coordinates, modeling tasks, and resonance analyses. Using that database, an imported or newly modeled distribution is mapped to an exact equilibrium, where the dimensionality is reduced to three constants of motion (CoM). The orbit weight is uniquely given when the input is a true distribution: one that measures the number of physical particles per unit of phase space volume. Less ideal inputs, such as distributions estimated without drifts, or models of particle sources, can also be processed. As an application example, we reconstruct the drift-induced features of a distribution of fusion-born alpha particles in a large tokamak, given only a birth profile, which is not a function of the alpha's CoM. Repeated back-and-forth transformations between CoM space and energy-pitch-cylinder coordinates are performed for verification and as a proof of principle for IMAS.

Long-pulse operation of a self-sustained fusion reactor using toroidal magnetic containment requires control over the content of alpha particles produced by D-T fusion reactions. On the one hand, MeV-class alpha particles must stay confined to heat the plasma. On the other hand, decelerated helium ash must be expelled before diluting the fusion fuel. Our kinetic-magnetohydrodynamic hybrid simulations of a large tokamak plasma confirm the existence of a parameter window where such energy-selective confinement can be accomplished by exploiting internal relaxation events known as `sawtooth crashes'. The physical picture -- consisting of a synergy between magnetic geometry, optimal crash duration and rapid particle motion -- is completed by clarifying the role played by magnetic drifts. Besides causing asymmetry between co- and counter-going particle populations, magnetic drifts determine the size of the confinement window by dictating where and how much `reconnection' occurs in particle orbit topology.

In this work, the gyrokinetic eigenvalue code LIGKA, the drift-kinetic/MHD hybrid code HMGC and the gyrokinetic full-f code TRIMEG-GKX are employed to study the mode structure details of Reversed Shear Alfvén Eigenmodes (RSAEs). Using the parameters from an ASDEX-Upgrade plasma, a benchmark with the three different physical models for RSAE without and with Energetic Particles (EPs) is carried out. Reasonable agreement has been found for the mode frequency and the growth rate. Mode structure symmetry breaking (MSSB) is observed when EPs are included, due to the EPs' non-perturbative effects. It is found that the MSSB properties are featured by a finite radial wave phase velocity, and the linear mode structure can be well described by an analytical complex Gaussian expression $A(s)=e^{- σ(s-s_0)^2}$ with complex parameters $σ$ and $s_0$, where $s$ is the normalized radial coordinate. The mode structure is distorted in opposite {manners} when the EP drive shifted from one side of $q_{min}$ to the other side, and specifically, a non-zero average radial wave number $\langle k_s\rangle$ with opposite signs is generated. The initial EP density profiles and the corresponding mode structures have been used as the input of HAGIS code to study the EP transport. The parallel velocity of EPs is generated in opposite directions, due to different values of the average radial wave number $\langle k_s\rangle$, corresponding to different initial EP density profiles with EP drive shifted away from the $q_{min}$.

Comm, vol. 251, 107072 (2020)] and EUTERPE [V. Kornilov et al, Phys. Plasmas, vol. 11, 3196 (2004)]. The large-aspect-ratio tokamak, down-scaled ITER, and Wendelstein 7-X geometries are considered. The main goal is to increase the plasma beta, the machine size, the ion-to-electron mass ratio, as well as to include realistic-geometry features in such simulations. The associated numerical requirements and the computational cost for the cases on computer systems with massive GPU deployments are investigated. These are necessary steps to enable electromagnetic turbulence simulations in future reactor plasmas.

In tokamak plasmas, the interaction among the micro-turbulence, zonal flows (ZFs) and energetic particles (EPs) can affect the turbulence saturation level and the consequent confinement quality and thus, is important for future burning plasmas. In this work, the EP anisotropy effects on the ZF residual level are studied by using anisotropic EP distributions with dependence on pitch. Significant effects on the long wavelength ZFs have been found when small to moderate width around the dominant pitch in the EP distribution function is assumed. In addition, it is found that ZF residual level is enhanced by barely passing/trapped and/or deeply trapped EPs, but it is suppressed by well passing and/or intermediate trapped EPs. Numerical calculation shows that for ASDEX Upgrade plasmas, typical EP distribution functions can bring in -3%~+5.5% mitigation/enhancement in ZF residual level, depending on the EP distribution functions.

This paper presents a study of the interaction between Alfvén modes and zonal structures, considering a realistic ASDEX Upgrade equilibrium. The results of gyrokinetic simulations with the global, electromagnetic, particle-in-cell code ORB5 are presented, where the modes are driven unstable by energetic particles with a bump-on-tail equilibrium distribution function, with radial density gradient. Two regimes have been observed: at low energetic particles concentration, the Alfvén mode saturates at much higher level in presence of zonal structures; on the other hand at high energetic particles concentration the difference is less pronounced. The former regime is characterized by the zonal structure (identified as an energetic particle driven geodesic acoustic mode), being more unstable than the Alfvén mode. In the latter regime the Alfvén mode is more unstable than the zonal structure. The theoretical explanation is given in terms of a 3-wave coupling of the energetic particle driven geodesic acoustic mode and Alfvén mode, mediated by the curvature-pressure coupling term of the energetic particles.

Linear simulations show that elliptic Alfvén eigenmodes and odd-parity TAEs are only weakly damped but not excited by alpha particles, whose drive favours even-parity TAEs. Low mode number TAEs are found to be global, requiring global treatment. Nonlinearly, even with double the nominal EP density, single mode simulations lead to saturation with negligible EP transport however multi-mode simulations predict that with double the nominal EP density, enhanced saturation and significant EP redistribution will occur.

Fusion-born alpha particles in ITER disruption simulations are investigated as a possible drive of Alfvénic instabilities. The ability of these waves to expel runaway electron (RE) seed particles is explored in the pursuit of a passive, inherent RE mitigation scenario. The spatiotemporal evolution of the alpha particle distribution during the disruption is calculated using the linearized Fokker-Planck solver CODION coupled to a fluid disruption simulation. These simulations are done in the limit of no alpha particle transport during the thermal quench, which can be seen as a most pessimistic situation where there is also no RE seed transport. Under these assumptions, the radial anisotropy of the resulting alpha population provides free energy to drive Alfvénic modes during the quench phase of the disruption. We use the linear gyrokinetic magnetohydrodynamic code LIGKA to calculate the Alfvén spectrum and find that the equilibrium is capable of sustaining a wide range of modes. The self-consistent evolution of the mode amplitudes and the alpha distribution is calculated utilizing the wave-particle interaction tool HAGIS. Intermediate mode number ($n=7-15,~22-26$) Toroidal Alfvén Eigenmodes (TAEs) are shown to saturate at an amplitude of up to $δB /B \approx 0.1$\% in the spatial regimes crucial for RE seed formation. We find that the mode amplitudes are predicted to be sufficiently large to permit the possibility of significant radial transport of runaway electrons.

The nonlinear dynamics of beta-induced Alfvén Eigenmodes (BAE) driven by energetic particles (EP) in the presence of ion-temperature-gradient (ITG) turbulence is investigated, by means of selfconsistent global gyrokinetic simulations and analytical theory. A tokamak magnetic equilibrium with large aspect ratio and reversed shear is considered. A previous study of this configuration has shown that the electron species plays an important role in determining the nonlinear saturation level of a BAE in the absence of turbulence [A. Biancalani, et al., J. Plasma Phys. (2020)]. Here, we extend the study to a turbulent plasma. The EPs are found modify the heat fluxes by introducing energy at the large spatial scales, mainly at the toroidal mode number of the dominant BAE and its harmonics. In this regime, BAEs are found to carry a strong electron heat flux. The feed-back of the global relaxation of the temperature profiles induced by the BAE, and on the turbulence dynamics, is also discussed.

In this work, an implicit scheme for particle-in-cell/Fourier electromagnetic simulations is developed and applied to studies of Alfvén waves in one dimension and three-dimensional tokamak plasmas. An analytical treatment is introduced to achieve efficient convergence of the iterative solution of the implicit field-particle system. First, its application to the one-dimensional uniform plasma demonstrates its applicability in a broad range of $β/m_e$ values. Second, toroidicity induced Alfvén eigenmodes (TAE) are simulated in a three-dimensional axisymmetric tokamak plasma, using the widely studied case defined by the International Tokamak Physics Activity (ITPA) Energetic Particle (EP) Topical Group. The real frequency and the growth (or damping) rate of the TAE with (or without) EPs agree with previous results reasonably well. The full f electromagnetic particle scheme established in this work provides a possible natural choice for EP transport studies where large profile variation and arbitrary particle distribution functions need to be treated in kinetic simulations.

Once the AM saturates in the presence of the fully developed turbulence, the ion heat flux is dominated by the AM and its main harmonics. Turbulence in tokamaks generates radially sheared zonal flows. Their oscillatory counterparts, geodesic acoustic modes (GAMs), appear due to the action of the magnetic field curvature. The GAMs can be driven unstable by an anisotropic energetic particle (EP) population leading to the formation of global radial structures, called EGAMs. The EGAMs can redistribute EP energy to the bulk plasma through collisionless wave-particle interaction. In such a way, the EGAMs might contribute to the plasma heating. Thus, investigation of EGAM properties, especially in the velocity space, is necessary for precise understanding of the transport phenomena in tokamak plasmas.
In this work, the nonlinear dynamics of EGAMs without considering the mode interaction with the turbulence is investigated with the help of a Mode-Particle-Resonance (MPR) diagnostic implemented in the global gyrokinetic particle-in-cell code ORB5. An ASDEX Upgrade discharge is chosen as a reference case for this investigation due to its rich EP nonlinear dynamics. An experimentally relevant magnetic field configuration, thermal species profiles and an EP density profile are taken for EGAM chirping modelling and its comparison with available empirical data. The same magnetic configuration is used to explore energy transfer by the mode from the energetic particles to the thermal plasma including kinetic electron effects. For a given EGAM level the plasma heating by the mode can be significantly enhanced by varying the EP parameters. Electron dynamics decreases the EGAM saturation amplitude and consequently reduces the plasma heating, even though the mode transfers its energy to thermal ions much more than to electrons.

An efficient particle positioning (particle-triangle mapping) scheme for the charge deposition and field scattering using an intermediate grid as the search index for triangles has been implemented and a significant speed-up by a factor of $\sim30$ is observed as compared with the brute force scheme for a medium-size simulation. The TRIMEG (TRIangular MEsh based Gyrokinetic) code has been developed. As an application, the ion temperature gradient (ITG) mode is simulated using the simplified gyrokinetic Vlasov-Poisson model. Our simulation and that using the ORB5 code for the DIII-D Cyclone case show reasonable agreement. As an additional application, ITG simulations using an ASDEX Upgrade equilibrium have been performed with density and temperature gradient profiles similar to the Cyclone case. Capabilities of the TRIMEG code for simulations with realistic experimental equilibria in the plasma core and in the whole plasma volume with open field lines are demonstrated.

A new diagnostic has been developed to investigate the wave-particle interaction in the phase-space in gyrokinetic particle-in-cell codes. Based on the projection of energy transfer terms onto the velocity space, the technique has been implemented and tested in the global code ORB5 and it gives an opportunity to localise velocity domains of maximum wave-plasma energy exchange for separate species. Moreover, contribution of different species and resonances can be estimated as well, by integrating the energy transfer terms in corresponding velocity domains. This Mode-Plasma-Resonance (MPR) diagnostic has been applied to study the dynamics of the Energetic-particle-induced Geodesic Acoustic Modes (EGAMs) in an ASDEX Upgrade shot, by analysing the influence of different species on the mode time evolution. Since the equations on which the diagnostic is based, are valid in both linear and nonlinear cases, this approach can be applied to study nonlinear plasma effects. As a possible future application, the technique can be used, for instance, to investigate the nonlinear EGAM frequency chirping, or the plasma heating due to the damping of the EGAMs.

The precise knowledge of the positions of space debris objects and in particular of defunct satellites is fundamental for satellite operations. Several studies showed that it is possible to improve the accuracy of the orbit determination results by fusing different types of observables, i.e. classical astrometric positions and range measurements. Particularly promising in the space debris field are the ranges provided by a satellite laser ranging system. The factors that limit the applicability of the satellite laser ranging (SLR) techniques are the altitude of the target, the accuracy of the predicted ephemeris of the target, the energy of the laser pulse, and the laser field of view. In this paper we will show a way to overcome the mentioned challenges by using a night-tracking camera for the real time correction of the pointing of the SLR system (active tracking), and for the simultaneous acquisition of measurements used to improve the orbits and to study the attitude of the target. After presenting the basic functionalities, the performance of the night-tracking camera, and the procedure to acquire the measurements, we will also show the potential of this tool to allow improving orbits in real-time. This study is carried out for defunct or recently decommissioned satellites. Only real angular/laser measurements provided by the sensors of the Swiss Optical Ground Station and Geodynamics Observatory Zimmerwald (SwissOGS) owned by the Astronomical Institute of the University of Bern (AIUB) are used.

The confinement of energetic particles (EP) is crucial for an efficient heating of tokamak plasmas. Plasma instabilities such as Alfven Eigenmodes (AE) can redistribute the EP population making the plasma heating less effective, and leading to additional loads on the walls. The nonlinear dynamics of toroidicity induced AE (TAE) is investigated by means of the global gyrokinetic particle-in-cell code ORB5, within the NEMORB project. The nonperturbative nonlinear interplay of TAEs and EP due to the wave-particle nonlinearity is studied. In particular, we focus on the nonlinear modification of the frequency, growth rate and radial structure of the TAE, depending on the evolution of the EP distribution in phase space. For the ITPA benchmark case, we find that the frequency increases when the growth rate decreases, and the mode shrinks radially. This nonlinear evolution is found to be correctly reproduced by means of a quasilinear model, namely a model where the linear effects of the nonlinearly modified EP distribution function are retained.

Alfvén eigenmodes (AEs) and energetic particle modes (EPMs) are often excited by energetic particles (EPs) in tokamak plasmas. One of the main open questions concerning EP driven instabilities is the non-linear evolution of the mode structure. The aim of the present paper is to investigate the properties of beta-induced AEs (BAEs) and EP driven geodesic acoustic modes (EGAMs) observed in the ramp-up phase of off-axis NBI heated ASDEX Upgrade (AUG) discharges. This paper focuses on the changes in the mode structure of BAEs/EGAMs during the non-linear chirping phase. Our investigation has shown that in case of the observed down-chirping BAEs the changes in the radial structure are smaller than the uncertainty of our measurement. This behaviour is most probably the consequence of that BAEs are normal modes, thus their radial structure strongly depends on the background plasma parameters rather than on the EP distribution. In the case of rapidly upward chirping EGAMs the analysis consistently shows shrinkage of the mode structure. The proposed explanation is that the resonance in the velocity space moves towards more passing particles which have narrower orbit widths.

This work presents the results of a multi mode ITER study on Toroidal Alfven Eigenmodes, using the nonlinear hybrid HAGIS-LIGKA model. It is found that main conclusions from earlier studies of ASDEX Upgrade discharges can be transferred to the ITER scenario: global, nonlinear effects are crucial for the evolution of the multi mode scenario. This work focuses on the ITER 15 MA baseline scenario with with a safety factor at the magnetic axis of $q_0 =$ 0.986. The least damped eigenmodes of the system are identified with the gyrokinetic, non-perturbative LIGKA solver, concerning mode structure, frequency and damping. Taking into account all weakly damped modes that can be identified linearly, nonlinear simulations with HAGIS reveal strong multi mode behavior: while in some parameter range, quasi-linear estimates turn out to be reasonable approximations for the nonlinearly relaxed energetic particle profile, under certain conditions low-n TAE branches can be excited. As a consequence, not only grow amplitudes of all modes to (up to orders of magnitude) higher values compared to the single mode cases but also, strong redistribution is triggered in the outer radial area between $ρ_\mathrm{pol} =$ 0.6 and 0.85, far above quasi-linear estimates.

The models of adiabatic vs trapped-kinetic- vs fully-kinetic-electrons and of electrostatic vs electromagnetic at very low beta are compared. Scalings of Alfven modes are also presented.

In many discharges at ASDEX Upgrade fast particle losses can be observed due to Alfvénic gap modes, Reversed Shear Alfvén Eigenmodes or core-localized Beta Alfvén Eigenmodes. For the first time, simulations of experimental conditions in the ASDEX Upgrade fusion device are performed for different plasma equilibria (particularly for different, also non-monotonic q profiles). The numerical tool is the extended version of the HAGIS code [Pinches'98, Brüdgam PhD Thesis, 2010], which also computes the particle motion in the vacuum region between vessel wall in addition to the internal plasma volume. For this work, a consistent fast particle distribution function was implemented to represent the strongly anisotropic fast particle population as generated by ICRH minority heating. Furthermore, HAGIS was extended to use more realistic eigenfunctions, calculated by the gyrokinetic eigenvalue solver LIGKA [Lauber'07]. The main aim of these simulations is to allow fast ion loss measurements to be interpreted with a theoretical basis. Fast particle losses are modeled and directly compared with experimental measurements [García-Muñoz'10]. The phase space distribution and the mode-correlation signature of the fast particle losses allows them to be characterized as prompt, resonant or diffusive (non-resonant). The experimental findings are reproduced numerically. It is found that a large number of diffuse losses occur in the lower energy range (at around 1/3 of the birth energy) particularly in multiple mode scenarios (with different mode frequencies), due to a phase space overlap of resonances leading to a so-called domino [Berk'95] transport process. In inverted q profile equilibria, the combination of radially extended global modes and large particle orbits leads to losses with energies down to 1/10th of the birth energy.

Remarkable progress has been made in diagnosing energetic particle instabilities on present-day machines and in establishing a theoretical framework for describing them. This overview describes the much improved diagnostics of Alfven instabilities and modelling tools developed world-wide, and discusses progress in interpreting the observed phenomena. A multi-machine comparison is presented giving information on the performance of both diagnostics and modelling tools for different plasma conditions outlining expectations for ITER based on our present knowledge.

Magnetohydrodynamic instabilities like Toroidal Alfvén Eigenmodes or core-localized modes such as Beta Induced Alfvén Eigenmodes and Reversed Shear Alfvén Eigenmodes driven by fast particles can lead to significant redistribution and losses in fusion devices. This is observed in many ASDEX Upgrade discharges. The present work aims to understand the underlying resonance mechanisms, especially in the presence of multiple modes with different frequencies. Resonant mode coupling mechanisms are investigated using the drift kinetic HAGIS code [Pinches 1998]. Simulations were performed for different plasma equilibria, in particular for different q profiles, employing the availability of improved experimental data. A study was carried out, investigating double-resonant mode coupling with respect to various overlapping scenarios. It was found that, depending on the radial mode distance, double-resonance is able to enhance growth rates as well as mode amplitudes significantly. Small radial mode distances, however can also lead to strong nonlinear mode stabilization of a linear dominant mode. With the extended version of HAGIS, losses were simulated and directly compared with experimental loss measurements. The losses' phase space distribution as well as their ejection signal is consistent with experimental data. Furthermore, it allowed to characterize them as prompt, resonant or stochastic. It was found that especially in multiple mode scenarios (with different mode frequencies), abundant incoherent losses occur in the lower energy range, due to a broad phase-space stochastization. The incoherent higher energetic losses are "prompt", i.e. their initial energy is too large for confined orbits.

In future fusion devices fast particles must be well confined in order to transfer their energy to the background plasma. Magnetohydrodynamic instabilities like Toroidal Alfvén Eigenmodes or core-localized modes such as Beta Induced Alfvén Eigenmodes and Reversed Shear Alfvén Eigenmodes, both driven by fast particles, can lead to significant losses. This is observed in many ASDEX Upgrade discharges. The present study applies the drift-kinetic HAGIS code with the aim of understanding the underlying resonance mechanisms, especially in the presence of multiple modes with different frequencies. Of particular interest is the resonant interaction of particles simultaneously with two different modes, referred to as 'double-resonance'. Various mode overlapping scenarios with different q profiles are considered. It is found that, depending on the radial mode distance, double-resonance is able to enhance growth rates as well as mode amplitudes significantly. Surprisingly, no radial mode overlap is necessary for this effect. Quite the contrary is found: small radial mode distances can lead to strong nonlinear mode stabilization of a linearly dominant mode.
