Holographic multiple-input multiple-output (HMIMO) utilizes a compact antenna array to form a nearly continuous aperture, thereby enhancing higher capacity and more flexible configurations compared with conventional MIMO systems, making it attractive in current scientific research. Key questions naturally arise regarding the potential of HMIMO to surpass Shannon's theoretical limits and how far its capabilities can be extended. However, the traditional Shannon information theory falls short in addressing these inquiries because it only focuses on the information itself while neglecting the underlying carrier, electromagnetic (EM) waves, and environmental interactions. To fill up the gap between the theoretical analysis and the practical application for HMIMO systems, we introduce electromagnetic information theory (EIT) in this paper. This paper begins by laying the foundation for HMIMO-oriented EIT, encompassing EM wave equations and communication regions. In the context of HMIMO systems, the resultant physical limitations are presented, involving Chu's limit, Harrington's limit, Hannan's limit, and the evaluation of coupling effects. Field sampling and HMIMO-assisted oversampling are also discussed to guide the optimal HMIMO design within the EIT framework. To comprehensively depict the EM-compliant propagation process, we present the approximate and exact channel modeling approaches in near-/far-field zones. Furthermore, we discuss both traditional Shannon's information theory, employing the probabilistic method, and Kolmogorov information theory, utilizing the functional analysis, for HMIMO-oriented EIT systems.

It is well known that there is inherent radiation pattern distortion for the commercial base station antenna array, which usually needs three antenna sectors to cover the whole space. To eliminate pattern distortion and further enhance beamforming performance, we propose an electromagnetic hybrid beamforming (EHB) scheme based on a three-dimensional (3D) superdirective holographic antenna array. Specifically, EHB consists of antenna excitation current vectors (analog beamforming) and digital precoding matrices, where the implementation of analog beamforming involves the real-time adjustment of the radiation pattern to adapt it to the dynamic wireless environment. Meanwhile, the digital beamforming is optimized based on the channel characteristics of analog beamforming to further improve the achievable rate of communication systems. An electromagnetic channel model incorporating array radiation patterns and the mutual coupling effect is also developed to evaluate the benefits of our proposed scheme. Simulation results demonstrate that our proposed EHB scheme with a 3D holographic array achieves a relatively flat superdirective beamforming gain and allows for programmable focusing directions throughout the entire spatial domain. Furthermore, they also verify that the proposed scheme achieves a sum rate gain of over 150% compared to traditional beamforming algorithms.

Pinpointing the origin of inefficiency can expedite the process of optimizing the efficiency of perovskite photovoltaics. However, it is challenging to discern and quantify the different loss pathways in a complete perovskite photovoltaic device under operational conditions. To address this challenge, we propose a modified diode model that can quantify bulk/interface defect-assisted recombination and series/shunt resistive losses. By adopting drift-diffusion simulation as the benchmark, we explore the physical meanings of the modified diode model parameters and evaluate the performance of the model for simulation parameters spanning many orders of magnitude. Our evaluation shows that, in most practical cases, the proposed model can accurately quantify all the aforementioned losses, and in some special cases, it is possible to identify the predominant loss pathway. Moreover, we apply the modified diode model to our lab-produced devices (based on Cs0.05FA0.95PbI3 perovskites), demonstrating its effectiveness in quantifying entangled losses in practice. Finally, we provide a set of guidelines for applying the modified diode model and interpreting the results. Source code available at https://github.com/WPT-Lab124/Modified-Diode-Model.

The performance of holographic multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) communications, employing two-dimensional (2-D) planar antenna arrays, is typically compromised by finite degrees-of-freedom (DOF) stemming from limited array size. The DOF constraint becomes significant when the element spacing approaches approximately half a wavelength, thereby restricting the overall performance of MIMO systems. To break this inherent limitation, we propose a novel three-dimensional (3-D) antenna array that strategically explores the untapped vertical dimension. We investigate the performance of MIMO systems utilizing 3-D arrays across different multi-path scenarios, encompassing Rayleigh channels with varying angular spreads and the 3rd generation partnership project (3GPP) channels. We subsequently showcase the advantages of these 3-D arrays over their 2-D counterparts with the same aperture sizes. As a proof of concept, a practical dipole-based 3-D array, facilitated by an electromagnetic band-gap (EBG) reflecting surface, is conceived, constructed, and evaluated. The experimental results align closely with full-wave simulations, and channel simulations substantiate that the DOF and capacity constraints of traditional holographic MIMO systems can be surpassed by adopting such a 3-D array configuration.

The construction of a large-scale quantum internet requires quantum repeaters containing multiple entangled photon sources with identical wavelengths. Semiconductor quantum dots can generate entangled photon pairs deterministically with high fidelity. However, realizing wavelength-matched quantum-dot entangled photon sources faces two difficulties: the non-uniformity of emission wavelength and exciton fine-structure splitting induced fidelity reduction. Typically, these two factors are not independently tunable, making it challenging to achieve simultaneous improvement. In this work, we demonstrate wavelength-tunable entangled photon sources based on droplet-etched GaAs quantum dots through the combined use of AC and quantum-confined Stark effects. The emission wavelength can be tuned by ~1 meV while preserving an entanglement fidelity f exceeding 0.955(1) in the entire tuning range. Based on this hybrid tuning scheme, we finally demonstrate multiple wavelength-matched entangled photon sources with f>0.919(3), paving a way towards robust and scalable on-demand entangled photon sources for quantum internet and integrated quantum optical circuits.

The holographic multiple-input-multiple-output (MIMO) communications refer to the MIMO systems built with ultra-dense antenna arrays, whose channel models and potential applications have attracted increasing attentions recently. When the spacing between adjacent array elements is larger than half wavelength, the effect of mutual coupling can generally be neglected in current antenna designs. However, in holographic MIMO communications, the influence of strong mutual coupling on antenna characteristics is inevitable, resulting in distorted radiation patterns and low radiation efficiencies. In this paper, starting from the analytical correlation and efficiency models, we investigate how the mutual coupling affects the capacity of a space-constrained MIMO system from the aspects of degree of freedom (DOF) and antenna efficiency. The involved fundamental concepts of correlation, DOF, efficiency and mutual coupling are crucial for both antenna and wireless-communication engineers when designing emerging MIMO communication systems.

This paper studies the exploitation of triple polarization (TP) for multi-user (MU) holographic multiple-input multiple-output surface (HMIMOS) wireless communication systems, aiming at capacity boosting without enlarging the antenna array size. We specifically consider that both the transmitter and receiver are equipped with an HMIMOS comprising compact sub-wavelength TP patch antennas. To characterize TP MUHMIMOS systems, a TP near-field channel model is proposed using the dyadic Green's function, whose characteristics are leveraged to design a user-cluster-based precoding scheme for mitigating the cross-polarization and inter-user interference contributions. A theoretical correlation analysis for HMIMOS with infinitely small patch antennas is also presented. According to the proposed scheme, the users are assigned to one of the three polarizations, which is easy to implement, at the cost, however, of reducing the system's diversity. Our numerical results showcase that the cross-polarization channel components have a nonnegligible impact on the system performance, which is efficiently eliminated with the proposed MU precoding scheme.

It is the pursuit of a multiple-input-multiple-output (MIMO) system to approach and even break the limit of channel capacity. However, it is always a big challenge to efficiently characterize the MIMO systems in complex space and get better propagation performance than the conventional MIMO systems considering only free space, which is important for guiding the power and phase allocation of antenna units. In this manuscript, an Electromagnetic-Information-Theory (EMIT) based model is developed for efficient characterization of MIMO systems in complex space. The group-T-matrix-based multiple scattering fast algorithm, the mode-decomposition-based characterization method, and their joint theoretical framework in complex space are discussed. Firstly, key informatics parameters in free electromagnetic space based on a dyadic Green's function are derived. Next, a novel group-T-matrix-based multiple scattering fast algorithm is developed to describe a representative inhomogeneous electromagnetic space. All the analytical results are validated by simulations. In addition, the complete form of the EMIT-based model is proposed to derive the informatics parameters frequently used in electromagnetic propagation, through integrating the mode analysis method with the dyadic Green's function matrix. Finally, as a proof-or-concept, microwave anechoic chamber measurements of a cylindrical array is performed, demonstrating the effectiveness of the EMIT-based model. Meanwhile, a case of image transmission with limited power is presented to illustrate how to use this EMIT-based model to guide the power and phase allocation of antenna units for real MIMO applications.

This paper investigates the utilization of triple polarization (TP) for multi-user (MU) holographic multiple-input multi-output surface (HMIMOS) wireless communication systems, targeting capacity boosting and diversity exploitation without enlarging the antenna array sizes. We specifically consider that both the transmitter and receiver are both equipped with an HMIMOS consisting of compact sub-wavelength TP patch antennas within the near-field (NF) regime. To characterize TP MU-HMIMOS systems, a TP NF channel model is constructed using the dyadic Green's function, whose characteristics are leveraged to design two precoding schemes for mitigating the cross-polarization and inter-user interference contributions. Specifically, a user-cluster-based precoding scheme assigns different users to one of three polarizations at the expense of the system's diversity, and a two-layer precoding scheme removes interference using the Gaussian elimination method at a high computational cost. The theoretical correlation analysis for HMIMOS in the NF region is also investigated, revealing that both the spacing of transmit patch antennas and user distance impact transmit correlation factors. Our numerical results show that the users far from transmitting HMIMOS experience higher correlation than those closer within the NF regime, resulting in a lower channel capacity. Meanwhile, in terms of channel capacity, TP HMIMOS can almost achieve 1.25 times gain compared with dual-polarized HMIMOS, and 3 times compared with conventional HMIMOS. In addition, the proposed two-layer precoding scheme combined with two-layer power allocation realizes a higher spectral efficiency than other schemes without sacrificing diversity.

Compared with a single-input-single-output (SISO) wireless communication system, the benefit of multiple-input-multiple-output (MIMO) technology originates from its extra degree of freedom (DOF), also referred as scattering channels or spatial electromagnetic (EM) modes, brought by spatial multiplexing. When the physical sizes of transmitting and receiving arrays are fixed, and there are sufficient antennas (typically with half-wavelength spacings), the DOF limit is only dependent on the propagating environment. Analytical methods can be used to estimate this limit in free space, and some approximate models are adopted in stochastic environments, such as Clarke's model and Ray-tracing methods. However, this DOF limit in an certain inhomogeneous environment has not been well discussed with rigorous full-wave numerical methods. In this work, volume integral equation (VIE) is implemented for investigating the limit of MIMO effective degree of freedom (EDOF) in three representative two-dimensional (2-D) inhomogeneous environments. Moreover, we clarify the relation between the performance of a MIMO system and the scattering characteristics of its propagating environment.

Topological photonic edge states are conventionally formed at the interface between two domains of topologically trivial and nontrivial photonic crystals. Recent works exploiting photonic quantum Hall and quantum valley Hall effects have shown that large-area topological waveguide states could be created in a three-layer topological heterostructure that consists of a finite-width domain featuring Dirac cone sandwiched between two domains of photonic crystals with opposite topological properties. In this work, we show that a new kind of large-area topological waveguide states could be created employing the photonic analogs of quantum spin Hall effect. Taking the well-used Wu-Hu model in topological photonics as an example, we show that sandwiching a finite-width domain of photonic crystals featuring double Dirac cone between two domains of expanded and shrunken unit cells could lead to the emergence of large-area topological helical waveguide states distributed uniformly in the middle domain. Importantly, we unveil a power-law scaling regarding to the size of the bandgap within which the large-area helical states reside as a function of the width of the middle domain, which implies that these large-area modes in principle could exist in the middle domain with arbitrary width. Moreover, pseudospin-momentum locking unidirectional propagations and robustness of these large-area waveguide modes against sharp bends are explicitly demonstrated. Our work enlarges the photonic systems and platforms that could be utilized for large-area-mode enabled topologically waveguiding.

The multi-user Holographic Multiple-Input and Multiple-Output Surface (MU-HMIMOS) paradigm, which is capable of realizing large continuous apertures with minimal power consumption and of shaping radio wave propagation at will, has been recently considered as an energy-efficient solution for future wireless networks. The tractable channel modeling of MU-HMIMOS signal propagation is one of the most critical challenges, mainly due to the coupling effect induced by the excessively large number of closely spaced patch antennas. In this paper, we focus on this challenge for downlink communications and model the electromagnetic channel in the wavenumber domain using the Fourier plane wave representation. Based on the proposed model, we devise a Zero-Forcing (ZF) precoding scheme, capitalizing on the sampled channel variance that depends on the number and spacing of the HMIMOS patch antennas, and perform a spectral efficiency analysis. Our simulation results showcase that the more patch antennas and the larger their spacing is, the performance of the considered MU-HMIMOS system improves. In addition, it is demonstrated that our theoretical performance expressions approximate sufficiently well the simulated spectral efficiency, even for the highly correlated cases, thus verifying the effectiveness and robustness of the presented analytical framework.

This article contains a digest of the theory of electromagnetism and a review of the transformation between inertial frames, especially under low speed limits. The covariant nature of the Maxwell's equations is explained using the conventional language. We show that even under low speed limits, the relativistic effects should not be neglected to get a self-consistent theory of the electromagnetic fields, unless the intrinsic dynamics of these fields has been omitted completely. The quasi-static limits, where the relativistic effects can be partly neglected are also reviewed, to clarify some common misunderstandings and imprecise use of the theory in presence of moving media and other related situations. The discussion presented in this paper provide a clear view of why classical electromagnetic theory is relativistic in its essence.

Effective degree of freedom (EDOF) of a multiple-input-multiple-output (MIMO) system represents its equivalent number of independent single-input-single-output (SISO) systems, which directly characterizes the communication performance. Traditional EDOF only considers single polarization, where the full polarized components degrade into two independent transverse components under the far-field approximation. However, the traditional model is not applicable to complex scenarios especially for the near-field region. Based on an electromagnetic (EM) channel model built from the dyadic Green's function, we first calculate the EM EDOF to estimate the performance of an arbitrary MIMO system with full polarizations in free space. Then, we clarify the relations between the limit of EDOF and the optimal number of sources/receivers. Finally, potential benefits of near-field MIMO communications are demonstrated with the EM EDOF, in which the contribution of the longitudinally polarized source is taken into account. This work establishes a fundamental EM framework for MIMO wireless communications.

The multi-user Holographic Multiple-Input and Multiple-Output Surface (MU-HMIMOS) paradigm, which is capable of realizing large continuous apertures with minimal power consumption, has been recently considered as an energyefficient solution for future wireless networks, offering increased flexibility in impacting electromagnetic (EM) wave propagation according to the desired communication, localization, and sensing objectives. The tractable channel modeling in MU-HMIMOS wireless systems is one of the most critical research challenges, mainly due to the coupling effect induced by the excessively large number of closely spaced patch antennas. In this paper, we focus on this challenge for the downlink of multi-user MIMO communications and extend an EM-compliant channel model to multiuser case, which is expressed in the wavenumber domain using the Fourier plane wave approximation. Based on the presented channel model, we investigate the spectral efficiency of maximumratio transmission and Zero-Forcing (ZF) precoding schemes. We also introduce a novel hardware efficient ZF precoder, leveraging Neumann series (NS) expansion to replace the required matrix inversion operation, which is very hard to be computed in the conventional way due to the extremely large number of patch antennas in the envisioned MU-HMIMOS communication systems. In comparison with the conventional independent and identical Rayleigh fading channels that ignore antenna coupling effects, the proposed EM-compliant channel model captures the mutual couplings induced by the very small antenna spacing. Our extensive performance evaluation results demonstrate that our theoretical performance expressions approximate sufficiently well ...

The effects of gain and loss on the band structures of a bulk topological dielectric photonic crystal (PC) with $C_{6v}$ symmetry and the PC-air-PC interface are studied based on first-principle calculation. To illustrate the importance of parity-time (PT) symmetry, three systems are considered, namely the PT-symmetric, PT-asymmetric, and lossy systems. We find that the system with gain and loss distributed in a PT symmetric manner exhibits a phase transition from a PT exact phase to a PT broken phase as the strength of the gain and loss increases, while for the PT-asymmetric and lossy systems, no such phase transition occurs. Furthermore, based on the Wilson loop calculation, the topology of the PT-symmetric system in the PT exact phase is demonstrated to keep unchanged as the Hermitian system. At last, different kinds of edge states in Hermitian systems under the influences of gain and loss are studied and we find that while the eigenfrequencies of nontrivial edge states become complex conjugate pairs, they keep real for the trivial defect states.

Establishing and approaching the fundamental limit of orbital angular momentum (OAM) multiplexing are necessary and increasingly urgent for current multiple-input multiple-output research. In this work, we elaborate the fundamental limit in terms of independent scattering channels (or degrees of freedom of scattered fields) through angular-spectral analysis, in conjunction with a rigorous Green function method. The scattering channel limit is universal for arbitrary spatial mode multiplexing, which is launched by a planar electromagnetic device, such as antenna, metasurface, etc, with a predefined physical size. As a proof of concept, we demonstrate both theoretically and experimentally the limit by a metasurface hologram that transforms orthogonal OAM modes to plane-wave modes scattered at critically separated angular-spectral regions. Particularly, a minimax optimization algorithm is applied to suppress angular spectrum aliasing, achieving good performances in both full-wave simulation and experimental measurement at microwave frequencies. This work offers a theoretical upper bound and corresponding approach route for engineering designs of OAM multiplexing.

Understanding and quantifying the main loss factors affecting the power conversion efficiency of perovskite solar cells are urgently needed. In this work, based on semiconductor physics, the expressions of bulk and surface recombination currents are analytically derived. Then taking the optical loss, series and shunt resistance losses, and bulk and surface recombination losses into consideration, an equivalent circuit model is proposed to describe the current density-voltage characteristics of practical perovskite solar cells. Furthermore, by comparing to the drift-diffusion model, the pre-defined physical parameters of the drift-diffusion model well agree with the fitting parameters retrieved by the equivalent circuit model, which verifies the reliability of the proposed model. Moreover, when the circuit model is applied to analyze experimental results, the fitting outcomes show favorable consistency to the physical investigations offered by the experiments. And the relative fitting errors of the above cases are all less than 2%. Through employing the model, the dominant recombination type is clearly identified and split current density-voltage curves characterizing different loss mechanisms are offered, which intuitively reveals the physical principles of efficiency loss. Additionally, through calculating the efficiency loss ratios under the open-circuit voltage condition, quantifying the above-mentioned loss mechanisms becomes simple and compelling. Consequently, this model offers a guideline to approach the efficiency limit from a circuit-level perspective. And the model is a comprehensive simulation and analysis tool for understanding the device physics of perovskite solar cells.

Spatial division multiplexing using conventional orbital angular momentum (OAM) has become a well-known physical layer transmission method over the past decade. The mode-group (MG) superposed by specific single mode plane spiral OAM (PSOAM) waves has been proved to be a flexible beamforming method to achieve the azimuthal pattern diversity, which inherits the spiral phase distribution of conventional OAM wave. Thus, it possesses both the beam directionality and vorticity. In this paper, it's the first time to show and verify novel PSOAM MG based multiple-in-multiple-out (MIMO) communication link (MG-MIMO) experimentally in a line-of-sight (LoS) scenario. A compact multi-mode PSOAM antenna is demonstrated experimentally to generate multiple independent controllable PSOAM waves, which can be used for constructing MGs. After several proof-of-principle tests, it has been verified that the beam directionality gain of MG can improve the receiving signal-to-noise (SNR) level in an actual system, meanwhile, the vorticity can provide another degree of freedom (DoF) to reduce the spatial correlation of MIMO system. Furthermore, a tentative long-distance transmission experiment operated at 10.2 GHz has been performed successfully at a distance of 50 m with a single-way spectrum efficiency of 3.7 bits/s/Hz/stream. The proposed MG-MIMO may have potential in the long-distance LoS back-haul scenario.

Vortex beams carrying orbital angular momentum (OAM) have been widely applied in various electromagnetic, optical, and quantum systems. A tailored OAM spectrum composed of several specific modes as expected holds a promise for expanding the degrees of freedom of the systems. However, such a broadband high-purity tailored spectrum is difficult to be achieved by the present devices, where the broadband amplitude manipulation has not been explored yet. In this work, inspired by the envelope-modulation theory, an elegant and universal way to manipulate the OAM spectrum in wide bandwidth is proposed by using a shape-tailored metasurface. Firstly, the rotating meta-atoms on a triangular lattice are proved to have smaller coupling distortion than that on a square lattice, and this behavior is critical for high-purity vortex spectrum generation by the Pancharatnam-Berry-based metasurfaces. Secondly, a universal modulation relation is established between the spatial arrangement of metasurfaces and the generated vortex beams. Finally, the broadband modulated OAM spectra and the comb-like OAM spectra are theoretically and experimentally demonstrated by the shape-tailored metasurfaces. The proposed amplitude-modulation scheme offers a novel concept and engineering route to manipulate the OAM spectrum in wide bandwidth, which could promote the development of OAM-based applications.

We demonstrate the coexistence of pseudospin- and valley-Hall-like edge states in a photonic crystal with $C_{3v}$ symmetry, which is composed of three interlacing triangular sublattices with the same lattice constants. By tuning the geometry of the sublattices, three complete photonic band gaps with nontrivial topology can be created, one of which is due to the band inversion associated with the pseudospin degree of freedom at the $Γ$ point and the other two due to the gapping out of Dirac cones associated with the valley degree of freedom at the $K, K'$ points. The system can support tri-band pseudospin- and valley-momentum locking edge states at properly designed domain-wall interfaces. Furthermore, to demonstrate the novel interplay of the two kinds of edge states in a single configuration, we design a four-channel system, where the unidirectional routing of electromagnetic waves against sharp bends between two routes can be selectively controlled by the pseudospin and valley degrees of freedom. Our work combines the pseudospin and valley degrees of freedom in a single configuration and may provide more flexibility in manipulating electromagnetic waves with promising potential for multiband and multifunctional applications.

Rapid progress in nonlinear plasmonic metasurfaces enabled many novel optical characteristics for metasurfaces, with potential applications in frequency metrology, timing characterization and quantum information. However, the spectrum of nonlinear optical response was typically based upon the linear optical resonance. In this work, a wavelength-multiplexed nonlinear plasmon-MoS2 hybrid metasurface with suppression phenomenon was proposed, where multiple nonlinear signals could to be simultaneously processed and optionally tuned. A clear physical picture to depict the nonlinear plasmonic bound states in the continuum (BICs) was presented, from the perspective of both classical and quantum approaches. Particularly, beyond the ordinary plasmon-polariton effect, we numerically demonstrated a giant BIC-inspired second-order nonlinear susceptibility $10^{-5}$~$m/V$ of MoS2 in the infrared band. The novelty in our study lies in the presence of a quantum oscillator that can be adopted to both suppress and enhance the nonlinear quasi BICs. This selectable nonlinear BIC-based suppression and enhancement effect can optionally block undesired modes, resulting in narrower linewidth as well as smaller quantum decay rates, which is also promising in slow-light-associated technologies.

Nonlinear topological photonics, which explores topics common to the fields of topological phases and nonlinear optics, is expected to open up a new paradigm in topological photonics. Here, we demonstrate second-harmonic generation (SHG) via nonlinear interaction of double topological valley-Hall kink modes in all-dielectric photonic crystals (PhCs). We first show that two topological frequency bandgaps can be created around a pair of frequencies, $ω_0$ and $2ω_0$, by gapping out the corresponding Dirac points in two-dimensional honeycomb PhCs. Valley-Hall kink modes along a kink-type domain wall interface between two PhCs placed together in a mirror-symmetric manner are generated within the two frequency bandgaps. Importantly, through full-wave simulations and mode dispersion analysis, we demonstrate that tunable, bi-directional phase-matched SHG via nonlinear interaction of the valley-Hall kink modes inside the two bandgaps can be achieved. In particular, by using Stokes parameters associated to the magnetic part of the valley-Hall kink modes, we introduce a new concept, SHG directional dichroism, which is employed to characterize optical probes for sensing chiral molecules. Our work opens up new avenues towards topologically protected nonlinear frequency mixing and active photonic devices implemented in all-dielectric material platforms.

Chiral surface states along the zigzag edge of a valley photonic crystal in the honeycomb lattice are demonstrated. By decomposing the local fields into orbital angular momentum (OAM) modes, we find that the chiral surface states present OAM-dependent unidirectional propagation characteristics. Particularly, the propagation directivities of the surface states are quantified by the local OAM decomposition and are found to depend on the chiralities of both the source and surface states. These findings allow for the engineering control of the unidirectional propagation of electromagnetic energy without requiring an ancillary cladding layer. Furthermore, we examine the propagation of the chiral surface states against sharp bends. It turns out that although only certain states successfully pass through the bend, the unidirectional propagation is well maintained due to the topology of the structure.

As an important figure of merit for characterizing the quantized collective behaviors of the wavefunction, Chern number is the topological invariant of quantum Hall insulators. Chern number also identifies the topological properties of the photonic topological insulators (PTIs), thus it is of crucial importance in PTI design. In this paper, we develop a first principle computatioal method for the Chern number of 2D gyrotropic photonic crystals (PCs), starting from the Maxwell's equations. Firstly, we solve the Hermitian generalized eigenvalue equation reformulated from the Maxwell's equations by using the full-wave finite-difference frequency-domain (FDFD) method. Then the Chern number is obtained by calculating the integral of Berry curvature over the first Brillouin zone. Numerical examples of both transverse-electric (TE) and transverse-magnetic (TM) modes are demonstrated, where convergent Chern numbers can be obtained using rather coarse grids, thus validating the efficiency and accuracy of the proposed method.

An equivalent circuit model combined with broadband phase shift network is developed to effectively design the meta-atoms in metasurface. In this work, we propose a topological electromagnetic system based on a line defect in topologically nontrivial photonic crystals (PCs). With a finite-difference supercell approach, modal analysis of the PCs structure is investigated in detail. The topological line-defect states are pseudospin polarized and their energy flow directions are determined by the corresponding pseudospin helicities. These states can be excited by using two spatially-symmetric line-source arrays carrying orbital angular momenta. The feature of the unidirectional propagation is demonstrated and it is stable when disorders are introduced to the PCs structure.

A novel symplectic algorithm is proposed to solve the Maxwell-Schrödinger (M-S) system for investigating light-matter interaction. Using the fourth-order symplectic integration and fourth-order collocated differences, Maxwell-Schrödinger equations are discretized in temporal and spatial domains, respectively. The symplectic finite-difference time-domain (SFDTD) algorithm is developed for accurate and efficient study of coherent interaction between electromagnetic fields and artificial atoms. Particularly, the Dirichlet boundary condition is adopted for modeling the Rabi oscillation problems under the semi-classical framework. To implement the Dirichlet boundary condition, image theory is introduced, tailored to the high-order collocated differences. For validating the proposed SFDTD algorithm, three-dimensional numerical studies of the population inversion in the Rabi oscillation are presented. Numerical results show that the proposed high-order SFDTD(4,4) algorithm exhibits better numerical performance than the conventional FDTD(2,2) approach at the aspects of accuracy and efficiency for the long-term simulation. The proposed algorithm opens up a promising way towards a high-accurate energy-conservation modeling and simulation of complex dynamics in nanoscale light-matter interaction.

The metasurfaces reflect the incident left circularly polarized (LCP)/right circularly polarized (RCP) plane wave to RCP/LCP vortex beams carrying OAM at normal or oblique direction. Unlike conventional metasurfaces that are composed of discrete scatterers, the scatterers on the proposed metasurface form a quasi-continuous pattern. The patterning of the metasurface is calculated through grating vectors, and no optimization of single scatterer is required. Plasmonic metamaterials and metasurfaces offer new opportunities in developing high performance terahertz emitters and detectors beyond the limitations of conventional nonlinear materials. However, simple meta-atoms for second-order nonlinear applications encounter fundamental trade-offs in the necessary symmetry breaking and local-field enhancement due to radiation damping that is inherent to the operating resonant mode and cannot be controlled separately. Here we present a novel concept that eliminates this restriction obstructing the improvement of terahertz generation efficiency in nonlinear metasurfaces based on metallic nanoresonators. This is achieved by combining a resonant dark-state metasurface, which locally drives nonlinear nanoresonators in the near field, with a specific spatial symmetry that enables destructive interference of the radiating linear moments of the nanoresonators, and perfect absorption via simultaneous electric and magnetic critical coupling of the pump radiation to the dark mode. Our proposal allows eliminating linear radiation damping, while maintaining constructive interference and effective radiation of the nonlinear components. We numerically demonstrate a giant second-order nonlinear susceptibility around Hundred-Billionth m/V, a one order improvement compared with the previously reported split-ring-resonator metasurface, and correspondingly, a 2 orders of magnitude enhanced terahertz energy extraction should be expected with our configuration under the same conditions. Graphene is an ideal 2D material system bridging electronic and photonic devices. It also breaks the fundamental speed and size limits by electronics and photonics, respectively. Graphene offers multiple functions of signal transmission, emission, modulation, and detection in a broad band, high speed, compact size, and low loss. Here, we have a brief view of graphene based functional devices at microwave, terahertz, and optical frequencies. Their fundamental physics and computational models were discussed as well.

Metallic nanoparticles (NPs) support localized surface plasmon resonances (LSPRs), which enable to concentrate sunlight at the active layer of solar cells. However, full-wave modeling of the plasmonic solar cells faces great challenges in terms of huge computational workload and bad matrix condition. It is tremendously difficult to accurately and efficiently simulate near-field multiple scattering effects from plasmonic NPs embedded into solar cells. In this work, a preconditioned volume integral equation (VIE) is proposed to model plasmonic organic solar cells (OSCs). The diagonal block preconditioner is applied to different material domains of the device structure. As a result, better convergence and higher computing efficiency are achieved. Moreover, the calculation is further accelerated by two-dimensional periodic Green's functions. Using the proposed method, the dependences of optical absorption on the wavelengths and incident angles are investigated. Angular responses of the plasmonic OSCs show the super-Lambertian absorption on the plasmon resonance but near-Lambertian absorption off the plasmon resonance. The volumetric method of moments and explored physical understanding are of great help to investigate the optical responses of OSCs.

As an attractive degree of freedom in electromagnetic (EM) waves, the orbital angular momentum (OAM) enables infinite communication channels for both classical and quantum communications. The exploration of OAM generation inspires various designs involving spiral phase plates, antenna arrays, metasurfaces, and computer-generated holograms. In this work, we theoretically and experimentally demonstrate an approach to producing OAM carrying EM waves by a point defect in three-dimensional (3D) photonic crystals (PCs). Simultaneous excitation of two vibrational-defect states with an elaborately engineered phase retardation generates a rotational state carrying OAM. Through converting guided waves in a line defect to localized waves in a point defect and then to radiated vortex waves in free space, the lowest four OAM-mode emitters, i.e., OAM indices of 1, -1, 2, and -2, are successfully realized. This work offers a physical mechanism to generate OAM by PCs, especially when the OAM generation is to be integrated with other designs.

Here we study terahertz generation from nonlinear metasurface consisting of single layer nanoscale split-ring resonator array. The terahertz generation due to optical rectification by the second-order nonlinearity of the split-ring resonator is investigated by a time-domain implementation of the hydrodynamic model for electron dynamics in metal. The results show that the nonlinear metasurface enables us to generate broadband terahertz radiation and free from quasi-phase-matching conditions. The proposed scheme provides a new concept of broadband THz source and designing nonlinear plasmonic metamaterials.

A symplectic pseudospectral time-domain (SPSTD) scheme is developed to solve Schrodinger equation. Instead of spatial finite differences in conventional finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) method, the fast Fourier transform is used to calculate the spatial derivatives. In time domain, the scheme adopts high-order symplectic integrators to simulate time evolution of Schrodinger equation. A detailed numerical study on the eigenvalue problems of 1D quantum well and 3D harmonic oscillator is carried out. The simulation results strongly confirm the advantages of the SPSTD scheme over the traditional PSTD method and FDTD approach. Furthermore, by comparing to the traditional PSTD method and the non-symplectic Runge-Kutta (RK) method, the explicit SPSTD scheme which is an infinite order of accuracy in space domain and energy-conserving in time domain, is well suited for a long-term simulation.

Charge carrier recombination in the perovskite solar cells (PSCs) has a deep influence on the electrical performance, such as open circuit voltage, short circuit current, fill factor and ultimately power conversion efficiency. The impacts of injection barrier, recombination channels, doping properties of carrier transport layers and light intensity on the performance of PSCs are theoretically investigated by drift-diffusion model in this work. The results indicate that due to the injection barrier at the interfaces of perovskite and carrier transport layer, the accumulated carriers modify the electric field distribution throughout the PSCs. Thus, a zero electric field is generated at a specific applied voltage, with greatly increases the interfacial recombination, resulting in a local kink of current density-voltage (J-V) curve. This work provides an effective strategy to improve the efficiency of PSCs by pertinently reducing both the injection barrier and interfacial recombination.

The unique gate-voltage dependent optical properties of graphene make it a promising electrically-tunable plasmonic material. In this work, we proposed in-situ control of the polarization of nanoantennas by combining plasmonic structures with an electrostatically tunable graphene monolayer. The tunable polarizer is designed based on an asymmetric cross nanoantenna comprising two orthogonal metallic dipoles sharing the same feed gap. Graphene monolayer is deposited on a Si/SiO2 substrate, and inserted beneath the nanoantenna. Our modelling demonstrates that as the chemical potential is incremented up to 1 eV by electrostatic doping, resonant wavelength for the longer graphene-loaded dipole is blue shifted for 500 nm (~ 10% of the resonance) in the mid-infrared range, whereas the shorter dipole experiences much smaller influences due to the unique wavelength-dependent optical properties of graphene. In this way, the relative field amplitude and phase between the two dipole nanoantennas are electrically adjusted, and the polarization state of the reflected wave can be electrically tuned from the circular into near-linear states with the axial ratio changing over 8 dB. Our study thus confirms the strong light-graphene interaction with metallic nanostructures, and illuminates promises for high-speed electrically controllable optoelectronic devices.

A modified detailed balance model is built to understand and quantify efficiency loss of perovskite solar cells. The modified model captures the light-absorption dependent short-circuit current, contact and transport-layer modified carrier transport, as well as recombination and photon-recycling influenced open-circuit voltage. Our theoretical and experimental results show that for experimentally optimized perovskite solar cells with the power conversion efficiency of 19%, optical loss of 25%, non-radiative recombination loss of 35%, and ohmic loss of 35% are the three dominant loss factors for approaching the 31% efficiency limit of perovskite solar cells. We also find that the optical loss will climb up to 40% for a thin-active-layer design. Moreover, a misconfigured transport layer will introduce above 15% of energy loss. Finally, the perovskite-interface induced surface recombination, ohmic loss, and current leakage should be further reduced to upgrade device efficiency and eliminate hysteresis effect. The work contributes to fundamental understanding of device physics of perovskite solar cells. The developed model offers a systematic design and analysis tool to photovoltaic science and technology.

An orbital angular momentum (OAM) detection approach at microwave band is proposed. A transmittance function is exploited to model a transmissive metasurface. Then the metasurface is designed to convert an OAM wave to multiple waves, only one of which is gaussian. The radiation direction of the gaussian wave is distinguishable according to the order of incident OAM. Consequently, by locating the gaussian wave, the incident OAM can be conveniently determined. We use a simple field source to simulate the incident OAM wave in fullwave simulation. It largely simplifies the simulation process when an incident wave carrying OAM is needed. Both numerical and full-wave simulation results are provided to validate our design and they show a good agreement with each other. Then, the metasurface is optimized for high directivity. Our work can provide an efficient and effective way for OAM detection in radio communications.
