Current-driven dynamics of spin textures plays a pivotal role in potential applications for electronic devices. While two-dimensional magnetic skyrmions with topologically nontrivial spin textures have garnered significant interest, their practical use is hindered by the skyrmion Hall effect $\unicode{x2014}$ a transverse motion to the current direction that occurs as a counteraction to the topological Hall effect of electrons by an emergent magnetic field arising from the Berry phase effect. Here, we explore current-driven dynamics of three-dimensional topological spin textures known as magnetic torons, composed of layered skyrmions with two singularities called Bloch points at their ends. Through extensive numerical simulations, we show that the torons also exhibit a Hall motion, but surprisingly over a wide range spanning from the zero Hall effect, a purely longitudinal motion, to the perfect Hall effect, a purely transverse motion accompanied by no longitudinal motion. Such flexible and controllable behaviors stem from anisotropic potential barriers on the discrete lattice, which can be particularly relevant for nanoscale torons recently discovered. Our results not only provide an experimental method to probe topology of three-dimensional magnetic textures but also pave the way for future developments in topological spintronics beyond the realm of skyrmions.

Additionally, the $SU(2)$ Wess-Zumino-Witten model is believed to be equivalent to the $O(3)$ nonlinear sigma model with the theta term. In this work, we reexamine this duality through the lens of renormalization group (RG) flow. We analyze the RG flow structure of the $O(3)$ nonlinear sigma model with the theta term in two dimensions using the functional renormalization group. Our results reveal a nontrivial fixed point with a nonzero value of the topological coupling. The scaling dimensions (critical exponents) at this fixed point suggest the realization of duality between the $O(3)$ nonlinear sigma model with the theta term and the free fermion theory, indicating that these models belong to the same universality class.

The radioisotope Th-229 is renowned for its extraordinarily low-energy, long-lived nuclear first-excited state. This isomeric state can be excited by VUV lasers and the transition from the ground state has been proposed as a reference transition for ultra-precise nuclear clocks. Such nuclear clocks will find multiple applications, ranging from fundamental physics studies to practical implementations. Recent investigations extracted valuable constraints on the nuclear transition energy and lifetime, populating the isomer in stochastic nuclear decay of U-233 or Ac-229.
However, to assess the feasibility and performance of the (solid-state) nuclear clock concept, time-controlled excitation and depopulation of the $^{229}$Th isomer together with time-resolved monitoring of the radiative decay are imperative.
Here we report the population of the $^{229}$Th isomeric state through resonant X-ray pumping and detection of the radiative decay in a VUV transparent $^{229}$Th-doped CaF$_2$ crystal. The decay half-life is measured to $447\pm 25$ s, with a transition wavelength of $148.18 \pm 0.42$ nm and a radiative decay fraction consistent with unity. Furthermore, we report a new ``X-ray quenching'' effect which allows to de-populate the isomer on demand and effectively reduce the half-life by at least a factor 50. Such controlled quenching can be used to significantly speed up the interrogation cycle in future nuclear clock schemes.
Our results show that full control over the $^{229}$Th nuclear isomer population can be achieved in a crystal environment. In particular, non-radiative decay processes that might lead to a broadening of the isomer transition linewidth are negligible, paving the way for the development of a compact and robust solid-state nuclear clock. Further studies are needed to reveal the underlying physical mechanism of the X-ray quenching effect.

This paper discusses the revenue management (RM) problem to maximize revenue by pricing items or services. One challenge in this problem is that the demand distribution is unknown and varies over time in real applications such as airline and retail industries. In particular, the time-varying demand has not been well studied under scenarios of unknown demand due to the difficulty of jointly managing the remaining inventory and estimating the demand. To tackle this challenge, we first introduce an episodic generalization of the RM problem motivated by typical application scenarios. We then propose a computationally efficient algorithm based on posterior sampling, which effectively optimizes prices by solving linear programming. We derive a Bayesian regret upper bound of this algorithm for general models where demand parameters can be correlated between time periods, while also deriving a regret lower bound for generic algorithms. Our empirical study shows that the proposed algorithm performs better than other benchmark algorithms and comparably to the optimal policy in hindsight. We also propose a heuristic modification of the proposed algorithm, which further efficiently learns the pricing policy in the experiments.

Preceding a core-collapse supernova, various processes produce an increasing amount of neutrinos of all flavors characterized by mounting energies from the interior of massive stars. Among them, the electron antineutrinos are potentially detectable by terrestrial neutrino experiments such as KamLAND and Super-Kamiokande via inverse beta decay interactions. Once these pre-supernova neutrinos are observed, an early warning of the upcoming core-collapse supernova can be provided. In light of this, KamLAND and Super-Kamiokande, both located in the Kamioka mine in Japan, have been monitoring pre-supernova neutrinos since 2015 and 2021, respectively. Recently, we performed a joint study between KamLAND and Super-Kamiokande on pre-supernova neutrino detection. A pre-supernova alert system combining the KamLAND detector and the Super-Kamiokande detector was developed and put into operation, which can provide a supernova alert to the astrophysics community. Fully leveraging the complementary properties of these two detectors, the combined alert is expected to resolve a pre-supernova neutrino signal from a 15 M$_{\odot}$ star within 510 pc of the Earth, at a significance level corresponding to a false alarm rate of no more than 1 per century. For a Betelgeuse-like model with optimistic parameters, it can provide early warnings up to 12 hours in advance.

Neutrinos from very nearby supernovae, such as Betelgeuse, are expected to generate more than ten million events over 10\,s in Super-Kamokande (SK). At such large event rates, the buffers of the SK analog-to-digital conversion board (QBEE) will overflow, causing random loss of data that is critical for understanding the dynamics of the supernova explosion mechanism. In order to solve this problem, two new DAQ modules were developed to aid in the observation of very nearby supernovae. The first of these, the SN module, is designed to save only the number of hit PMTs during a supernova burst and the second, the Veto module, prescales the high rate neutrino events to prevent the QBEE from overflowing based on information from the SN module. In the event of a very nearby supernova, these modules allow SK to reconstruct the time evolution of the neutrino event rate from beginning to end using both QBEE and SN module data. This paper presents the development and testing of these modules together with an analysis of supernova-like data generated with a flashing laser diode. We demonstrate that the Veto module successfully prevents DAQ overflows for Betelgeuse-like supernovae as well as the long-term stability of the new modules. During normal running the Veto module is found to issue DAQ vetos a few times per month resulting in a total dead time less than 1\,ms, and does not influence ordinary operations. Additionally, using simulation data we find that supernovae closer than 800~pc will trigger Veto module resulting in a prescaling of the observed neutrino data.

We present the results of the charge ratio ($R$) and polarization ($P^μ_{0}$) measurements using the decay electron events collected from 2008 September to 2022 June by the Super-Kamiokande detector. Because of its underground location and long operation, we performed high precision measurements by accumulating cosmic-ray muons. We measured the muon charge ratio to be $R=1.32 \pm 0.02$ $(\mathrm{stat.}{+}\mathrm{syst.})$ at $E_μ\cos θ_{\mathrm{Zenith}}=0.7^{+0.3}_{-0.2}$ $\mathrm{TeV}$, where $E_μ$ is the muon energy and $θ_{\mathrm{Zenith}}$ is the zenith angle of incoming cosmic-ray muons. This result is consistent with the Honda flux model while this suggests a tension with the $πK$ model of $1.9σ$. We also measured the muon polarization at the production location to be $P^μ_{0}=0.52 \pm 0.02$ $(\mathrm{stat.}{+}\mathrm{syst.})$ at the muon momentum of $0.9^{+0.6}_{-0.1}$ $\mathrm{TeV}/c$ at the surface of the mountain; this also suggests a tension with the Honda flux model of $1.5σ$. This is the most precise measurement ever to experimentally determine the cosmic-ray muon polarization near $1~\mathrm{TeV}/c$. These measurement results are useful to improve the atmospheric neutrino simulations.

As the amount of loaded $\rm Gd_2(\rm SO_4)_3\cdot \rm 8H_2O$ was doubled compared to the first loading, the capacity of the powder dissolving system was doubled. We also developed new batches of gadolinium sulfate with even further reduced radioactive impurities. In addition, a more efficient screening method was devised and implemented to evaluate these new batches of $\rm Gd_2(\rm SO_4)_3\cdot \rm 8H_2O$. Following the second loading, the Gd concentration in SK was measured to be $333.5\pm2.5$ ppm via an Atomic Absorption Spectrometer (AAS). From the mean neutron capture time constant of neutrons from an Am/Be calibration source, the Gd concentration was independently measured to be 332.7 $\pm$ 6.8(sys.) $\pm$ 1.1(stat.) ppm, consistent with the AAS result. Furthermore, during the loading the Gd concentration was monitored continually using the capture time constant of each spallation neutron produced by cosmic-ray muons, and the final neutron capture efficiency was shown to become 1.5 times higher than that of the first loaded phase, as expected.

Among multi-messenger observations of the next galactic core-collapse supernova, Super-Kamiokande (SK) plays a critical role in detecting the emitted supernova neutrinos, determining the direction to the supernova (SN), and notifying the astronomical community of these observations in advance of the optical signal. On 2022, SK has increased the gadolinium dissolved in its water target (SK-Gd) and has achieved a Gd concentration of 0.033%, resulting in enhanced neutron detection capability, which in turn enables more accurate determination of the supernova direction. Accordingly, SK-Gd's real-time supernova monitoring system (Abe te al. 2016b) has been upgraded. SK_SN Notice, a warning system that works together with this monitoring system, was released on December 13, 2021, and is available through GCN Notices (Barthelmy et al. 2000). When the monitoring system detects an SN-like burst of events, SK_SN Notice will automatically distribute an alarm with the reconstructed direction to the supernova candidate within a few minutes. In this paper, we present a systematic study of SK-Gd's response to a simulated galactic SN. Assuming a supernova situated at 10 kpc, neutrino fluxes from six supernova models are used to characterize SK-Gd's pointing accuracy using the same tools as the online monitoring system. The pointing accuracy is found to vary from 3-7$^\circ$ depending on the models. However, if the supernova is closer than 10 kpc, SK_SN Notice can issue an alarm with three-degree accuracy, which will benefit follow-up observations by optical telescopes with large fields of view.

The realization of single-photon generation is important for implementing various quantum information technologies. The use of rare-earth ions in an optical fiber is a promising single photon generation method due to its ability to operate at room temperature as well as the low cost involved. Neodymium ions are especially interesting because the ions are one of the most commercially affordable rare-earth materials in the current industry. The neodymium ion also has the advantage of having a rich energy level structure, which offers several possible wavelengths for emitted single photons from visible to near-telecommunication wavelengths. In this paper, we experimentally demonstrated single-photon generation using an isolated single neodymium ion in tapered silica fiber at room temperature. Our results have significant implications as a platform for low-cost wavelength-selectable single-photon sources and photonic quantum applications.

Defects influence diverse properties of materials, shaping their structural, mechanical, and electronic characteristics. Among a variety of materials exhibiting unique defects, magnets exhibit diverse nano- to micro-scale defects and have been intensively studied in materials science. Specifically, defects in magnetic labyrinthine patterns, called junctions and terminals, serve as the canonical targets of the research. While detecting and characterizing such defects is crucial for understanding magnets, systematically investigating large-scale images containing over a thousand closely packed junctions and terminals remains a formidable challenge. This study introduces a new technique called TM-CNN (Template Matching - Convolutional Neural Network) designed to detect a multitude of small objects in images, such as the defects in magnetic labyrinthine patterns. TM-CNN was used to identify 641,649 such structures in 444 experimental images, and the results were explored to deepen understanding of magnetic materials. It employs a two-stage detection approach combining template matching, used in initial detection, with a convolutional neural network, used to eliminate incorrect identifications. To train a CNN classifier, it is necessary to annotate a large number of training images. This difficulty prevents the use of CNN in many practical applications. TM-CNN significantly reduces the manual workload for creating training images by automatically making most of the annotations and leaving only a small number of corrections to human reviewers. In testing, TM-CNN achieved an impressive F1 score of 0.991, far outperforming traditional template matching and CNN-based object detection algorithms.

In addition, we synthesized two crystal modifications of RbH$_{9-x}$ with pseudo hexagonal and pseudo tetragonal structures identified by synchrotron X-ray diffraction and Raman measurements. Both phases are stable at 8-10 GPa. This is an unprecedented low stabilization pressure for polyhydrides. These discoveries open up possibilities for modifying existing hydrogen storage materials to increase their efficiency.

An analysis of solar neutrino data from the fourth phase of Super-Kamiokande~(SK-IV) from October 2008 to May 2018 is performed and the results are presented. The observation time of the data set of SK-IV corresponds to $2970$~days and the total live time for all four phases is $5805$~days. For more precise solar neutrino measurements, several improvements are applied in this analysis: lowering the data acquisition threshold in May 2015, further reduction of the spallation background using neutron clustering events, precise energy reconstruction considering the time variation of the PMT gain. The observed number of solar neutrino events in $3.49$--$19.49$ MeV electron kinetic energy region during SK-IV is $65,443^{+390}_{-388}\,(\mathrm{stat.})\pm 925\,(\mathrm{syst.})$ events. Corresponding $\mathrm{^{8}B}$ solar neutrino flux is $(2.314 \pm 0.014\, \rm{(stat.)} \pm 0.040 \, \rm{(syst.)}) \times 10^{6}~\mathrm{cm^{-2}\,s^{-1}}$, assuming a pure electron-neutrino flavor component without neutrino oscillations. The flux combined with all SK phases up to SK-IV is $(2.336 \pm 0.011\, \rm{(stat.)} \pm 0.043 \, \rm{(syst.)}) \times 10^{6}~\mathrm{cm^{-2}\,s^{-1}}$. Based on the neutrino oscillation analysis from all solar experiments, including the SK $5805$~days data set, the best-fit neutrino oscillation parameters are $\rm{sin^{2} θ_{12,\,solar}} = 0.306 \pm 0.013 $ and $Δm^{2}_{21,\,\mathrm{solar}} = (6.10^{+ 0.95}_{-0.81}) \times 10^{-5}~\rm{eV}^{2}$, with a deviation of about 1.5$σ$ from the $Δm^{2}_{21}$ parameter obtained by KamLAND. The best-fit neutrino oscillation parameters obtained from all solar experiments and KamLAND are $\sin^{2} θ_{12,\,\mathrm{global}} = 0.307 \pm 0.012 $ and $Δm^{2}_{21,\,\mathrm{global}} = (7.50^{+ 0.19}_{-0.18}) \times 10^{-5}~\rm{eV}^{2}$.

Understanding the atomistic mechanism of ion conduction in solid electrolytes is critical for the advancement of all-solid-state batteries. Glass-ceramics, which undergo crystallization from a glass state, frequently exhibit unique properties including enhanced ionic conductivities compared to both the original crystalline and glass forms. Despite these distinctive features, specific details regarding the behavior of ion conduction in glass-ceramics, particularly concerning conduction pathways, remain elusive. In this study, we demonstrate the crystallization process of glass-Li$_3$PS$_4$ through molecular dynamics simulations employing machine learning interatomic potentials constructed from first principles calculation data. Our analyses of Li conduction using the obtained partially crystallized structures reveal that the diffusion barriers of Li decrease as the crystallinity in Li$_3$PS$_4$ glass-ceramics increases. Furthermore, Li displacements predominantly occur in the precipitated crystalline portion, suggesting that percolation conduction plays a significant role in enhanced Li conduction. These findings provide valuable insights for the future utilization of glass-ceramic materials.

We present a comprehensive approach to characterizing labyrinthine structures that often emerge as a final steady state in pattern forming systems. We employ machine learning based pattern recognition techniques to identify the types and locations of topological defects of the local stripe ordering to augment conventional Fourier analysis. A pair distribution function analysis of the topological defects reveals subtle differences between labyrinthine structures which are beyond the conventional characterization methods. We utilize our approach to highlight a clear morphological transition between two zero-field labyrinthine structures in single crystal Bi substituted Yttrium Iron Garnet films. An energy landscape picture is proposed to understand the athermal dynamics that governs the observed morphological transition. Our work demonstrates that machine learning based recognition techniques enable novel studies of rich and complex labyrinthine type structures universal to many pattern formation systems.

We report the first measurement of the atmospheric neutrino-oxygen neutral-current quasielastic (NCQE) cross section in the gadolinium-loaded Super-Kamiokande (SK) water Cherenkov detector. In June 2020, SK began a new experimental phase, named SK-Gd, by loading 0.011% by mass of gadolinium into the ultrapure water of the SK detector. The introduction of gadolinium to ultrapure water has the effect of improving the neutron-tagging efficiency. Using a 552.2 day data set from August 2020 to June 2022, we measure the NCQE cross section to be 0.74 $\pm$ 0.22(stat.) $^{+0.85}_{-0.15}$ (syst.) $\times$ 10$^{-38}$ cm$^{2}$/oxygen in the energy range from 160 MeV to 10 GeV, which is consistent with the atmospheric neutrino-flux-averaged theoretical NCQE cross section and the measurement in the SK pure-water phase within the uncertainties. Furthermore, we compare the models of the nucleon-nucleus interactions in water and find that the Binary Cascade model and the Liege Intranuclear Cascade model provide a somewhat better fit to the observed data than the Bertini Cascade model. Since the atmospheric neutrino-oxygen NCQE reactions are one of the main backgrounds in the search for diffuse supernova neutrino background (DSNB), these new results will contribute to future studies - and the potential discovery - of the DSNB in SK.

Super-Kamiokande measured the precise time of each solar neutrino interaction over 22 calendar years to search for solar neutrino flux modulations with unprecedented precision. Periodic modulations are searched for in a dataset comprising five-day interval solar neutrino flux measurements with a maximum likelihood method. We also applied the Lomb-Scargle method to this dataset to compare it with previous reports. The only significant modulation found is due to the elliptic orbit of the Earth around the Sun. The observed modulation is consistent with astronomical data: we measured an eccentricity of (1.53$\pm$0.35)\%, and a perihelion shift of ($-$1.5$\pm$13.5) days.

Rare-earth (RE) atoms in solid-state materials are attractive components for photonic quantum information systems because of their coherence properties even in high-temperature environments. We have experimentally performed the single-site optical spectroscopy and optical addressing of a single RE atom in an amorphous silica optical fiber at room temperature. The single-site optical spectroscopy of the tapered RE-doped fiber shows nonresonant emission lines similar to those seen in the case of an unstructured fiber and the autocorrelation function of photons emitted from the fiber shows the antibunching effect due to the spatial isolation given by the tapered fiber structure. The ability to address single RE atoms at room temperature provides a very stable and cost-effective technical platform for the realization of a solid-state system for a large-scale quantum optical network and other quantum technologies based on a large number of spectral channels from visible to midinfrared wavelengths.

A plethora of correlated and exotic metallic states have been identified on the border of itinerant magnetism, where the long-range spin texture is melted by tuning the magnetic transition temperature (T$_C$) towards zero, referred to as the quantum phase transition (QPT). So far, the study of QPT in itinerant magnets has mainly focused on low-T$_C$ materials (i.e., typically T$_C$ ~ 10 K) where the modification of electronic band structure is subtle, and only makes a small contribution to the QPT. Here we report a distinct example of a magnetic QPT accompanied by a gigantic modification of the electronic structure in FeGe, i.e., a well-studied itinerant chiral magnet hosting near-room-temperature (T$_C$ = 278 K) helical/skyrmion spin texture. The pressure-driven modification of the band structure (e.g., reduction of exchange splitting) is evidenced by magneto-transport study, suggesting a Fermi-surface reconstruction around the magnetic QPT (P ~19 GPa), in stark contrast to the case of typical metallic ferromagnets. Further application of pressure leads to a metal-to-insulator transition above P > 30 GPa, as also corroborated by our density-functional theory (DFT) calculation. Of particular interest is the occurrence of anomalous magneto-transport in the inhomogeneous short-range chiral-spin ground state (P = 20-30 GPa) above the QPT, with longitudinal fluctuations of magnetization. The unexpected observation of spontaneous anomalous Hall effect in this exotic quantum regime suggests macroscopic time-reversal symmetry (TRS) breaking, even in the absence of long-range magnetic order. Our findings mark the large body of unexplored high-T$_C$ itinerant magnets with broken inversion-symmetry as promising candidates of novel ground state formation near QPT.

A standard assumption in the fitting of unordered multinomial response models for $J$ mutually exclusive nominal categories, on cross-sectional or longitudinal data, is that the responses arise from the same set of $J$ categories between subjects. However, when responses measure a choice made by the subject, it is more appropriate to assume that the distribution of multinomial responses is conditioned on a subject-specific consideration set, where this consideration set is drawn from the power set of $\{1,2,\ldots,J\}$. Because the cardinality of this power set is exponential in $J$, estimation is infeasible in general. In this paper, we provide an approach to overcoming this problem. A key step in the approach is a probability model over consideration sets, based on a general representation of probability distributions on contingency tables, which results in mixtures of independent consideration models. Although the support of this distribution is exponentially large, the posterior distribution over consideration sets given parameters is typically sparse, and is easily sampled in an MCMC scheme. We show posterior consistency of the parameters of the conditional response model and the distribution of consideration sets. The effectiveness of the methodology is documented in simulated longitudinal data sets with $J=100$ categories and real data from the cereal market with $J=68$ brands.

This paper examines the micro-parameters of superconductors. It studies the modulations from weak van der Waals interaction to strong covalence bonding of superconductors. In particular, we studied layered black phosphorus (BP) as a function of pressure. These results reveal a rich scenario of phase transitions and related quantum phenomena, which show that the phases exhibit superconducting states at a pressure higher than 5.0 GPa. In addition, they indicate an angle-dependent upper critical field that demonstrates the dimensional characteristics of superconductivities. This result suggests that the A17 and cubic phases are three-dimensional (3D). The A7 phase shows a two-dimensional (2D) character. The 2D behavior is related to a weakened, distorted, entangled interlayer coupling.

The emergent electric field (EEF) is a fictitious electric field acting on conduction electrons through the Berry phase mechanism. The EEF is generated by the dynamics of noncollinear spin configurations and becomes nonzero even in one dimension. Although the EEF has been studied for several one-dimensional chiral magnets, most of the theoretical studies were limited with respect to the strength and direction of the magnetic fields. Furthermore, the effect of edges of the system has not been clarified, whereas it can be crucial in nano- and micro-scale samples. Here, we perform a theoretical study on the momentum-frequency profile of the EEF in a one-dimensional chiral magnet while changing the strength and direction of the magnetic field for both bulk and finite-size chains with edges. As the bulk contributions, we find that the EEF is resonantly enhanced at the magnetic resonance frequencies; interestingly, the higher resonance modes are more clearly visible in the EEF response than in the magnetic one. Furthermore, we show that the EEF is amplified along with the solitonic feature of the spin texture introduced by the static magnetic field perpendicular to the chiral axis. We also show that the static magnetic field parallel to the chiral axis drives the EEF in the field direction, in addition to much slower drift motion in the opposite direction associated with the Archimedean screw dynamics, suggesting a DC electric current generation. As the edge contributions, we find additional resonance modes localized at the edges of the system that are also more clearly visible in the EEF response than the magnetic one. Our results reveal that the emergent electric phenomena in one-dimensional chiral magnets can be tuned by the magnetic field and the sample size, and provide not only a good probe of the magnetic resonances but also a platform for the applications to electronic devices.

Voice digital assistants must keep up with trending search queries. We rely on a speech recognition model using contextual biasing with a rapidly updated set of entities, instead of frequent model retraining, to keep up with trends. There are several challenges with this approach: (1) the entity set must be frequently reconstructed, (2) the entity set is of limited size due to latency and accuracy trade-offs, and (3) finding the true entity distribution for biasing is complicated by ASR misrecognition. We address these challenges and define an entity set by modeling customers true requested entity distribution from ASR output in production using record deduplication, a technique from the field of entity resolution. Record deduplication resolves or deduplicates coreferences, including misrecognitions, of the same latent entity. Our method successfully retrieves 95% of misrecognized entities and when used for contextual biasing shows an estimated 5% relative word error rate reduction.

Understanding ionic behaviour under external electric fields is crucial to develop electronic and energy-related devices using ion transport. In this study, we propose a neural network (NN) model to predict the Born effective charges of ions along an axis parallel to an applied electric field from atomic structures. The proposed NN model is applied to Li$_3$PO$_4$ as a prototype. The prediction error of the constructed NN model is 0.0376 $e$/atom. In combination with an NN interatomic potential, molecular dynamics (MD) simulations are performed under a uniform electric field of 0.1 V/angstrom, whereby an enhanced mean square displacement of Li along the electric field is obtained, which seems physically reasonable. In addition, the external forces along the direction perpendicular to the electric field, originating from the off-diagonal terms of the Born effective charges, are found to have a nonnegligible effect on Li migration. Finally, additional MD simulations are performed to examine the Li motion in an amorphous structure. The results reveal that Li migration occurs in various areas despite the absence of explicitly introduced defects, which may be attributed to the susceptibility of the Li ions in the local minima to the electric field. We expect that the proposed NN method can be applied to any ionic material, thereby leading to atomic-scale elucidation of ion behaviour under electric fields.

We investigate the phase ordering kinetics of skyrmion lattice (SkL) in a metallic magnet. The SkL can be viewed as a superposition of magnetic stripes whose periods are determined by the quasi-nesting wave vectors of the underlying Fermi surface. An effective magnetic Hamiltonian that describes the electron-mediated spin-spin interaction is obtained for a two-dimensional s-d model with the Rashba spin-orbit coupling. Large-scale Landau-Lifshitz-Gilbert dynamics simulations based on the effective spin Hamiltonian reveal a two-stage phase ordering of the SkL phase after a thermal quench. The initial fast crystallization of skyrmions is followed by a slow relaxation dominated by the annihilation dynamics of dislocations, which are topological defects of the constituent magnetic stripe orders. The late-stage phase ordering also exhibits a dynamical scaling symmetry. We further show that the annihilation of dislocations follows a power-law time dependence with a logarithmic correction that depends on magnetic fields. Implications of our results for SkL phases in magnetic materials are also discussed.

We report the first search result for the flux of astrophysical electron antineutrinos for energies O(10) MeV in the gadolinium-loaded Super-Kamiokande (SK) detector. In June 2020, gadolinium was introduced to the ultra-pure water of the SK detector in order to detect neutrons more efficiently. In this new experimental phase, SK-Gd, we can search for electron antineutrinos via inverse beta decay with efficient background rejection and higher signal efficiency thanks to the high efficiency of the neutron tagging technique. In this paper, we report the result for the initial stage of SK-Gd with a $22.5\times552$ $\rm kton\cdot day$ exposure at 0.01% Gd mass concentration. No significant excess over the expected background in the observed events is found for the neutrino energies below 31.3 MeV. Thus, the flux upper limits are placed at the 90% confidence level. The limits and sensitivities are already comparable with the previous SK result with pure-water ($22.5 \times 2970 \rm kton\cdot day$) owing to the enhanced neutron tagging.

Spinel oxides are an important class of materials for heterogeneous catalysis including photocatalysis and electrocatalysis. The surface O vacancy formation energy (EOvac) is a critical quantity on catalyst performance because the surface of metal oxide catalysts often acts as reaction sites, for example, in the Mars-van Krevelen mechanism. However, experimental evaluation of EOvac is very challenging. We obtained the EOvac for (100), (110), and (111) surfaces of normal zinc-based spinel oxides ZnAl2O4, ZnGa2O4, ZnIn2O4, ZnV2O4, ZnCr2O4, ZnMn2O4, ZnFe2O4, and ZnCo2O4. The most stable surface is (100) for all compounds. The smallest EOvac for a surface is the largest in the (100) surface except for ZnCo2O4. For (100) and (110) surfaces, there is a good correlation, over all spinels, between the smallest EOvac for the surface and bulk formation energy, while the ionization potential correlates well in (111) surfaces. Machine learning over EOvac of all surface sites in all orientations and all compounds to find the important factors, or descriptors, that decide the EOvac revealed that bulk and surface-dependent descriptors are the most important, namely the bulk formation energy, a Boolean descriptor on whether the surface is (111), and the ionization potential, followed by geometrical descriptors that are different in each O site.

Metal/oxide support perimeter sites are known to provide unique properties because the nearby metal changes the local environment on the support surface. In particular, the electron scavenger effect reduces the energy necessary for surface anion desorption, thereby contributes to activation of the (reverse) Mars-van Krevelen mechanism. This study investigated the possibility of such activation in hydrides, carbides, nitrides, and sulfides. The work functions (WFs) of known hydrides, carbides, nitrides, oxides, and sulfides with group 3, 4, or 5 cations (Sc, Y, La, Ti, Zr, Hf, V, Nb, and Ta) were calculated. The WFs of most hydrides, carbides, and nitrides are smaller than the WF of Ag, implying that the electron scavenger effect may occur when late transition metal nanoparticles are adsorbed on the surface. The WF of oxides and sulfides decrease when reduced. The surface anion vacancy formation energy correlates well with the bulk formation energy in carbides and nitrides, while almost no correlation is found in hydrides because of the small range of surface hydrogen vacancy formation energy values. The electron scavenger effect is explicitly observed in nanorods adsorbed on TiH2 and Ti2O3; the surface vacancy formation energy decreases at anion sites near the nanorod, and charge transfer to the nanorod happens when an anion is removed at such sites. Activation of hydrides, carbides, and nitrides by nanorod adsorption and screening support materials through WF calculation are expected to open up a new category of supported catalysts.

Deep-learning inverse techniques have attracted significant attention in recent years. Among them, the neural adjoint (NA) method, which employs a neural network surrogate simulator, has demonstrated impressive performance in the design tasks of artificial electromagnetic materials (AEM). However, the impact of the surrogate simulators' accuracy on the solutions in the NA method remains uncertain. Furthermore, achieving sufficient optimization becomes challenging in this method when the surrogate simulator is large, and computational resources are limited. Additionally, the behavior under constraints has not been studied, despite its importance from the engineering perspective. In this study, we investigated the impact of surrogate simulators' accuracy on the solutions and discovered that the more accurate the surrogate simulator is, the better the solutions become. We then developed an extension of the NA method, named Neural Lagrangian (NeuLag) method, capable of efficiently optimizing a sufficient number of solution candidates. We then demonstrated that the NeuLag method can find optimal solutions even when handling sufficient candidates is difficult due to the use of a large and accurate surrogate simulator. The resimulation errors of the NeuLag method were approximately 1/50 compared to previous methods for three AEM tasks. Finally, we performed optimization under constraint using NA and NeuLag, and confirmed their potential in optimization with soft or hard constraints. We believe our method holds potential in areas that require large and accurate surrogate simulators.

We compared the Matlantis bulk formation, surface, and surface O vacancy formation energies of metal hydrides, carbides, nitrides, oxides, and sulfides with our previously calculated VASP values obtained from first-principles with the PBEsol(+U) functional. Matlantis bulk formation energies were consistently ~0.1 eV/atom larger and the surface energies were typically ~10 meV/Å^2 smaller than the VASP counterpart. Surface O vacancy formation energies were generally underestimated within ~0.8 eV. These results suggest that Matlantis energies could serve as a relatively good descriptor of the VASP bulk formation and surface energies.

Bright sources of polarization-entangled photon pairs are essential components for quantum information technologies. In general, it is necessary to introduce a resonator that combines active optical components such as an electric optical modulator to enhance the stimulated emission of polarization-entangled photons. It is technically difficult to perform the time series operation to output the stimulated entangled photons in the resonator by synchronizing laser pulses. In this paper, we propose a scheme to scale up the stimulated emission of polarization-entangled photon pairs using a resonator with only passive optical components. We show the theoretical aspects of the scheme and also perform a proof-of-principle experimental demonstration of the scheme in a double-pass configuration.

We study the role the the p-mode-like vertical oscillation on the photosphere in driving solar winds in the framework of Alfven-wave-driven winds. By performing one-dimensional magnetohydrodynamical numerical simulations from the photosphere to the interplanetary space, we discover that the mass-loss rate is raised up to 4 times as the amplitude of longitudinal perturbations at the photosphere increases. When the longitudinal fluctuation is added, transverse waves are generated by the mode conversion from longitudinal waves in the chromosphere, which increases Alfvenic Poynting flux in the corona. As a result, the coronal heating is enhanced to yield higher coronal density by the chromospheric evaporation, leading to the increase of the mass-loss rate. Our findings clearly show the importance of the p-mode oscillation in the photosphere and the mode conversion in the chromosphere in determining the basic properties of the wind from the sun and solar-type stars.

We searched using the Super-Kamiokande detector for neutrinos from solar flares that occurred during solar cycles $23$ and $24$, including the largest solar flare (X28.0) on November 4th, 2003. In order to minimize the background rate we searched for neutrino interactions within narrow time windows coincident with $γ$-rays and soft X-rays recorded by satellites. In addition, we performed the first attempt to search for solar-flare neutrinos from solar flares on the invisible side of the Sun by using the emission time of coronal mass ejections (CMEs). By selecting twenty powerful solar flares above X5.0 on the visible side and eight CMEs whose emission speed exceeds $2000$ $\mathrm{km \, s^{-1}}$ on the invisible side from 1996 to 2018, we found two (six) neutrino events coincident with solar flares occurring on the visible (invisible) side of the Sun, with a typical background rate of $0.10$ ($0.62$) events per flare in the MeV-GeV energy range. No significant solar-flare neutrino signal above the estimated background rate was observed. As a result we set the following upper limit on neutrino fluence at the Earth $\mathitΦ<1.1\times10^{6}$ $\mathrm{cm^{-2}}$ at the $90\%$ confidence level for the largest solar flare. The resulting fluence limits allow us to constrain some of the theoretical models for solar-flare neutrino emission.

We report a search for cosmic-ray boosted dark matter with protons using the 0.37 megaton$\times$years data collected at Super-Kamiokande experiment during the 1996-2018 period (SKI-IV phase). We searched for an excess of proton recoils above the atmospheric neutrino background from the vicinity of the Galactic Center. No such excess is observed, and limits are calculated for two reference models of dark matter with either a constant interaction cross-section or through a scalar mediator. This is the first experimental search for boosted dark matter with hadrons using directional information. The results present the most stringent limits on cosmic-ray boosted dark matter and exclude the dark matter-nucleon elastic scattering cross-section between $10^{-33}\text{ cm}^{2}$ and $10^{-27}\text{ cm}^{2}$ for dark matter mass from 10 MeV/$c^2$ to 1 GeV/$c^2$.

High-accuracy prediction of the physical properties of amorphous materials is challenging in condensed-matter physics. A promising method to achieve this is machine-learning potentials, which is an alternative to computationally demanding ab initio calculations. When applying machine-learning potentials, the construction of descriptors to represent atomic configurations is crucial. These descriptors should be invariant to symmetry operations. Handcrafted representations using a smooth overlap of atomic positions and graph neural networks (GNN) are examples of methods used for constructing symmetry-invariant descriptors. In this study, we propose a novel descriptor based on a persistence diagram (PD), a two-dimensional representation of persistent homology (PH). First, we demonstrated that the normalized two-dimensional histogram obtained from PD could predict the average energy per atom of amorphous carbon (aC) at various densities, even when using a simple model. Second, an analysis of the dimensional reduction results of the descriptor spaces revealed that PH can be used to construct descriptors with characteristics similar to those of a latent space in a GNN. These results indicate that PH is a promising method for constructing descriptors suitable for machine-learning potentials without hyperparameter tuning and deep-learning techniques.

The analysis of data collected from 2008 to 2018 found no evidence of distant supernovae bursts. This establishes an upper limit of 0.29 year$^{-1}$ on the rate of core-collapse supernovae out to 100 kpc at 90% C.L.. For supernovae that fail to explode and collapse directly to black holes the limit reaches to 300 kpc.

In 2020, the Super-Kamiokande (SK) experiment moved to a new stage (SK-Gd) in which gadolinium (Gd) sulfate octahydrate was added to the water in the detector, enhancing the efficiency to detect thermal neutrons and consequently improving the sensitivity to low energy electron anti-neutrinos from inverse beta decay (IBD) interactions. SK-Gd has the potential to provide early alerts of incipient core-collapse supernovae through detection of electron anti-neutrinos from thermal and nuclear processes responsible for the cooling of massive stars before the gravitational collapse of their cores. These pre-supernova neutrinos emitted during the silicon burning phase can exceed the energy threshold for IBD reactions. We present the sensitivity of SK-Gd to pre-supernova stars and the techniques used for the development of a pre-supernova alarm based on the detection of these neutrinos in SK, as well as prospects for future SK-Gd phases with higher concentrations of Gd. For the current SK-Gd phase, high-confidence alerts for Betelgeuse could be issued up to nine hours in advance of the core-collapse itself.
