Uncertainty in medical image segmentation tasks, especially inter-rater variability, arising from differences in interpretations and annotations by various experts, presents a significant challenge in achieving consistent and reliable image segmentation. This variability not only reflects the inherent complexity and subjective nature of medical image interpretation but also directly impacts the development and evaluation of automated segmentation algorithms. Accurately modeling and quantifying this variability is essential for enhancing the robustness and clinical applicability of these algorithms. We report the set-up and summarize the benchmark results of the Quantification of Uncertainties in Biomedical Image Quantification Challenge (QUBIQ), which was organized in conjunction with International Conferences on Medical Image Computing and Computer-Assisted Intervention (MICCAI) 2020 and 2021. The challenge focuses on the uncertainty quantification of medical image segmentation which considers the omnipresence of inter-rater variability in imaging datasets. The large collection of images with multi-rater annotations features various modalities such as MRI and CT; various organs such as the brain, prostate, kidney, and pancreas; and different image dimensions 2D-vs-3D. A total of 24 teams submitted different solutions to the problem, combining various baseline models, Bayesian neural networks, and ensemble model techniques. The obtained results indicate the importance of the ensemble models, as well as the need for further research to develop efficient 3D methods for uncertainty quantification methods in 3D segmentation tasks.

Given billboard and trajectory database, finding a limited number of billboard slots for maximizing the influence is an important problem in the context of billboard advertisement. Most of the existing literature focused on the influential slot selection problem without considering any specific zonal influence constraint. To bridge this gap in this paper, we introduce and study the Influential Billboard Slot Selection Problem Under Zonal Influence Constraint. We propose a simple greedy approach to solve this problem. Though this method is easy to understand and simple to implement due to the excessive number of marginal gain computations, this method is not scalable. We design a branch and bound framework with two bound estimation techniques that divide the problem into different zones and integrate the zone-specific solutions to obtain a solution for the whole. We implement both the solution methodologies with real-world billboard and trajectory datasets and several experiments have been reported. We compare the performance of the proposed solution approaches with several baseline methods. The results show that the proposed approaches lead to more effective solutions with reasonable computational overhead than the baseline methods.

In a typical billboard advertisement technique, a number of digital billboards are owned by an influence provider, and many advertisers approach the influence provider for a specific number of views of their advertisement content on a payment basis. If the influence provider provides the demanded or more influence, then he will receive the full payment or else a partial payment. In the context of an influence provider, if he provides more or less than an advertiser's demanded influence, it is a loss for him. This is formalized as 'Regret', and naturally, in the context of the influence provider, the goal will be to allocate the billboard slots among the advertisers such that the total regret is minimized. In this paper, we study this problem as a discrete optimization problem and propose four solution approaches. The first one selects the billboard slots from the available ones in an incremental greedy manner, and we call this method the Budget Effective Greedy approach. In the second one, we introduce randomness with the first one, where we perform the marginal gain computation for a sample of randomly chosen billboard slots. The remaining two approaches are further improvements over the second one. We analyze all the algorithms to understand their time and space complexity. We implement them with real-life trajectory and billboard datasets and conduct a number of experiments. It has been observed that the randomized budget effective greedy approach takes reasonable computational time while minimizing the regret.

The selection of influential billboard slots remains an important problem in billboard advertisements. Existing studies on this problem have not considered the case of context-specific influence probability. To bridge this gap, in this paper, we introduce the Context Dependent Influential Billboard Slot Selection Problem. First, we show that the problem is NP-hard. We also show that the influence function holds the bi-monotonicity, bi-submodularity, and non-negativity properties. We propose an orthant-wise Stochastic Greedy approach to solve this problem. We show that this method leads to a constant factor approximation guarantee. Subsequently, we propose an orthant-wise Incremental and Lazy Greedy approach. In a generic sense, this is a method for maximizing a bi-submodular function under the cardinality constraint, which may also be of independent interest. We analyze the performance guarantee of this algorithm as well as time and space complexity. The proposed solution approaches have been implemented with real-world billboard and trajectory datasets. We compare the performance of our method with many baseline methods, and the results are reported. Our proposed orthant-wise stochastic greedy approach leads to significant results when the parameters are set properly with reasonable computational overhead.

Billboard advertising is a popular out-of-home advertising technique adopted by commercial houses. Companies own billboards and offer them to commercial houses on a payment basis. Given a database of billboards with slot information, we want to determine which k slots to choose to maximize influence. We call this the INFLUENTIAL BILLBOARD SLOT SELECTION (IBSS) Problem and pose it as a combinatorial optimization problem. We show that the influence function considered in this paper is non-negative, monotone, and submodular. The incremental greedy approach based on the marginal gain computation leads to a constant factor approximation guarantee. However, this method scales very poorly when the size of the problem instance is very large. To address this, we propose a spatial partitioning and pruned submodularity graph-based approach that is divided into the following three steps: preprocessing, pruning, and selection. We analyze the proposed solution approaches to understand their time, space requirement, and performance guarantee. We conduct extensive set of experiments with real-world datasets and compare the performance of the proposed solution approaches with the available baseline methods. We observe that the proposed approaches lead to more influence than all the baseline methods within reasonable computational time.

Crucial to enabling such research is the availability of high-quality annotated datasets. In this paper, we introduce AfriSenti, a sentiment analysis benchmark that contains a total of >110,000 tweets in 14 African languages (Amharic, Algerian Arabic, Hausa, Igbo, Kinyarwanda, Moroccan Arabic, Mozambican Portuguese, Nigerian Pidgin, Oromo, Swahili, Tigrinya, Twi, Xitsonga, and Yorùbá) from four language families. The tweets were annotated by native speakers and used in the AfriSenti-SemEval shared task (The AfriSenti Shared Task had over 200 participants. See website at https://afrisenti-semeval.github.io). We describe the data collection methodology, annotation process, and the challenges we dealt with when curating each dataset. We further report baseline experiments conducted on the different datasets and discuss their usefulness.

Here this paper we proposed a Novel Distributed Database Architectural Model for Mobile Cloud Computing (NDDAMMCC). Due to the exponential growth of wireless technologies and internet which are following Nielsen's Law of Internet Bandwidth, we are in the new era of cloud computing. In the recent technological era, smart mobile devices play a big role in all sort of day-by-day human needs. The applicability is so huge that the number of apps install on a mobile system becomes a hazard due to local memory limitations for mobile phone users and demands an alternative approach to solve this local memory problems. Mobile Cloud Computing (MCC) is the ultimate solution to this issue and our model presents a promising path in this new kind of cloud computing technology.

An Important tool in the field topological data analysis is known as persistent Homology (PH) which is used to encode abstract representation of the homology of data at different resolutions in the form of persistence diagram (PD). In this work we build more than one PD representation of a single image based on a landmark selection method, known as local binary patterns, that encode different types of local textures from images. We employed different PD vectorizations using persistence landscapes, persistence images, persistence binning (Betti Curve) and statistics. We tested the effectiveness of proposed landmark based PH on two publicly available breast abnormality detection datasets using mammogram scans. Sensitivity of landmark based PH obtained is over 90% in both datasets for the detection of abnormal breast scans. Finally, experimental results give new insights on using different types of PD vectorizations which help in utilising PH in conjunction with machine learning classifiers.

But for most languages in the world, the existence of such corpora is rare. Emakhuwa, a language spoken in Mozambique, is like most African languages low-resource in NLP terms. It lacks both computational and linguistic resources and, to the best of our knowledge, few parallel corpora including Emakhuwa already exist. In this paper we describe the creation of the Emakhuwa-Portuguese parallel corpus, which is a collection of texts from the Jehovah's Witness website and a variety of other sources including the African Story Book website, the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and Mozambican legal documents. The dataset contains 47,415 sentence pairs, amounting to 699,976 word tokens of Emakhuwa and 877,595 word tokens in Portuguese. After normalization processes which remain to be completed, the corpus will be made freely available for research use.

Almost every major language has software solutions for this translation purpose. However, in Bengali there is an absence of this useful tool. Here, we propose Braille to Text Translator, which takes image of these tactile alphabets, and translates them to plain text. Image deterioration, scan-time page rotation, and braille dot deformation are the principal issues in this scheme. All of these challenges are directly checked using special image processing and geometric structure analysis. The technique yields 97.25% accuracy in recognizing Braille characters.

With the rising interest in Virtual Reality and the fast development and improvement of available devices, new features of interactions are becoming available. One of them that is becoming very popular is hand tracking, as the idea to replace controllers for interactions in virtual worlds. This experiment aims to compare different interaction types in VR using either controllers or hand tracking. Participants had to play two simple VR games with various types of tasks in those games - grabbing objects or typing numbers. While playing, they were using interactions with different visualizations of hands and controllers. The focus of this study was to investigate user experience of varying interactions (controller vs. hand tracking) for those two simple tasks. Results show that different interaction types statistically significantly influence reported emotions with Self-Assessment Manikin (SAM), where for hand tracking participants were feeling higher valence, but lower arousal and dominance. Additionally, task type of grabbing was reported to be more realistic, and participants experienced a higher presence. Surprisingly, participants rated the interaction type with controllers where both where hands and controllers were visualized as statistically most preferred. Finally, hand tracking for both tasks was rated with the System Usability Scale (SUS) scale, and hand tracking for the task typing was rated as statistically significantly more usable. These results can drive further research and, in the long term, contribute to help selecting the most matching interaction modality for a task.

Virtual Reality (VR) has an increasing impact on the market in many fields, from education and medicine to engineering and entertainment, by creating different applications that replicate or in the case of augmentation enhance real-life scenarios. Intending to present realistic environments, VR applications are including text that we are surrounded by every day. However, text can only add value to the virtual environment if it is designed and created in such a way that users can comfortably read it. With the aim to explore what values for text parameters users find comfortable while reading in virtual reality, a study was conducted allowing participants to manipulate text parameters such as font size, distance, and contrast. Therefore two different standalone virtual reality devices were used, Oculus Go and Quest, together with three different text samples: Short (2 words), medium (21 words), and long (51 words). Participants had the task of setting text parameters to the best and worst possible value. Additionally, participants were asked to rate their experience of reading in virtual reality. Results report mean values for angular size (the combination of distance and font size) and color contrast depending on the different device used as well as the varying text length, for both tasks. Significant differences were found for values of angular size, depending on the length of the displayed text. However, different device types had no significant influence on text parameters but on the experiences reported using the self-assessment manikin (SAM) scale.

In recent years 360$^{\circ}$ videos have been becoming more popular. For traditional media presentations, e.g., on a computer screen, a wide range of assessment methods are available. Different constructs, such as perceived quality or the induced emotional state of viewers, can be reliably assessed by subjective scales. Many of the subjective methods have only been validated using stimuli presented on a computer screen. This paper is using 360$^{\circ}$ videos to induce varying emotional states. Videos were presented 1) via a head-mounted display (HMD) and 2) via a traditional computer screen. Furthermore, participants were asked to rate their emotional state 1) in retrospect on the self-assessment manikin scale and 2) continuously on a 2-dimensional arousal-valence plane. In a repeated measures design, all participants (N = 18) used both presentation systems and both rating systems. Results indicate that there is a statistically significant difference in induced presence due to the presentation system. Furthermore, there was no statistically significant difference in ratings gathered with the two presentation systems. Finally, it was found that for arousal measures, a statistically significant difference could be found for the different rating methods, potentially indicating an underestimation of arousal ratings gathered in retrospect for screen presentation. In the future, rating methods such as a 2-dimensional arousal-valence plane could offer the advantage of enabling a reliable measurement of emotional states while being more embedded in the experience itself, enabling a more precise capturing of the emotional states.

While first-order channel statistics, such as bit-error rate (BER) and outage probability, play an important role in the design of wireless communication systems, they provide information only on the static behavior of fading channels. On the other hand, second-order statistics, such as level crossing rate (LCR) and average outage duration (AOD), capture the correlation properties of fading channels, hence, are used in system design notably in packet-based transmission systems. In this paper, exact closed-form expressions are derived for the LCR and AOD of the signal at a receiver where maximal-ratio combining (MRC) is deployed over flat Rayleigh fading channels in the presence of additive white Gaussian noise (AWGN) and co-channel interferers with unequal transmitting powers and unequal speeds. Moreover, in order to gain insight on the LCR behavior, a simplified approximate expression for the LCR is presented. As an application of LCR in system designs, the packet error rate (PER) is evaluated through finite state Markov chain (FSMC) model. Finally, as another application again by using the FSMC model, the optimum packet length to maximize the throughput of the system with stop-and-wait automatic repeat request (SW-ARQ) protocol is derived. Simulation results validating the presented expressions are provided.

The following paper reviews recent developments in the field of optimization of space robotics. The extent of focus of this paper is on the perception (robotic sense of analyzing surroundings) in space robots in the exploration of extra-terrestrial planets. Robots play a crucial role in exploring extra-terrestrial and planetary bodies. Their advantages are far from being counted on finger tips. With the advent of autonomous robots in the field of robotics, the role for space exploration has further hustled up. Optimization of such autonomous robots has turned into a necessity of the hour. Optimized robots tend to have a superior role in space exploration. With so many considerations to monitor, an optimized solution will nevertheless help a planetary rover perform better under tight circumstances. Keeping in view the above mentioned area, the paper describes recent developments in the optimization of autonomous extra-terrestrial rovers.
