Quantum communication systems support unique applications in the form of distributed quantum computing, distributed quantum sensing, and several cryptographic protocols. The main enabler in these communication systems is an efficient infrastructure that is capable to transport unknown quantum states with high rate and fidelity. This feat requires a new approach to communication system design which efficiently exploits the available physical layer resources, while respecting the limitations and principles of quantum information. Despite the fundamental differences between the classic and quantum worlds, there exist universal communication concepts that may proven beneficial in quantum communication systems as well. In this survey, the distinctive aspects of physical layer quantum communications are highlighted in a attempt to draw commonalities and divergences between classic and quantum communications. More specifically, we begin by overviewing the quantum channels and use cases over diverse optical propagation media, shedding light on the concepts of crosstalk and interference. Subsequently, we survey quantum sources, detectors, channels and modulation techniques. More importantly, we discuss and analyze spatial multiplexing techniques, such as coherent control, multiplexing, diversity and MIMO. Finally, we identify synergies between the two communication technologies and grand open challenges that can be pivotal in the development of next-generation quantum communication systems.

Universal connectivity has been part of past and current generations of wireless systems, but as we approach 6G, the subject of social responsibility is being built as a core component. Given the advent of Non-Terrestrial Networks (NTN), reaching these goals will be much closer to realization than ever before. Owing to the benefits of NTN, the integration NTN and Terrestrial Networks (TN) is still infancy, where the past, the current and the future releases in the 3$^{\text{rd}}$ Generation Partnership Project (3GPP) provide guidelines to adopt a successfully co-existence/integration of TN and NTN. Therefore, in this article, we have illustrated through 3GPP guidelines, on how NTN and TN can effectively be integrated. Moreover, the role of beamforming and Artificial Intelligence (AI) algorithms is highlighted to achieve this integration. Finally the usefulness of integrating NTN and TN is validated through experimental analysis.

The terahertz communications have the potential to revolutionize data transfer with unmatched speed and facilitate the development of new high-bandwidth applications. This paper studies the performance of downlink terahertz system assisted by beyond diagonal intelligent reconfigurable surface (BD-IRS). For enhanced energy efficiency and low cost, a joint precoding and BD-IRS phase shift design satisfying the $1$-bit resolution constraints to maximize the spectral efficiency is presented. The original problem is non-linear, NP-hard, and intricately coupled, and obtaining an optimal solution is challenging. To reduce the complexity, we first transform the optimization problem into two problems and then iteratively solve them to achieve an efficient solution. Numerical results demonstrate that the proposed approach for the BD-IRS assisted terahertz system significantly enhances the spectral efficiency compared to the conventional diagonal IRS assisted system.

Reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS) has emerged as a promising technology in both terrestrial and non-terrestrial networks (NTNs) due to its ability to manipulate wireless environments for better connectivity. Significant studies have been focused on conventional RIS with diagonal phase response matrices. This simple RIS architecture, though less expensive, has limited flexibility in engineering the wireless channels. As the latest member of RIS technology, beyond diagonal RIS (BD-RIS) has recently been proposed in terrestrial setups. Due to the interconnected phase response elements, BD-RIS significantly enhances the control over the wireless environment. This work proposes the potential and challenges of BD-RIS in NTNs. We begin with the motivation and recent advances in BD-RIS. Subsequently, we discuss the fundamentals of BD-RIS and NTNs. We then outline the application of BD-RIS in NTNs, followed by a case study on BD-RIS enabled non-orthogonal multiple access low earth orbit satellite communication. Finally, we highlight challenges and research directions with concluding remarks.

The careful planning and safe deployment of 5G technologies will bring enormous benefits to society and the economy. Higher frequency, beamforming, and small-cells are key technologies that will provide unmatched throughput and seamless connectivity to 5G users. Superficial knowledge of these technologies has raised concerns among the general public about the harmful effects of radiation. Several standardization bodies are active to put limits on the emissions which are based on a defined set of radiation measurement methodologies. However, due to the peculiarity of 5G such as dynamicity of the beams, network densification, Time Division Duplexing mode of operation, etc, using existing EMF measurement methods may provide inaccurate results. In this context, we discuss our experimental studies aimed towards the measurement of radiation caused by beam-based transmissions from a 5G base station equipped with an Active Antenna System(AAS). We elaborate on the shortcomings of current measurement methodologies and address several open questions. Next, we demonstrate that using user-specific downlink beamforming, not only better performance is achieved compared to non-beamformed downlink, but also the radiation in the vicinity of the intended user is significantly decreased. Further, we show that under weak reception conditions, an uplink transmission can cause significantly high radiation in the vicinity of the user equipment. We believe that our work will help in clearing several misleading concepts about the 5G EMF radiation effects. We conclude the work by providing guidelines to improve the methodology of EMF measurement by considering the spatiotemporal dynamicity of the 5G transmission.

Contrary to previous works on multiuser SIM, we consider statistical channel state information (CSI) as opposed to instantaneous CSI to overcome challenges such as large overhead. Also, we examine the performance of large surfaces. We apply an alternating optimization (AO) algorithm regarding the phases of the SIM and the allocated transmit power. In this paper, we investigate the performance of large-scale heterogeneous low Earth orbit (LEO) satellite networks in the context of three association schemes. In contrast to existing studies, where single-tier LEO satellite-based network deployments are considered, the developed framework captures the heterogeneous nature of real-world satellite network deployments. More specifically, we propose an analytical framework to evaluate the performance of multi-tier LEO satellite-based networks, where the locations of LEO satellites are approximated as points of independent Poisson point processes, with different density, transmit power, and altitude. We propose three association schemes for the considered network topology based on: 1) the Euclidean distance, 2) the average received power, and 3) a random selection. By using stochastic geometry tools, analytical expressions for the association probability, the downlink coverage probability, as well as the spectral efficiency are derived for each association scheme, where the interference is considered. Moreover, we assess the achieved network performance under several different fading environments, including low, typical, and severe fading conditions, namely non-fading, shadowed-Rician and Rayleigh fading channels, respectively. Our results reveal the impact of fading channels on the coverage probability, and illustrate that the average power-based association scheme outperforms in terms of achieved coverage and spectral efficiency performance against the other two association policies. Furthermore, we highlight the impact of the proposed association schemes and the network topology on the optimal number of LEO satellites, providing guidance for the planning of multi-tier LEO satellite-based networks in order to enhance network performance.

Integrated sensing and communication (ISAC) is expected to play a prominent role among emerging technologies in future wireless communications. In particular, a communication radar coexistence system is degraded significantly by mutual interference. In this work, given the advantages of promising reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS), we propose a simultaneously transmitting and reflecting RIS (STAR-RIS)-assisted radar coexistence system where a STAR-RIS is introduced to improve the communication performance while suppressing the mutual interference and providing full space coverage. Based on the realistic conditions of correlated fading, and the presence of multiple user equipments (UEs) at both sides of the RIS, we derive the achievable rates at the radar and the communication receiver side in closed forms in terms of statistical channel state information (CSI). Next, we perform alternating optimization (AO) for optimizing the STAR-RIS and the radar beamforming. Regarding the former, we optimize the amplitudes and phase shifts of the STAR-RIS through a projected gradient ascent algorithm (PGAM) simultaneously with respect to the amplitudes and phase shifts of the surface for both energy splitting (ES) and mode switching (MS) operation protocols. The proposed optimization saves enough overhead since it can be performed every several coherence intervals. This property is particularly beneficial compared to reflecting-only RIS because a STAR-RIS includes the double number of variables, which require increased overhead. Finally, simulation results illustrate how the proposed architecture outperforms the conventional RIS counterpart, and show how the various parameters affect the performance. Moreover, a benchmark full instantaneous CSI (I-CSI) based design is provided and shown to result in higher sum-rate but also in large overhead associated with complexity.

In this paper, we investigate a joint computation offloading and target tracking in Integrated Sensing and Communication (ISAC)-enabled unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) network. Therein, the UAV has a computing task that is partially offloaded to the ground UE for execution. Meanwhile, the UAV uses the offloading bit sequence to estimate the velocity of a ground target based on an autocorrelation function. The performance of the velocity estimation that is represented by Cramer-Rao lower bound (CRB) depends on the length of the offloading bit sequence and the UAV's location. Thus, we jointly optimize the task size for offloading and the UAV's location to minimize the overall computation latency and the CRB of the mean square error for velocity estimation subject to the UAV's budget. The problem is non-convex, and we propose a genetic algorithm to solve it. Simulation results are provided to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed algorithm.

Terrestrial networks form the fundamental infrastructure of modern communication systems, serving more than 4 billion users globally. However, terrestrial networks are facing a wide range of challenges, from coverage and reliability to interference and congestion. As the demands of the 6G era are expected to be much higher, it is crucial to address these challenges to ensure a robust and efficient communication infrastructure for the future. To address these problems, Non-terrestrial Network (NTN) has emerged to be a promising solution. NTNs are communication networks that leverage airborne (e.g., unmanned aerial vehicles) and spaceborne vehicles (e.g., satellites) to facilitate ultra-reliable communications and connectivity with high data rates and low latency over expansive regions. This article aims to provide a comprehensive survey on the utilization of network slicing, Artificial Intelligence/Machine Learning (AI/ML), and Open Radio Access Network (ORAN) to address diverse challenges of NTNs from the perspectives of both academia and industry. Particularly, we first provide an in-depth tutorial on NTN and the key enabling technologies including network slicing, AI/ML, and ORAN. Then, we provide a comprehensive survey on how network slicing and AI/ML have been leveraged to overcome the challenges that NTNs are facing. Moreover, we present how ORAN can be utilized for NTNs. Finally, we highlight important challenges, open issues, and future research directions of NTN in the 6G era.

In this work, we exploit SIM to enable transmit precoding and receiver combining in holographic multiple-input multiple-output (HMIMO) communications, and we study the achievable rate by formulating a joint optimization problem of the SIM phase shifts at both sides of the transceiver and the covariance matrix of the transmitted signal. Although reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS) is a promising technology for shaping the propagation environment, it consists of a single-layer structure within inherent limitations regarding the number of beam steering patterns. Based on the recently revolutionary technology, denoted as stacked intelligent metasurface (SIM), we propose its implementation not only on the base station (BS) side in a massive multiple-input multiple-output (mMIMO) setup but also in the intermediate space between the base station and the users to adjust the environment further as needed. For the sake of convenience, we call the former BS SIM (BSIM), and the latter channel SIM (CSIM). Hence, we achieve wave-based combining at the BS and wave-based configuration at the intermediate space. Specifically, we propose a channel estimation method with reduced overhead, being crucial for SIMassisted communications. Next, we derive the uplink sum spectral efficiency (SE) in closed form in terms of statistical channel state information (CSI). Notably, we optimize the phase shifts of both BSIM and CSIM simultaneously by using the projected gradient ascent method (PGAM). Compared to previous works on SIMs, we study the uplink transmission, a mMIMO setup, channel estimation in a single phase, a second SIM at the intermediate space, and simultaneous optimization of the two SIMs. Simulation results show the impact of various parameters on the sum SE, and demonstrate the superiority of our optimization approach compared to the alternating optimization (AO) method.

The emerging reflecting intelligent surface (RIS) technology promises to enhance the capacity of wireless communication systems via passive reflect beamforming. However, the product path loss limits its performance gains. Fully-connected (FC) active RIS, which integrates reflect-type power amplifiers into the RIS elements, has been recently introduced in response to this issue. Also, sub-connected (SC) active RIS and hybrid FC-active/passive RIS variants, which employ a limited number of reflect-type power amplifiers, have been proposed to provide energy savings. Nevertheless, their flexibility in balancing diverse capacity requirements and power consumption constraints is limited. In this direction, this study introduces novel hybrid RIS structures, wherein at least one reflecting sub-surface (RS) adopts the SC-active RIS design. The asymptotic signal-to-noise-ratio of the FC-active/passive and the proposed hybrid RIS variants is analyzed in a single-user single-input single-output setup. Furthermore, the transmit and RIS beamforming weights are jointly optimized in each scenario to maximize the energy efficiency of a hybrid RIS-aided multi-user multiple-input single-output downlink system subject to the power consumption constraints of the base station and the active RSs. Numerical simulation and analytic results highlight the performance gains of the proposed RIS designs over benchmarks, unveil non-trivial trade-offs, and provide valuable insights.

Simultaneously transmitting and reflecting \textcolor{black}{reconfigurable intelligent surface} (STAR-RIS) is a promising implementation of RIS-assisted systems that enables full-space coverage. However, STAR-RIS as well as conventional RIS suffer from the double-fading effect. Thus, in this paper, we propose the marriage of active RIS and STAR-RIS, denoted as ASTARS for massive multiple-input multiple-output (mMIMO) systems, and we focus on the energy splitting (ES) and mode switching (MS) protocols. Compared to prior literature, we consider the impact of correlated fading, and we rely our analysis on the two timescale protocol, being dependent on statistical channel state information (CSI). On this ground, we propose a channel estimation method for ASTARS with reduced overhead that accounts for its architecture. Next, we derive a \textcolor{black}{closed-form expression} for the achievable sum-rate for both types of users in the transmission and reflection regions in a unified approach with significant practical advantages such as reduced complexity and overhead, which result in a lower number of required iterations for convergence compared to an alternating optimization (AO) approach. Notably, we maximize simultaneously the amplitudes, the phase shifts, and the active amplifying coefficients of the ASTARS by applying the projected gradient ascent method (PGAM). Remarkably, the proposed optimization can be executed at every several coherence intervals that reduces the processing burden considerably. Both space and ground communications have been proven effective solutions under different perspectives in Internet of Things (IoT) networks. This paper investigates multiple-access scenarios, where plenty of IoT users are cooperatively served by a satellite in space and access points (APs) on the ground. Available users in each coherence interval are split into scheduled and unscheduled subsets to optimize limited radio resources. We compute the uplink ergodic throughput of each scheduled user under imperfect channel state information (CSI) and non-orthogonal pilot signals. As maximum-radio combining is deployed locally at the ground gateway and the APs, the uplink ergodic throughput is obtained in a closed-form expression. The analytical results explicitly unveil the effects of channel conditions and pilot contamination on each scheduled user. By maximizing the sum throughput, the system can simultaneously determine scheduled users and perform power allocation based on either a model-based approach with alternating optimization or a learning-based approach with the graph neural network. Numerical results manifest that integrated satellite-terrestrial cell-free massive multiple-input multiple-output systems can significantly improve the sum ergodic throughput over coherence intervals. The integrated systems can schedule the vast majority of users; some might be out of service due to the limited power budget.

The third generation partnership project (3GPP) has recently defined two frequency bands for direct access with satellites, which is a concrete step toward realizing the anticipated space-air-ground integrated networks. In addition, given the rapid increase in the numbers of satellites orbiting the Earth and emerging satellites applications, non-terrestrial networks (NTNs) might soon need to operate with integrated access and backhaul (IAB), which has been standardized for terrestrial networks to enable low-cost, flexible and scalable network densification. Therefore, this work investigates the performance of satellite IAB, where the same spectrum resources at a low earth orbit (LEO) satellite are utilized to provide access to a handheld user (UE) and backhaul via inter-satellite links. The UE is assumed to operate with frequency division duplex (FDD) as specified by the 3GPP, while both FDD and time division duplex (TDD) are investigated for backhauling. The regenerative capabilities of next-generation satellite systems offer a novel approach to design low earth orbit (LEO) satellite communication systems, enabling full flexibility in bandwidth and spot beam management, power control, and onboard data processing. These advancements allow the implementation of intelligent spatial multiplexing techniques, addressing the ever-increasing demand for future broadband data traffic. Existing satellite resource management solutions, however, do not fully exploit these capabilities. To address this issue, a novel framework called flexible resource management algorithm for LEO satellites (FLARE-LEO) is proposed to jointly design bandwidth, power, and spot beam coverage optimized for the geographic distribution of users. It incorporates multi-spot beam multicasting, spatial multiplexing, caching, and handover (HO). In particular, the spot beam coverage is optimized by using the unsupervised K-means algorithm applied to the realistic geographical user demands, followed by a proposed successive convex approximation (SCA)-based iterative algorithm for optimizing the radio resources. Furthermore, we propose two joint transmission architectures during the HO period, which jointly estimate the downlink channel state information (CSI) using deep learning and optimize the transmit power of the LEOs involved in the HO process to improve the overall system throughput. Simulations demonstrate superior performance in terms of delivery time reduction of the proposed algorithm over the existing solutions.

We account for correlated Rayleigh fading and multiple antennas per access point (AP), while the maximum ratio (MR) beamforming is applied for the design of the active beamforming in terms of instantaneous channel state information (CSI). Firstly, we rely on an aggregated channel estimation approach that reduces the overhead required for channel estimation while providing sufficient information for data processing. We obtain the normalized mean square error (NMSE) of the channel estimate per AP, and design the passive beamforming (PB) of the surface based on the long-time statistical CSI. Next, we derive the received signal in the asymptotic regime of numbers of APs and surface elements. Then, we obtain a closed-form expression of the downlink achievable rate for arbitrary numbers of APs and STAR-RIS elements under statistical CSI. Finally, based on the derived expressions, the numerical results show the feasibility and the advantages of deploying a STAR-RIS into conventional CF mMIMO systems. In particular, we theoretically analyze the properties of STAR-RIS-assisted CF mMIMO systems and reveal explicit insights in terms of the impact of channel correlation, the number of surface elements, and the pilot contamination on the achievable rate.

Reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS) has emerged as a cost-effective solution to improve wireless communication performance through just passive reflection. Recently, the concept of simultaneously transmitting and reflecting RIS (STAR-RIS) has appeared but the study of minimum signal-to-interference-plus-noise ratio (SINR) and the impact of hardware impairments (HWIs) remain open. In addition to previous works on STAR-RIS, we consider a massive multiple-input multiple-output (mMIMO) base station (BS) serving multiple user equipments (UEs) at both sides of the RIS. Specifically, in this work, focusing on the downlink of a single cell, we derive the minimum SINR obtained by the optimal linear precoder (OLP) with HWIs in closed form. The OLP maximises the minimum SINR subject to a given power constraint for any given passive beamforming matrix (PBM). Next, we obtain deterministic equivalents (DEs) for the OLP and the minimum SINR, which are then used to optimise the PBM. Notably, based on the DEs and statistical channel state information (CSI), we optimise simultaneously the amplitude and phase shift by using a projected gradient ascent algorithm (PGAM) for both energy splitting (ES) and mode switching (MS) STAR-RIS operation protocols with reduced feedback, \textcolor{black}{which is quite crucial for STAR-RIS systems that include the double number or variables compared to reflecting only RIS.} Simulations verify the analytical results, shed light on the impact of HWIs, and demonstrate the better performance of STAR-RIS compared to conventional RIS.

Reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS) has emerged as a cost-effective and promising solution to extend the wireless signal coverage and improve the performance via passive signal reflection. Different from existing works which do not account for the cooperation between RISs or do not provide full space coverage, we propose the marriage of cooperative double-RIS with simultaneously transmitting and reflecting RIS (STAR-RIS) technologies denoted as RIS/STAR-RIS under correlated Rayleigh fading conditions to assist the communication in a massive multiple-input multiple-output (mMIMO) setup. The proposed architecture is superior since it enjoys the benefits of the individual designs. We introduce a channel estimation approach of the cascaded channels with reduced overhead. Also, we obtain the deterministic equivalent (DE) of the downlink achievable sum spectral efficiency (SE) in closed form based on large-scale statistics. Notably, relied on statistical channel state information (CSI), we optimise both surfaces by means of the projected gradient ascent method (PGAM), and obtain the gradients in closed form. The proposed optimization achieves to maximise the sum SE of such a complex system, and has low complexity and low overhead since it can be performed at every several coherence intervals. Numerical results show the benefit of the proposed architecture and verify the analytical framework. In particular, we show that the RIS/STAR-RIS architecture outperforms the conventional double-RIS or its single-RIS counterparts.

This paper aims to develop the intelligent traffic steering (TS) framework, which has recently been considered as one of the key developments of 3GPP for advanced 5G. Since achieving key performance indicators (KPIs) for heterogeneous services may not be possible in the monolithic architecture, a novel deep reinforcement learning (DRL)-based TS algorithm is proposed at the non-real-time (non-RT) RAN intelligent controller (RIC) within the open radio access network (ORAN) architecture. To enable ORAN's intelligence, we distribute traffic load onto appropriate paths, which helps efficiently allocate resources to end users in a downlink multi-service scenario. Our proposed approach employs a three-step hierarchical process that involves heuristics, machine learning, and convex optimization to steer traffic flows. Through system-level simulations, we show the superior performance of the proposed intelligent TS scheme, surpassing established benchmark systems by 45.50%.

Further, very narrow beamwidth arising from large arrays yields high angular resolution up to milli-degree level direction-of-arrival (DoA) estimation. At THz frequencies and extremely large arrays, the signal wavefront is spherical in the near-field that renders traditional far-field DoA estimation techniques unusable. In this work, we examine near-field DoA estimation for THz automotive radar. We propose an algorithm using multiple signal classification (MUSIC) to estimate target DoAs and ranges while also taking beam-squint in near-field into account. Using an array transformation approach, we compensate for near-field beam-squint in noise subspace computations to construct the beam-squint-free MUSIC spectra. Numerical experiments show the effectiveness of the proposed method to accurately estimate the target parameters.

Satellite communications, essential for modern connectivity, extend access to maritime, aeronautical, and remote areas where terrestrial networks are unfeasible. Current GEO systems distribute power and bandwidth uniformly across beams using multi-beam footprints with fractional frequency reuse. However, recent research reveals the limitations of this approach in heterogeneous traffic scenarios, leading to inefficiencies. To address this, this paper presents a machine learning (ML)-based approach to Radio Resource Management (RRM).
We treat the RRM task as a regression ML problem, integrating RRM objectives and constraints into the loss function that the ML algorithm aims at minimizing. Moreover, we introduce a context-aware ML metric that evaluates the ML model's performance but also considers the impact of its resource allocation decisions on the overall performance of the communication system.

The goal of semantic communication is to surpass optimal Shannon's criterion regarding a notable problem for future communication which lies in the integration of collaborative efforts between the intelligence of the transmission source and the joint design of source coding and channel coding. The convergence of scholarly investigation and applicable products in the field of semantic communication is facilitated by the utilization of flexible structural hardware design, which is constrained by the computational capabilities of edge devices. This characteristic represents a significant benefit of joint source-channel coding (JSCC), as it enables the generation of source alphabets with diverse lengths and achieves a code rate of unity. Moreover, JSCC exhibits near-capacity performance while maintaining low complexity. Therefore, we leverage not only quasi-cyclic (QC) characteristics to propose a QC-LDPC code-based JSCC scheme but also Unequal Error Protection (UEP) to ensure the recovery of semantic importance. In this study, the feasibility for using a semantic encoder/decoder that is aware of UEP can be explored based on the existing JSCC system. This approach is aimed at protecting the significance of semantic task-oriented information. Additionally, the deployment of a JSCC system can be facilitated by employing Low-Density Parity-Check (LDPC) codes on a reconfigurable device. This is achieved by reconstructing the LDPC codes as QC-LDPC codes. The QC-LDPC layered decoding technique, which has been specifically optimized for hardware parallelism and tailored for channel decoding applications, can be suitably adapted to accommodate the JSCC system. The performance of the proposed system is evaluated by conducting BER measurements using both floating-point and 6-bit quantization.

Reconfigurable intelligent surfaces (RIS)-assisted massive multiple-input multiple-output (mMIMO) is a promising technology for applications in next-generation networks. However, reflecting-only RIS provides limited coverage compared to a simultaneously transmitting and reflecting RIS (STAR-RIS). Hence, in this paper, we focus on the downlink achievable rate and its optimization of a STAR-RIS-assisted mMIMO system. Contrary to previous works on STAR-RIS, we consider mMIMO, correlated fading, and multiple user equipments (UEs) at both sides of the RIS. In particular, we introduce an estimation approach of the aggregated channel with the main benefit of reduced overhead links instead of estimating the individual channels. {Next, leveraging channel hardening in mMIMO and the use-and-forget bounding technique, we obtain an achievable rate in closed-form that only depends on statistical channel state information (CSI). To optimize the amplitudes and phase shifts of the STAR-RIS, we employ a projected gradient ascent method (PGAM) that simultaneously adjusts the amplitudes and phase shifts for both energy splitting (ES) and mode switching (MS) STAR-RIS operation protocols.} By considering large-scale fading, the proposed optimization can be performed every several coherence intervals, which can significantly reduce overhead. Considering that STAR-RIS has twice the number of controllable parameters
compared to conventional reflecting-only RIS, this accomplishment offers substantial practical benefits. Simulations are carried out to verify the analytical results, reveal the interplay of the achievable rate with fundamental parameters, and show the superiority of STAR-RIS regarding its achievable rate compared to its reflecting-only counterpart.

In this paper, we present a non-coherent energy detection scheme for spatial modulation (SM) systems. In particular, the use of SM is motivated by its low-complexity implementation in comparison to multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems, achieved through the activation of a single antenna during transmission. Moreover, energy detection-based communications restrict the channel state information to the magnitude of the fading gains. This consideration makes the design applicable for low-cost low-powered devices since phase estimation and its associated circuitry are avoided. We derive an energy detection metric for a multi-antenna receiver based on the maximum-likelihood (ML) criterion. By considering a biased pulse amplitude modulation, we develop an analytical framework for the SM symbol error rate at high signal-to-noise ratios. Numerical results show that the diversity order is proportional to half the number of receive antennas; this result stems from having partial receiver channel knowledge. In addition, we compare the performance of the proposed scheme with that of the coherent ML receiver and show that the SM energy detector outperforms its coherent counterpart in certain scenarios, particularly when utilizing non-negative constellations. Ultimately, we implement an SM testbed using software-defined radio devices and provide experimental error rate measurements that validate our theoretical contribution.

Reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS) has recently gained significant interest as an emerging technology for future wireless networks thanks to its potential for improving the coverage probability in challenging propagation environments. This paper studies an RIS-assisted propagation environment, where a source transmits data to a destination in the presence of a weak direct link. We analyze and compare RIS designs based on long-term and short-term channel statistics in terms of coverage probability and ergodic rate. For the considered optimization designs, we derive closed-form expressions for the coverage probability and ergodic rate, which explicitly unveil the impact of both the propagation environment and the RIS on the system performance. Besides the optimization of the RIS phase profile, we formulate an RIS placement optimization problem with the aim of maximizing the coverage probability by relying only on partial channel state information. An efficient algorithm is proposed based on the gradient ascent method. Simulation results are illustrated in order to corroborate the analytical framework and findings. The proposed RIS phase profile is shown to outperform several heuristic benchmarks in terms of outage probability and ergodic rate. In addition, the proposed RIS placement strategy provides an extra degree of freedom that remarkably improves system performance.

Terahertz (THz) band is currently envisioned as the key building block to achieving the future sixth generation (6G) wireless systems. The ultra-wide bandwidth and very narrow beamwidth of THz systems offer the next order of magnitude in user densities and multi-functional behavior. However, wide bandwidth results in a frequency-dependent beampattern causing the beams generated at different subcarriers split and point to different directions. Furthermore, mutual coupling degrades the system's performance. This paper studies the compensation of both beam-split and mutual coupling for direction-of-arrival (DoA) estimation by modeling the beam-split and mutual coupling as an array imperfection. We propose a subspace-based approach using multiple signal classification with CalibRated for bEAam-split and Mutual coupling (CREAM-MUSIC) algorithm for this purpose. Via numerical simulations, we show the proposed CREAM-MUSIC approach accurately estimates the DoAs in the presence of beam-split and mutual coupling.

As pure optimization-based solutions have shown to be computationally tedious and to lack flexibility, machine learning (ML)-based methods have emerged as promising alternatives. We investigate the application of energy-efficient brain-inspired ML models for on-board radio resource management. Apart from software simulation, we report extensive experimental results leveraging the recently released Intel Loihi 2 chip. To benchmark the performance of the proposed model, we implement conventional convolutional neural networks (CNN) on a Xilinx Versal VCK5000, and provide a detailed comparison of accuracy, precision, recall, and energy efficiency for different traffic demands. Most notably, for relevant workloads, spiking neural networks (SNNs) implemented on Loihi 2 yield higher accuracy, while reducing power consumption by more than 100$\times$ as compared to the CNN-based reference platform. Our findings point to the significant potential of neuromorphic computing and SNNs in supporting on-board SatCom operations, paving the way for enhanced efficiency and sustainability in future SatCom systems.

Interest in the integration of Terrestrial Networks (TN) and Non-Terrestrial Networks (NTN); primarily satellites; has been rekindled due to the potential of NTN to provide ubiquitous coverage. Especially with the peculiar and flexible physical layer properties of 5G-NR, now direct access to 5G services through satellites could become possible. However, the large Round-Trip Delays (RTD) in NTNs require a re-evaluation of the design of RLC and PDCP layers timers ( and associated buffers), in particular for the regenerative payload satellites which have limited computational resources, and hence need to be optimally utilized. Our aim in this work is to initiate a new line of research for emerging NTNs with limited resources from a higher-layer perspective. To this end, we propose a novel and efficient method for optimally designing the RLC and PDCP layers' buffers and timers without the need for intensive computations. This paper investigates joint device identification, channel estimation, and signal detection for LEO satellite-enabled grant-free random access, where a multiple-input multipleoutput (MIMO) system with orthogonal time-frequency space modulation (OTFS) is utilized to combat the dynamics of the terrestrial-satellite link (TSL). We divide the receiver structure into three modules: first, a linear module for identifying active devices, which leverages the generalized approximate message passing (GAMP) algorithm to eliminate inter-user interference in the delay-Doppler domain; second, a non-linear module adopting the message passing algorithm to jointly estimate channel and detect transmit signals; the third aided by Markov random field (MRF) aims to explore the three dimensional block sparsity of channel in the delay-Doppler-angle domain. The soft information is exchanged iteratively between these three modules by careful scheduling. Furthermore, the expectation-maximization algorithm is embedded to learn the hyperparameters in prior distributions. In this paper, we tackle the problem of joint symbol level precoding (SLP) and reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS) phase shift design with constellation rotation in the finite block length regime. We aim to increase energy efficiency by minimizing the total transmit power while satisfying the quality of service constraints. The total power consumption can be significantly minimized through the exploitation of multiuser interference by symbol level precoding and by the intelligent manipulation of the propagation environment using reconfigurable intelligent surfaces. In addition, the constellation rotation per user contributes to energy efficiency by aligning the symbol phases of the users, thus improving the utilization of constructive interference. The formulated power minimization problem is non-convex and correspondingly difficult to solve directly. Hence, we employ an alternating optimization algorithm to tackle the joint optimization of SLP and RIS phase shift design. The optimal phase of each user's constellation rotation is obtained via an exhaustive search algorithm. Through Monte-Carlo simulation results, we demonstrate that the proposed solution yields substantial power minimization as compared to conventional SLP, zero forcing precoding with RIS as well as the benchmark schemes without RIS.

The ultra-secure quantum network leverages quantum cryptography to deliver unsurpassed data transfer security. In principle, the well-known quantum key distribution (QKD) achieves unconditional security, which raises concerns about the trustworthiness of 6G wireless systems in order to mitigate the gap between practice and theory. The long-distance satellite-to-ground evolving quantum network distributes keys that are ubiquitous to the node on the ground through low-orbit satellites. As the secret key sequence is encoded into quantum states, it is sent through the atmosphere via a quantum channel. It still requires more effort in the physical layer design of deployment ranges, transmission, and security to achieve high-quality quantum communication. In this paper, we first review the quantum states and channel properties for satellite-based quantum networks and long-range quantum state transfer (QST). Moreover, we highlight some challenges, such as transmissivity statistics, estimation of channel parameters and attack resilience, quantum state transfer for satellite-based quantum networks, and wavepacket shaping techniques over atmospheric channels. We underline two research directions that consider the QST and wavepacket shaping techniques for atmospheric transmission in order to encourage further research toward the next generation of satellite-based quantum networks.

We consider unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV)-enabled wireless systems where downlink communications between a multi-antenna UAV and multiple users are assisted by a hybrid active-passive reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS). We aim at a fairness design of two typical UAV-enabled networks, namely the static-UAV network where the UAV is deployed at a fixed location to serve all users at the same time, and the mobile-UAV network which employs the time division multiple access protocol. In both networks, our goal is to maximize the minimum rate among users through jointly optimizing the UAV's location/trajectory, transmit beamformer, and RIS coefficients. The resulting problems are highly nonconvex due to a strong coupling between the involved variables. We develop efficient algorithms based on block coordinate ascend and successive convex approximation to effectively solve these problems in an iterative manner. In particular, in the optimization of the mobile-UAV network, closed-form solutions to the transmit beamformer and RIS passive coefficients are derived. Numerical results show that a hybrid RIS equipped with only 4 active elements and a power budget of 0 dBm offers an improvement of 38%-63% in minimum rate, while that achieved by a passive RIS is only about 15%, with the same total number of elements.

The full-duplex (FD) technology has the potential to radically evolve wireless systems, facilitating the integration of both communications and radar functionalities into a single device, thus, enabling joint communication and sensing (JCAS). In this paper, we present a novel approach for JCAS that incorporates a reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS) in the near-field of an FD multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) node, which is jointly optimized with the digital beamformers to enable JSAC and efficiently handle self-interference (SI). We propose a novel problem formulation for FD MIMO JCAS systems to jointly minimize the total received power at the FD node's radar receiver while maximizing the sum rate of downlink communications subject to a Cramér-Rao bound (CRB) constraint. In contrast to the typically used CRB in the relevant literature, we derive a novel, more accurate, target estimation bound that fully takes into account the RIS deployment. The considered problem is solved using alternating optimization, which is guaranteed to converge to a local optimum. The simulation results demonstrate that the proposed scheme achieves significant performance improvement both for communications and sensing. It is showcased that, jointly designing the FD MIMO beamformers and the RIS phase configuration to be SI aware can significantly loosen the requirement for additional SI cancellation.

In this paper, we study a RAN resource-slicing problem for energy-efficient communication in an orthogonal frequency division multiple access (OFDMA) based millimeter-wave (mmWave) downlink (DL) network consisting of enhanced mobile broadband (eMBB) and ultra-reliable low-latency communication (URLLC) services. Specifically, assuming a fixed set of predefined beams, we address an energy efficiency (EE) maximization problem to obtain the optimal beam selection, Resource Block (RB), and transmit power allocation policy to serve URLLC and eMBB users on the same physical radio resources. The problem is formulated as a mixed-integer non-linear fractional programming (MINLFP) problem considering minimum data rate and latency in packet delivery constraints. By leveraging the properties of fractional programming theory, we first transform the formulated non-convex optimization problem in fractional form into a tractable subtractive form. Subsequently, we solve the transformed problem using a two-loop iterative algorithm. The main resource-slicing problem is solved in the inner loop utilizing the difference of convex (DC) programming and successive convex approximation (SCA) techniques. Subsequently, the outer loop is solved using the Dinkelbach method to acquire an improved solution in every iteration until it converges. Our simulation results illustrate the performance gains of the proposed methodology with respect to baseline algorithms with the fixed and mixed resource grid models.

This paper explores the transformative potential of digital twin (DT) technology in the context of non-terrestrial networks (NTNs). NTNs, encompassing both airborne and space-borne elements, present unique challenges in network control, management, and optimization. DT is a novel approach to design and manage complicated cyber-physical systems with a high degree of automation, intelligence, and resilience. The adoption of DTs within NTNs offers a dynamic and detailed virtual representation of the entire ecosystem, enabling real-time monitoring, simulations, and data-driven decision-making. This paper delves into the envisioned integration of DTs in NTNs, discussing the technical challenges and highlighting key enabling technologies. Emphasis is placed on technologies such as Internet of things (IoT), artificial intelligence (AI), space-based cloud computing, quantum computing, and others, providing a comprehensive overview of their potentials in empowering DT development for NTNs. With countless promising applications in various domains such as IoT and industry 4.0, task-oriented communication design (TOCD) is getting accelerated attention from the research community. This paper presents a novel approach for designing scalable task-oriented quantization and communications in cooperative multi-agent systems (MAS). The proposed approach utilizes the TOCD framework and the value of information (VoI) concept to enable efficient communication of quantized observations among agents while maximizing the average return performance of the MAS, a parameter that quantifies the MAS's task effectiveness. The computational complexity of learning the VoI, however, grows exponentially with the number of agents. Thus, we propose a three-step framework: i) learning the VoI (using reinforcement learning (RL)) for a two-agent system, ii) designing the quantization policy for an $N$-agent MAS using the learned VoI for a range of bit-budgets and, (iii) learning the agents' control policies using RL while following the designed quantization policies in the earlier step. We observe that one can reduce the computational cost of obtaining the value of information by exploiting insights gained from studying a similar two-agent system - instead of the original $N$-agent system. We then quantize agents' observations such that their more valuable observations are communicated more precisely. Our analytical results show the applicability of the proposed framework under a wide range of problems. Numerical results show striking improvements in reducing the computational complexity of obtaining VoI needed for the TOCD in a MAS problem without compromising the average return performance of the MAS.

Low earth orbit (LEO) satellite constellation-enabled communication networks are expected to be an important part of many Internet of Things (IoT) deployments due to their unique advantage of providing seamless global coverage. In this paper, we investigate the random access problem in massive multiple-input multiple-output-based LEO satellite systems, where the multi-satellite cooperative processing mechanism is considered. Specifically, at edge satellite nodes, we conceive a training sequence padded multi-carrier system to overcome the issue of imperfect synchronization, where the training sequence is utilized to detect the devices' activity and estimate their channels. Considering the inherent sparsity of terrestrial-satellite links and the sporadic traffic feature of IoT terminals, we utilize the orthogonal approximate message passing-multiple measurement vector algorithm to estimate the delay coefficients and user terminal activity. To further utilize the structure of the receive array, a two-dimensional estimation of signal parameters via rotational invariance technique is performed for enhancing channel estimation. Finally, at the central server node, we propose a majority voting scheme to enhance activity detection by aggregating backhaul information from multiple satellites. Moreover, multi-satellite cooperative linear data detection and multi-satellite cooperative Bayesian dequantization data detection are proposed to cope with perfect and quantized backhaul, respectively. Simulation results verify the effectiveness of our proposed schemes in terms of channel estimation, activity detection, and data detection for quasi-synchronous random access in satellite systems.

To allow flexible and cost-efficient network densification and deployment, the integrated access and backhaul (IAB) was recently standardized by the third generation partnership project (3GPP) as part of the fifth-generation new radio (5G-NR) networks. However, the current standardization only defines the IAB for the terrestrial domain, while non-terrestrial networks (NTNs) are yet to be considered for such standardization efforts. In this work, we motivate the use of IAB in NTNs, and we discuss the compatibility issues between the 3GPP specifications on IAB in 5G-NR and the satellite radio regulations. In addition, we identify the required adaptation from the 3GPP and/or satellite operators for realizing an NTN-enabled IAB operation. A case study is provided for a low earth orbit (LEO) satellite-enabled in-band IAB operation with orthogonal and non-orthogonal bandwidth allocation between access and backhauling, and under both time- and frequency-division duplex (TDD/FDD) transmission modes. Numerical results demonstrate the feasibility of IAB through satellites, and illustrate the superiority of FDD over TDD transmission. It is also shown that in the absence of precoding, non-orthogonal bandwidth allocation between the access and the backhaul can largely degrades the network throughput.

Terahertz (THz) band is expected to be one of the key enabling technologies of the sixth generation (6G) wireless networks because of its abundant available bandwidth and very narrow beam width. Due to high frequency operations, electrically small array apertures are employed, and the signal wavefront becomes spherical in the near-field. Therefore, near-field signal model should be considered for channel acquisition in THz systems. Unlike prior works which mostly ignore the impact of near-field beam-split (NB) and consider either narrowband scenario or far-field models, this paper introduces both a model-based and a model-free techniques for wideband THz channel estimation in the presence of NB. The model-based approach is based on orthogonal matching pursuit (OMP) algorithm, for which we design an NB-aware dictionary. The key idea is to exploit the angular and range deviations due to the NB. We then employ the OMP algorithm, which accounts for the deviations thereby ipso facto mitigating the effect of NB. We further introduce a federated learning (FL)-based approach as a model-free solution for channel estimation in a multi-user scenario to achieve reduced complexity and training overhead. Through numerical simulations, we demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed channel estimation techniques for wideband THz systems in comparison with the existing state-of-the-art techniques.

To enable an intelligent, programmable and multi-vendor radio access network (RAN) for 6G networks, considerable efforts have been made in standardization and development of open RAN (O-RAN). So far, however, the applicability of O-RAN in controlling and optimizing RAN functions has not been widely investigated. In this paper, we jointly optimize the flow-split distribution, congestion control and scheduling (JFCS) to enable an intelligent traffic steering application in O-RAN. Combining tools from network utility maximization and stochastic optimization, we introduce a multi-layer optimization framework that provides fast convergence, long-term utility-optimality and significant delay reduction compared to the state-of-the-art and baseline RAN approaches. Our main contributions are three-fold: i) we propose the novel JFCS framework to efficiently and adaptively direct traffic to appropriate radio units; ii) we develop low-complexity algorithms based on the reinforcement learning, inner approximation and bisection search methods to effectively solve the JFCS problem in different time scales; and iii) the rigorous theoretical performance results are analyzed to show that there exists a scaling factor to improve the tradeoff between delay and utility-optimization. Collectively, the insights in this work will open the door towards fully automated networks with enhanced control and flexibility. Numerical results are provided to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed algorithms in terms of the convergence rate, long-term utility-optimality and delay reduction.

Nevertheless, THz-band transmission faces several unique challenges, one of which is beam-split which occurs due to the usage of subcarrier-independent analog beamformers and causes the generated beams at different subcarriers split, and point to different directions. Unlike the prior works dealing with beam-split by employing additional complex hardware components, e.g., time-delayer networks, a beam-split-aware orthogonal matching pursuit (BSA-OMP) approach is introduced to efficiently estimate the THz channel and beamformer design without any additional hardware. Specifically, we design a BSA dictionary comprised of beam-split-corrected steering vectors which inherently include the effect of beam-split so that the proposed BSA-OMP solution automatically yields the beam-split-corrected physical channel directions. Numerical results demonstrate the superior performance of BSA-OMP approach against the existing state-of-the-art techniques.

We consider a task-effective quantization problem that arises when multiple agents are controlled via a centralized controller (CC). While agents have to communicate their observations to the CC for decision-making, the bit-budgeted communications of agent-CC links may limit the task-effectiveness of the system which is measured by the system's average sum of stage costs/rewards. As a result, each agent should compress/quantize its observation such that the average sum of stage costs/rewards of the control task is minimally impacted. We address the problem of maximizing the average sum of stage rewards by proposing two different Action-Based State Aggregation (ABSA) algorithms that carry out the indirect and joint design of control and communication policies in the multi-agent system. While the applicability of ABSA-1 is limited to single-agent systems, it provides an analytical framework that acts as a stepping stone to the design of ABSA-2. ABSA-2 carries out the joint design of control and communication for a multi-agent system. We evaluate the algorithms - with average return as the performance metric - using numerical experiments performed to solve a multi-agent geometric consensus problem. The numerical results are concluded by introducing a new metric that measures the effectiveness of communications in a multi-agent system.

A whole suite of innovative technologies and architectures have emerged in response to the rapid growth of wireless traffic. This paper studies an integrated network design that boosts system capacity through cooperation between wireless access points (APs) and a satellite for enhancing the network's spectral efficiency. We first mathematically derive an achievable throughput expression for the uplink (UL) data transmission over spatially correlated Rician channels. Our generic achievable throughput expression is applicable for arbitrary received signal detection techniques under realistic imperfect channel estimates. A closed-form expression is then obtained for the ergodic UL data throughput when maximum ratio combining is utilized for detecting the desired signals. As for our resource allocation contributions, we formulate the max-min fairness and total transmit power optimization problems relying on the channel statistics for performing power allocation. The solution of each optimization problem is derived in form of a low-complexity iterative design, in which each data power variable is updated relying on a closed-form expression. Our integrated hybrid network concept allows users to be served that may not otherwise be accommodated due to the excessive data demands. The algorithms proposed to allow us to address the congestion issues appearing when at least one user is served at a rate below the target. The mathematical analysis is also illustrated with the aid of our numerical results that show the added benefits of considering the space links in terms of improving the ergodic data throughput. Furthermore, the proposed algorithms smoothly circumvent any potential congestion, especially in face of high rate requirements and weak channel conditions.
