Recent advancements in Large Language Models (LLMs) have significantly extended their capabilities, evolving from basic text generation to complex, human-like interactions. In light of the possibilities that LLMs could assume significant workplace responsibilities, it becomes imminently necessary to explore LLMs' capacities as professional assistants. This study focuses on the aspect of career interests by applying the Occupation Network's Interest Profiler short form to LLMs as if they were human participants and investigates their hypothetical career interests and competence, examining how these vary with language changes and model advancements. We analyzed the answers using a general linear mixed model approach and found distinct career interest inclinations among LLMs, particularly towards the social and artistic domains. Interestingly, these preferences did not align with the occupations where LLMs exhibited higher competence. This novel approach of using psychometric instruments and sophisticated statistical tools on LLMs unveils fresh perspectives on their integration into professional environments, highlighting human-like tendencies and promoting a reevaluation of LLMs' self-perception and competency alignment in the workforce.

Existing solutions to image editing tasks suffer from several issues. Though achieving remarkably satisfying generated results, some supervised methods require huge amounts of paired training data, which greatly limits their usages. The other unsupervised methods take full advantage of large-scale pre-trained priors, thus being strictly restricted to the domains where the priors are trained on and behaving badly in out-of-distribution cases. The task we focus on is how to enable the users to customize their desired effects through only few image pairs. In our proposed framework, a novel few-shot learning mechanism based on the directional transformations among samples is introduced and expands the learnable space exponentially. Adopting a diffusion model pipeline, we redesign the condition calculating modules in our model and apply several technical improvements. Experimental results demonstrate the capabilities of our method in various cases.

The integration of intelligent reflecting surface (IRS) into over-the-air computation (AirComp) is an effective solution for reducing the computational mean squared error (MSE) via its high passive beamforming gain. Prior works on IRS aided AirComp generally rely on the full instantaneous channel state information (I-CSI), which is not applicable to large-scale systems due to its heavy signalling overhead. To address this issue, we propose a novel multi-timescale transmission protocol. In particular, the receive beamforming at the access point (AP) is pre-determined based on the static angle information and the IRS phase-shifts are optimized relying on the long-term statistical CSI. With the obtained AP receive beamforming and IRS phase-shifts, the effective low-dimensional I-CSI is exploited to determine devices' transmit power in each coherence block, thus substantially reducing the signalling overhead. Theoretical analysis unveils that the achievable MSE scales on the order of ${\cal O}\left( {K/\left( {{N^2}M} \right)} \right)$, where $M$, $N$, and $K$ are the number of AP antennas, IRS elements, and devices, respectively. We also prove that the channel-inversion power control is asymptotically optimal for large $N$, which reveals that the full power transmission policy is not needed for lowering the power consumption of energy-limited devices.

Integrating wireless sensing capabilities into base stations (BSs) has become a widespread trend in the future beyond fifth-generation (B5G)/sixth-generation (6G) wireless networks. In this paper, we investigate intelligent reflecting surface (IRS) enabled wireless localization, in which an IRS is deployed to assist a BS in locating a target in its non-line-of-sight (NLoS) region. In particular, we consider the case where the BS-IRS channel state information (CSI) is unknown. Specifically, we first propose a separate BS-IRS channel estimation scheme in which the BS operates in full-duplex mode (FDM), i.e., a portion of the BS antennas send downlink pilot signals to the IRS, while the remaining BS antennas receive the uplink pilot signals reflected by the IRS. However, we can only obtain an incomplete BS-IRS channel matrix based on our developed iterative coordinate descent-based channel estimation algorithm due to the "sign ambiguity issue". Then, we employ the multiple hypotheses testing framework to perform target localization based on the incomplete estimated channel, in which the probability of each hypothesis is updated using Bayesian inference at each cycle. Moreover, we formulate a joint BS transmit waveform and IRS phase shifts optimization problem to improve the target localization performance by maximizing the weighted sum distance between each two hypotheses. However, the objective function is essentially a quartic function of the IRS phase shift vector, thus motivating us to resort to the penalty-based method to tackle this challenge. Simulation results validate the effectiveness of our proposed target localization scheme and show that the scheme's performance can be further improved by finely designing the BS transmit waveform and IRS phase shifts intending to maximize the weighted sum distance between different hypotheses.

This paper investigates simultaneous transmission and reflection reconfigurable intelligent surface (STAR-RIS) aided physical layer security (PLS) in multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems, where the base station (BS) transmits secrecy information with the aid of STAR-RIS against multiple eavesdroppers equipped with multiple antennas. We aim to maximize the secrecy rate by jointly optimizing the active beamforming at the BS and passive beamforming at the STAR-RIS, subject to the hardware constraint for STAR-RIS. To handle the coupling variables, a minimum mean-square error (MMSE) based alternating optimization (AO) algorithm is applied. In particular, the amplitudes and phases of STAR-RIS are divided into two blocks to simplify the algorithm design. Besides, by applying the Majorization-Minimization (MM) method, we derive a closed-form expression of the STAR-RIS's phase shifts. Numerical results show that the proposed scheme significantly outperforms various benchmark schemes, especially as the number of STAR-RIS elements increases.

We propose a framework for probabilistic forecasting of dynamical systems based on generative modeling. Given observations of the system state over time, we formulate the forecasting problem as sampling from the conditional distribution of the future system state given its current state. To this end, we leverage the framework of stochastic interpolants, which facilitates the construction of a generative model between an arbitrary base distribution and the target. We design a fictitious, non-physical stochastic dynamics that takes as initial condition the current system state and produces as output a sample from the target conditional distribution in finite time and without bias. This process therefore maps a point mass centered at the current state onto a probabilistic ensemble of forecasts. We prove that the drift coefficient entering the stochastic differential equation (SDE) achieving this task is non-singular, and that it can be learned efficiently by square loss regression over the time-series data. We show that the drift and the diffusion coefficients of this SDE can be adjusted after training, and that a specific choice that minimizes the impact of the estimation error gives a Föllmer process. We highlight the utility of our approach on several complex, high-dimensional forecasting problems, including stochastically forced Navier-Stokes and video prediction on the KTH and CLEVRER datasets.

Diffusion-based models have demonstrated impressive capabilities for text-to-image generation and are expected for personalized applications of subject-driven generation, which require the generation of customized concepts with one or a few reference images. However, existing methods based on fine-tuning fail to balance the trade-off between subject learning and the maintenance of the generation capabilities of pretrained models. Moreover, other methods that utilize additional image encoders tend to lose important details of the subject due to encoding compression. To address these challenges, we propose DreamTurner, a novel method that injects reference information from coarse to fine to achieve subject-driven image generation more effectively. DreamTurner introduces a subject-encoder for coarse subject identity preservation, where the compressed general subject features are introduced through an attention layer before visual-text cross-attention. We then modify the self-attention layers within pretrained text-to-image models to self-subject-attention layers to refine the details of the target subject. The generated image queries detailed features from both the reference image and itself in self-subject-attention. It is worth emphasizing that self-subject-attention is an effective, elegant, and training-free method for maintaining the detailed features of customized subjects and can serve as a plug-and-play solution during inference. Finally, with additional subject-driven fine-tuning, DreamTurner achieves remarkable performance in subject-driven image generation, which can be controlled by a text or other conditions such as pose. Connected and automated vehicles (CAVs) have emerged as a potential solution to the future challenges of developing safe, efficient, and eco-friendly transportation systems. However, CAV control presents significant challenges, given the complexity of interconnectivity and coordination required among the vehicles. To address this, multi-agent reinforcement learning (MARL), with its notable advancements in addressing complex problems in autonomous driving, robotics, and human-vehicle interaction, has emerged as a promising tool for enhancing the capabilities of CAVs. However, there is a notable absence of current reviews on the state-of-the-art MARL algorithms in the context of CAVs. Therefore, this paper delivers a comprehensive review of the application of MARL techniques within the field of CAV control. The paper begins by introducing MARL, followed by a detailed explanation of its unique advantages in addressing complex mobility and traffic scenarios that involve multiple agents. It then presents a comprehensive survey of MARL applications on the extent of control dimensions for CAVs, covering critical and typical scenarios such as platooning control, lane-changing, and unsignalized intersections. In addition, the paper provides a comprehensive review of the prominent simulation platforms used to create reliable environments for training in MARL. Lastly, the paper examines the current challenges associated with deploying MARL within CAV control and outlines potential solutions that can effectively overcome these issues. Through this review, the study highlights the tremendous potential of MARL to enhance the performance and collaboration of CAV control in terms of safety, travel efficiency, and economy.

With the emerging environment-aware applications, ubiquitous sensing is expected to play a key role in future networks. In this paper, we study a 3-dimensional (3D) multi-target localization system where multiple intelligent reflecting surfaces (IRSs) are applied to create virtual line-of-sight (LoS) links that bypass the base station (BS) and targets. To fully unveil the fundamental limit of IRS for sensing, we first study a single-target-single-IRS case and propose a novel \textit{two-stage localization protocol} by controlling the on/off state of IRS. To be specific, in the IRS-off stage, we derive the Cramér-Rao bound (CRB) of the azimuth/elevation direction-of-arrival (DoA) of the BS-target link and design a DoA estimator based on the MUSIC algorithm. In the IRS-on stage, the CRB of the azimuth/elevation DoA of the IRS-target link is derived and a simple DoA estimator based on the on-grid IRS beam scanning method is proposed. Particularly, the impact of echo signals reflected by IRS from different paths on sensing performance is analyzed. Moreover, we prove that the single-beam of the IRS is not capable of sensing, but it can be achieved with \textit{multi-beam}. Based on the two obtained DoAs, the 3D single-target location is constructed. We then extend to the multi-target-multi-IRS case and propose an \textit{IRS-adaptive sensing protocol} by controlling the on/off state of multiple IRSs, and a multi-target localization algorithm is developed. Simulation results demonstrate the effectiveness of our scheme and show that sub-meter-level positioning accuracy can be achieved.

The growing adoption of hybrid electric vehicles (HEVs) presents a transformative opportunity for revolutionizing transportation energy systems. The shift towards electrifying transportation aims to curb environmental concerns related to fossil fuel consumption. This necessitates efficient energy management systems (EMS) to optimize energy efficiency. The evolution of EMS from HEVs to connected hybrid electric vehicles (CHEVs) represent a pivotal shift. For HEVs, EMS now confronts the intricate energy cooperation requirements of CHEVs, necessitating advanced algorithms for route optimization, charging coordination, and load distribution. Challenges persist in both domains, including optimal energy utilization for HEVs, and cooperative eco-driving control (CED) for CHEVs across diverse vehicle types. Reinforcement learning (RL) stands out as a promising tool for addressing these challenges. Specifically, within the realm of CHEVs, the application of multi-agent reinforcement learning (MARL) emerges as a powerful approach for effectively tackling the intricacies of CED control. Despite extensive research, few reviews span from individual vehicles to multi-vehicle scenarios. This review bridges the gap, highlighting challenges, advancements, and potential contributions of RL-based solutions for future sustainable transportation systems.

It is hard to test the AV's hazard response in the real world because it would involve hazards to passengers and other road users. This paper studied on virtual testing of AV on the CARLA platform and proposed a Humanoid Scenario Generation (HSG) scheme to investigate the impacts of hazardous behaviors on AV collision rates. The HSG scheme breakthrough the current limitation on the rarity and reproducibility of real scenes. By accurately capturing five prominent human driver behaviors that directly contribute to vehicle collisions in the real world, the methodology significantly enhances the realism and diversity of the simulation, as evidenced by collision rate statistics across various traffic scenarios. Thus, the modular framework allows for customization, and its seamless integration within the CARLA platform ensures compatibility with existing tools. The target sensing/localization performance is fundamentally limited by the line-of-sight link and severe signal attenuation over long distances. This paper considers a challenging scenario where the direct link between the base station (BS) and the target is blocked due to the surrounding blockages and leverages the intelligent reflecting surface (IRS) with some active sensors, termed as \textit{semi-passive IRS}, for localization. To be specific, the active sensors receive echo signals reflected by the target and apply signal processing techniques to estimate the target location. We consider the joint time-of-arrival (ToA) and direction-of-arrival (DoA) estimation for localization and derive the corresponding Cramér-Rao bound (CRB), and then a simple ToA/DoA estimator without iteration is proposed. In particular, the relationships of the CRB for ToA/DoA with the number of frames for IRS beam adjustments, number of IRS reflecting elements, and number of sensors are theoretically analyzed and demystified. Simulation results show that the proposed semi-passive IRS architecture provides sub-meter level positioning accuracy even over a long localization range from the BS to the target and also demonstrate a significant localization accuracy improvement compared to the fully passive IRS architecture.

Compared with traditional half-duplex wireless systems, the application of emerging full-duplex (FD) technology can potentially double the system capacity theoretically. However, conventional techniques for suppressing self-interference (SI) adopted in FD systems require exceedingly high power consumption and expensive hardware. In this paper, we consider employing an intelligent reflecting surface (IRS) in the proximity of an FD base station (BS) to mitigate SI for simultaneously receiving data from uplink users and transmitting information to downlink users. The objective considered is to maximize the weighted sum-rate of the system by jointly optimizing the IRS phase shifts, the BS transmit beamformers, and the transmit power of the uplink users. To visualize the role of the IRS in SI cancellation by isolating other interference, we first study a simple scenario with one downlink user and one uplink user. To address the formulated non-convex problem, a low-complexity algorithm based on successive convex approximation is proposed. For the more general case considering multiple downlink and uplink users, an efficient alternating optimization algorithm based on element-wise optimization is proposed. Numerical results demonstrate that the FD system with the proposed schemes can achieve a larger gain over the half-duplex system, and the IRS is able to achieve a balance between suppressing SI and providing beamforming gain.

Energy-based models (EBMs) are generative models inspired by statistical physics with a wide range of applications in unsupervised learning. Their performance is best measured by the cross-entropy (CE) of the model distribution relative to the data distribution. Using the CE as the objective for training is however challenging because the computation of its gradient with respect to the model parameters requires sampling the model distribution. Here we show how results for nonequilibrium thermodynamics based on Jarzynski equality together with tools from sequential Monte-Carlo sampling can be used to perform this computation efficiently and avoid the uncontrolled approximations made using the standard contrastive divergence algorithm. Specifically, we introduce a modification of the unadjusted Langevin algorithm (ULA) in which each walker acquires a weight that enables the estimation of the gradient of the cross-entropy at any step during GD, thereby bypassing sampling biases induced by slow mixing of ULA. We illustrate these results with numerical experiments on Gaussian mixture distributions as well as the MNIST dataset. We show that the proposed approach outperforms methods based on the contrastive divergence algorithm in all the considered situations.

Maintaining both path-tracking accuracy and yaw stability of distributed drive electric vehicles (DDEVs) under various driving conditions presents a significant challenge in the field of vehicle control. To address this limitation, a coordinated control strategy that integrates adaptive model predictive control (AMPC) path-tracking control and direct yaw moment control (DYC) is proposed for DDEVs. The proposed strategy, inspired by a hierarchical framework, is coordinated by the upper layer of path-tracking control and the lower layer of direct yaw moment control. Based on the linear time-varying model predictive control (LTV MPC) algorithm, the effects of prediction horizon and weight coefficients on the path-tracking accuracy and yaw stability of the vehicle are compared and analyzed first. According to the aforementioned analysis, an AMPC path-tracking controller with variable prediction horizon and weight coefficients is designed considering the vehicle speed's variation in the upper layer. The lower layer involves DYC based on the linear quadratic regulator (LQR) technique. Specifically, the intervention rule of DYC is determined by the threshold of the yaw rate error and the phase diagram of the sideslip angle. Extensive simulation experiments are conducted to evaluate the proposed coordinated control strategy under different driving conditions. The results show that, under variable speed and low adhesion conditions, the vehicle's yaw stability and path-tracking accuracy have been improved by 21.58\% and 14.43\%, respectively, compared to AMPC. Similarly, under high speed and low adhesion conditions, the vehicle's yaw stability and path-tracking accuracy have been improved by 44.30\% and 14.25\%, respectively, compared to the coordination of LTV MPC and DYC. The results indicate that the proposed adaptive path-tracking controller is effective across different speeds.

With the rapid development of autonomous driving, the attention of academia has increasingly focused on the development of anti-collision systems in emergency scenarios, which have a crucial impact on driving safety. While numerous anti-collision strategies have emerged in recent years, most of them only consider steering or braking. The dynamic and complex nature of the driving environment presents a challenge to developing robust collision avoidance algorithms in emergency scenarios. To address the complex, dynamic obstacle scene and improve lateral maneuverability, this paper establishes a multi-level decision-making obstacle avoidance framework that employs the safe distance model and integrates emergency steering and emergency braking to complete the obstacle avoidance process. This approach helps avoid the high-risk situation of vehicle instability that can result from the separation of steering and braking actions. Simulation results demonstrate that the decision-making collision avoidance logic can be applied to dynamic collision avoidance scenarios in complex traffic situations, effectively completing the obstacle avoidance task in emergency scenarios and improving the safety of autonomous driving.

The premise of this article is that a basic understanding of the composition and functioning of large language models is critically urgent. To that end, we extract a representational map of OpenAI's GPT-2 with what we articulate as two classes of deep learning code, that which pertains to the model and that which underwrites applications built around the model. We then verify this map through case studies of two popular GPT-2 applications: the text adventure game, AI Dungeon, and the language art project, This Word Does Not Exist. Such an exercise allows us to test the potential of Critical Code Studies when the object of study is deep learning code and to demonstrate the validity of code as an analytical focus for researchers in the subfields of Critical Artificial Intelligence and Critical Machine Learning Studies. More broadly, however, our work draws attention to the means by which ordinary users might interact with, and even direct, the behavior of deep learning systems, and by extension works toward demystifying some of the auratic mystery of "AI." Person counting is considered as a fundamental task in video surveillance. However, the scenario diversity in practical applications makes it difficult to exploit a single person counting model for general use. Consequently, engineers must preview the video stream and manually specify an appropriate person counting model based on the scenario of camera shot, which is time-consuming, especially for large-scale deployments. In this paper, we propose a person counting paradigm that utilizes a scenario classifier to automatically select a suitable person counting model for each captured frame. First, the input image is passed through the scenario classifier to obtain a scenario label, which is then used to allocate the frame to one of five fine-tuned models for person counting. Additionally, we present five augmentation datasets collected from different scenarios, including side-view, long-shot, top-view, customized and crowd, which are also integrated to form a scenario classification dataset containing 26323 samples. In our comparative experiments, the proposed paradigm achieves better balance than any single model on the integrated dataset, thus its generalization in various scenarios has been proved.

The recently emerging multi-mode plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV) technology is one of the pathways making contributions to decarbonization, and its energy management requires multiple-input and multipleoutput (MIMO) control. At the present, the existing methods usually decouple the MIMO control into singleoutput (MISO) control and can only achieve its local optimal performance. To optimize the multi-mode vehicle globally, this paper studies a MIMO control method for energy management of the multi-mode PHEV based on multi-agent deep reinforcement learning (MADRL). By introducing a relevance ratio, a hand-shaking strategy is proposed to enable two learning agents to work collaboratively under the MADRL framework using the deep deterministic policy gradient (DDPG) algorithm. Unified settings for the DDPG agents are obtained through a sensitivity analysis of the influencing factors to the learning performance. The optimal working mode for the hand-shaking strategy is attained through a parametric study on the relevance ratio. The advantage of the proposed energy management method is demonstrated on a software-in-the-loop testing platform. The result of the study indicates that the learning rate of the DDPG agents is the greatest influencing factor for learning performance. Using the unified DDPG settings and a relevance ratio of 0.2, the proposed MADRL system can save up to 4% energy compared to the single-agent learning system and up to 23.54% energy compared to the conventional rule-based system.

Developing intelligent energy management systems with high adaptability and superiority is necessary and significant for Hybrid Electric Vehicles (HEVs). This paper proposed an ensemble learning-based scheme based on a learning automata module (LAM) to enhance vehicle energy efficiency. Two parallel base learners following two exploration-to-exploitation ratios (E2E) methods are used to generate an optimal solution, and the final action is jointly determined by the LAM using three ensemble methods. 'Reciprocal function-based decay' (RBD) and 'Step-based decay' (SBD) are proposed respectively to generate E2E ratio trajectories based on conventional Exponential decay (EXD) functions of reinforcement learning. Furthermore, considering the different performances of three decay functions, an optimal combination with the RBD, SBD, and EXD is employed to determine the ultimate action. Experiments are carried out in software-in-loop (SiL) and hardware-in-the-loop (HiL) to validate the potential performance of energy-saving under four predefined cycles. The SiL test demonstrates that the ensemble learning system with an optimal combination can achieve 1.09$\%$ higher vehicle energy efficiency than a single Q-learning strategy with the EXD function. In the HiL test, the ensemble learning system with an optimal combination can save more than 1.04$\%$ in the predefined real-world driving condition than the single Q-learning scheme based on the EXD function.

Vehicle control is one of the most critical challenges in autonomous vehicles (AVs) and connected and automated vehicles (CAVs), and it is paramount in vehicle safety, passenger comfort, transportation efficiency, and energy saving. This survey attempts to provide a comprehensive and thorough overview of the current state of vehicle control technology, focusing on the evolution from vehicle state estimation and trajectory tracking control in AVs at the microscopic level to collaborative control in CAVs at the macroscopic level. First, this review starts with vehicle key state estimation, specifically vehicle sideslip angle, which is the most pivotal state for vehicle trajectory control, to discuss representative approaches. Then, we present symbolic vehicle trajectory tracking control approaches for AVs. On top of that, we further review the collaborative control frameworks for CAVs and corresponding applications. Finally, this survey concludes with a discussion of future research directions and the challenges. This survey aims to provide a contextualized and in-depth look at state of the art in vehicle control for AVs and CAVs, identifying critical areas of focus and pointing out the potential areas for further exploration.

Exemplar-based image translation refers to the task of generating images with the desired style, while conditioning on certain input image. Most of the current methods learn the correspondence between two input domains and lack the mining of information within the domains. In this paper, we propose a more general learning approach by considering two domain features as a whole and learning both inter-domain correspondence and intra-domain potential information interactions. Specifically, we propose a Cross-domain Feature Fusion Transformer (CFFT) to learn inter- and intra-domain feature fusion. Based on CFFT, the proposed CFFT-GAN works well on exemplar-based image translation. Moreover, CFFT-GAN is able to decouple and fuse features from multiple domains by cascading CFFT modules. We conduct rich quantitative and qualitative experiments on several image translation tasks, and the results demonstrate the superiority of our approach compared to state-of-the-art methods. Ablation studies show the importance of our proposed CFFT. Application experimental results reflect the potential of our method.

The StyleGAN family succeed in high-fidelity image generation and allow for flexible and plausible editing of generated images by manipulating the semantic-rich latent style space. However, projecting a real image into its latent space encounters an inherent trade-off between inversion quality and editability. Existing encoder-based or optimization-based StyleGAN inversion methods attempt to mitigate the trade-off but see limited performance. To fundamentally resolve this problem, we propose a novel two-phase framework by designating two separate networks to tackle editing and reconstruction respectively, instead of balancing the two. Specifically, in Phase I, a W-space-oriented StyleGAN inversion network is trained and used to perform image inversion and editing, which assures the editability but sacrifices reconstruction quality. In Phase II, a carefully designed rectifying network is utilized to rectify the inversion errors and perform ideal reconstruction. Experimental results show that our approach yields near-perfect reconstructions without sacrificing the editability, thus allowing accurate manipulation of real images. Further, we evaluate the performance of our rectifying network, and see great generalizability towards unseen manipulation types and out-of-domain images.

Image-based head swapping task aims to stitch a source head to another source body flawlessly. This seldom-studied task faces two major challenges: 1) Preserving the head and body from various sources while generating a seamless transition region. 2) No paired head swapping dataset and benchmark so far. In this paper, we propose a semantic-mixing diffusion model for head swapping (HS-Diffusion) which consists of a latent diffusion model (LDM) and a semantic layout generator. We blend the semantic layouts of source head and source body, and then inpaint the transition region by the semantic layout generator, achieving a coarse-grained head swapping. Semantic-mixing LDM can further implement a fine-grained head swapping with the inpainted layout as condition by a progressive fusion process, while preserving head and body with high-quality reconstruction. To this end, we propose a semantic calibration strategy for natural inpainting and a neck alignment for geometric realism. Importantly, we construct a new image-based head swapping benchmark and design two tailor-designed metrics (Mask-FID and Focal-FID). Extensive experiments demonstrate the superiority of our framework. The code will be available: https://github.com/qinghew/HS-Diffusion.

This paper studies a communication-centric integrated sensing and communication (ISAC) system, where a multi-antenna base station (BS) simultaneously performs downlink communication and target detection. A novel target detection and information transmission protocol is proposed, where the BS executes the channel estimation and beamforming successively and meanwhile jointly exploits the pilot sequences in the channel estimation stage and user information in the transmission stage to assist target detection. We investigate the joint design of pilot matrix, training duration, and transmit beamforming to maximize the probability of target detection, subject to the minimum achievable rate required by the user. However, designing the optimal pilot matrix is rather challenging since there is no closed-form expression of the detection probability with respect to the pilot matrix. To tackle this difficulty, we resort to designing the pilot matrix based on the information-theoretic criterion to maximize the mutual information (MI) between the received observations and BS-target channel coefficients for target detection. We first derive the optimal pilot matrix for both channel estimation and target detection, and then propose an unified pilot matrix structure to balance minimizing the channel estimation error (MSE) and maximizing MI. Based on the proposed structure, a low-complexity successive refinement algorithm is proposed. Simulation results demonstrate that the proposed pilot matrix structure can well balance the MSE-MI and the Rate-MI tradeoffs, and show the significant region improvement of our proposed design as compared to other benchmark schemes. Furthermore, it is unveiled that as the communication channel is more correlated, the Rate-MI region can be further enlarged.

In this paper, an intelligent reflecting surface (IRS) is leveraged to enhance the physical layer security of an integrated sensing and communication (ISAC) system in which the IRS is deployed to not only assist the downlink communication for multiple users, but also create a virtual line-of-sight (LoS) link for target sensing. In particular, we consider a challenging scenario where the target may be a suspicious eavesdropper that potentially intercepts the communication-user information transmitted by the base station (BS). We investigate the joint design of the phase shifts at the IRS and the communication as well as radar beamformers at the BS to maximize the sensing beampattern gain towards the target, subject to the maximum information leakage to the eavesdropping target and the minimum signal-to-interference-plus-noise ratio (SINR) required by users. Based on the availability of perfect channel state information (CSI) of all involved user links and the accurate target location at the BS, two scenarios are considered and two different optimization algorithms are proposed. For the ideal scenario where the CSI of the user links and the target location are perfectly known at the BS, a penalty-based algorithm is proposed to obtain a high-quality solution. In particular, the beamformers are obtained with a semi-closed-form solution using Lagrange duality and the IRS phase shifts are solved for in closed form by applying the majorization-minimization (MM) method. On the other hand, for the more practical scenario where the CSI is imperfect and the target location is uncertain, a robust algorithm based on the $\cal S$-procedure and sign-definiteness approaches is proposed. Simulation results demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed scheme in achieving a trade-off between the communication quality and the sensing quality.

Intelligent reflecting surface (IRS) is a promising technology to boost the efficiency of wireless energy transfer (WET) systems. However, for a multiuser WET system, simultaneous multi-beam energy transmission is generally required to achieve the maximum performance, which may not be implemented by using the IRS having only a single set of coefficients. As a result, it remains unknowns how to exploit the IRS to approach such a performance upper bound. To answer this question, we aim to maximize the total harvested energy of a multiuser WET system subject to the user fairness constraints and the non-linear energy harvesting model. We first consider the static IRS beamforming scheme, which shows that the optimal IRS reflection matrix obtained by applying semidefinite relaxation is indeed of high rank in general as the number of energy receivers (ERs) increases, due to which the resulting rank-one solution by applying Gaussian Randomization may lead to significant loss. To achieve the multi-beam gain, we then propose a general time-division based novel framework by exploiting the IRS's dynamic passive beamforming. Moreover, it is able to achieve a good balance between the system performance and complexity by controlling the number of IRS shift patterns. Finally, we also propose a time-division multiple access (TDMA) based passive beamforming design for performance comparison. Simulation results demonstrate the necessity of multi-beam transmission and the superiority of the proposed dynamic IRS beamforming scheme over existing schemes.

In this paper, we study an intelligent reflecting surface (IRS)-aided radar-communication (Radcom) system, where the IRS is leveraged to help Radcom base station (BS) transmit the joint of communication signals and radar signals for serving communication users and tracking targets simultaneously. The objective of this paper is to minimize the total transmit power at the Radcom BS by jointly optimizing the active beamformers, including communication beamformers and radar beamformers, at the Radcom BS and the phase shifts at the IRS, subject to the minimum signal-to-interference-plus-noise ratio (SINR) required by communication users, the minimum SINR required by the radar, and the cross-correlation pattern design. In particular, we consider two cases, namely, case I and case II, based on the presence or absence of the radar cross-correlation design and the interference introduced by the IRS on the Radcom BS. For case I where the cross correlation design and the interference are not considered, we prove that the dedicated radar signals are not needed, which significantly reduces implementation complexity and simplifies algorithm design. Then, a penalty-based algorithm is proposed to solve the resulting non-convex optimization problem. Whereas for case II considering the cross-correlation design and the interference, we unveil that the dedicated radar signals are needed in general to enhance the system performance. Since the resulting optimization problem is more challenging to solve as compared with the case I, the semidefinite relaxation (SDR) based alternating optimization (AO) algorithm is proposed. Simulation results demonstrate the effectiveness of proposed algorithms and also show the superiority of the proposed scheme over various benchmark schemes.

The urban transportation system is a combination of multiple transport modes, and the interdependencies across those modes exist. This means that the travel demand across different travel modes could be correlated as one mode may receive demand from or create demand for another mode, not to mention natural correlations between different demand time series due to general demand flow patterns across the network. It is expectable that cross-modal ripple effects become more prevalent, with Mobility as a Service. Therefore, by propagating demand data across modes, a better demand prediction could be obtained. To this end, this study explores various machine learning models and transfer learning strategies for cross-modal demand prediction. The trip data of bike-share, metro, and taxi are processed as the station-level passenger flows, and then the proposed prediction method is tested in the large-scale case studies of Nanjing and Chicago. The results suggest that prediction models with transfer learning perform better than unimodal prediction models. Furthermore, stacked Long Short-Term Memory model performs particularly well in cross-modal demand prediction. These results verify our combined method's forecasting improvement over existing benchmarks and demonstrate the good transferability for cross-modal demand prediction in multiple cities.

Device-to-device (D2D) links scheduling for avoiding excessive interference is critical to the success of wireless D2D communications. Most of the traditional scheduling schemes only consider the maximum throughput or fairness of the system and do not consider the freshness of information. In this paper, we propose a novel D2D links scheduling scheme to optimize an age of information (AoI) and throughput jointly scheduling problem when D2D links transmit packets under the last-come-first-serve policy with packet-replacement (LCFS-PR). It is motivated by the fact that the maximum throughput scheduling may reduce the activation probability of links with poor channel conditions, which results in terrible AoI performance. Specifically, We derive the expression of the overall average AoI and throughput of the network under the spatio-temporal interfering queue dynamics with the mean-field assumption. Moreover, a neural network structure is proposed to learn the mapping from the geographic location to the optimal scheduling parameters under a stationary randomized policy, where the scheduling decision can be made without estimating the channel state information(CSI) after the neural network is well-trained. To overcome the problem that implicit loss functions cannot be back-propagated, we derive a numerical solution of the gradient. Finally, numerical results reveal that the performance of the deep learning approach is close to that of a local optimal algorithm which has a higher computational complexity. The trade-off curve of AoI and throughput is also obtained, where the AoI tends to infinity when throughput is maximized.

This paper studies an intelligent reflecting surface (IRS)-aided multiple-input-multiple-output (MIMO) full-duplex (FD) wireless-powered communication network (WPCN), where a hybrid access point (HAP) operating in FD broadcasts energy signals to multiple devices for their energy harvesting (EH) in the downlink (DL) and meanwhile receives information signals from devices in the uplink (UL) with the help of an IRS. Taking into account the practical finite self-interference (SI) and the non-linear EH model, we formulate the weighted sum throughput maximization optimization problem by jointly optimizing DL/UL time allocation, precoding matrices at devices, transmit covariance matrices at the HAP, and phase shifts at the IRS. Since the resulting optimization problem is non-convex, there are no standard methods to solve it optimally in general. To tackle this challenge, we first propose an element-wise (EW) based algorithm, where each IRS phase shift is alternately optimized in an iterative manner. To reduce the computational complexity, a minimum mean-square error (MMSE) based algorithm is proposed, where we transform the original problem into an equivalent form based on the MMSE method, which facilities the design of an efficient iterative algorithm. In particular, the IRS phase shift optimization problem is recast as an second-order cone program (SOCP), where all the IRS phase shifts are simultaneously optimized. For comparison, we also study two suboptimal IRS beamforming configurations in simulations, namely partially dynamic IRS beamforming (PDBF) and static IRS beamforming (SBF), which strike a balance between the system performance and practical complexity.

Our task is to remove all facial parts (e.g., eyebrows, eyes, mouth and nose), and then impose visual elements onto the ``blank'' face for augmented reality. Conventional object removal methods rely on image inpainting techniques (e.g., EdgeConnect, HiFill) that are trained in a self-supervised manner with randomly manipulated image pairs. Specifically, given a set of natural images, randomly masked images are used as inputs and the raw images are treated as ground truths. Whereas, this technique does not satisfy the requirements of facial parts removal, as it is hard to obtain ``ground-truth'' images with real ``blank'' faces. To address this issue, we propose a novel data generation technique to produce paired training data that well mimic the ``blank'' faces. In the mean time, we propose a novel network architecture for improved inpainting quality for our task. The semantic controllability of StyleGAN is enhanced by unremitting research. Although the existing weak supervision methods work well in manipulating the style codes along one attribute, the accuracy of manipulating multiple attributes is neglected. Multi-attribute representations are prone to entanglement in the StyleGAN latent space, while sequential editing leads to error accumulation. To address these limitations, we design a Dynamic Style Manipulation Network (DyStyle) whose structure and parameters vary by input samples, to perform nonlinear and adaptive manipulation of latent codes for flexible and precise attribute control. In order to efficient and stable optimization of the DyStyle network, we propose a Dynamic Multi-Attribute Contrastive Learning (DmaCL) method: including dynamic multi-attribute contrastor and dynamic multi-attribute contrastive loss, which simultaneously disentangle a variety of attributes from the generative image and latent space of model. As a result, our approach demonstrates fine-grained disentangled edits along multiple numeric and binary attributes. Qualitative and quantitative comparisons with existing style manipulation methods verify the superiority of our method in terms of the multi-attribute control accuracy and identity preservation without compromising photorealism.

This paper studies intelligent reflecting surface (IRS)-aided full-duplex (FD) wireless-powered communication network (WPCN), where a hybrid access point (HAP) broadcasts energy signals to multiple devices for their energy harvesting in the downlink (DL) and meanwhile receives information signals in the uplink (UL) with the help of IRS. Particularly, we propose three types of IRS beamforming configurations to strike a balance between the system performance and signaling overhead as well as implementation complexity. We first propose the fully dynamic IRS beamforming, where the IRS phase-shift vectors vary with each time slot for both DL wireless energy transfer (WET) and UL wireless information transmission (WIT). To further reduce signaling overhead and implementation complexity, we then study two special cases, namely, partially dynamic IRS beamforming and static IRS beamforming. For the former case, two different phase-shift vectors can be exploited for the DL WET and the UL WIT, respectively, whereas for the latter case, the same phase-shift vector needs to be applied for both DL and UL transmissions. We aim to maximize the system throughput by jointly optimizing the time allocation, HAP transmit power, and IRS phase shifts for the above three cases. Two efficient algorithms based on alternating optimization and penalty-based algorithms are respectively proposed for both perfect self-interference cancellation (SIC) case and imperfect SIC case by applying successive convex approximation and difference-of-convex optimization techniques. Simulation results demonstrate the benefits of IRS for enhancing the performance of FD-WPCN, and also show that the IRS-aided FD-WPCN is able to achieve significantly performance gain compared to its counterpart with half-duplex when the self-interference (SI) is properly suppressed.

By exploiting the superiority of non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA), NOMA-aided mobile edge computing (MEC) can provide scalable and low-latency computing services for the Internet of Things. However, given the prevalent stochasticity of wireless networks and sophisticated signal processing of NOMA, it is critical but challenging to design an efficient task offloading algorithm for NOMA-aided MEC, especially under a large number of devices. This paper presents an online algorithm that jointly optimizes offloading decisions and resource allocation to maximize the long-term system utility (i.e., a measure of throughput and fairness). Since the optimization variables are temporary coupled, we first apply Lyapunov technique to decouple the long-term stochastic optimization into a series of per-slot deterministic subproblems, which does not require any prior knowledge of network dynamics. Second, we propose to transform the non-convex per-slot subproblem of optimizing NOMA power allocation equivalently to a convex form by introducing a set of auxiliary variables, whereby the time-complexity is reduced from the exponential complexity to $\mathcal{O} (M^{3/2})$. The proposed algorithm is proved to be asymptotically optimal, even under partial knowledge of the device states at the base station. Simulation results validate the superiority of the proposed algorithm in terms of system utility, stability improvement, and the overhead reduction.

This paper investigates a novel intelligent reflecting surface (IRS)-based symbiotic radio (SR) system architecture consisting of a transmitter, an IRS, and an information receiver (IR). The primary transmitter communicates with the IR and at the same time assists the IRS in forwarding information to the IR. Based on the IRS's symbol period, we distinguish two scenarios, namely, commensal SR (CSR) and parasitic SR (PSR), where two different techniques for decoding the IRS signals at the IR are employed. We formulate bit error rate (BER) minimization problems for both scenarios by jointly optimizing the active beamformer at the base station and the phase shifts at the IRS, subject to a minimum primary rate requirement. Specifically, for the CSR scenario, a penalty-based algorithm is proposed to obtain a high-quality solution, where semi-closed-form solutions for the active beamformer and the IRS phase shifts are derived based on Lagrange duality and Majorization-Minimization methods, respectively. For the PSR scenario, we apply a bisection search-based method, successive convex approximation, and difference of convex programming to develop a computationally efficient algorithm, which converges to a locally optimal solution. Simulation results demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed algorithms and show that the proposed SR techniques are able to achieve a lower BER than benchmark schemes.

Cell-free network is considered as a promising architecture for satisfying more demands of future wireless networks, where distributed access points coordinate with an edge cloud processor to jointly provide service to a smaller number of user equipments in a compact area. In this paper, the problem of uplink beamforming design is investigated for maximizing the long-term energy efficiency (EE) with the aid of deep reinforcement learning (DRL) in the cell-free network. Firstly, based on the minimum mean square error channel estimation and exploiting successive interference cancellation for signal detection, the expression of signal to interference plus noise ratio (SINR) is derived. Secondly, according to the formulation of SINR, we define the long-term EE, which is a function of beamforming matrix. Thirdly, to address the dynamic beamforming design with continuous state and action space, a DRL-enabled beamforming design is proposed based on deep deterministic policy gradient (DDPG) algorithm by taking the advantage of its double-network architecture. Finally, the results of simulation indicate that the DDPG-based beamforming design is capable of converging to the optimal EE performance. Furthermore, the influence of hyper-parameters on the EE performance of the DDPG-based beamforming design is investigated, and it is demonstrated that an appropriate discount factor and hidden layers size can facilitate the EE performance.

This paper investigates the problem of resource allocation for joint communication and radar sensing system on rate-splitting multiple access (RSMA) based unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) system. UAV simultaneously communicates with multiple users and probes signals to targets of interest to exploit cooperative sensing ability and achieve substantial gains in size, cost and power consumption. By virtue of using linearly precoded rate splitting at the transmitter and successive interference cancellation at the receivers, RSMA is introduced as a promising paradigm to manage interference as well as enhance spectrum and energy efficiency. To maximize the energy efficiency of UAV networks, the deployment location and the beamforming matrix are jointly optimized under the constraints of power budget, transmission rate and approximation error. To solve the formulated non-convex problem efficiently, we decompose it into the UAV deployment subproblem and the beamforming optimization subproblem. Then, we invoke the successive convex approximation and difference-of-convex programming as well as Dinkelbach methods to transform the intractable subproblems into convex ones at each iteration. Next, an alternating algorithm is designed to solve the non-linear and non-convex problem in an efficient manner, while the corresponding complexity is analyzed as well. Finally, simulation results reveal that proposed algorithm with RSMA is superior to orthogonal multiple access and power-domain non-orthogonal multiple access in terms of power consumption and energy efficiency.

In this letter, we study the secure communication problem in the unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) enabled networks aided by an intelligent reflecting surface (IRS) from the physical-layer security perspective.
Specifically, the IRS is deployed to assist the wireless transmission from the UAV to the ground user in the presence of an eavesdropper.
The objective of this work is to maximize the secrecy rate by jointly optimizing the phase shifts at the IRS as well as the transmit power and location of the UAV.
However, the formulated problem is difficult to solve directly due to the non-linear and non-convex objective function and constraints.
By invoking fractional programming and successive convex approximation techniques, the original problem is decomposed into three subproblems, which are then transformed into convex ones. Next, a low-complexity alternating algorithm is proposed to solve the challenging non-convex problem effectively, where the closed-form expressions for transmit power and phase shifts are obtained at each iteration.
Simulations results demonstrate that the designed algorithm for IRS-aided UAV communications can achieve higher secrecy rate than benchmarks.

This paper investigates a symbiotic unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV)-assisted intelligent reflecting surface (IRS) radio system, where the UAV is leveraged to help the IRS reflect its own signals to the base station, and meanwhile enhance the UAV transmission by passive beamforming at the IRS. First, we consider the weighted sum bit error rate (BER) minimization problem among all IRSs by jointly optimizing the UAV trajectory, IRS phase shift matrix, and IRS scheduling, subject to the minimum primary rate requirements. To tackle this complicated problem, a relaxation-based algorithm is proposed. We prove that the converged relaxation scheduling variables are binary, which means that no reconstruct strategy is needed, and thus the UAV rate constraints are automatically satisfied. Second, we consider the fairness BER optimization problem. We find that the relaxation-based method cannot solve this fairness BER problem since the minimum primary rate requirements may not be satisfied by the binary reconstruction operation. To address this issue, we first transform the binary constraints into a series of equivalent equality constraints. Then, a penalty-based algorithm is proposed to obtain a suboptimal solution. Numerical results are provided to evaluate the performance of the proposed designs under different setups, as compared with benchmarks.

This paper investigates intelligent reflecting surface (IRS)-aided multicell wireless networks, where an IRS is deployed to assist the joint processing coordinated multipoint (JP-CoMP) transmission from multiple base stations (BSs) to multiple cell-edge users. By taking into account the fairness among cell-edge users, we aim at maximizing the minimum achievable rate of cell-edge users by jointly optimizing the transmit beamforming at the BSs and the phase shifts at the IRS. As a compromise approach, we transform the non-convex max-min problem into an equivalent form based on the mean-square error method, which facilities the design of an efficient suboptimal iterative algorithm. In addition, we investigate two scenarios, namely the single-user system and the multiuser system. For the former scenario, the optimal transmit beamforming is obtained based on the dual subgradient method, while the phase shift matrix is optimized based on the Majorization-Minimization method. For the latter scenario, the transmit beamforming matrix and phase shift matrix are obtained by the second-order cone programming and semidefinite relaxation techniques, respectively. Numerical results demonstrate the significant performance improvement achieved by deploying an IRS. Furthermore, the proposed JP-CoMP design significantly outperforms the conventional coordinated scheduling/coordinated beamforming coordinated multipoint (CS/CB-CoMP) design in terms of max-min rate.

The instability is shown in the existing methods of representation learning based on Euclidean distance under a broad set of conditions. Furthermore, the scarcity and high cost of labels prompt us to explore more expressive representation learning methods which depends on the labels as few as possible. To address these issues, the small-perturbation ideology is firstly introduced on the representation learning model based on the representation probability distribution. The positive small-perturbation information (SPI) which only depend on two labels of each cluster is used to stimulate the representation probability distribution and then two variant models are proposed to fine-tune the expected representation distribution of RBM, namely, Micro-supervised Disturbance GRBM (Micro-DGRBM) and Micro-supervised Disturbance RBM (Micro-DRBM) models. The Kullback-Leibler (KL) divergence of SPI is minimized in the same cluster to promote the representation probability distributions to become more similar in Contrastive Divergence(CD) learning. In contrast, the KL divergence of SPI is maximized in the different clusters to enforce the representation probability distributions to become more dissimilar in CD learning. To explore the representation learning capability under the continuous stimulation of the SPI, we present a deep Micro-supervised Disturbance Learning (Micro-DL) framework based on the Micro-DGRBM and Micro-DRBM models and compare it with a similar deep structure which has not any external stimulation. Experimental results demonstrate that the proposed deep Micro-DL architecture shows better performance in comparison to the baseline method, the most related shallow models and deep frameworks for clustering.

In this paper, we investigate the unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV)-aided simultaneous uplink and downlink transmission networks, where one UAV acting as a disseminator is connected to multiple access points, and the other UAV acting as a base station (BS) collects data from numerous sensor nodes. The goal of this paper is to maximize the sum of the UAV-BS and UAV-AP system throughput by jointly optimizing the 3D UAV trajectory, communication scheduling, and UAV-AP/SN transmit power. We first consider a special case where the UAV-BS and UAV-AP trajectories are pre-determined. Although the resulting problem is an integer and non-convex optimization problem, a globally optimal solution is obtained by applying the polyblock outer approximation (POA) method based on the problem's hidden monotonic structure. Subsequently, for the general case considering the 3D UAV trajectory optimization, an efficient iterative algorithm is proposed to alternately optimize the divided sub-problem based on the successive convex approximation (SCA) technique. Numerical results demonstrate that the proposed design is able to achieve significant system throughput gain over the benchmarks. In addition, the SCA-based method can achieve nearly the same performance as the POA based method with much lower computational complexity.

Specifically, multiple source UAVs (SUAVs) send confidential information to multiple legitimate ground users and in the meantime multiple jamming UAVs (JUAVs) cooperatively transmit interference signals to multiple eavesdroppers in order to improve the legitimate users' achievable secrecy rate. By taking into account the limited energy budget of UAV, our goal is to maximize the system secrecy energy efficiency (SEE), namely the achievable secrecy rate per energy consumption unit, by jointly optimizing the UAV trajectory, transmit power and user scheduling under the constraints of UAV mobility as well as the maximum transmit power. This paper investigates unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV)-aided backscatter communication (BackCom) networks, where the UAV is leveraged to help the backscatter device (BD) forward signals to the receiver. Based on the presence or absence of a direct link between BD and receiver, two protocols, namely transmit-backscatter (TB) protocol and transmit-backscatter-relay (TBR) protocol, are proposed to utilize the UAV to assist the BD. In particular, we formulate the system throughput maximization problems for the two protocols by jointly optimizing the time allocation, reflection coefficient and UAV trajectory. Different static/dynamic circuit power consumption models for the two protocols are analyzed. The resulting optimization problems are shown to be non-convex, which are challenging to solve. We first consider the dynamic circuit power consumption model, and decompose the original problems into three sub-problems, namely time allocation optimization with fixed UAV trajectory and reflection coefficient, reflection coefficient optimization with fixed UAV trajectory and time allocation, and UAV trajectory optimization with fixed reflection coefficient and time allocation. Then, an efficient iterative algorithm is proposed for both protocols by leveraging the block coordinate descent method and successive convex approximation (SCA) techniques. In addition, for the static circuit power consumption model, we obtain the optimal time allocation with a given reflection coefficient and UAV trajectory and the optimal reflection coefficient with low computational complexity by using the Lagrangian dual method. Simulation results show that the proposed protocols are able to achieve significant throughput gains over the compared benchmarks.
