With the rapid development of Artificial Intelligent Internet of Things (AIoT), the image data from AIoT devices has been witnessing the explosive increasing. In this paper, a novel deep image semantic communication model is proposed for the efficient image communication in AIoT. Particularly, at the transmitter side, a high-precision image semantic segmentation algorithm is proposed to extract the semantic information of the image to achieve significant compression of the image data. At the receiver side, a semantic image restoration algorithm based on Generative Adversarial Network (GAN) is proposed to convert the semantic image to a real scene image with detailed information. Simulation results demonstrate that the proposed image semantic communication model can improve the image compression ratio and recovery accuracy by 71.93% and 25.07% on average in comparison with WebP and CycleGAN, respectively. More importantly, our demo experiment shows that the proposed model reduces the total delay by 95.26% in the image communication, when comparing with the original image transmission.

In this paper, we propose a digital twin (DT)-assisted resource demand prediction scheme to enhance prediction accuracy for multicast short video streaming. Particularly, we construct user DTs (UDTs) for collecting real-time user status, including channel condition, location, watching duration, and preference. A reinforcement learning-empowered K-means++ algorithm is developed to cluster users based on the collected user status in UDTs, which can effectively employ the mined users' intrinsic correlation to improve the accuracy of user clustering. We then analyze users' video watching duration and preferences in each multicast group to obtain the swiping probability distribution and recommended videos, respectively. The obtained information is utilized to predict radio and computing resource demand of each multicast group. Initial results demonstrate that the proposed scheme can effectively abstract multicast groups' swiping probability distributions for accurate resource demand prediction.

As the Metaverse continues to grow, the need for efficient communication and intelligent content generation becomes increasingly important. Semantic communication focuses on conveying meaning and understanding from user inputs, while AI-Generated Content utilizes artificial intelligence to create digital content and experiences. Integrated Semantic Communication and AI-Generated Content (ISGC) has attracted a lot of attentions recently, which transfers semantic information from user inputs, generates digital content, and renders graphics for Metaverse. In this paper, we introduce a unified framework that captures ISGC two primary benefits, including integration gain for optimized resource allocation and coordination gain for goal-oriented high-quality content generation to improve immersion from both communication and content perspectives. We also classify existing ISGC solutions, analyze the major components of ISGC, and present several use cases. We then construct a case study based on the diffusion model to identify an optimal resource allocation strategy for performing semantic extraction, content generation, and graphic rendering in the Metaverse. Finally, we discuss several open research issues, encouraging further exploring the potential of ISGC and its related applications in the Metaverse.

As the Metaverse is iteratively being defined, its potential to unleash the next wave of digital disruption and create real-life value becomes increasingly clear. With distinctive features of immersive experience, simultaneous interactivity, and user agency, the Metaverse has the capability to transform all walks of life. However, the enabling technologies of the Metaverse, i.e., digital twin, artificial intelligence, blockchain, and extended reality, are known to be energy-hungry, therefore raising concerns about the sustainability of its large-scale deployment and development. This article proposes Green Metaverse Networking for the first time to optimize energy efficiencies of all network components for Metaverse sustainable development. We first analyze energy consumption, efficiency, and sustainability of energy-intensive technologies in the Metaverse. Next, focusing on computation and networking, we present major advancements related to energy efficiency and their integration into the Metaverse. A case study of energy conservation by incorporating semantic communication and stochastic resource allocation in the Metaverse is presented. Finally, we outline the critical challenges of Metaverse sustainable development, thereby indicating potential directions of future research towards the green Metaverse.

Web 3.0 enables user-generated contents and user-selected authorities. With decentralized wireless edge computing architectures, Web 3.0 allows users to read, write, and own contents. A core technology that enables Web 3.0 goals is blockchain, which provides security services by recording content in a decentralized and transparent manner. However, the explosion of on-chain recorded contents and the fast-growing number of users cause increasingly unaffordable computing and storage resource consumption. A promising paradigm is to analyze the semantic information of contents that can convey precisely the desired meanings without consuming many resources. In this article, we propose a unified blockchain-semantic ecosystems framework for wireless edge intelligence-enabled Web 3.0. Our framework consists of six key components to exchange semantic demands. We then introduce an Oracle-based proof of semantic mechanism to implement on-chain and off-chain interactions of Web 3.0 ecosystems on semantic verification algorithms while maintaining service security. An adaptive Deep Reinforcement Learning-based sharding mechanism on Oracle is designed to improve interaction efficiency, which can facilitate Web 3.0 ecosystems to deal with varied semantic demands. Finally, a case study is presented to show that the proposed framework can dynamically adjust Oracle settings according to varied semantic demands.

Increasing privacy and security concerns in intelligence-native 6G networks require quantum key distribution-secured semantic information communication (QKD-SIC). In QKD-SIC systems, edge devices connected via quantum channels can efficiently encrypt semantic information from the semantic source, and securely transmit the encrypted semantic information to the semantic destination. In this paper, we consider an efficient resource (i.e., QKD and KM wavelengths) sharing problem to support QKD-SIC systems under the uncertainty of semantic information generated by edge devices. In such a system, QKD service providers offer QKD services with different subscription options to the edge devices. As such, to reduce the cost for the edge device users, we propose a QKD resource management framework for the edge devices communicating semantic information. The framework is based on a two-stage stochastic optimization model to achieve optimal QKD deployment. Moreover, to reduce the deployment cost of QKD service providers, QKD resources in the proposed framework can be utilized based on efficient QKD-SIC resource management, including semantic information transmission among edge devices, secret-key provisioning, and cooperation formation among QKD service providers. In detail, the formulated two-stage stochastic optimization model can achieve the optimal QKD-SIC resource deployment while meeting the secret-key requirements for semantic information transmission of edge devices. Moreover, to share the cost of the QKD resource pool among cooperative QKD service providers forming a coalition in a fair and interpretable manner, the proposed framework leverages the concept of Shapley value from cooperative game theory as a solution. Experimental results demonstrate that the proposed framework can reduce the deployment cost by about 40% compared with existing non-cooperative baselines.

Increasing privacy and security concerns in intelligence-native 6G networks require quantum key distribution-secured federated learning (QKD-FL), in which data owners connected via quantum channels can train an FL global model collaboratively without exposing their local datasets. To facilitate QKD-FL, the architectural design and routing management framework are essential. However, effective implementation is still lacking. To this end, we propose a hierarchical architecture for QKD-FL systems in which QKD resources (i.e., wavelengths) and routing are jointly optimized for FL applications. In particular, we focus on adaptive QKD resource allocation and routing for FL workers to minimize the deployment cost of QKD nodes under various uncertainties, including security requirements. The experimental results show that the proposed architecture and the resource allocation and routing model can reduce the deployment cost by 7.72\% compared to the CO-QBN algorithm.

With the increasing demand for intelligent services, the sixth-generation (6G) wireless networks will shift from a traditional architecture that focuses solely on high transmission rate to a new architecture that is based on the intelligent connection of everything. Semantic communication (SemCom), a revolutionary architecture that integrates user as well as application requirements and meaning of information into the data processing and transmission, is predicted to become a new core paradigm in 6G. While SemCom is expected to progress beyond the classical Shannon paradigm, several obstacles need to be overcome on the way to a SemCom-enabled smart wireless Internet. In this paper, we first highlight the motivations and compelling reasons of SemCom in 6G. Then, we outline the major 6G visions and key enabler techniques which lay the foundation of SemCom. Meanwhile, we highlight some benefits of SemCom-empowered 6G and present a SemCom-native 6G network architecture. Next, we show the evolution of SemCom from its introduction to classical SemCom related theory and modern AI-enabled SemCom. Following that, focusing on modern SemCom, we classify SemCom into three categories, i.e., semantic-oriented communication, goal-oriented communication, and semantic-aware communication, and introduce three types of semantic metrics. We then discuss the applications, the challenges and technologies related to semantics and communication. Finally, we introduce future research opportunities. In a nutshell, this paper investigates the fundamentals of SemCom, its applications in 6G networks, and the existing challenges and open issues for further direction.

In the upcoming 6G era, existing terrestrial networks have evolved toward space-air-ground integrated networks (SAGIN), providing ultra-high data rates, seamless network coverage, and ubiquitous intelligence for communications of applications and services. However, conventional communications in SAGIN still face data confidentiality issues. Fortunately, the concept of Quantum Key Distribution (QKD) over SAGIN is able to provide information-theoretic security for secure communications in SAGIN with quantum cryptography. Therefore, in this paper, we propose the quantum-secured SAGIN which is feasible to achieve proven secure communications using quantum mechanics to protect data channels between space, air, and ground nodes. Moreover, we propose a universal QKD service provisioning framework to minimize the cost of QKD services under the uncertainty and dynamics of communications in quantum-secured SAGIN. In this framework, fiber-based QKD services are deployed in passive optical networks with the advantages of low loss and high stability. Moreover, the widely covered and flexible satellite- and UAV-based QKD services are provisioned as a supplement during the real-time data transmission phase. Finally, to examine the effectiveness of the proposed concept and framework, a case study of quantum-secured SAGIN in the Metaverse is conducted where uncertain and dynamic factors of the secure communications in Metaverse applications are effectively resolved in the proposed framework.

Dubbed "the successor to the mobile Internet", the concept of the Metaverse has grown in popularity. While there exist lite versions of the Metaverse today, they are still far from realizing the full vision of an immersive, embodied, and interoperable Metaverse. Without addressing the issues of implementation from the communication and networking, as well as computation perspectives, the Metaverse is difficult to succeed the Internet, especially in terms of its accessibility to billions of users today. In this survey, we focus on the edge-enabled Metaverse to realize its ultimate vision. We first provide readers with a succinct tutorial of the Metaverse, an introduction to the architecture, as well as current developments. To enable ubiquitous, seamless, and embodied access to the Metaverse, we discuss the communication and networking challenges and survey cutting-edge solutions and concepts that leverage next-generation communication systems for users to immerse as and interact with embodied avatars in the Metaverse. Moreover, given the high computation costs required, e.g., to render 3D virtual worlds and run data-hungry artificial intelligence-driven avatars, we discuss the computation challenges and cloud-edge-end computation framework-driven solutions to realize the Metaverse on resource-constrained edge devices. Next, we explore how blockchain technologies can aid in the interoperable development of the Metaverse, not just in terms of empowering the economic circulation of virtual user-generated content but also to manage physical edge resources in a decentralized, transparent, and immutable manner. Finally, we discuss the future research directions towards realizing the true vision of the edge-enabled Metaverse.
