The increasing demand for computational photography and imaging on mobile platforms has led to the widespread development and integration of advanced image sensors with novel algorithms in camera systems. However, the scarcity of high-quality data for research and the rare opportunity for in-depth exchange of views from industry and academia constrain the development of mobile intelligent photography and imaging (MIPI). Building on the achievements of the previous MIPI Workshops held at ECCV 2022 and CVPR 2023, we introduce our third MIPI challenge including three tracks focusing on novel image sensors and imaging algorithms. In this paper, we summarize and review the Nighttime Flare Removal track on MIPI 2024. In total, 170 participants were successfully registered, and 14 teams submitted results in the final testing phase. The developed solutions in this challenge achieved state-of-the-art performance on Nighttime Flare Removal. More details of this challenge and the link to the dataset can be found at https://mipi-challenge.org/MIPI2024/.

Lighting normalization is a crucial but underexplored restoration task with broad applications. However, existing works often simplify this task within the context of shadow removal, limiting the light sources to one and oversimplifying the scene, thus excluding complex self-shadows and restricting surface classes to smooth ones. Although promising, such simplifications hinder generalizability to more realistic settings encountered in daily use. In this paper, we propose a new challenging task termed Ambient Lighting Normalization (ALN), which enables the study of interactions between shadows, unifying image restoration and shadow removal in a broader context. To address the lack of appropriate datasets for ALN, we introduce the large-scale high-resolution dataset Ambient6K, comprising samples obtained from multiple light sources and including self-shadows resulting from complex geometries, which is the first of its kind. For benchmarking, we select various mainstream methods and rigorously evaluate them on Ambient6K. Additionally, we propose IFBlend, a novel strong baseline that maximizes Image-Frequency joint entropy to selectively restore local areas under different lighting conditions, without relying on shadow localization priors. Experiments show that IFBlend achieves SOTA scores on Ambient6K and exhibits competitive performance on conventional shadow removal benchmarks compared to shadow-specific models with mask priors. The dataset, benchmark, and code are available at https://github.com/fvasluianu97/IFBlend.

In smartphones and compact cameras, the Image Signal Processor (ISP) transforms the RAW sensor image into a human-readable sRGB image. Most popular super-resolution methods depart from a sRGB image and upscale it further, improving its quality. However, modeling the degradations in the sRGB domain is complicated because of the non-linear ISP transformations. Despite this known issue, only a few methods work directly with RAW images and tackle real-world sensor degradations. We tackle blind image super-resolution in the RAW domain. We design a realistic degradation pipeline tailored specifically for training models with raw sensor data. Our approach considers sensor noise, defocus, exposure, and other common issues. Our BSRAW models trained with our pipeline can upscale real-scene RAW images and improve their quality. As part of this effort, we also present a new DSLM dataset and benchmark for this task.

In the realm of video object tracking, auxiliary modalities such as depth, thermal, or event data have emerged as valuable assets to complement the RGB trackers. In practice, most existing RGB trackers learn a single set of parameters to use them across datasets and applications. However, a similar single-model unification for multi-modality tracking presents several challenges. These challenges stem from the inherent heterogeneity of inputs -- each with modality-specific representations, the scarcity of multi-modal datasets, and the absence of all the modalities at all times. In this work, we introduce Un-Track, a Unified Tracker of a single set of parameters for any modality. To handle any modality, our method learns their common latent space through low-rank factorization and reconstruction techniques. More importantly, we use only the RGB-X pairs to learn the common latent space. This unique shared representation seamlessly binds all modalities together, enabling effective unification and accommodating any missing modality, all within a single transformer-based architecture. Our Un-Track achieves +8.1 absolute F-score gain, on the DepthTrack dataset, by introducing only +2.14 (over 21.50) GFLOPs with +6.6M (over 93M) parameters, through a simple yet efficient prompting strategy. Extensive comparisons on five benchmark datasets with different modalities show that Un-Track surpasses both SOTA unified trackers and modality-specific counterparts, validating our effectiveness and practicality. The source code is publicly available at https://github.com/Zongwei97/UnTrack.

The new trend of full-screen devices implies positioning the camera behind the screen to bring a larger display-to-body ratio, enhance eye contact, and provide a notch-free viewing experience on smartphones, TV or tablets. On the other hand, the images captured by under-display cameras (UDCs) are degraded by the screen in front of them. Deep learning methods for image restoration can significantly reduce the degradation of captured images, providing satisfying results for the human eyes. However, most proposed solutions are unreliable or efficient enough to be used in real-time on mobile devices.
In this paper, we aim to solve this image restoration problem using efficient deep learning methods capable of processing FHD images in real-time on commercial smartphones while providing high-quality results. We propose a lightweight model for blind UDC Image Restoration and HDR, and we also provide a benchmark comparing the performance and runtime of different methods on smartphones. Our models are competitive on UDC benchmarks while using x4 less operations than others. To the best of our knowledge, we are the first work to approach and analyze this real-world single image restoration problem from the efficiency and production point of view.

Recent advances in camera designs and imaging pipelines allow us to capture high-quality images using smartphones. However, due to the small size and lens limitations of the smartphone cameras, we commonly find artifacts or degradation in the processed images. The most common unpleasant effects are noise artifacts, diffraction artifacts, blur, and HDR overexposure. Deep learning methods for image restoration can successfully remove these artifacts. However, most approaches are not suitable for real-time applications on mobile devices due to their heavy computation and memory requirements. In this paper, we propose LPIENet, a lightweight network for perceptual image enhancement, with the focus on deploying it on smartphones. Our experiments show that, with much fewer parameters and operations, our model can deal with the mentioned artifacts and achieve competitive performance compared with state-of-the-art methods on standard benchmarks. Moreover, to prove the efficiency and reliability of our approach, we deployed the model directly on commercial smartphones and evaluated its performance. Our model can process 2K resolution images under 1 second in mid-level commercial smartphones.

Shadow removal is an important computer vision task aiming at the detection and successful removal of the shadow produced by an occluded light source and a photo-realistic restoration of the image contents. Decades of re-search produced a multitude of hand-crafted restoration techniques and, more recently, learned solutions from shad-owed and shadow-free training image pairs. In this work,we propose an unsupervised single image shadow removal solution via self-supervised learning by using a conditioned mask. In contrast to existing literature, we do not require paired shadowed and shadow-free images, instead we rely on self-supervision and jointly learn deep models to remove and add shadows to images. We validate our approach on the recently introduced ISTD and USR datasets. We largely improve quantitatively and qualitatively over the compared methods and set a new state-of-the-art performance in single image shadow removal.
