We introduce a new model equation for Stokes gravity waves based on conformal transformations of Euler's equations. It allows us to characterize the traveling periodic waves both in the case of smooth and peaked waves and to solve the existence problem exactly, albeit not in elementary functions. Spectral stability of smooth waves with respect to co-periodic perturbations is proven analytically based on the exact count of eigenvalues in a constrained spectral problem.

Each algebraic soliton corresponds to a simple embedded eigenvalue in the Kaup--Newell spectral problem and attains the maximal mass among the family of solitary waves traveling with the same speed. By coalescence of speeds of the two algebraic solitons, we find a new solution for an algebraic double-soliton which corresponds to a double embedded eigenvalue. We show that the double-soliton attains the double mass of a single soliton and describes a slow interaction of two identical algebraic solitons.

We are interested in the dynamics of interfaces, or zeros, of shock waves in general scalar viscous conservation laws with a locally Lipschitz continuous flux function, such as the modular Burgers' equation. We prove that all interfaces coalesce within finite time, leaving behind either a single interface or no interface at all. Our proof relies on mass and energy estimates, regularization of the flux function, and an application of the Sturm theorems on the number of zeros of solutions of parabolic problems. Our analysis yields an explicit upper bound on the time of extinction in terms of the initial condition and the flux function. Moreover, in the case of a smooth flux function, we characterize the generic bifurcations arising at a coalescence event with and without the presence of odd symmetry. We identify associated scaling laws describing the local interface dynamics near collision. Finally, we present an extension of these results to the case of anti-shock waves converging to asymptotic limits of opposite signs. Our analysis is corroborated by numerical simulations in the modular Burgers' equation and its regularizations.

The Benjamin-Ono (BO) equation describes long internal waves of small amplitude in deep fluids. Compared to its counterpart for shallow fluids, the Korteweg-de Vries (KdV) equation, the BO equation admits exact solutions for the traveling periodic and solitary waves as well as their interactions expressed in elementary (trigonometric and polynomial) functions. Motivated by a recent progress for the KdV equation, we discover here two scenarios of the soliton-periodic wave interactions which result in the propagation of either elevation (bright) or depression (dark) breathers (periodic in time coherent structures). The existence of two different breathers is related to the band-gap spectrum of the Lax operator associated with the traveling periodic wave. Given a simple structure of the exact solutions in the BO equation, we obtain a closed-form expression for multi-solitons interacting with the traveling periodic wave.

We present a new exact solution to the defocusing modified Korteweg-de Vries equation to describe the interaction of a dark soliton and a traveling periodic wave. The solution (which we refer to as to the dark breather) is obtained by using the Darboux transformation with the eigenfunctions of the Lax system expressed in terms of the Jacobi theta functions. Properties of elliptic functions including the quarter-period translations in the complex plane are applied to transform the solution to the simplest form. We explore the characteristic properties of these dark breathers and show that they propagate faster than the periodic wave (in the same direction) and attain maximal localization at a specific parameter value which is explicitly computed.

Traveling modulating pulse solutions consist of a small amplitude pulse-like envelope moving with a constant speed and modulating a harmonic carrier wave. Such solutions can be approximated by solitons of an effective nonlinear Schrodinger equation arising as the envelope equation. We are interested in a rigorous existence proof of such solutions for a nonlinear wave equation with spatially periodic coefficients. Such solutions are quasi-periodic in a reference frame co-moving with the envelope. We use spatial dynamics, invariant manifolds, and near-identity transformations to construct such solutions on large domains in time and space. Although the spectrum of the linearized equations in the spatial dynamics formulation contains infinitely many eigenvalues on the imaginary axis or in the worst case the complete imaginary axis, a small denominator problem is avoided when the solutions are localized on a finite spatial domain with small tails in far fields.

Using the Darboux transformation for the Korteweg-de Vries equation, we construct and analyze exact solutions describing the interaction of a solitary wave and a traveling cnoidal wave. Due to their unsteady, wavepacket-like character, these wave patterns are referred to as breathers. Both elevation (bright) and depression (dark) breather solutions are obtained. The nonlinear dispersion relations demonstrate that the bright (dark) breathers propagate faster (slower) than the background cnoidal wave. Two-soliton solutions are obtained in the limit of degeneration of the cnoidal wave. In the small amplitude regime, the dark breathers are accurately approximated by dark soliton solutions of the nonlinear Schrödinger equation. These results provide insight into recent experiments on soliton-dispersive shock wave interactions and soliton gases.

Compared to the Camassa-Holm (CH) equation, the number of negative eigenvalues of an associated Hessian operator changes in the existence region of smooth perodic waves. We utilize properties of the period function with respect to two parameters in order to obtain a smooth existence curve for the family of smooth periodic waves of a fixed period. The energy stability condition is derived on parts of this existence curve which correspond to either one or two negative eigenvalues of the Hessian operator. We show numerically that the energy stability condition is satisfied on either part of the curve and prove analytically that it holds in a neighborhood of the boundary of the existence region of smooth periodic waves.

Black solitons are identical in the nonlinear Schrödinger (NLS) equation with intensity-dependent dispersion and the cubic defocusing NLS equation. We prove that the intensity-dependent dispersion introduces new properties in the stability analysis of the black soliton. First, the spectral stability problem possesses only isolated eigenvalues on the imaginary axis. Second, the energetic stability argument holds in Sobolev spaces with exponential weights. Third, the black soliton persists with respect to addition of a small decaying potential and remains spectrally stable when it is pinned to the minimum points of the effective potential. The same model exhibits a family of traveling dark solitons for every wave speed and we incorporate properties of these dark solitons for small wave speeds in the analysis of orbital stability of the black soliton.

The ground state of the energy super-critical Gross--Pitaevskii equation with a harmonic potential converges in the energy space to the singular solution in the limit of large amplitudes. The ground state can be represented by a solution curve which has either oscillatory or monotone behavior, depending on the dimension of the system and the power of the focusing nonlinearity. We address here the monotone case for the cubic nonlinearity in the spatial dimensions $d \geq 13$. By using the shooting method for the radial Schrödinger operators, we prove that the Morse index of the ground state is finite and is independent of the (large) amplitude. It is equal to the Morse index of the limiting singular solution, which can be computed from numerical approximations. The numerical results suggest that the Morse index of the ground state is one and that it is stable in the time evolution of the cubic Gross--Pitaevskii equation in dimensions $d \geq 13$.

Dynamics of the Fermi-Pasta-Ulam (FPU) system on a two-dimensional square lattice is considered in the limit of small-amplitude long-scale waves with slow transverse modulations. In the absence of transverse modulations, dynamics of such waves, even at an oblique angle with respect to the square lattice, is known to be described by the Korteweg-de Vries (KdV) equation. For the three basic directions (horizontal, vertical, and diagonal), we prove that the modulated waves are well described by the Kadomtsev-Petviashvili (KP-II) equation. The result was expected long ago but proving rigorous bounds on the approximation error turns out to be complicated due to the nonlocal terms of the KP-II equation and the vector structure of the FPU systems on two-dimensional lattices. We have obtained these error bounds by extending the local well-posedness result for the KP-II equation in Sobolev spaces and by controlling the error terms with energy estimates. The bounds are useful in the analysis of transverse stability of solitary and periodic waves in two-dimensional FPU systems due to many results available for the KP-II equation.

We study the existence and variational characterization of steady states in a coupled system of Gross--Pitaevskii equations modeling two-component Bose-Einstein condensates with the magnetic field trapping. The limit with no trapping has been the subject of recent works where domain walls have been constructed and several properties, including their orbital stability have been derived. Here we focus on the full model with the harmonic trapping potential and characterize minimizers according to the value of the coupling parameter $γ$. We first establish a rigorous connection between the two problems in the Thomas-Fermi limit via $Γ$-convergence. Then, we identify the ranges of $γ$ for which either the symmetric states $(γ< 1)$ or the uncoupled states $(γ> 1)$ are minimizers. Domain walls arise as minimizers in a subspace of the energy space with a certain symmetry for some $γ> 1$. We study bifurcation of the domain walls and furthermore give numerical illustrations of our results.

Compared to the previous works, we include arbitrary multi-pulse positive states which approach asymptotically to a composition of N solitons, each sitting on a bounded (pendant, looping, or internal) edge. Smooth periodic travelling waves in the Camassa--Holm (CH) equation are revisited. We show that these periodic waves can be characterized in two different ways by using two different Hamiltonian structures. The standard formulation, common to the Korteweg--de Vries (KdV) equation, has several disadvantages, e.g., the period function is not monotone and the quadratic energy form may have two rather than one negative eigenvalues. We explore the nonstandard formulation and prove that the period function is monotone and the quadratic energy form has only one simple negative eigenvalue. We deduce a precise condition for the spectral and orbital stability of the smooth periodic travelling waves and show numerically that this condition is satisfied in the open region where the smooth periodic waves exist.

The linear operator $c + (-Δ)^{α/2}$, where $c > 0$ and $(-Δ)^{α/2}$ is the fractional Laplacian on the periodic domain, arises in the existence of periodic travelling waves in the fractional Korteweg--de Vries equation. We establish a relation of the Green's function of this linear operator with the Mittag--Leffler function, which was previously used in the context of Riemann--Liouville's and Caputo's fractional derivatives. By using this relation, we prove that Green's function is strictly positive and single-lobe (monotonically decreasing away from the maximum point) for every $c > 0$ and every $α\in (0,2]$. On the other hand, we argue from numerical approximations that in the case of $α\in (2,4]$, the Green's function is positive and single-lobe for small $c$ and non-positive and non-single lobe for large $c$.

The wave function modulus of the double-periodic solutions is periodic both in space and time coordinates; such solutions generalize the standing waves which have the time-independent and space-periodic wave function modulus. Similar to other waves in the NLS equation, the double-periodic solutions are spectrally unstable and this instability is related to the bands of the Lax spectrum outside the imaginary axis. A simple numerical method is used to compute the unstable spectrum and to compare the instability rates of the double-periodic solutions with those of the standing periodic waves.

Dynamics of viscous shocks is considered in the modular Burgers equation, where the time evolution becomes complicated due to singularities produced by the modular nonlinearity. We prove that the viscous shocks are asymptotically stable under odd and general perturbations. For the odd perturbations, the proof relies on the reduction of the modular Burgers equation to a linear diffusion equation on a half-line. For the general perturbations, the proof is developed by converting the time-evolution problem to a system of linear equations coupled with a nonlinear equation for the interface position. Exponential weights in space are imposed on the initial data of general perturbations in order to gain the asymptotic decay of perturbations in time. We give numerical illustrations of asymptotic stability of the viscous shocks under general perturbations.

Compactons represent localized bell-shaped waves of either polarity which propagate to the same direction as waves of the linear KdV equation. Their amplitude and width are inverse proportional to their speed. The energetic stability of compactons with respect to symmetric compact perturbations with the same support is proven analytically. Dynamics of compactons is studied numerically, including evolution of pulse-like disturbances and interactions of compactons of the same or opposite polarities. Compactons interact inelastically, though almost restore their shapes after collisions. Compactons play a two-fold role of the long-living soliton-like structures and of the small-scale waves which spread the wave energy.

In order to prove the existence of a ground state (a positive, radially symmetric solution in the energy space), we develop the shooting method and deal with a one-parameter family of classical solutions to an initial-value problem for the stationary equation. We prove that the solution curve (the graph of the eigenvalue parameter versus the supremum) is oscillatory for d <= 12 and monotone for d >= 13. Compared to the existing literature, rigorous asymptotics are derived by constructing three families of solutions to the stationary equation with functional-analytic rather than geometric methods.

Periodic waves in the modified Korteweg-de Vries (mKdV) equation are revisited in the setting of the fractional Laplacian. Two families of solutions in the local case are given by the sign-definite dnoidal and sign-indefinite cnoidal solutions. Both solutions can be characterized in the general fractional case as global minimizers of the quadratic part of the energy functional subject to the fixed $L^4$ norm: the sign-definite (sign-indefinite) solutions are obtained in the subspace of even (odd) functions. Morse index is computed for both solutions and the spectral stability criterion is derived. We show numerically that the family of sign-definite solutions has a generic fold bifurcation for the fractional Laplacian of lower regularity and the family of sign-indefinite solutions has a generic symmetry-breaking bifurcation both in the fractional and local cases.

We derive exact solutions to the sine--Gordon equation describing localized structures on the background of librational and rotational travelling waves. In the case of librational waves, the exact solution represents a localized spike in space-time coordinates (a rogue wave) which decays to the periodic background algebraically fast. In the case of rotational waves, the exact solution represents a kink propagating on the periodic background and decaying algebraically in the transverse direction to its propagation. These solutions model the universal patterns in the dynamics of fluxon condensates in the semi-classical limit. The different dynamics is related to different outcomes of modulational stability of the librational and rotational waves.

A flower graph consists of a half line and $N$ symmetric loops connected at a single vertex with $N \geq 2$ (it is called the tadpole graph if $N = 1$). We consider positive single-lobe states on the flower graph in the framework of the cubic nonlinear Schrodinger equation. The main novelty of our paper is a rigorous application of the period function for second-order differential equations towards understanding the symmetries and bifurcations of standing waves on metric graphs. We show that the positive single-lobe symmetric state (which is the ground state of energy for small fixed mass) undergoes exactly one bifurcation for larger mass, at which point $(N-1)$ branches of other positive single-lobe states appear: each branch has $K$ larger components and $(N-K)$ smaller components, where $1 \leq K \leq N-1$. We show that only the branch with $K = 1$ represents a local minimizer of energy for large fixed mass, however, the ground state of energy is not attained for large fixed mass. Analytical results obtained from the period function are illustrated numerically.

The tadpole graph consists of a circle and a half-line attached at a vertex. We analyze standing waves of the nonlinear Schrödinger equation with quintic power nonlinearity equipped with the Neumann-Kirchhoff boundary conditions at the vertex. The profile of the standing wave with the frequency $ω\in (-\infty,0)$ is characterized as a global minimizer of the quadratic part of energy constrained to the unit sphere in $L^6$. The set of minimizers includes the set of ground states of the system, which are the global minimizers of the energy at constant mass ($L^2$-norm), but it is actually wider. While ground states exist only for a certain interval of masses, the standing waves exist for every $ω\in (-\infty,0)$ and correspond to a bigger interval of masses. It is shown that there exist critical frequencies $ω_0$ and $ω_1$ such that the standing waves are the ground states for $ω\in [ω_0,0)$, local minimizers of the energy at constant mass for $ω\in (ω_1,ω_0)$, and saddle points of the energy at constant mass for $ω\in (-\infty,ω_1)$. Proofs make use of both the variational methods and the analytical theory for differential equations.

In this work, we construct and quantify asymptotically in the limit of large mass a variety of edge-localized stationary states of the focusing nonlinear Schrödinger equation on a quantum graph. The method is applicable to general bounded and unbounded graphs. The solutions are constructed by matching a localized large amplitude elliptic function on a single edge with an exponentially smaller remainder on the rest of the graph. This is done by studying the intersections of Dirichlet-to-Neumann manifolds (nonlinear analogues of Dirichlet-to-Neumann maps) corresponding to the two parts of the graph. For the quantum graph with a given set of pendant, looping, and internal edges, we find the edge on which the state of smallest energy at fixed mass is localized. Numerical studies of several examples are used to illustrate the analytical results.

Here we characterize these periodic waves as constrained minimizers of the quadratic form of energy subject to fixed cubic part of energy and the zero mean. This new variational characterization allows us to unfold the existence region of travelling periodic waves and to give a sharp criterion for spectral stability of periodic waves with respect to perturbations of the same period. The sharp stability criterion is given by the monotonicity of the map from the wave speed to the wave momentum similarly to the stability criterion for solitary waves.

When the coefficients of the cubic terms match the coefficients in the boundary conditions at a vertex of a star graph and satisfy a certain constraint, the nonlinear Schrödinger (NLS) equation on the star graph can be transformed to the NLS equation on a real line. Such balanced star graphs have appeared in the context of reflectionless transmission of solitary waves. Steady states on such balanced star graphs can be translated along the edges with a translational parameter and are referred to as the shifted states. When the star graph has exactly one incoming edge and several outgoing edges, the steady states are spectrally stable if their monotonic tails are located on the outgoing edges. These spectrally stable states are degenerate minimizers of the action functional with the degeneracy due to the translational symmetry. Nonlinear stability of these spectrally stable states has been an open problem up to now. In this paper, we prove that these spectrally stable states are nonlinearly unstable because of the irreversible drift along the incoming edge towards the vertex of the star graph. When the shifted states reach the vertex as a result of the drift, they become saddle points of the action functional, in which case the nonlinear instability leads to their destruction. In addition to rigorous mathematical results, we use numerical simulations to illustrate the drift instability and destruction of the shifted states on the balanced star graph.
