For every brand-name skyscraper, there's an equally interesting building off the beaten path. In fact, some of the most interesting structures require a pilgrimage to a far-flung location—proof that, for these seven projects, the trip is part of the design.

Heydar Aliyev Cultural Center is one of the most important and famous buildings of Azerbaijan. The center, which results from the competition that the country opened for constructing a cultural center with a modern approach, owes its reputation to Zaha Hadid, who always admires her understanding of design. Zaha Hadid Architects (ZHA) has won the international competition to design a new Culture & Art Centre in Shaanxi province, that will also add to the urban landscape of the city.
