How can you deliver a motivational speech that resonates with a large audience?
Understanding that the brain is constantly scanning for danger and trying to conserve energy can help structure your talk. People generally remember the beginning (Primacy) and the ending (Recency), so starting with "shock" or "awe" grabs their attention. Or if you already have rapport, sliding straight into "why" works. Why will listening to you be worth their while? What's in it for them? Why are you, the speaker, here? Once the audience understands that, they can then relax into receptive mode. Employing a structure like Joseph Campbell's Hero's Journey helps people see themselves in the stories, and understanding people's learning styles can also help by drawing your audience in and zooming out again. That way, your messages land.

How can you deliver a motivational speech that resonates with a large audience?
If you don't know why you're on the stage speaking, neither will your audience. Clarity of purpose is key. I will ask myself: If nothing else, what is one thing I want people to walk away with and remember? What do I want them to do because of hearing me talk? And most importantly, how do I want them to feel? Starting with the end in mind makes structuring and delivering a compelling motivational talk much easier and, as a result, more compelling for the audience.

How can you deliver a motivational speech that resonates with a large audience?
I learned the "know your audience" lesson the hard way when, years ago, I delivered my rather irreverent resilience talk with all my trade mark high energy and vulnerability on full display to a group of university deans. I gave them life lessons neatly wrapped in stories. What they wanted were facts, stats and peer-reviewed study references. It's unlikely that your talk will "land" with everyone in your audience, but knowing who you are addressing and why they are there can give you a head start. What is one thing that the audience would benefit from? I've found it useful if you can find that out from the session attendees rather than just the organisers. With that knowledge, you can frame the talk and tailor your delivery accordingly.

People who become homeless often experience it as a result of domestic violence, breakdown of the family unit, or when their access to regular income was cut off. Housing affordability is in the news right now, and behind those headlines are real people, doing it really tough.
To aid awareness and to generate funds for the estimated 116,000 Australians - of which 25% are women and children - who have few alternatives to sleeping on the streets each night, I will be sleeping on two pieces of cardboard on what is billed to be the coldest night of the year.
For those who can't join us sleeping rough, then a donation/sponsorship would be very gratefully received, not just by us, but also by those who it ultimately helps.
