Bismarck speaks up: Letters to the editor for the week of Jul. 5, 2024
- Updated
Our weekly round-up of letters published in the Bismarck Tribune.
In reference to your June 22 article, I would like to know when the Tribune is going to print as Paul Harvey would say "the rest of the story"? I do not have money for PR so I would hope that when you are interviewed all sides would come out. There was nothing in your article about our concerns with the CO2 pipeline. Such as community safety, non-insurability of our land, water issues, electrical issues, citing so close to cities and schools, loss of productivity, equipment for first responders (you cannot outdrive it or outrun it), eminent domain by a for profit private company, foreign investors, IMMENSE taxpayers expense, untested length, size, and pressure, loss of land value, possibly not being able to sell the land, and many other issues. We have never planted corn on our land but are not against corn used for agriculture i.e. food or fodder (our renter planted it for cattle feed one year). We are not against pipelines. We have electrical towers and water pipelines across that same piece of land. There will be HUGE money made by private companies (and foreign countries) with this project. I was born and raised in ND and I love it here. This year is particularly beautiful. But I don't want it to become the Midwest garbage pit. If this private company does this project, who knows who or what else will be dumped in our state.
Susan McLean, Menoken
Why did Trump call Americans who died in wars ‘Losers’ and ‘Suckers’? Do Republicans and Republican politicians agree that American veterans who died in wars are ‘Losers’ and ‘Suckers’? From the time of the Revolutionary War to the present time, we have had many millions of men and women who served their country and more than a million of our service members have died or were wounded in wars. The sacrifices of their lives and time gave us the United States of America. Yet, Trump refrains from honoring these past and present veterans.
I served in the Air Force. Republican George H. W. Bush and Democrats John F. Kennedy and Harry Truman also served in war and all came close to losing their lives. Later all three became presidents.
Where was Trump when it was his time to serve? Does he have a right to denigrate their service by calling them names?
Wayne F. Fisher, Dickinson
Overheard at the coffee shop after the election was a 75 year old military veteran telling his waitress that he had never voted.
While this is an exception, the low voter turnout at the primary election is concerning.
Let’s hope that voters in the general election will take their privilege seriously.
John Maddock, Bismarck
So, we are choosing sides for the November election. Reminds me of my grade school kick-ball competitions. I guess the leaders of both parties are acting like early grade school children so maybe that’s why I feel like this.
If you are a patterns person (someone who is always looking for patterns) it becomes obvious that all our political problems and the actions of the big players could be solved by a 1st or 2nd grade school teacher.
This country is no longer being run, it’s now a competition as to who is the most popular. We have had 2 ND Republican candidates for the same position promising to do exactly what some guy from Florida wants done. I heard nothing about what they will do for the state of ND. One did advance forward to run against the Democrat candidate. Now I am forced to listen to the Democrats candidate to see if they are going to do anything for ND.
I’m sorry Mr. Trump, but do you really think you can beat a guy with the taxpayer’s checkbook and isn’t afraid to use it? Buying votes with taxpayer’s money seems to be acceptable now days.
What is it about old politicians not wanting to go home in their declining years? I would hazard a guess the answer to that question would have to do with the power and money involved for they surely are not motivated by the good they are doing. They have done nothing for so long. I guess if no one wanted them at home, that could be a reason.
Voting for the lessor of two evils is no longer an option for me. I will cast no ballot and commit an act of treason for a position where all candidates are unfit for office.
Jim Braun, Belfield
If we obeyed the Ten Commandments rather than just posting them in a classroom, our lives and living would indeed be different. We have accepted breaking the 7th commandment as an "affair" and do not call it adultery. We call it “White Collar Crime” instead of stealing as worded in the 8th Commandment. The 1st Commandment, “Thou shalt have no other gods before me” has been replaced with money, political, and personal power as foremost in our living.
We “Don’t Give a Damn” about our government’s policies and practices. We don’t care who governs and have come to thinking “I cannot make difference”. It is illustrated by the voter turnout in ND in the recent primary election when ¾ or more potential voters failed to vote.
Jerry Lydeen, Bismarck
Now let us get back to reality!
With all the trashing about the Summit CO2 pipeline I have yet to hear what depth is planned to install it. I'm also tired of hearing about the break in Mississippi or Louisiana where ever as they bury stuff too shallow for their own good. If this line is buried below our frost line depth there should be no problems from Mother Nature or the plow of farmer Brown. Should only need a marker here and there so one does not forget where it is.
If Minnesota got the "Flume data" they might as well publish it for each affected state. Last, ''We'' better get our collective butts in gear as things are not going to improve by doing nothing but complain as there is plenty of methane and CO2 to go around already!
Dennis R. Murphy, Bismarck
On the front page of the June 25 paper, we have former Legislator Holmberg who traveled on our dime and most likely committed offences against minors' numerous times facing maybe 5 years and is apparently not in jail now. On page A3 we have a regular guy named Diede facing 22 counts at 5 years apiece being held in jail. As despicable as they both are we see that Justice is definitely different for the ruling class.
James Weigel, Mandan
If you’re okay with the government spending your tax money like it grows on trees, thus driving up inflation, vote Democrat.
If you’re okay with the government paying off students’ college loans using your tax dollars, vote Democrat. (Are the Democrats going to keep paying college costs in perpetuity?)
If you’re okay with the government wanting children of any age having the right to have their sex changed permanently without parental consent, vote Democrat.
If you’re okay with biological males being allowed to compete in female sports and to use female locker rooms, vote Democrat.
If you’re okay with babies being aborted at any point during a pregnancy, vote Democrat.
If you’re okay with the government trying to put the fossil fuel industry out of business within the next 7 years (Biden’s promise), even though they have no plan for how we will heat and cool our homes without that energy source, vote Democrat.
If you’re okay with the government insisting all Caucasians are racist, vote Democrat.
If you’re okay with the government allowing, and even encouraging, illegal aliens from all over the world to enter our southern border, vote Democrat. (In three years, Biden has allowed over ten million illegals to be turned lose in the USA. The average number in the preceding decade was 400,000 per year.)
If you think you are better off than you were four years ago, vote Democrat, and expect more of the same.
Jim Schutz, Fargo
Bismarck-Mandan’s liberal platoon of letter/column writers (Bill Patrie, Carol Russell, Steven Chmielewski, Henry Lebak, Trevor Stavig, Sabina Gasper, John Maddock) and liberal North Dakota writers (Vicki Rosenau & Ed Jacobson) rely on the biased mainstream media to write uninformed opinions on the New York legal attacks on former President Trump. In The State of New York vs Trump, there was no victim – all the banks performed their own due diligence and they were repaid.
The case concocted by District Attorney Alvin Bragg may be the greatest miscarriage of justice of all time. The mainstream media (Associated Press, CNN, MSNBC, NY Times, Washington “(com)Post” (Thanks Mark Levin!), NBC, CBS, and ABC) have all gloated over President Trump’s conviction. An excellent analysis of why this case never should have been brought and why it should be overturned on appeal can be found at amac.us/newsline/elections/34-reasons-the-bragg-biden-show-trial-should-have-been-tossed-out/. A few highlights for the uninformed liberals:
1. The Statute of Limitations on the underlying misdemeanor charges (falsifying business records) had expired years ago.
2. The second charge combined with the falsifying business records to miraculously create a felony was an alleged violation of New York campaign law. Only one problem – President Trump ran for US President (Why US Supreme Court may intervene)! A former Federal Election Commissioner/government lawyer was not allowed to testify on federal election matters.
3. Judge Merchan had significant conflicts of interest including his daughter working for a consulting firm for the Biden-Harris campaign and other Democratic lawmakers.
4. The venue, Manhattan voted at almost 90% for Biden; 8/12 jurors used the NY Times as their primary news source. Jury of your peers? NOT!
5. The GOAT liar and convicted felon, Michael Cohen’s testimony (basis of the case) was unreliable and he committed perjury in this proceeding.
Election interference – YES! Trump Derangement Syndrome – YES!!
