Enroll and Manage Tax Exempt Status

Apply for Tax-Exempt Status

Some organizations can buy items without paying sales tax. Tax exemption rules vary by state.

Only the Primary Admin can apply for tax-exempt status. Follow these steps:

  1. Sign into your Walmart Business account.
  2. Select Account.
  3. Select Tax exemption.
  4. Select Begin my enrollments if it’s a new tax-exempt application and there are no previous records.
    • Select View my enrollments if there’s an existing tax-exempt application.
  5. Select Tax Exempt Application after reviewing the instructions.
  6. Select business channels.
    • Walmart Business and Walmart stores will already be selected when signed from a Walmart Business account.
  7. Select Save and continue after completing actions on each page.
  8. Select business purpose.
    • Resale Business - Tax-exempt category (Ex: Vending machine or gas station)
    • Service Business - Sells a service (Ex: Lawyer, accountant)
  9. Enter business details.
  10. Select business states that they’re shipping to or taking possession of merchandise in.
    • The choices you select will determine the next steps.
  11. Select a state certificate.
  12. Select exemption information.
  13. Submit answers for each question until the Continue button is available.
  14. Review certificate requirements.
  15. Review the terms and conditions.
  16. Provide the certificate information or upload it.
    • This step is based on the state. If you fill out this information, you’ll have to sign the certificate with an e signature.
    • The uploaded file must be a png, jpeg, or pdf.
  17. Repeat steps 12-17 for each state certificate.
    • Once completed, this will generate a PDF document of the tax application.
  18. Review that all the information is correct on the next page. Check the box to agree to the terms and conditions.

Application Status

You can track the status of your application through your account. It should process in up to five business days. If it takes longer than five days, make sure you’ve finished your application.
