RedCorner is a CTO As A Service founded to provide small and medium-sized businesses with a highly experienced FCTO 1-2 hours per day backed by 200 years of combined experience of our Council of CTOs. We believe that most businesses don't need a full-time CTO when you have the right person. Our fractional CTOs each have 20+ years of experience and are available to you today.

    Why am I paid $475/hour as an FCTO? Is it because I can recite all programming language syntax from memory? Maybe it’s because bugs cower in fear when I step into the room. (That would be pretty cool, though, right) —- It’s because I think in terms of business, technology, customer service, customer experience, operations, sales, marketing, and people at the same time. I draw connections and parallels across decades of experience, and my mind sees solutions that others don’t… I see the angles from the point of view of all the aforementioned business disciplines, while your run-of-the-mill CTO or dev would only see them from the tech perspective. — Let me give you an example: I was working with a client on a payment processing issue. We debated various approaches to solving the problem from purely the financial point of view because the best solution would cost them more per transaction… The code would be more complicated and require more time to save on every transaction. I did this when none of the developers could because it wasn’t in their field of view… Of course, my designs could not have come to fruition without said excellent devs, nothing wrong about them it’s just a matter of experience, focus and approach.     How to structure your Technical Organization by number of developers: 1-5 devs: Staff: All senior to principal developers Management: FCTO 5 hours a week 5-10 devs: Staff: 5 Seniors, 4 intermediate developers Management: FCTO 10 hours per week, 1 full-time engineering manager 10-20 devs: Staff: 10 seniors, 5 intermediate, 3 juniors Management: FCTO 10 hours per week, 2 engineering managers 20-40 devs: Staff: 15 seniors, 10 intermediates, 3 juniors Management: FCTO 10 hours per week, 3 engineering managers This is a rough estimation of what I have seen work very well in my travels.     Everyone blames the developers, but they can only operate as well as their environment allows. Every client I have ever had has called on me to "deal with the devs," but in reality, I needed to ensure that their environment was conducive to good, high-quality work and provide them with a strong foundation to deliver quickly.
