  • “Growing up, my parents would lose up to 40% of their crops each season, deeply affecting our living standards.” Motivated by this experience, Esther Kimani set out to make a difference in #agriculture in Kenya, through the invention of an affordable solar-powered device designed to swiftly detect crop pests and diseases. Now, her invention is helping reduce crop losses and increasing yields for smallholder farmers.   “Our goal is to empower smallholder farmers, particularly women, to increase their income. We aim to reach one million farmers in the next five years,” she says.   For her innovation, Esther Kimani received the prestigious 2024 Africa Prize for Engineering Innovation from the Royal Academy of Engineering, and was awarded £50,000 to further develop her invention.   Kimani was a 2022 #YouthADAPT winner: a program sponsored by the African Development Bank and the Global Center on Adaptation under the Africa Adaptation Acceleration Program.   Learn more about Esther’s impactful invention: https://bit.ly/4eXDOBm  #AgriTech #SustainableFarming

  • AfDB President warns against massive food imports in Nigeria The President of the African Development Bank Group Dr. Akinwumi Adesina has said that the decision by Nigeria’s government to allow massive food importation, to address short-term food price hikes, risks destroying the country’s agriculture. He warned that the policy could undermine all the hard work and private investments that have gone into Nigeria’s agriculture sector.   Speaking during a Retreat organized by the Council of Anglican Provinces of Africa (CAPA), and attended by Anglican Primates from across Africa, in Abuja, Nigeria, Dr. Adesina said, “Nigeria cannot import its way out of food insecurity. Nigeria must not be turned into a food import-dependent nation.”   Dr. Adesina also highlighted the Bank’s various initiatives to address food insecurity on the continent. One of such is the flagship Technologies for African Agricultural Transformation (#TAAT) program that has helped Ethiopia to become a net exporter of wheat within five years, significantly increased Sudan’s wheat production, as well as supported countries in Eastern and Southern Africa to continue producing food in the face of a prolonged drought.   Dr Adesina spoke about the development of 28 Special Agro-Industrial Processing Zones (SAPZs) in 11 countries to support Africa’s ambitions to move up global agricultural value chains.   Adesina also called on the Anglican Primates to be visionary leaders and transformational changemakers engaged in public advocacy for robust government policies to end hunger, malnutrition and other challenges.   Read a summary of Dr. Adesina’s speech: https://bit.ly/463im9T   #FeedAfrica #SAPZNigeria
