One of my vivid memories growing up in the 90s in a semi rural area, 20 kilometers from Nairobi, the capital city of Kenya, are the after school chores that included fetching #water from a nearby river. We had piped 💧from the nearby school’s borehole, although not constant. Sometimes we would experience supply interruptions as the water levels would go down during the hot season or when the borehole pump was faulty. Based on my parents’ income, this piped 💧 was ‘expensive’. To save on cost, we only used the piped water for drinking. My parents doubled as government employees and small scale farmers to supplement their meager income. At the age of 8 after school, I and my two elder siblings would change into our ‘farm’ clothes and go fetch water for domestic use like cooking, bathing, cleaning and for the domestic animals we were rearing- cows and pigs. At that tender age I could balance a 10 liter jerrycan of water on my back - as was the normal way of ferrying water for girls and women - approximately 350 meters uphill. The boys and men would carrying several jerrycans in a wheelbarrow. At age 10, I graduated to carrying a 20 liters jerrycan of water. We would alternate days to fetch water and fetch nappier grass to feed the cows. We also had help from our mother (after she got home from her government job) and two domestic workers who would carry their own larger loads. My mother, sister and I still have occasional back issues to date from this laborious work 😓. How about my father you ask 😌? Well, he was would stay behind at his government job and work after hours on overtime to get additional income to help him pay our bills. That was normal to us given that then and even now, water collection is a tasks undertaken by women and children. Fast forward to now. We all enjoy piped water in our respective homes and the challenges we underwent to get access to water is now a far-distant memory. However, for me, lately I’ve found myself relieving this memory as I now work in the #WaterAccess space. In #Grundfos and particularly, in the #SafeWater unit, through our water technology (pumps and water treatment systems), and working with actors in the water access spaces such as humanitarian agencies and governments, we are making strides to ensure that underserved communities in Africa and Asia, where most of the water access challenges exist, have access to #safewater for drinking, domestic use and economic growth. To me, this is not just a job. It is a passion. I know what it means to carry a heavy load of water on a young child’s back and the long term health effects. I know what it means to balance studying as a school going child and water collection chores.
