Today, it contributes 37% to Nazara’s total revenue, having grown 25X in just 6 years! Let’s take a closer look at its brand empire👇 Founded in 2014 by Akshat Rathee and Gautam Virk, NODWIN Gaming is gradually emerging as a youth-centric recreational, entertainment company with esports being its primary focus area. It took the M&A route to broaden its reach and influence in the industry: 🔸In a bid to expand its presence in the global entertainment landscape and diversify offerings, NODWIN Gaming acquired Comic Con India earlier this year. 🔸While it acquired Publish.Me and Branded in 2023, the Nazara esports arm took over Ninja last week. 🔸Earlier this year, it bought a 13.5% stake in a Germany-based marketing services company for gaming and esports, Freaks 4U Gaming, for €8 Mn (around INR 72 Cr). The decline of MX Player Established in 2011 as a video player by a South Korean company, MX Player was bought by Times Internet in 2018 for approximately $140 million. It was subsequently transformed into an ad-supported video streaming platform. In 2019, it secured $110 million in funding from Tencent, which was regarded as one of the largest funding rounds at that time. According to media reports, the platform was valued at around $500 million during its most recent fundraising round. Karan Bedi is the current CEO of MX Player, a position he has held since 2017. It’s worth noting that Times Internet has been selling off its assets for a while now. Last year, it divested MX Takatak, Dineout, MensXP, iDiva, and Hypp. So, what led to the decrease in MX Player’s valuation, you might ask? After Times Internet took over MX Player, it converted the media player into a streaming service, not only licensing content from platforms like AltBalaji, The Viral Fever (TVF), and SonyLIV, but also producing its own shows. This made sense because by then, users had transitioned to smartphones with built-in media players capable of playing videos by default. It also had the backing of Tencent Holdings, a Chinese internet giant, which supported it with an investment of $100 million (over ₹700 crores) in 2019. By 2021, MX Player had become India’s leading video streaming app, with users spending slightly more time on it than on Netflix and nearly double the time they spent on Hotstar and Amazon Prime Video. Thus, MX Player was second only to YouTube. However, here’s the catch. An expanding user base that spent more time on the app didn’t necessarily mean that MX Player was making a profit. It wasn’t even able to break even or generate enough revenue to cover its costs. This is because most of MX Player’s users were from tier 2 and tier 3 cities and towns, who couldn’t afford to purchase expensive subscriptions to Netflix, Hotstar, or Amazon Prime. Despite this, MX Player still had ads. The issue with advertising revenues, however, is that they depend on how much money brands can afford to spend. Due to the post-pandemic funding crunch, startups were short on cash. They relied on cost-cutting measures to stay solvent, which meant that their marketing budgets had been reduced. Adding to this was the emergence of JioCinema, which even started streaming the IPL (Indian Premier League) for free, and the cheaper subscription plans launched by competitors like Netflix and SonyLIV, and you can see why MX Player couldn’t maintain its position.
