The (Almost) Complete Guide to Student Loan Forgiveness Programs

Important Note: The list below contains only a general overview of each program. Most loan forgiveness options have very strict, precise qualifications that must be met before you can successfully apply. Click the associated links and/or directly contact its provider to find out more about each option.

No loan forgiveness option is set in stone, and some of these programs may have altered their terms or even been shut down in the time since this list was compiled or may even have been cancelled. Please contact us if you discover that any of the information listed below is out of date or if you know of a program we don’t have listed here.

Programs can change at any time.  You should never borrow assuming forgiveness.

Federal Loan Forgiveness and Discharge Programs

The options listed below are exclusively available for federal student loans, and are made available through the Department of Education. If you aren’t sure whether you have the right type of loan, you can get a list of every federal loan you’ve ever taken out, along with the specific type of federal loan it is, by checking the Department of Education’s website.  Also note that we have more detailed explanations of the federal forgiveness programs here.
