As we approach the final weeks of 2022, we have one important celebration to recognize, the anniversary of our Holding A Sister Initiative (HASI). This month we’re honoring our incredible partnership with Black Trans Fund that created the first fund in the country dedicated to resourcing trans girls & gender-expansive youth of Color, and creating a space for cis and trans girls of Color to build and thrive.

Celebrating one year of HASI
Trans girls of Color deserve to have joy, to be safe, free and thriving!
Since launching during Trans Awareness Week 2021 with our partners at Black Trans Fund, our Holding A Sister Initiative has awarded $1,193,000 to HASI grantee partners.
In the initiative’s first year, we’ve begun funding critical issues like community care spaces, housing and food security, gender-affirming services, policy work, and research. We’re also thrilled to have hired Nahr Suha as manager of the Holding a Sister Initiative to lead our grantmaking and programs.
This year we’re honoring Trans Awareness Week and HASI’s birthday by asking our community: How can we show up better for Black trans girls, femmes and gender-expansive youth and trans girls, femmes and gender-expansive youth of Color?

Projects working toward gender justice
Our grantee partners NewMexicoWomen.Org (NMW.O) is excited to share three opportunities for partnership, collaboration, and funding:
- NMW.O is pleased to announce the launch of their 2023 Healthy Masculinities grant cycle. These funds are intended to support New Mexico-based nonprofit organizations to engage self-identified men and male-identified youth in healthy masculinities work in their communities. The funding may also be used to support work with mixed and multi-gendered groups. Applications are due Thursday, December 8, 2022.
- NMW.O is seeking proposals from a research team or organization to compile and draft a quantitative report offering current data on the status of self-identified women and girls, and gender expansive and gender non-conforming residents of New Mexico using gender, race, and equity lenses, with accompanying policy recommendations. They’re seeking a research team that shares their values and commitment to gender and social justice. Proposals are due on Friday, December 2, 2022.
- NMW.O is seeking proposals from an experienced contractor or a contracting team to assess the New Mexico gender justice policy and advocacy landscape. They’re searching for researchers who understand how to best support the advocacy efforts of their grantee and community partners, promote progressive policy opportunities, and continue to strengthen the gender justice movement in NM. Proposals are due on Friday, December 2, 2022.

Going camping with TransformationsKC
In October, our grantee partners, TransformationsKC, hosted a Trans Liberation Camp catalyzing powerful networking and skill building for the trans-BIPOC community. The camp was for trans leaders working with trans youth and trans women of Color to connect and learn about themselves and each other in safe, affirming spaces.
Attendees participated in camp activities like group hikes, a camp talent show, campfires & ghost stories, and skill-building activities, writing exercises, and trans leadership & organizing. We’re so proud to support this opportunity for the creation of joyful and healing spaces for trans leaders working with trans girls, femmes, and gender-expansive youth of Color.

The Seventh Generation Fund for Indigenous Peoples invites Native-led community-generated projects and organizations to apply for support from one of its four programs:
COMMUNITY VITALITY enhances Indigenous identity, cultural lifeways, and connection supporting traditional foodways, community-based healing, cultural knowledge sharing, and Indigenous stewardship.
FLICKER FUND provides emergency relief and response to Indigenous communities in crisis.
LAND, WATER, AND CLIMATE supports frontline actions protecting sacred places, defense of homelands and territories, and climate change strategies rooted in cultural values.
THRIVING WOMEN supports Native women-led work that reclaims matrilineal lifeways, empowers women and girls, and addresses gender oppression and violence.
All applications must be submitted by Indigenous Peoples.

- Familiar with and/or assessing the use of community-centered approaches that do not utilize or rely on state or institutional responses (police, child welfare, justice system, etc.)?
If so, we want to hear from you by January 18th!
Through this survey, we aim to illustrate the current landscape of child sexual abuse (CSA) prevention efforts across the United States, as well as barriers and needs related to this work. We are especially interested in bringing into focus those working at the intersections of CSA prevention, abolition, and transformative justice.
