Five Tips for Preparing to Apply to the Happiness Engineer Position

The opportunity to become a Happiness Engineer is an exciting one, and with all the excitement comes a lot of expectations as well!

You’ve likely read about the work of a Happiness Engineer, and how we’re passionate about helping our customers with everything WordPress. If you share our passions and think you could be a good fit for the position, we would love for you to apply. 🙂

In this post, I’ll share some tips that will help you succeed in the application process and hopefully join our team.

1. Highlight your WordPress experience

Here at Automattic, we breathe WordPress. There are a set of skills that are fundamental for Happiness Engineers, and knowing WordPress well is definitely one of the most important ones.

Be sure to tell us about your WordPress knowledge and the work you’ve done for other people (clients, friends and family). Here are a few examples:

  • Have you built WordPress websites?
  • Are you familiar with how themes and plugins work?
  • Have you built any sites that use WooCommerce?
  • Are you involved in the WordPress community, like participating in public forums, attending WordCamps, and so on?

2. Pay attention to grammar and spelling

Writing correctly is a must-have skill for a Happiness Engineer. During your application, the quality of your writing will also be evaluated, so take your time and don’t forget to review your messages to us for grammar and spelling errors.

Keep an eye on the right way to spell the names of our products—WordPress.com is written with a capital “P”, and WooCommerce with a capital “C”, for example.

3. Get familiar with the documentation

It’s impossible to know everything! Even seasoned Happiness Engineers don’t know everything off the top of their heads. We are always learning.

A big part of our work involves finding information, and a lot of it resides in our public documentation. Take some time to go through the WordPress.com documentation and get familiar with it—you’ll use it often during our application and Trial process.

4. Don’t be afraid to ask

You’ll hear that frequently throughout your time with us—and that’s because it’s true! At Automattic, we have a strong culture of collaboration, and you’ll notice that your fellows will always be ready to help.

As mentioned earlier, a lot of our work involves finding information, but if you don’t find it, just ask! There are no dumb questions and we want to give you every opportunity to succeed.

5. Accommodate your schedule

Applying for the Happiness Engineer position can be a lengthy process. For this reason, I’d recommend doing it when you have a fair amount of time available. Deadlines are important and your ability to meet them will be evaluated.

When I applied, I was doing some freelance work and also participating in other recruitment processes, which quickly became overwhelming. I decided to postpone some of the extra activities, which ended up being a great call! Becoming a Happiness Engineer was a huge deal to me and by doing so I was able to focus and give my best.

Good luck with your application process!
