What is a CVV Code?

What is the CVV/CVC code on a credit card?

The CVV Number or (Card Verification Value or Card Security Code or CVV2 number) is the 3-digit number typically found on the back of your credit or debit card. American Express® cards have a 4-digit numeric code, usually found on the front of the card.

  • Consumers are generally required to provide the CVV code for all online purchases

  • Providing the CVV code is a way to prove that you actually have the physical credit or debit card. This helps protect purchasers and reduces fraud

  • CVV numbers are NOT your card's secret PIN (Personal Identification Number)

  • Most CVV codes are 3-digits and most PIN's are 4-digits

  • PIN numbers are usually required when using a Credit/Debit card at an ATM or for cash advance
