9GAG - Don’t laugh, memes are more serious than you think   To borrow one of CEO Ray Chan’s favorite buzzwords of late, the future of web3 is all about AI. But it wasn’t the simulation of human intelligence processes that he was referring to. Rather it’s the Aligned Interests of the web3 community. And boy, is the interest of the community of meme lovers aligned or what? Here are some proofs.   Last week, 9GAG saw not one, not two, but three big events taking place in our original headquarters which is Hong Kong.   First, we invited the walking meme András Arató, better known as Hide the Pain Harold, to test out the real power of memes. We basically airdropped him in Hong Kong without a set agenda and one eyewitness led to another, the news of his presence quickly went viral, spreading like wildfire. Within hours, whenever he went he would be drawing an orbit of fans, waiting for an iconic “mug” shot selfie with the internet sensation. At 78 years young, András told us afterward with his signature grin that he “absolutely loved it”. We hope it was a genuine comment.   The second event was our Memeland voyage. 9GAG has entered the web3 era via our venture studio Memeland, which has successfully launched 3 NFT collections since 2021. So we boarded the Memeland-themed pirate ship and toured around Hong Kong’s famous Victoria Harbour. Why? Well, for one it was a nice day (November is the perfect month to see Hong Kong). But more importantly, we wanted to see who was onboard when it came to web3 development in Asia. Turned out we were joined by many with aligned interests: Newman Capital, MTR Corporation Limited 香港鐵路有限公司, Invest Hong Kong, CASETiFY and even one of Hong Kong’s top officials, who gave a glowing speech on Memeland.   The third and probably the most significant of all was the official launch of #Memecoin. This was an important step in our web3 journey as we built out our SocialFi ecosystem. Memecoin, a fungible token with the symbol of ($MEME) will allow us to properly and fairly reward meme creators, fund our web3 social networks, and offer royalties to popular content, among other things.   It was a hectic, tiring but definitely rewarding week in Hong Kong. And hopefully, very soon, people (not us) will be paying Ray Chan royalty in Memecoins for using his version of AI. Credit to Ozaru, and Nathan Leung for the drone footage

Been a crazy but amazing few days for everyone at 9GAG! First the Memecoin announcement, then the walking meme, aka Hide the Pain Harold, visited us for Fintech Week in #HongKong, and earlier today we hosted the Under Secretary for Financial Services Joseph Chan, Newman Capital, 香港鐵路有限公司, 香港投資推廣署, FintechHK, Cyberport Hong Kong, Ray Chan, Gene Soo and Adrian L. over a little voyage around Victoria Harbour.
