The recent murder of 22-year-old student Giulia Cecchetin by her former partner Filippo Turetta has shaken Italy, sparking widespread anger and frustration among activists, organizations, and citizens. Giulia Cecchetin is the 105th woman murdered in Italy in 2023, a number that has dramatically increased in recent days.
Elena Cecchettin, Giulia's sister, delivers a powerful message to the public and the media, linking the murder of Giulia to a patriarchal culture of violence and control against women, that normalises toxic behavior like Turetta's. She asserts "Turetta is not a monster; monsters are exceptions, people outside society, for whom society doesn’t need to take responsibility. But there’s a responsibility. Monsters aren’t sick; they’re healthy sons of the patriarchy and rape culture"
She continues: "Femicide is not a crime of passion; it’s a crime of power [...] For Giulia, don’t hold a minute of silence, but burn it all down.”
In an era where feminism is widespread and diverse, even mainstream, gender-based violence persists. The struggles seem temporarily ineffective when faced with the tragic death of a 22-year-old girl. Yet, as journalist Annalisa Camilli emphasizes, "it is time to call for a radical change; gradual approaches are not enough; we must change the system as a whole."
As November 25th approaches, let's recognize that addressing gender-based violence requires collective responsibility. It's time for men to take their share. We need allies—men in their own families, in their own groups of friends, at work, those in positions of power—to recognise and dismantle the pyramid of rape culture and question the system that fuels it. Patriarchy is a toxic system for everyone.
Self-criticism, reflection, individual and collective efforts, and political commitment at every level are crucial. Symbolic acts alone, like moments of silence or red benches, are insufficient.
We need concrete actions for radical change, today and tomorrow, and every one of us has a role to play.
