Memories and Condolences
for Edwin Street

Our deepest sympathy to the Street family as we all loved and admired Papacita. Childhood summer memories are filled with enery pills and tomato rock hikes and the Fourth of July. His kindness translated in every generation as keen, neato, cool, or rad. The children already identify Chautauqua with Papacita as we all do. Godspeed Street family.

Love,

Anna, Lee, Zachary, Bettyann, & Mary Leonard

Dear Virginia family and friends,

I was so honored to meet you both last summer at Chautauqua. Bruce took me to lunch, and I loved hearing about his life, and about memories of Bertha raising my grandmother. My thoughts and prayers are with you.

Virginia and family, our ties go way back as Aunt Bertha raised my mother, Mary Craig. How much we appreciated your short visit last summer (in the rain) to our Cathy's recital in Chautauqua. Also, Cathy told us of her wonderful lunch and visit with Bruce a week later. Our thoughts and prayers are with you all in this time of grief.

My 7 year old, Tony, raised his hand in school yesterday with a prayer request. He wanted his classmates at St. Andrew's Episcopal School to pray for "this man I call Papacita, who was like my great grandfather when I go to Colorado. I never knew my great grandfather Greer, but Papacita was a good friend of his. He was always the first person I would go visit when I got to Boulder. He was such a nice man. He gave you energy pills whenever he thought you needed one -- and they helped!"

About three summers ago, my family and the Citas were the last to leave Chautauqua....as we were waiting for our Airport taxi to arrive, in comes Papacita to 801, with a Ziploc bag full of the "remaining" energy pills that had miraculously not be given out that summer....he wanted Tony to have them to take back to Texas. Tony will never feel that special again in his life, I am certain!

Tony carefully toted those energy pills back to Austin, hoarding them and only eating one in "emergency" situations...I think they lasted a whole year! From that time on, he always wanted to stay in Boulder until Papacita was leaving!

Papacita was such a special part of my life growing up in Chautauqua. Having my son experience a special bond with Papacita, that every person from age 7 to 70+ experienced, made me remember how truly unique and wonderful life at Chautauqua really is....and that we've lost our most special neighbor.

Papacita's legend will live on through stories like these. He will be missed, but never forgotten.

Sincerely,

Susie Camp Matta

Virginia and family,

My family's thoughts and prayers are with you all! In my twenty years at Chautauqua, there has been no one that I have respected more or has made me feel a part of the summer community than Bruce. I will miss our winter phone conversations and especially our summer discussions about the grounds, projects and the general well being of Chautauqua. Look forward to seeing you all this summer.

Lemon drops, lemon drops, lemon drops, late night hikes, tomato rock, quiet hour, tennis, picnics, listening to nature, lessons in life! Full of energy, always giving! All wonderful memories! Papacita embodied a unique gift to make everyone around him feel special. He was and is a Great man. We will all miss him but he will live on here because he touched so many lives here on earth. I just know he is by GOD's side passing out energy pills! My condolences to you and your family!

Dear Virginia,

My first memories of the summer Chautauqua community were when you and Bruce invited John to preach at Sunday school. This was before we bought #10 from John's dad. We went to your house afterwards and then had lunch in the dining hall. When we moved into Chautauqua, your arrival was the official start of summer! We grieve with you over the loss of Bruce in this life and pray for God's comfort in this time of mourning.

Mamacita,

There is not a childhood Chautauqua memory with out you and Papacita: kick the can (I liked to hide behind your house :-), beautiful yard flowers, church in the Community House, sweeping off the tennis court with Papacita, Tomato Rock, picnics (on and off Flagstaff) and of course Lemon Drops. And in the fall, after you had left, Lydia and I as little girls would play all around Chautauqua and long for summers with all our Texas neighbors. You both are, and FOREVER will be, part of the picture in my mind of what Chautauqua is. I know you all had life outside that wonderful little piece of ground, but it was the only world we knew you in and it was precious. Papacita is now off to the great Chautauqua in the sky, hiking in his crocks. I look forward to seeing him again sometime and hope that until then, us younger Chautauquans can carry on Chautauqua in a way that holds on to all it is built around.

Blessings to you and your family in this hard time and thank you to you both for everything.

Don and Anne join me in sending our warmest regards to you, Virginia, and to Virginia, Bruce, and the rest of your family. We all wish we could keep the old guard around forever. I find it ironic that Bruce died short of his 93rd birthday as did Daddy. We were all lucky to have such wonderful men in our lives. Chautauqua and all of us will certainly miss Bruce. I'm sorry my grandchildren never got to have Papacita's energy pills that Todd had so often over the years. God bless you all.

We will miss Bruce on his afternoon walks by our cottage, especially when he stopped by to chat on the front porch. Elwin will especially miss The conversations about the oil business and what we could do to improve our exploration efforts. Bruce was Mr. Tennis at Chautauqua and all of the tennis group owe him a deep depth of gratitude for all he did to make the game more enjoyable for all who played and watched. He will truly be missed.

He was an amazing and active human being who helped shape the world around him. A very happy person and a great role model…. I'll always remember him with great fondness, particularly on those evening walks with children to Tomato Rock.... Chautauqua just won't be the same.

My heartfelt condolences for Mamacita, Bruce Jr, Little Virginia, and all the grandkids. Y'all are in my prayers.

A wonderful man who will be missed by many people. Papcita always had an energy pill for everyone. He didn't seem to need any though. He made walking up the hill at Chautauqua look like a breeze.

Bruce was indeed a special person in my life for over 50 years. His close friendship with my father always meant alot to me, and I have cherished my many one-on-one visits and walks with him. Chautauqua won't be the same without him, but those of us remaining are challenged to carry on his loving appreciation of the grounds and of all Chautauquans. Our love to the family and please know that our lives have been enriched by knowing such a wonderful, vibrant man!

Bruce made my childhood - and many Chautauquans - special with his energy pills, midnight hikes, picnics, and constant interest in others.

We are all so sad to not have him here with us, but I'm thrilled to think that he is keeping my grandfather company now.

Chautauqua will never be the same. My thoughts go out to Virginia and their family members.

Of course, we hoped Bruce would live to be 100 or more. We will surely miss him and are saddened by his death. Even at his age, he was such a vital person and an inspiration to all of us. I loved his sincere interest in people of all ages. Chautauqua will never be the same.

Chautauqua will never be the same without Papasita. My childhood was so enriched by his "energy pills" and hikes to Tomato Rock. Big hug to Mamasita and all the Streets. Hope to see some of you under the Apple Tree this summer. Our thoughts and prayers are with you.

I can't think of another person who was better at bringing people of all ages together and who was so interested in so many facets of life. Most of us are lucky to meet someone like Papacita once in our lifetimes, and I'm a richer person for it. My condolences, Mamacita and all the family. I am sorry beyond belief. Dyer Greer
