Types Of Aesthetics & Trends

A collection of, mostly chronologically ordered according to time of emergence, aesthetics and subcultures throughout the years, from 80s punk rock, to 90s grunge, to 2000s tomboys, emo's, ravers, to 2010s hipsters, arthoes, 2014 grunge revival, to now and more. Music and fashion subgenres came about in the 2000s and 2010s, like niche offsets influenced mainstream trends at large. Specifically: emo, scene, kandi, rave scene and Myspace era, xD so random rawr internet culture of the late 2000s with things like charli the unicorn, the annoying orange, charlieissocoollike, Domo, Danbo, Happy Bunny, and Pon and Zi comics , "rosey blogs", the 2010s hipster with both music and fashion, twee fashion with the likes of Zoey Deschanel, Dodie and Alexa Chung, 3D glasses without the lenses, Mumford & Sons, Polaroids, etc., then on the other side we had party rock anthem come out and the whole swag and party culture, these 2 seemed to have crossover with things like bowties and the glasses, there was this emergence of a particular style on tumblr that was tagged by stuff like☀☾Bambi/Indie☽☀️ and also the g slur which might sound weird but I think there was a misunderstanding of what it was and many didn't realise it was a slur and thought it was just another way to describe this whole boho "bambhi" type style and trend; at the time the music scene had things like lost it to trying by son lux, everything by lorde, two door cinema club, the jungle giants, alt j, awkward by san Cisco, pumped up kicks by foster the people, arctic monkeys, adele was growing in popularity, liztomania by phoenix, tongue tied by group love and Paradise by coldplay, on the fashion side we had a kind of blend of things from 60s flower power hippie influences, with boho and tropical styles, to 90s trends, to recent pop culture mixing in, and quite a lot of bright colours, patterns, fun and summery silhouettes (which also crosses over a bit with the emergence of the VSCO girl aesthetic) the Elton john-esc small circular style of glasses, flower crowns, converse, sandals, mickey mouse and other disney print t shirts, harry potter and John green books, esp with the whole quirky nerd girl type thing that got popular as opposed to viewed as lame thanks to the hipster trend and somewhat the infiltration of late 2000s internet culture into the mainstream (in 2009 I had a recent second hand spongebob shirt from JayJays(?) "that said geek is the new chic" ). The revival of 90s grunge made a come back as early as 2010, with music like Nirvana, Soundgarden, Blur, Grinspoon, Green Day, Red Hot Chilli Peppers, Oasis, Radiohead, The Verve, on fashion side doc martens, denim jackets, flannel shirts, skater skirts, dark makeup, band t-shirts and badges on backpacks, oversized green military jackets, etc., but definitely at it's peak of popularity and own look and developed style in 2014, particularly thanks to media like tumblr for popularizing and creating it, the whole monochrome black and white, stripes and squares, arctic monkeys, the neighborhood, lana Del ray and 1975 music, songs like stop the world cause I wanna get off with you and arabella by the arctic monkeys, the neighborhood songs like sweater weather, west coast and afraid, and lorde songs like bravado and tennis courts in particular, black nails, black chunky sandals and boots, pastel hair, etc., I'd say Lorde also had a significant impact on this whole style coming together. We got lots of stylized pictures of people's boots and faint reflections above oil sleek rainbows on the road, girls in shopping trollies in black skinny Jean's and fluffy black jackets and black Nikes, Addidas skate shoes, doc martens or those trendy black chunky sandals that blew up at the time, doodles drawn on the backs of hands or in notebooks in pen, and arctic monkeys lyric posts. This was also around the time that there was a bit of a dip into unhealthy romanticisation of mental illness and related imagery, which we did see some of in the 90s grunge revival mostly with the pictures of drugs and cigarettes in aesthetic tints and some idealizing characters from Skins, but there was also some sense of awareness that was happening around the same time in the 2014 time period that started addressing it. Around that time we also had fashion trends with aliens, holographics, space buns, skater skirts etc., which I think is influenced and brought about by the 2014 monochrome grunge aesthetic and 90s revival, then the Arthoe aesthetic which I think ties closely to that previously mentioned bambi indie boho thing that was going on a little earlier on, followed by the Plant Mom, and primary colours trend, a vintage cherry cola aesthetic brought about by lana del Rey, then newer trends in alt fashion like utility belts and straps, tie dye revival, the Indie Kid, the Skater Boy revival taking some influences from 90s grunge and early 2000s, the Lo-Fi VHS aesthetic which somewhat overlaps with that but also influenced by retro trends, nostalgia and media like tiktok, tying into the nostalgia kidcore became a thing. We also had Soft Girl, E-girl, Goth & Alt fashion, more thrifty type looks due to the growing environmental awareness, things happening in the world and the influence of figures like Greta Thunberg so second hand and slow fashion got more of a spotlight. In addition to people wanting to live more harmoniously with the environment and growing social justice movements like veganism, we saw cottagecore become quite massively trending, with smaller ones that followed like grandmacore, honeycore, cabincore, and adventurecore, that last one also going by Granola Girl, I'd add goblincore here too although it's bigger than the smaller subsets here and still going pretty strong, with people's stronger appreciation for nature, which is also why we may have seen a spike in people's interest in witches and cryptids, though witches obviously aren't just an aesthetic also being associated with women's empowerment and rights, (which people were more passionate about defending due to the likes of trump and the rise of fascism) as well as foraging, herbalist remedies and rituals, and spirituality things that can help sooth anxiety and help bring mindfulness in times of chaos, also being a place for those who may believe in some sort of spirituality but find religion not for them, cryptidcore seems to overlap a bit with the theme of magic and nature, as well as a desire to explore outside and have something to believe in/keep them occupied with everything else going on it's not hard to see why people would rather look at gifs of moth man licking icecream. Around this time we also had aesthetics emerge such as dark academia, light academia, royal and princesscore, (which again seems to be an indulgence in escapism, no blame for daydreaming about running through a hall in 1850s and 1860s gowns), also Danish Pastel aesthetic blew up, coconut girl being both a fun summery girly one as well as having a 2k revival element which had been growing in popularity, which is why we also have been noticing revival of scene kids, 2k cybercore and twilightcore, the latter also being influenced by a subset of the new alt aesthetic, grunge fairycore/ pixiecore and grunge hippie. Influenced by yk2 revival, late 2000s nerd culture and internet culture we have glitchcore, oddcore/weirdcore and liminal space, in terms of music we have seen the rise of hyperpop and smaller subset breakcore, the former also being influenced by a lot of lgbtq+ artists which makes sense with going outside the box which the genre tends to do, a lot of fashion associated tends to have yk2 and cybercore influences, as well as anime, raver and vaporwave styles, the latter which came about in the 2010s and likely gave rise to the Lo-Fi VHS edits we see on tiktok.
