Hippie commune

From 1969 to 1977, Taylor Camp became a hippie's utopia on the island of Kauai.

What was it like to grow up on America's largest commune? In the late 60's, 320 San Francisco hippies took a caravan of 60 buses across the country & founded "The Farm" in 1971 on 1,750 acres in the backwoods of TN. It reached a peak of 1500 people, all who took a vow of poverty to live communally, self sufficient off the grid. During the 70's and early 80's, hundreds of children grew up knowing only this reality. Living in tents and school buses, knowing nothing of TV, packaged food, meat…

Existing most famously in feminist theory, the lesbian separatist communes of the 1970s called on women to claim lesbianism or celibacy and move out to rural farms deemed "womyn's lands." Today, some feminists are trying to revive the idea.

In the 1970s, scores of young people began springing up all over the country. They build their own homes, share the work and money, and legislate their own laws and taboos.

Brothers and sisters from all walks of life. A trip back into the communes and concerts of the 60's and 70's and a glance at the gatherings, protests, doofs and parties now and in between.
