How to make a rainstick

Have you ever heard a traditional cactus rainstick? The sound is absolutely amazing. They take a cactus reed, pull out the spines and reinsert them into the stalk. Then, they plug one end, fill the stalk with pebbles and plug the other end. The sound of the pebbles hitting the spines makes a wonderful rain

There are a lot of options, as far as home-made instruments go. Drums and rubber-band guitars are both really fun and popular options. But we have a pretty good drum already, and I didn't have any rubber bands in the house (or any shoe boxes). So we decided to make a rain stick.
