What I’m doing here is offering Max a choice with the word “wait” as we get closer to other dogs and people. If he chooses to pay attention to me, I reward him by tossing him a treat. Your puppy doesn’t know what the doorbell, door knock or intercom buzzer means. So they haven’t had a chance to develop many thoughts or feelings about it yet. In this early stage, teach them that a knock on the door can represent several different outcomes. This way they don’t only connect the sound to strangers arriving, but to many different things. By generalising the sound of the door knock your puppies response will be more neutral than anything. I do this with most of my clients young pups and find it very effective.
