Marine pollution is a combination of chemicals and trash, most of which comes from land sources and is washed or blown into the ocean. This pollution results in damage to the environment, to the health of all organisms, and to economic structures worldwide.

UN declares ocean emergency About 8 million tons of plastic enters the ocean every year. This amount is enough to kill over a million seabirds and at least 100,000 marine mammals. If drastic measures are not taken, within 30 years the volume of microplastics in the ocean will reach a billion tons, which will exceed the total weight of the fish living in the ocean.

Microplastics' impact on the environment is widespread and increasing. Scientists are looking at one sea creature's ingenious filtration system as inspiration for reducing one of the ocean's greatest threats.
