Only the keep and mounds of earth remain of the Norman castle at Orford in Suffolk. The keep is an unusual shape for a Norman castle, and is rounded with three corner turrets instead of the usual square shape. The castle dates from 1173. The Coat of Arms belongs to Orford, whose most important charter was that granted by Queen Elizabeth I in 1579. The town became incorporated as a free borough with a common seal and with power to acquire property and to hold a court.
