One type of hydraulic elevator used an hydraulic motor consisting of a piston inside a cylinder. The elevator cabin was suspended from wire ropes. The image to the left below shows an 1881 Otis elevator of this type. The operation of the hydraulic motor was controlled by pulling on the rope that passed through the elevator cabin.
