Stretch fabric

In my sewing patterns created for stretch fabrics i often talk about the required fabric in terms of stretch percentage. For example, in the Briar tee pattern i say that you need to use a fabric with at least 20% stretch. For my maternity patterns i generally suggest fabrics with at least 40% stretch. Stretch fabric is one kinds of synthetic fabric which stretches. This type of fabric can be two way stretch or four way stretch.

The best way to stretch clothes is to soak the garment using a fabric softener or hair conditioner and then stretch the loosened fibers into shape. Tools like waistband extenders can also easily stretch clothes. Certain types of cloth also respond well to steaming or the use of blocking or weights to stretch out key areas of the garment.
