In Greek mythology, the Pleiades were the seven daughters of Atlas, a Titan who held up the sky, and the oceanid Pleione, protectress of sailing. They were pursued by Orion, but they always fled him successfully. Zeus took pity on them and placed them in the sky as stars, to keep them out of Orion's reach. The Pleiades star cluster, also known as the Seven Sisters, is one of the most noticeable of all star patterns.
