Each part has its own colour, with darker shades in the shadows and brighter ones in the light. The number of brushstrokes used affects the smoothness of each part - more strokes generally result in a smoother finish if the right tonal and value shifts are being applied . Setting limits on the number of strokes for each area, like 25 for a cheek, can help maintain control this, and creates a consistent and more important fresh finish. Choosing the right brush is also important. Using one that covers a lot of surface area in one stroke helps keep the painting process efficient and prevents overworking the paint. This approach results in a portrait that looks cohesive from a distance but also has interesting details up close.
