Of all the interior shots I’ve seen of the Cocoanut Grove nightclub at the Ambassador Hotel, I’ve never seen (or at least noticed) this section seated under a striped canopy. Notice the exotic light fixtures hanging from above – I’m guessing that they were looking to duplicate the feel of a desert tent, much like you see in Valentino’s movie “The Sheik” (from which the Cocoanut Grove took its famous palm trees.) If that’s what they were going for, it works for me! Las Vegas, Angeles, Los Angeles, Hotel Los Angeles, Hollywood Story, Ambassador Hotel, Table Clothes, Los Angeles Hotels, The Wedding Singer

Interior shot of the Cocoanut Grove nightclub at the Ambassador Hotel on Wilshire Blvd, Los Angeles (undated). Angeles, Los Angeles, Black Light Fixtures, Crowds Of People, Garden Of Allah, Ambassador Hotel, Black Light Fixture, High School Reunion, School Reunion

The majority of the photos I’ve come across of the Cocoanut Grove nightclub at the Ambassador Hotel feature crowds of people, especially during its peak years, the 1920s and ‘30s. So it’s nice to see what the place actually looked like without swanky partygoers getting in the way. I do like all that detailing on the walls above those Arabianesque arches, and those black light fixtures that would have been perfect for Rick’s Café Americain in “Casablanca.”
