Sweet cherry trees grow about 1 foot each year in good conditions. Young trees purchased at the garden center typically take 3-4 years to start producing fruit. These trees were typically grafted onto 1-2 year-old rootstocks in the nursery, meaning the trees are more like 5 years old when they start fruiting. Cherry trees take about 7-8 years after planting to reach maturity (for a total age of 8-10 years old). Hazelwood Roots on Instagram: "Cherry trees in your own backyard? Why not? While tart cherry trees thrive in colder temps, sweet cherry trees can be planted throughout much of the US. In NC (8a) we have so many options for cherry trees. Just don’t forget to plant DIFFERENT varieties for cross pollination or you may not get fruit! There are a few self fertile varieties so if you only have space for one tree opt for something like the North Star Cherry (Zone 4-8) which can produce cherries alone. And don’t forget to plant that root ball slightly above ground- you don’t want root rot! #cherry #cherrytrees #cherries #cherryblossoms #orchard #northcarolina #northcarolina #zone7b #zone8a #ncgardening #nc #growyourownfood #sustainableliving" Permaculture, Paperbark Cherry Tree, Planting Cherry Trees, Cherry Tree From Seed, Sour Cherry Tree, Growing Cherry Trees, How To Grow Cherries, Black Cherry Tree, Cross Pollination
