Wetting the cardboard will assist with removal of stickers. Don’t use glossy or heavily dyed cardboard. 💦 water throughout the layers 2. 🪵🌴Larger carbon material such as large logs, twigs 3. 🥀🌱 Plant/tree pruning - leafy green prunings, or spent plants, just ensure there are no plant diseases. 4. 🍂🗞️Smaller carbon material - brown leaves. Can also use dried grass clippings, sugar cane/lucerne mulch, “naked paper/cardboard” (unbleached, non glossy, non coloured) eg, news paper, shredded cardboard, paper towel rolls, toilet rolls. 5. ☕️🍌Coffee grounds! These came from a cafe. Can also use other nitrogen sources like kitchen food scraps. 6. 🪱 💩Compost! I’m using homemade compost, it’s probably not 100% finished but I was too lazy. Can also buy store bought compost or manures. 7. 🪴 Old garden soil including old potting mixes I had after repotting some plants. 8. ⏰I let the bed rest and marinate for 3-4 weeks and popped straw on top to keep birds away. 9. 💰Add potting mix in the top layer. This and the mulch was the only part I bought. I added water Ollas here to assist in retaining water. If you want to make your own I can send you the olla reel. 10. This is ready for the new season plants! When I decide what I’m going to plant. Notes - This bed was being overrun by a raspberry escapee and needed to be cleared out. So we are starting fresh again. - This method will decompose and sink over time, it will require topping up with compost and soil. - This garden hobby gets expensive. I’ve done most of my beds in a similar method and grown successfully. Raised beds and large pots are amazing, in fact I grow nearly all of my crops in them. However, they can be very very expensive to fill with growing medium. The green @vegtrug raised bed in this video are amazing, but can cost upwards of £150-250 to fill. This is where a method called hugelkultur comes in really handy! Now what I am doing here isn’t the traditional method, however it works well for me, and it’s how I’ve filled up 9 large raised beds doing this. I’ve heard and seen a lot of people discussing the issues of this method, and while I understand the concerns, I have had no issues over the last 10 years. Over time the organic matter does slowly break down causing the structure to drop a bit, so each year I like to add fresh compost on top. If you are using containers or raised beds with a floor, you can skip the cardboard stage. It is worth noting that this is just what I like to do and I have a lot of success with this method. I am not saying this is the only or best way to do this. If I had unlimited funds, I would fill the whole thing up with a soil and compost mix. Also please make sure you remove any tape or plastic from your cardboard at the bottom.
