The Good, the Bad, and the Disruptive: Let us know where you stand in the 2024 Annual Developer Survey

This year we are asking familiar questions about your experience, but also have some new questions about what embedded programming technology you are using and what AI ethical responsibilities are most important to you.

Technology has returned to the familiar “wild west” territory with the recent enhancements in generative AI. Investment in the next big thing is surging with almost eight times more funding for tools and technologies in 2023 according to the HAI AI Index Report. We reported in last year’s developer survey that 70% of respondents were using or planning to use AI tools, and more recent reports estimate that number has increased among all knowledge workers. The future for developers in all areas of technology is changing, as is speculation on whether a metaphorical stand-off between skilled workers and trained models is on the horizon. There is one way to get a better vantage point of what is truly changing and that’s by asking directly. This year we are asking familiar questions about your experience, the programming language or database or cloud platform you are using, how you learn to code, and if you are a professional what role you are in. We have some new questions, too, about what embedded programming technology you are using and what AI ethical responsibilities are most important to you.

The Stack Overflow community has been providing insights to the world about programming and technology for the last 14 years and this year will be just as important as any for us to share your story. The data we collect will be made public as in years past and accessible to all. We will not collect any demographic data that is not privacy-compliant. In order to make this data the most representative of the worldwide community of developers and technologists, we ask you to share this invitation with anyone you know is in the coding ecosystem.

We will be using Qualtrics as our survey platform. If you use a third-party ad-blocking plugin, you may see error messages during the survey period, so we ask that you specifically unblock Qualtrics in your plugins or pause the plugin while you take the survey. Qualtrics blocks certain countries from accessing their site and data, including Cuba, Iran, North Korea, Syria, and the Crimea region of Ukraine (including Sevastopol). We acknowledge that some users in China may have issues due to restrictions imposed by local internet service providers.

You see, in this world there are two kinds of people: those that take the developer survey and those that read it. Take the 2024 Developer Survey before June 7.
