Chigwell Riding Trust for Special Needs

Chigwell Riding Trust was the first riding centre for people with special needs in the world. It has been established in Chigwell since 1964 - proudly celebrating its 50th anniversary in 2014. There will be a number of exciting celebratory fundraising events taking place this year. Special riding instruction is given to people of all ages and abilities, and the centre has approximately 160 riders each week. Manager, Deborah Hall, says: “For many people it can have life-changing consequences. It helps their balance and coordination and is just a wonderful experience for them. If you've spent most of your day in a wheelchair looking up at people, and then you're on a pony looking down at people, you see things from a different perspective.” As one of the leading specialised riding centres in the country, Chigwell Riding Trust not only benefits people with special needs but also the entire community, giving opportunities for volunteering, school participation and practical experience for children and adults working with people and animals. New volunteers are always welcomed. It isn't necessary to have any knowledge of horses as the qualified staff will show you just what to do. All that is required is a willingness to help. Some helpers come for just an hour each week, some for several days each week. Any help will be gratefully received and we can promise you a warm and friendly reception. Duties can include: - assisting riders with special needs by leading the horse or pony during a lesson, - walking by the side of the rider providing help, guidance and encouragement. - general horse care and stables maintenance.
