Want five months of free driving? Get yourself an EV! 🚘 This year, the 15th of July is Electric Car Day, designed to highlight how much more affordable EVs are than petrol or diesel alternatives. At The Electric Car Scheme, we have analysed the annual fuel costs for the average UK driver travelling 7,400 miles a year. Here's what we found: ⛽️ Petrol Drivers: £1,268 per year 🔌 Electric Car Drivers: £680 per year By the middle of July, a petrol driver will have spent more on fuel than an EV driver will all year! Electric Car Day is the day your charging becomes free. This, of course, depends on your EV model and charging times. If you drive a Tesla Model Y Long Range charged on an off-peak energy tariff, you could reach this break-even point as early as March 10th 🤯 ⚡Edmund V King OBE, President of the AA commented: "The data shows a clear delineation in the relative costs and environmental impacts of driving a petrol car which is hard to ignore." On Tuesday, Arjan Cheeta organised a drive day for Howes Percival at their AGM in Peterborough. It was a successful day with many employees coming out to test drive the top-of-the-range Volvo XC40 🚗⚡️ Our favourite bit of employee feedback was that driving the XC40 "was amazing and felt like a magic carpet"... they're not wrong! The EU has introduced provisional penalty tariffs on Chinese EVs, reaching up to almost 48%. Companies that cooperated with the EU investigation will face an average duty of 20.8%, while those that did not cooperate will be subject to a 37.6% charge. Here are some examples: 🚀 MG could face a 37.6% tariff on top of the existing 10% 🚀 BYD could see an increase to 17.4% Thom Groot, CEO and Co-Founder of The Electric Car Scheme, expects a quick response from China: 'What the U.K. and Europe need is stronger incentives to drive demand like (tax incentives) and equalizing taxes on public charging compared to charging at home, while simultaneously investing in the car manufacturing supply chain to catch up to the Chinese manufacturers which are currently ahead of the more established western manufacturers.' 🌍 These developments highlight the complex dynamics of international trade and its impact on the automotive industry's shift towards electrification. Our CEO and Co-Founder, Thom Groot, discusses the necessary next steps following Labour's landslide election victory to achieve Net Zero and what’s needed to support the U.K. once new petrol and diesel cars are banned in 2030. "If Labour is going to have any chance of fulfilling the laudable, but ambitious, reintroduction of the 2030 ZEV mandate, they need to do three things right away. Extend low BIK rates until 2035 at 5%. Lower the VAT on public charging to 5% to bring in line with the cost of electricity at home. And avoid the temptation to impose tariffs on affordable EVs from outside the UK. They don't do us any favours in terms of reaching Net Zero and don't solve other problems. We know from our research that for 68% of Brits affordability is the biggest barrier to getting an EV and 53% feel they can't afford to cut their carbon footprint, so we need to be doing all we can to bring down cost. "Keir Starmer will have a bulging in tray over the next few months, but he and his government cannot afford to let this key policy fall down the priority list. If this happens again, as it did under the Tories when the deadline was initially extended, the goal risks becoming totally unrealistic. What the industry, and the public, needs is a clear plan to reach 100% EV sales by 2030. "Even the latest figures put the market share for fully electric vehicle sales at just 19%, and 16.6% for the year to date, which is already behind the proportion needed to reach the deadline by 2035, let alone 2030."
