HFW was delighted to once again proudly sponsor this year's International Maritime Law Arbitration Moot 2024 hosted by the Hillary Rodham Clinton School of Law and the Institute of International Shipping & Trade Law (Swansea University). The final took place at HFW's London office on Friday 12 July 2024 which saw two teams, made up of the representatives from The University of Hong Kong representing the Claimant and The University of Queensland representing the Respondent. It was a tough competition, made even more challenging by the probing questions posed by the panel of arbitrators, including Chris Garley, Ruth Hosking, Mr Justice Simon Picken, Bruce Harris and Ian Gaunt. At the end of a very high quality moot the Respondents were found by the arbitrators to have won and we'd like to congratulate the University of Queensland team consisting of Simaima Gordon, Elijah Larsen, Heidi Willis and Asha Varghese. Our congratulations also go to the runners up, the University of Hong Kong and their team consisting of Loong Tin You, Tsz Shing Wong (Oscar), Tsui Zealot (Kenneth), and Poon Sze Ching (Florence). HFW's Head of Complex Environments and Swansea University Alumni, Richard Neylon, also had the pleasure of awarding those who achieved academic excellence at Swansea University's Institute of International Shipping & Trade Law with the HFW Module Prizes in Admiralty, Carriage of Goods by Sea, and Oil & Gas in our London office. Many congratulations to Ehsan Sarkhosh, Christian Scharmer, and Arjun Mital for their respective success, and we wish you the best in all your future endeavours. The future of maritime law is indeed bright. #MaritimeLawArbitrationMoot #MaritimeLaw #Arbitration

HFW Paris Partner Julien Fouret has been ranked Thought Leader for Arbitration and France in Lexology's Who's Who Legal rankings. WWL asked Julien, what advice would you give to the next generation of international arbitrators? "Be patient, things are slowly, but surely, changing. The future will include more practitioners, more diverse practitioners, to obtain a decision-making process closer to the actual reality of the world. And it is only then that we can hope to have a system less prone to criticism which appears more like an example for all judicial systems around the world." Read the full WWL Q&A with Julien here: https://lnkd.in/g5H-xjqF Julien specialises in international commercial arbitration and investment treaty arbitration notably in the construction, energy, hospitality, mining, and oil and gas sectors. In May 2024, the Maritime Safety Committee (MSC 708) of the International Maritime Organisation (IMO) adopted new amendments to the SOLAS Convention, which require the mandatory reporting of containers lost at sea. The new amendments are expected to be effective from 7 January 2026. It is expected that the recent amendments to the SOLAS Convention will bring improvements in maritime safety and mitigate environmental risks via a centralised governmental platform. The Carbon Offsetting and Reduction Scheme International Aviation (CORSIA) requires airlines to monitor their emissions and offset excess emissions using CORSIA eligible emissions units (CEEUs) and/or CORSIA eligible fuels (CEFs). However, there are numerous supply, demand, pricing and regulatory challenges with respect to both CEFs and CEEUs that make the choices for aircraft operators particularly difficult. In this briefing by HFW's sector focused aviation practice, we consider the factors impacting airlines' use of CEFs and look towards market solutions that are in the pipeline to support the needs of the industry. Read the full briefing here: https://lnkd.in/gwmkWdkY This briefing is one of a series, exploring the choices and challenges international airlines have in complying with their CORSIA First Phase obligations.
