Despite a brief downturn at the start of 2020, the average growth in UK biotechs’ share price was 32%, surpassing European biotechs (22%) and US biotechs (2%). Although the abilities varied, and we all ran the race separately, we all knew it was being run in Team spirit! This got me thinking... How often do people in leadership think about the value of culture within a business and their direct teams? The common themes I have noticed across companies I work with that have the strongest cultures are: INNOVATION - Because ideas are shared amongst a group that have developed trust and respect enough to listen and want to implement them. PRODUCTIVITY - Thrives because different perspectives have not only been cultivated but also celebrated to create the environment for this to happen. HIGH PERFORMANCE - It creates teams that not only receive but seek out constructive feedback that can help them improvement even when they are excelling in their positions. STABILITY & RETENTION - A strong culture also, provides the sense of stability and security for people to continue going above and beyond in order to succeed regardless of the backdrop in order to overachieve on targets and expectations. Culture at the forefront will always drive success, and yesterday for me was a perfect example of how it can impact and drive productivity both personally and professionally. Thoughts? Snr Director of CMC VP of Clinical Development SVP of Medical Affairs This year I have spoken with multiple senior executives who have transformed the businesses they are at, yet when applying for a new role, get ignored. The vast majority of these candidates are more than qualified to assist the smaller companies grow and guide them through the choppy waters to avoid costly mistakes. The market is very competitive and speaking with the right recruiter who can back you up gives you a huge advantage. They can also get your CV directly into the hands of the right person quickly. I recently spoke to a client and they outlined some internal issues, to which I replied with some facts and figures that have been delivered by someone who could turn their business round within 6 months (He has done this before numerous times and is well know for it) but his CV was ignored by senior HR 6 months prior. Thanks to all who attended our latest Life Sciences Scale Up Collective breakfast. As always, we had a broad and dynamic discussion, this time with a particular focus on topics around DE&I. David Bevan and I were lucky to be joined by a third host this week, our very own Sue Johnson, head of our Inclusion and Consulting Practice. The main themes and reflections of the discussion were: Psychological safety – how to successfully embed this over the long term. We discussed what it means to feel psychologically safe and reduce the fear of speaking up. Feeling heard when I do speak up. Feeling I can be my authentic self. How do organisations reshape failure away from finger pointing? The starting point for demonstrating you value people’s inputs is with inclusive meetings. Not the sexiest of topics, however people in the non-dominant group (Gen Y, women, people of ethnic minority) are interrupted up to 3x more than the majority group. After a while, it is easy to slip into the “why bother” mindset, so leaders must focus on inclusive meetings, ensuring everyone has the opportunity to input into decisions. Interrupters get called out, clear agendas and actions are circulated offering additional time for inputs not captured in the meeting. You have to “see it to be believe it” when it comes to DE&I, and so starting with the format where people interact most (virtually and in person) is a way to kick start your journey to a psychologically safe workplace. What is DE&I best in class? We debated a number of approaches, the key being that the strategy is embedded in the DNA of the organisation, and not treated as an “add on”, led by leaders and fuelled by “unleashing the masses” of an organisation. Making sure everyone is enabled, engaged, empowered and educated to drive the DE&I agenda forward, recognising the journey takes time, energy and commitment....but the rewards are endless. We will undoubtedly revisit this topic as there was so much more we could have covered.
