While laws prohibit the use of certain information (e.g., medical, finance), customers will share unprotected details about themselves in order to learn about and attain the products and services they need — i.e., when it’s beneficial to them. So you can still collect names, ages, and professions at networking events or from lists. People will still disclose their purchasing patterns on surveys. Before using such valuable information, you should ensure that it: 1) was given voluntarily, 2) is presented in a way that’s helpful to the customer, and 3) complies with applicable laws. As for protected information, your secure methods for handling it can also be marketed as just another way that your company looks out for its customers.
