🌊🎬 "Black Samphire": Where Film and Environmental Action Converge 🌱✨ In our latest case study for the British Film Institute (BFI)’s Sustainable Screen Partnership, we spoke to the team behind short film "Black Samphire". The team was keen to weave climate content into their film and wanted to portray the man-made problems of today as physical monsters. “Black Samphire” was born out of a desire to interrogate water pollution. Behind the lens, the production team took significant steps to make a positive impact. The team committed to beach and river cleanups as part of its fundraising initiative, and just 45 minutes of cleaning the Thames Southbank (right outside the BFI Southbank) resulted in over 15 bags of rubbish, equating to 65 kilos of waste! Most of the salvageable plastic waste was taken back to be sorted, cleaned and recycled. 👉 Read more about how the team integrated climate content into Black Samphire’s story and their offscreen sustainable actions in our full case study: https://lnkd.in/e-gv5HWW Black Samphire was directed by Alexander Vanegas Sus, produced with Richard Priseman, and executive produced by River Action UK . This case study was undertaken with the support of the BFI, awarding funds from the National Lottery, as part of the Sustainable Screen Fund to support all BFI National Lottery awardees in building environmental understanding and action on positive environmental change. It’s International Day of Biological Diversity and our world’s biodiversity is under threat. Changes in land and sea use, exploitation of natural resources, global heating and pollution are some of the main drivers threatening plants, animals, insects and even microorganisms.   The film & TV industry impacts biodiversity through its production practices, supply chain, and portrayal of biodiversity on screen. However, there is great potential for the industry to support biodiversity and nature recovery.   This International Day of Biological Diversity we’re looking at how the production team from 1917 reduced their impact on the British countryside while filming.   Much of 1917’s action was set and filmed in trenches that needed to be dug into the countryside. To protect the biodiversity of the land and create a minimal impact, where possible military training bases were chosen as locations to ensure as little damage as possible was done to the land.   In addition, full surveys were taken before production began to ensure that any shoot locations could be returned to their original state, once filming had wrapped.   This International Day of Biological Diversity think about what you can do to leave no lasting impact on the environment around you when creating content. Let us know what you’d do in the comments. #Internationaldayofbiologicaldiversity #biodiversity #mothernature #BAFTA #BAFTAalbert Kirstie Shirra April Sotomayor Victoria Stokes

BAFTA hosted an inaugural lunch at Cannes Film Festival last week, thanks to the generosity of RH who donated their yacht for the afternoon. The guest list included industry leaders, donors and supporters, on-screen talent and alumni of BAFTA’s Elevate and Breakthrough talent accelerator programmes and its Scholarship initiatives.   This is the first time that BAFTA has officially attended the Cannes Film Festival and we were thrilled to be here at such an iconic celebration of film, meeting with our fellow academies including AMPAS, the European Film Academy and Académie des César, and film industry peers.   BAFTA’s mission as the leading UK charity and academy for the screen arts, representing over 12,000 creative practitioners globally, is to champion our country’s extraordinary creative talent, provide community, and break down barriers to opportunity for people from all backgrounds to enter the screen arts.   It was also the first time BAFTA albert has attended Cannes. BAFTA albert’s mission is to build a thriving, creative and sustainable screen industry including running the world’s leading emissions reduction programme in TV production, and we have big ambitions for how we can help the film industry reduce its carbon footprint too.   BAFTA albert spent the week delivering ImpAct sustainability workshops, attending producer breakfasts, meeting international partners, supporters and associates and finished the week collecting an award for the organisation’s work to make the industry a more sustainable place at the Global Production Awards.   We’re now back in London brimming with ideas for 2025 and beyond!   Find out more about BAFTA albert and Matt Scarff's vision for where albert is heading next in the Deadline x Cannes Disruptors issue here:    https://lnkd.in/e4GwN8j5
