Highlights from our in-person BAFTA albert Consortium meeting at BAFTA 195 Piccadilly! This Tuesday, we held our first in-person meeting for our Consortium since the pandemic. We were lucky to hear from Tim Dams (Screen International), Dr. Helen Harwatt (Chatham House), and Rachel Brisley (IPSOS Mori) who discussed the Labour government’s sustainability targets and the screen industry’s role in climate action. Followed by an update from our industry Task Forces that are delivering against the Climate Action Blueprint: 👨🏫 Culture and Capability: Building climate literacy and leadership. 👨💻 Standards, Measurements, and Reporting: Setting best practices for corporate reporting. 🎥 Sustainable Production: Creating a roadmap for eco-friendly practices off-screen. ✍ Climate Content and Storytelling: Promoting climate-conscious content. A highlight was Catherine Ellis’s interview with BAFTA-winning producer Rebecca O’Brien of SIXTEEN FILMS LIMITED, who shared her insights on sustainable filmmaking. Key Takeaways: 🎬 Sustainable filmmaking approach: Sustainability can trickle down from a lead actor foregoing perks to be treated the same as the rest of the cast & crew. Shooting on location and using local amenities, crew and locations can reduce emissions. 🌍 The importance of climate stories: Filmmakers must tell climate stories, reflecting the urgent issues of our time. 🛤 Real-world climate impact and her new film ‘Harvest’: Rebecca spoke about navigating the practical challenges of dealing with the effects of climate change, namely landslides whilst filming in rural Scotland, as well as the scenic train journeys and beautiful landscapes that the cast & crew experienced whilst taking the train to location!
